From an award-winning food writer and chef-the breakthrough cookbook that identifies 12 micronutrient-rich foods that can help protect you against major disease and shows you how to turn them into mouthwatering dishes.
A diet rich in nutrients, including protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, and vitamins, is not enough for our health. For optimum protection against heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic diseases, we also need an abundance of micronutrients. How to make sure we get enough of these vital micronutrients-and how to prepare them easily and deliciously-is what Dana Jacobi shows us in 12 Best Foods Cookbook.
After identifying the 12 foods containing the most potent micronutrients-broccoli, black beans, tomatoes, salmon, soy, sweet potatoes, oats, onions, blueberries, walnuts, spinach, and chocolate-Jacobi provides over 200 fabulous, remarkably varied recipes starring these ingredients. From appetizers and sandwiches to sides and smoothies, from Salmon and Creamed Corn Chowder to a stir-fry of Asparagus, Red Pepper and Curried Tofu, the recipes in this book prove that a diet rich in all the micronutrients science has shown to be indispensable to our well-being can be a parade of delectable dishes. And, since chocolate is the most powerful antioxidant food, The Ultimate Bittersweet Brownies is one of the sweet treats that will satisfy the yearnings of health-conscious eaters and passionate chocoholics alike.
You need this cook book...actually you just need the list of the 12 foods. I really like the recipes in here. The 12 foods are based on a scientific study and are pretty easy to eat. The best hot chocolate I have ever had is in this book. (dark chocolate is one of the foods). just email me and I will give you the hot chocolate recipe.
Nice recipes, good suggestions, some good nutrition facts in here on what & why the foods chosen are the healthiest for you. I agreed with most everything in here, except maybe the soy, that is not really a part of my everyday foods nor will it be, it just isn't something that appeals to me, with the exception of chocolate soy milk on occasion, other than that i don't see that fitting in for me. I loved that onions, and the spinach made the list, especially the onions.
The recipes looked easy to make and pretty common ingredients which was nice. I only tried a few recipes but they were good, I would check this book out again in the future if i every need to try a new recipe this would be a book that i would brouse for good healthy choices.
Book was easy to read format and imformative. I would read other books by this author.
I haven't made any of the recipes, but I bookmarked at least two dozen of them. As other reviewers have noted, these are healthy recipes without sounding like health food, and at least in my area, I doubt that I need to make a single trip to the natural foods store to acquire an ingredient. This is a very nice addition to any cookbook collection!
Pros: interesting sidebar information, author tells you where to find certain ingredients and in some cases, which brand she prefers (and why)
For anyone who is wondering what foods give you the best bang for your buck and also how to prepare them, search no more. There are probably a hundred recipes that incorporate various combinations of super foods. Recipes are easy to follow & inexpensive.
Making the Curried Spinach Dip for a cooking demonstration tonight I was reminded of how much I love this book. Great healthy recipes that are delicious.
I think I will pass on this one. I picked it up thinking it was what I wanted but its not really up to what I wanted. Soy is way too common in our foods already.
