Gary Vaynerchuk is the ultimate businessman. Born with an entrepreneurial spirit, Gary is a proven investor and advisor in the world of startups, and now an expert on the Fortune 500 world, through is work as CEO of Vaynermedia, a social media marketing agency. Having two bestsellers under his belt doesn't hurt either.

Thirty-three years ago, Gary got his start in business by ripping flowers out of people's yards and selling them back. Years later, he would use that savvy to grow his family's wine store from $3 to $45 million in just a few short years by launching WineLibrary.com, one of America's first wine websites. Fast forward to now, and he's continued to use that same business savvy, along with his brother, to build VaynerMedia, a new breed of agency that helps Fortune 500 companies like GE, PepsiCo, Hasbro and the New York Jets find their social media voices and build their digital brands. Along the way Gary launched a stratospherically successful internet wine show, written two bestselling books, and beaten Dr. Oz in basketball.

Reading sessions: 30

What I Liked: #AskGaryVee is a meaningful book to read in this social marketing era.
The book is organized around 22 themes that cover most of the craft and life of any individual involved in social media marketing. Each theme is treated via a series of questions and answers. The information is top-notch. Even if some of the platforms he talks about are not existing anymore (Merkaat) or less groundbreaking (Insta) the concepts themselves didn't change. It's also an extremely positive and kind book. The sort of book that makes you feel great and prepare a lot of new plans around your own strategies.

What I disliked: The Q&A nature of this book was for me really difficult to read because of the absence of structured storytelling between chapter or even within them. It makes the book a very disjointed experience. I spent 19h studying this book over several months because of this. As every story has its own life, it makes it easy to leave this book on the side without feeling the need to finish it. It probably also works great as an audiobook I imagine. Also, a lot of repetition.
However, this format also tremendously helps to understand the vast scope of application of his key message about listening, empathising/sympathizing and creating content based on that. The theory is straightforward and the book value resides in the myriad of examples that GaryVee provides.

Manga Analogy: GaryVee is Asta from Black Clover. He doesn't have a "proper" education but developed his craft through a ton of practice and dedication since childhood. He values relationship and people above everything, genuinely want people around him to improve and engage with them so they can. That doesn't prevent him from wanting to become the best that ever existed at his craft.

What a surprise read. For someone who hadn't heard of Gary Vaynerchuck apart from an appearance on "30 Days of Genius" I was utterly impressed by the audiobook. It was a combination of the topics discussed, the enthusiasm and authenticity of the author/narrator and also the context he provided. I recommend listening to the audiobook, since he changed some of the answers to the show and book, but also because I could things into a much better context hearing him answer himself than just reading the answers with my own voice in my head - if that makes sense.
Contentwise a lot of topics are covered, he gives his honest opinion and experience (at least it felt like that) on questions to various fields of business, social media and life in general. I especially liked how he wasn't sugarcoating things and said when questions rubbed him the wrong way, or pissed him off, as he says.
I can only recommend listening to this, even if you are not interested in becoming an entrepreneur or making it big (like me). This book will get you thinking about things and reflect on what you are doing, and that is never a bad thing in my opinion.

Because of the timely nature of this book, get to it soon. If you come to it later on, you will still find core content on many of the topics discussed, but it's likely that many of the media platforms that Gary Vaynerchuk mentions will have evolved into something completely different or faded away. Audiobook content differs from published book since the author prefers to responds to the questions spontaneously instead of reading from the text. Audiobook listeners will get the added benefit of Vaynerchuk passionate delivery.

If you're into business, entrepreneurship or social media then I highly recommend this book. It's full of insights and great useful things.
If you're a regular of the #AskGaryVee show then you know what to expect! The audiobook is even better because there are so many additions, and it's like Gary is talking inside your head.

I am embarrassed to even to admit it, but I had not even heard of Gary V until couple years ago. Apparently, I am the last person alive that had heard of him cause when I first tried to check out his books from the library, they had a long ass waiting list on all of them. So I settled for watching his videos and stuff and was always pleasantly amused.

Then finally my turn came up for this book, and I could finally see for myself what everyone was buzzing about.

I genuinely entertained with this book. I mean there wasn't really anything groundbreaking in the book. He is all like hustle hustle hustle which I am like DUH dude but the way he says stuff is entertaining. I am gonna get his other books just for the entertainment value alone.

It was interesting to see how he answered the questions that were asked on the podcasts and videos the second time around.

If you are looking for an intellectual take one business, then this is not it. By his admission, he has read fewer than ten books he whole life nad did not do well in school growing up. He is full of grit and determination, and that in itself is inspiring on many levels.

Just when you read this book take what he says with a grain of salt. I mean hustling is important but so is other things like talent.  I could hustle all I want, but if I can't write then all the hustle in the world is not gonna matter if I want to be a writer. It is the same with a basketball player I can hustle my heart out but if I don't have any talent then well...

THAT SAID...I think there is still nuggets of wisdom in this book. They are buried, but they are there. Once I got over reading this book as an informative book and instead switched my brain to an entertainment focus I enjoyed this book more.

Don't go in for deep universal truths to be revealed but rather for entertainment value and you will be surprised by what you will glean from this book.

INTENSE ADVICE FROM AN INTENSE MAN

#AskGaryVee is a compendium of popular topics from his radio show. GaryVee is a funny man and tells funny (and useful) stories. "It is deliciously ironic that I, an F student, have received invitations to speak at Harvard, Yale, and Stanford." Not a proud man, Gary clarifies that he wasn't just a mediocre student--he really did get all D's and F's. You just have to like someone who can be so open about his past failures.

Gary makes it clear that the essence of his business success is due to his intense work ethic: "I have a lot of talent, but it's my work ethic--my hustle--that has been a substantial backbone to my success." Further, "It's making every minute count. Every Single Minute." He notes that he can outwork anyone--and I have no doubt he could.

Gary does not sugarcoat anything--he just calls 'em like he sees 'em.He makes the point that in many cases one's education has nothing at all to do with business success. "I'm fascinated at how little parallel there can be between one's level of education and success in the modern business world."

This book covers a wide variety of topics--mostly related to marketing, but also advice on family and life in general. I was surprised to find a chapter on music. After reading through the music questions, however, I realized they were questions on how to market your musical skills, not the art of music per se.

The reader will quickly realize that the author approaches his home life in the same way as he does business--with 100% intensity--nothing held back.

I found the most useful way to read this book was to just browse through the topics, then stop at ones of interest. Here's an example of a great insight: In discussing relationships, Gary suggests that one "bring 51% of the value in a relationship, whether it's with an employee, a client, or a stranger. Always play the long game of lifetime value." It seems to me this "long game" approach to life is a real winning strategy.

So all in all, I found #AskGaryVee to be a fascinating assortment of ideas--most of which I thought were really insightful. Ironically, some of the author's most critical suggestions aren't really new ideas, but traditional ideas presented in a new light. His intense work ethic stands out.

Loved it!

I loved this book!

First, the format is really convenient. The whole book is a series of questions and answers which is incredibly easy to consume. Because I don't have the time to sit through several hours of #AGV videos, this was convenient.

If you don't know who Gary V is, I think this book is a good place to start.

One thing I noticed about all the tips and advice given in the book (and elsewhere by Gary) is that they tend to be a little contradictory. For example, Gary says that other people's opinions don't really matter and that you've got to do your thing, but he also says there's nothing wrong with pleasing people. He says that you should stand up to your mom if she doesn't understand what it means for you to do what you like, but he also says that you should keep the people around you happy. These, at least in my context, are a little tricky.

Gary does say that he is a creature of contradictions. I think it's more because each of these answers and questions really depend on what the relevant people are going through at the time, and therefore cannot be generalized. Still, this book is a good dose of healthy business advice for anyone, if you're careful enough to decide for yourself what works best for you and what does not.

This is probably a nice book if your a Gary-fan, or if your very in to social media. When I saw that the audiobook was read by Gary him self I switched. That made me realize that the audiobook is also richer in content and updated. He also changed his mind of stuff.

Thus it makes more sense to get the audiobook then the printed version.

This book might work as inspiration for young people that dreams about starting a business.

Gary is a character. Many of his ideas and comments are unorthodox. But there are some cherries. Here's the best:
1. "Life shrinks and expands on the proportion of your willingness to take risks and try new things."
2. Ideas are worthless without the exception. Execution is pointless without the ideas."
3. "Don't be afraid to break things. Don't be romantic. Don't the the time to breathe. Don't aim for perfect. And whatever you do, keep moving."

When I first stumbled on Gary Vaynerchuk, his extraordinary confidence made me unfollow him immediately...
About a month ago, a friend of mine insisted that I need to read #AskGaryVee despite my opinion of Gary. Since I am currently heading the marketing efforts of a fast growing startup I decided to give it a try and I am happy I did so. While I do not agree with him on many points, his passion, knowledge, and integrity are undeniable. There are many valuable lessons in this book, from how to create curated and native content to how to run a company. Also, the book is written as a series of questions from real people which makes it quite atypical for a self-improvement book.
Definitely, a must-read for anyone who wants to create a brand for himself or runs an organization that relies on the growing number of social medias.

Gary V offers some actionable strategies for everything from social networking to leading. #AskGaryVee is a short and sweet read, filled with the same in your face, no non-sense attitude that partly made Gary V famous. The book is organized in short digestible sections, which make it great for a book that you can pickup and put down in 10-20 minute segments. I would highly recommend this book for anyone working on anything social networking related, or people trying to boost theirs or their companies online presence. Below are some of my favorite bits:

Absolutely Phenomenal!

This is by far the best book from Gary Vaynerchuk thus far, and I think a lot of that has to do with not only the quality of the content, but the unique format.

This structure creates a somewhat handy reference book, without reading one which is what I enjoyed. Reading it as if I was watching an episode of AskGaryVee made it enjoyable as well.

If there's one thing I've taken away from this first reading it's Hustle Faster, Hustle More.

I certainly expect to be rereading sections and the book in its entirety again.

Very enjoyable business book! I've listened to "Crush It" years ago, and enjoyed it. #AskGaryVee is a bunch of questions, answered honestly. I don't particularly like his youtube channel, but I don't like many youtube channels :-) but I think he has his finger on the pulse of internet business and social media. I think these questions and answers can be extremely helpful for anyone taking on a business involving social media. Warning: he is not afraid to drop F-bombs, so if that offends you, pass this one up!

Gary does it again!

Another great book, maybe even better than the podcast. While I like the podcast, I think that taking a step back and revising his answers really helped make this book excellent. I have read everything Gary has written and this is one of my favorites. Bravo and thank you GaryVee for the booooooooooook.

Great and entertaining book where Gary shares openly very helpful insights on business, life, self-awareness, ... in a new format "answering his followers'/fans' questions".
There is a lot of content to digest, hence it is worth a second read in the upcoming months for a sharp review.
Go ahead, it is worth your time

I didn't actually read this book. I listened to it on audible with Gary as the narrator. I enjoyed the extras you got with him reading. He would sometimes go off topic and elaborate on what exactly he means. I think this is a great motivational book to listen to. Not sure how it is in writing.

Fun Read with Energizing Anecdotes

I was eager to start this book. It took longer to finish than expected. The stream of consciousness style made it challenging to sustain momentum in reading it. Nevertheless, the anecdotes and insights were awesome. Even reading Gary Vee raises the energy level. I am certain that I shall revisit segments.

I gave up on the book. It disagrees with itself when you read it. Some basic business practices are overlooked by his ego. An example, how much is an advertisement worth? Nothing according to Gary. To me it is a business decision of what is the return on the investment.

Some ideas are just dumb and could actually be detrimental.

This is a huge compilation of questions asked from the #AskGaryVee show. A quick summary for someone like me who does not have the time to catch up on all the hundreds of episodes on YouTube. The advice given is still rather timeless. Just skip the portions that don’t apply or topics that you are not interested in. Great candid book!

The Best Modern Day Business Book

Gary Vaynerchuk has the strongest vision out there when it comes to what people care about and how to turn that into something of value. This may be one of the most valuable books you'll ever read. 10/10

Short and sweet Q&A format with some helpful and inspirational ideas but a lot that didn't quite relate to me so I skimmed over. Not a bad read by any means but you could probably find the wisdom elsewhere in other formats as well.
