Eager to turn over a new leaf and cast aside (if only for a week) her high-paced career as an agent to the hottest stars in Hollywood, Blossom Benedict ventures to the tropical paradise of Hawaii's big island where she's signed up at a contemplative yoga retreat at Mana Ashram.
There the yogis appear to be a peaceful, intimate bunch, and soon she's downward-dogging with the best of them, all stresses from her life in Los Angeles forgotten.
But when her fast new friend, Rain is found dead one morning, the tranquility she'd seen amongst the yogis is quickly replaced with a dark mentality uniform to the ashram. No one seems concerned the young woman has been killed. They return to their yogic schedule as though foul play hasn't occurred, and Blossom takes it upon herself to expose the killer.
If she thought she could escape the hold Hollywood has on her, one tall, dark, and handsome man stands in her way. Dan Warfield, a burgeoning heartthrob with a handful of action films under his belt, takes an interest in Blossom, which has her thrown. The retreat at Mana Ashram isn't their first encounter. Last year, they argued across a table at Paramount leaving a bad taste in her mouth. Can she trust his deep tone and tickling compliments? Or is this his way of throwing her off the murderer's scent?
As Blossom tracks a killer who might be uncatchable and fails to resist Dan's burning advances, she finds herself in a quandary like no other - catch or be killed…
Mana mean spiritual power and she'll have to find some in order to get off this island alive.
This was a really quick read. It was enjoyable, although not without some debatable character flaws. I say debatable, because some people require some background information or meat to their characters, while others are fine with just diving right into the story and going with the flow.
Killer Karma is the first in a mystery series based on the character Blossom Benedict. She loathes her first name; it reminds her of her hippy parents and all of the mistakes they made raising her (personally, I love it because I have a Chihuahua named Daisy Blossom).
But to each their own.
Anyway, Blossom has struggled hard in her life, desperate to escape her past and create a brighter future for herself. Unfortunately, this has come at the expense of her present day happiness as well as her love life.
So off Blossom goes to a yoga retreat in Hawaii, bound and determined to enjoy herself and relax for once in her life. While there, she bumps into a man she had business dealings with previously, which had left a bitter taste in her mouth.
But the past was the past, and before she knew it, something was brewing between them. What was it? A meaningful relationship, or just a forgettable fling while on vacation?
To complicate matters even further, a young woman is found murdered and all signs point to different men, including her new love interest.
Can Blossom overcome the suspicion and help him unravel the mystery before it's too late, or is she protecting a guilty man?
Who really killed this girl, and why?
All in all, I think that the author has the potential to become a 5 star writer. She shows such promise with her poetic, lively descriptions. Where more famous authors have made the mistake of crossing into purple prose territory, this author manages to delight with some downright beautifully lyrical writing.
That's much more than I expected with a cute cozy mystery. What a pleasant surprise.
Blossom Benedict has decided to try to shake off her hard driving career and get back to nature at a Hawaiian yoga ashram. The yoga is great, but the guru who runs ashram is all kinds of crazy. When one of her fellow yogis is murdered, Blossom is afraid she has unwittingly walked right into a cult.
Well this was fun. It is really a novella and was a quick read. I liked Blossom. I like mysteries about yoga so it had that going for it. The mystery was actually pretty good even though there was not a lot of time for clues. There are more of these short Blossom books and I plan to read the next one.
Enjoyed the adventures of Clarity in this book. Her mom is especially believable (since she is the same age as me!) and I confess to having similar problems when it comes to listening to my adult children. The story flowed well and kept me reading until it was finished, I just had to know what Clarity's Mom was going to do next, as well as who the real killer was. Followed too many of the red herrings so I was surprised by the outcome, but that just makes the book more fun.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Killer Karma (Blossom Benedict Mysteries #1) by Jeanine Spooner
Blossom Benedict takes a week off from her busy career to go to Hawaii for a yoga retreat. All the Yogis there are laid back and peaceful, just what she is looking for. Then her new friend Rain is found dead. Oddly no one seems concerned that she was killed, accept Blossom. So she decides to find out who killed her and why.
I really liked Blossom and the originality of a yoga retreat. The story moves at a fast pace, the characters are interesting, there is a mystery, with a splash of romance. A fun murder mystery.
This book is a delightful blend of mystery and romance. It kept me fascinated all the way through, learning about yogis, karma, beautiful Hawaii, making me wish I could go back again. Rain's murder, interspersed with fascinating human interest vignettes, kept me wanting to read it even when I had other things to do. If you enjoy reading about other places, new mindsets, alternate lifestyles, mystery, and some hot romance, this is the book for you:)
Who would have thunk so much evil could hide in open sight! While the story is sort of interesting, the characters lack depth and many of the conversations were plastic. The love story lacked definition, creating a sense of ho-hum.
A bit confusing at first, but when you get all the characters straight, the action intensifies. I enjoyed being in Hawaii, picturing the scenery. The terror and thrills make the story good. Will read more of Blossom's adventures
Could have done without all the karma and yogis.......it distracted from a good possible story. Had a few typos. This is the first book I have read from this author. I liked Blossom and Dan and some of the other characters.
