IVY The world has moved on, but Ivy just can’t. Besides, she has everything she needs on her sustainable-living wooded homestead, and no desire to brave this grim new world.
Until the day a massive bear chases her into an isolated cabin and she discovers she’s not alone.
With a giant bear prowling outside and a gruff, bearded, half-naked savage inside, Ivy finds herself cornered. The man, who calls himself Caleb, says he’ll take her home, but she doesn’t trust him, his offer, or herself with this giant, bronzed, mountain of a man.
He might be able to protect her from the sinister enemies lurking outside—but who is going to protect her from Caleb?
CALEB Shifter by nature, drifter by choice, Caleb is uniquely designed to survive in this dark, new hell-on-earth, where the rule of law has been replaced by brute strength.
His scars may be deep but his secrets are deeper, and until he meets feisty, sinfully curvy Ivy one fateful afternoon, he’s not sure there’s much left worth surviving for.
Finding himself unable to resist the tempting, scrumptious morsel who lands on his doorstep, he realizes she’s the one he’s been craving, and she’s more than worth fighting for.
Caleb is determined to keep her safe from everything dark and dangerous outside. But can he save Ivy from herself?
(This is a stand-alone, no cliffhanger, with an HEA!)

Her writing embodies everything from the spicy to the scandalous, but watch out-this kitty also has sharp claws and her stories often include intriguing edges and twists that take readers to new, thought-provoking depths.
Her books EcoErotica (2009), The Real Mother Goose (2010) and Heidi and the Kaiser (2011) were all Epic Award Finalists. Her only gay male romance, Second Chance, won the Epic Award in Erotica in 2011. Her story, Connections, was one of the runners-up for the 2006 Rauxa Prize, given annually to an erotic short story of “exceptional literary quality.”
I've read my fair share of shifter books and I have to say this is the first one I've read that takes place in an apocalyptic future. As the world as we know it comes to an end, Ivy is left living alone in the woods on her sustainable homestead. She has adapted to a solitary lifestyle and has a healthy fear of the few people who are left. When a chance encounter with a bear sends her running for her life, everything she knows about the world she's living in takes a drastic turn. When Caleb, a bear shifter searching for his brother, accidentally crosses paths with Ivy he immediately recognizes her as his mate. When she bolts into the woods he has no choice but to pursue her. But Caleb isn't the only predator hunting Ivy. Will she be able to accept his help and come to grips with his shifter abilities or will she continue to run?
There was something so touching about the budding relationship between Caleb and Ivy. This book wasn't an over-the-top, alpha male, dominating his female. Ivy is able to stand her ground while still coming across as feminine. I would highly recommend this book to PNR fans.
Selena Kitt is a good writer and I love Bear Shifters so I am in.
Everything that is here is good but all the development is missing. For every chapter that is here, we need another one to really have worthy character development, plot, setting, and romance.
Bear Necessities was almost a perfect novella. It was unique and definitely a great break from the norm. But the end? I just don't understand how things worked out the way they did and there wasn't enough of an explanation to answer my questions... Basically I walked away thinking "huh?!" and "WTF just happened?!". But overall, I really enjoyed this one.
This was a decent story. I loved Caleb and Ivy. Even the little bit I got of Jonah. What I didnt like, which is a huge factor in why my rating is just average, is when the reader is left with no explanation about important plot points. The plot holes in the end are a motherfucker!
I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.
In this book we meet Caleb and Ivy. In this book we find out that the world has ended and Ivy has learned to totally sustain off the land. One day after craving something sugary Ivy remembers seeing a strawberry patch near the edge of the forest, and she wants strawberry shortcake. Ivy knows that if she can get quite a few of those strawberries she can not only make the shortcake but also jams that will last him for quite awhile. However while picking them she runs into a bear that sends her on the run and while running she injures her ankle. There is just something about this bear that makes it hard for her to kill it. She knows she should because it could be her or the bear and she would rather it be the bear. She knows this bear though her father took pictures of it years ago and it is like a small connection to her past.
Caleb knows he has found his mate. He knows it from the first moment her scents her by the strawberries. The delima he has to tell her all about her but he wants time with her first. Caleb doesn't know what to make of his shortcake but he knows that the more time he spends with her the harder it is to keep his hands off her. So when he brings her home and knows that there will be trouble if he leaves her there he finds that he will never be able to stay away from her. While in her house he also learns his shortcakes name as well as part of the reason why she couldn't shoot him. He sees the picture of himself, his brother, and even his parents in pictures taken by Ivy's dad. With his parents dead and his brother missing this is a treat for him to be able to see them again, but he doesn't remember anyone being that close to his family.
This book is about finding love in a time when two people didn't think it was possible. This book is also about trust. Ivy doesn't know if she can trust Caleb but knows she is enjoying the company of another person. This book asks the question where do you draw the line between wanting company of another and trusting the person your with? This book is amazing and has a great twist for the end. This book needs to be on everyone's must read list. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
This was a good story. I liked Ivy and Caleb and enjoyed their story. In this story, the world has gone through and apocalyptic event. Instead of zombies, some people turned into animalistic cannibals.
Ivy lives in a small house in the wilderness. Her father was a nature photographer and a survivalist, making his home totally self sufficient so if civilization ended he'd have what he needed. He died before the crash but Ivy was able to live well in his home, away from other survivors of the catastrophe.
Caleb is a bear shifter that's being hunted by a crazy man. He recently came back to the area he grew up in, looking for his brother. Caleb found an old cabin he started staying in but didn't realize Ivy lived so close.
Ivy is foraging for strawberries in the woods when she encounters a bear. She runs for it and injures her ankle. She can't make it back to her home so she takes shelter in an old cabin she knows of. That old cabin happens to be the one Caleb is staying in so he (being the bear) changes shape and goes inside. Ivy is freaked but Caleb is patient with her and gets her trust. He helps her with her ankle and tries to take her back to her house but they find that bad guys have taken over her house. They have some tough times while trying to figure out what to do about the bad guys. Their issues do give them some time to get to know each other though and the mutual attraction becomes something more. In the end, all is worked out for the best (with a bit of a surprise worked in there) and Ivy and Caleb happily start their HEA together.
This was an enjoyable story. Ivy was a good heroine...she had been put down a lot in the past so she had a bad self image but it wasn't annoyingly bad and outside fo that she was good. Caleb was a good hero and I had no real complaints about him. The story definitely wasn't perfect but it was good, quick read that I liked. :)
* note - This book is supposed to be 150 pages long but mine ncluded a copy of Highland Wolf Pact as a free read. HWP came first so Bear Necessities didn't start until 66% on my Kindle. I'm guestimating that this story is closer to around 70 pages long.
So, the blurb for this says it’s a post-apocalyptic shifter romance. I open it up and it says 1502 Scotland. Um…okay? I start reading and it’s some clichéd arranged marriage between an English beauty/tomboy and an asshat Scottish laird who just wants a doll to show off. So not what the blurb says. After reading about 3%, I look at the Table of Contents and see the actual book, Bear Necessities, is at the back of the book. Seriously?
No. Just, no. If this is a mistake then it should have been fixed. If it’s not then this is the biggest piece of bullshit asshattery and douchebaggery I’ve seen in a long time. I’m guessing here, but since the book is in Kindle Unlimited and available for the Kindle Lending Library, you’re going to make people flip through the book so you get paid more for it. A bonus story is fine, but the story advertised should be the first fucking story in it. I wasted my February KLL pick on this slimy piece of shit tactic. I will never, ever pick up another book by this author. Ever. And I don’t give a filthy rat’s ass that I rated this book without reading the ACTUAL story that’s advertised. What I read of the first story is third rate crap anyway, so my hopes are not high that the quality of the ACTUAL story is any good. And I'm NOT $cha-chinging$ the author by flipping pages until I get to the ADVERTISED story. You know, the one I actually wanted to read. Fuckyouverymuch.
Bear Necessities by Selena Kitt is an apocalyptic shape shifter novel where the world has become overrun by cannibalistic humans. The story takes place in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. This paranormal romance is suitable for adult audiences. Ivy Sullivan has been living in a cabin in the woods by herself after her father’s death. While picking wild strawberries, she comes across an enormous bear that she attempts to escape. Unbeknownst to her, the bear is a shape shifter named Caleb, and their lives are interwoven.
Selena Kitt created an imaginative and entertaining story in Bear Necessities. I found the plot unique among shape shifter novels. I liked the apocalyptic aspect of the story. There were interesting twists that had the characters intertwined. I love that Ivy’s dad was a famous photographer who captured Caleb in his bear form. Being a Nikon enthusiast, I also liked that the dog’s name was Nikon. I found Caleb’s nickname for Ivy amusing and appropriate. They are a cute couple that was fun to read about. Vaughn made an excellent evil bad guy. There were a lot of interesting things going on in this story that kept me engaged.
Complimentary copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
This, as is with most of Selena Kitt's books, was a HOT quick read. Ivy is all alone in the forest - the end of the world had come and she was scrounging around for berries to eat when she happens upon a bear. Little did she know that bear was a shifter named Caleb, so she ran and ran until she found someplace safe. HA! little girl don't you know that when you are all alone in the woods that there is no place that is safe! Anyway, Caleb finds her at his house and...the rest is history. I have to say that this was to short for me, I wanted more, I am hoping that this will be a series. I know the author's blurb says it's a standalone but I am hoping she changes her mind. The chemistry was great with a natural progression and the secondary characters open a wide opportunity to expand on this book.
Who would you like to be with if the world ended, a hot bear shfter?
Ivy thinks she's all alone, it's the end of the world after all. What she never expected was to be confronted by a bear on her search for berries. But what a bear, those eyes are so familiar to her.
Caleb has been hiding from a very evil man, but he is also searching for his brother, but instead comes face to face with his destiny while in his bear form eating berries. But what can he offer a mate in these trying times, trying for him who is being hunted.
Both are thrust together and must hole up till the evil humans who have been horrifically mutated trying to become shifters are gone. They discover that they have something in common, the man who is hunting Caleb is the man that broke Ivy's heart.
I enjoyed reading this story it was very suspenseful and a great HEA even during the end of the world. What future lies ahead for these shifters.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
It took me this long to write this review. I just didn't know what to say. I am sorry to start off with this sentence, but this story was garbage. It was totally bad. This is not the usual Selena Kitt I am used to reading. I will not even go into the story because it's not worth my time or yours. There were a lot of things that I had to figure out in the middle of the story that should have been mentioned at the beginning. This aspect took away from the plot itself.
I also did not get to the know the main characters at all. I did not feel the romance between them. I don't want to be told about a connection. I want to be sold into a romantic adventure. My final words are that I would not pay a penny to buy this book. This was a total flop for Ms. Kitt. There are other stories I would recommend, but this one will never make that list.
Exciting twist in the shifter world from Selena Kitt. The world has ended, only few have survived and some of the survivors have turned cannibalistic. I have to admit, I didn’t realize the crazy world I was stepping into but loved every minute of this exciting journey. Ivy lives alone in the woods, her father prepared well for the end of the world, until one day she encounters a bear at the strawberry patch. This turns her world upside down as Caleb enters her life to save her. Caleb knows Ivy is his mate, how does he reveal his true nature? Will she forgive him if she knows the men that ravaged her home are looking for him?
i received this arc for free for an honest review. I must admit, this is my first experience with a shifter story. I really enjoyed it. Caleb and Ivy were a fun couple to read about. No spoilers here but it is a stand alone with no cliffhanger. I have read other books from Selena Kitt and have thoroughly enjoyed her writing. She writes exciting, sexy, jaw dropping books that keep you interested from page one to the end. I recommend this book Bear Necessities as a must read
3.5 Stars I liked this story and would love to read more books with this group. What I didn't like was it was too short, not enough info was given on how it all started and I thought the ending was rushed and again not enough info. I had a lot of questions.
This book sucked you in from the very beginning and kept you hooked until the end. The love these two find in such a short amount of time is huge and I am glad to see that they were able to find their happy ever after. The narration of this book was great too except for the music at the beginning of each chapter. I felt that it took away from the story as it was a bit distracting for me. Over all a great book worth the listen.
This was quick, but unexpectedly engaging. I wish Ms. Kitt had better explained what happened to bring about the end of civilization, but I like the chemistry between Ivy and Caleb. While there was definitely hot sexy times, it wasn’t as hot as other books by Ms. Kitt, but that certainly didn’t detract from the story either.
I really liked the story on how the end of world apocalypse and shifters concept but it just felt like their was a lot left out. The characters were all great but just felt it could of been a bit more story telling.
There was just too much gore for me to get into the story, it took me out of it really. Also, the couple just, all of sudden, were in love and together. Good premise, no chemistry, and too much bad details
Not bad. I would have liked to know more about what happened/ is happening in the world to make it like that but it was not bad for a shiftier book. :|
Not my usual but it was enjoyable and once I open a book I have to finish it. The stories will keep you wanting to know what happens next, you even forget they are shifters and are dying to see how it turns out
You were always meant to be mine. YABBA DABBA DOOOOO!! This GRRRREAT story starts off with so much humor, but the intensity quickly amps up, taking Ivy & Caleb - and us - on one helluva ride! It is such a unique story - or at least to me it is! - that had so many intriguing features I don't know where to start. It is an interesting world that they live in, as there is no electricity, internet, phones, etc. In fact, some people have gone crazy and yes, there is even cannibalism! I will admit, that I was completely creeped out/grossed out a couple times, even gagging & crying at one part in particular. I know that I am sensitive to certain things, but this story found my biggest one! There is definitely a darker tone to this story, which completely surprised me given the humorous start! But then again, the humor & romance do offset the darker parts almost perfectly, but I was surprised at all of the various highs & lows! However, it doesn't stop the story from being a BEARY good one! But with 'by Selena Kitt' on the cover, what else could you possibly expect?!? Just take note that it says it's a "A Post-Apocalyptic Bear Shifter" book. Besides that, I enjoyed the story, reading it all in one go, no stops, just immersed completely into the story. I have never heard so many interesting - and hilarious - curses before, and I can't wait to try some out. Caleb cracked me up, but oh how I envied Ivy! Stuck in a bunker with a BEARY delectable hunk-o-man meat?!? Sign me up!! No wait, don't! I'm claustrophobic and I don't think that even Caleb could keep my mind off of it for a whole week! But I wouldn't mind trying! ;) Ivy is a FURRIFIC character who had me smiling & laughing throughout the story, but that also meant that I felt her pain & heartbreak too! Which of course is yet one more example of just how talented Selena truly is!! Too be able to keep me fully ensconced into a story while hitting upon the one horror I can't accept, THAT takes a phenomenally talented & genuinely gifted author, and Selena is THAT author! I have loved every single book of hers! She has this magical way to crafting stories that reach out and touch me emotionally, even soul deep, regardless the kind of story it is! Yes I do LOVE her paranormal books - The Divine Vampire series are my ABSO-FREAKIN'-LUTELY favorite, FANGS DOWN - but I have also read a few of her non-paranormal stories and loved those as well! All in all I do recommend reading this FURRY entertaining book for anyone who is looking for a Bear that can think outside the shack! (Reviewer's Note: the horrors that I mention are NOT detailed, nor do they happen in the story for us to live through as it happens, it is the characters talk about those parts, leaving my imagination to run rampant. Which it did! LOL I would like to say that because of this one incident, I am not sure I COULD read the story again, but I think I NEED to read this story again! If only to see if this part really is as horrific as I think it is, or was I just so absorbed into the story the my mind got carried away! It’s been known to happen, especially when I am completely submersed into the story, as I was with this one!)
Bear Necessities Bad Boy Alphas: A Post-Apocalyptic Bear Shifter Romance By Selena Kitt ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I received this ARC copy with the promise of a honest review.
I love reading Selena Kitt's books and I have never read one and been disappointed. Selena is one of my favorite authors, she has set the bar higher with this book . I fell in love with this book and it's now one of my favorite and what a story! Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down, that's how awesome it is! This well-written novel is a perfect example of entertainment at its best! It's a action packed, must read, romantic, suspense, sci-fi, shifters and fantasy all in here. This is a storyline that has twists and turns that will keep you compelled to keep turning the pages until you finished. The descriptions are very vivid with details that pulls you the reader right into the story. The characters are well developed and the dialogue is fantastic and entertaining!
OMG! I have to say it again, what a absolutely fantastic book! Ivy and Caleb both find themselves alone in a world that neither of them ever thought it would happen. Ivy lives alone in the woods after her beloved father's death she has a college degree but nothing to do with it. Caleb is a bear shifter who is a ex marine and he is searching for his brother. Both of them were eating berries when they saw each other, only he was a bear. This scared Ivy so she runs she wanted to shoot but she felt there was something familiar about the bear. What does a bear do when someone run from him well he chases them. This is the start of a life altering relationship. There is danger for them both in the woods. They don't know they have a enemy, but the attraction between them is scorching hot. But Ivy has trust issues because she is a big girl and her ex-boyfriend humiliated her by sleeping with his landlord the entire time they were together. Caleb has a secret and he doesn't think she can handle his secret.
This story has drama, suspence, intrigue, twist that you would never believe and always, great sex. This story line wad absolutely one of the best. One of my favorite parts of Bear Necessities is that there was an absence of the usual insta love that drives me nuts in what I affectionately call "shifter crack". There is an awareness that there are bonds but the tension between the characters is drawn out a bit before they are hopping in bed. I really liked the backstory. I would love to read more about them and some of the other characters introduced in this story.
I love that Ms Kitt always has some surprise and even though I expect something, she still manage to give that surprise. I am a fan of both her erotica and romance stories for life. This is a fantastic book to add to your TBR list .
If you believe in the world of paranormal romance, the possibilities are endless and fascinating!
I received this for an honest review. Love Selena Kitt’s work. This book was awesome. There are a few surprises along the way. If you have read any of Selena’s work before you know you are in for a real treat.
This is a time in which they do not have luxury. It is the end of the world. There is no sitting down watching TV, going to the movies, no computers or phones, no going to the grocery or restaurant, or even driving from one place to the other. People are something you did not want to meet. Many had lost their mind. There was no compassion. When people saw you they saw a meal. They would kill to take what you had.
Ivy Sullivan was lucky in a way. Her father had prepared for the end of the world. Had stocked up plenty of food, ammo, guns, and necessary items. He had trained Ivy how to defend herself if needed. Even had a bunker she could go to if the house was no longer safe. There was no possibility her dad had not prepared for, well expect Ivy finding true love.
Caleb was a werebear. He had spent this time alone. When he first saw Ivy he could not help but scent her. He knew she was his mate. Their first meet was very funny. I guess thanks god Ivy did not shoot and kill him. Would not of been her fault under the circumstances. My picture image was a bear sitting up an almost waving at her..LOL
Ivy and Caleb are in danger. Caleb is doing his best to keep his mate safe. Caleb is finding several things a challenge. He is trying his best not to jump her and take her, to keep her from finding out his secret, and to keep her from going back to her house. How will Ivy take the news that Caleb is a shifter and everything she is going through is his fault. Well at least that is what Caleb thinks anyway.
I like that you see so many things in this book. You see love, adventure, danger, and a happy joining. Selena has really out done herself. If you love shifter books and a good storyline you will love this book.
