An account of the development of Hollywood. This is the story of Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe and stars like John Gilbert and Clara Bow, both of whose careers finished with the change-over to sound.
I go back to this every once in a while - because Barry Norman was my film critic hero as a child, but also because it is well written and contains brilliant stories behind some major films.
I was too young to really appreciate Barry Norman but this is an extraordinarily well researched and well written history of Hollywood up until 1987. Prescient and funny and intelligent- I do wonder what Barry would make of present day cinema.
