Chip’s daily run takes him past a large, vacant, Spanish-style mansion on the Intracoastal Waterway in Fort Lauderdale−the “Venice of America.” His interior decorator instincts flare as he imagines living in the mansion with his lover Ariel. Image the pleasure when he first meets Darius, the seductive owner of the property, then is requested to provide guidance on landscaping the expansive grounds and given a tour of the premises. As recompense for his efforts, Chip and Ariel are invited to dinner.
Ariel is immediately as entranced by Darius as is Chip and the couple enthusiastically accept an invitation to a larger affair at the mansion−a Midsummer's Eve celebration. Wine spiked with hallucinogenic herbs, a mysteriously appearing yacht, skimpily clad dancing youths, and the transformation of Darius into something supernatural threaten the two young men’s sanity.
A subsequent invitation to a private dinner places Chip and Ariel in danger of being ensnared in Darius’ dark clutches. Any hope of rescue rests with Chip and his ability to perceive reality through the shadowy fog of Darius’ psychedelic manifestations.
Excerpt: The meal is unbelievable. Darius's chef has prepared a sumptuous four-course banquet complete with a different wine for each course. I'm no wine snob, but each one has to be over a hundred dollars. Ariel is equally entranced by Darius who greets him in formal Spanish, then makes him the center of attention throughout the meal. My curiosity is piqued by the fact that what I can see of Darius's chest hair shows signs of becoming white. His long black hair also has white in the temples. After we eat our host takes us on a tour of the mansion pointing out the artwork as we amble through the many rooms. "What do you think of this chest?" He asks Ariel. "It was probably made in Spain and carried to the New World, full of household items and clothing for a wealthy nobleman." I'm flabbergasted, wondering if he knows Ariel is an antiques dealer specializing in Spanish Colonial art and furniture. I'm also confused by the fact that despite being on the Intracoastal where the homes are pretty much lot line to lot line, no other residence overlooks the property. The balconies are strategically placed to face only the Waterway and the windows look out to a windowless wall, palm trees with fronds at just the precise height to obscure any view. Back in our humble condo, Ariel enthuses over the evening. "The food and wine were superb. The house is magnificent with over a million dollars of art and furnishings. As for Darius, he's so handsome. What hypnotic eyes! And he never made a move on us." "Do I hear disappointment in your voice?" "Maybe; but he invited us to a Midsummer's Eve celebration next week. If the 'small dinner' is any indication what would a grand party entail, an orgy?" "You're a sex fiend.
