The Last of the Bowmans
After an absence of some seven years, Greg Bowman returns from America to find his father lying in a bamboo coffin, his estranged brother Billy stalking a woman with no feet and his 79-year-old Uncle Frank planning to rob a bank. While renovating the family house he is unexpectedly visited by the presence of his dead father and charged with the task of ‘fixing’ the family. In the course of his reluctant investigations, Greg discovers not only the secrets behind the strange behavior of his brother and uncle but also an unsettling secret of his father’s, and one that brings him face to face with the unintended consequences of his own past. The Last of the Bowmans is the story of a family on the run from itself in a city with no place to go.

He worked in a foundry, as a bus conductor, trained as an accountant and then, when the opportunity to return to academia arose, left for Mississippi, returning four years later with a doctorate in 20thC US History and more knowledge of Darlington Hoopes than was arguably necessary. (Hoopes was a Pennsylvanian socialist and the last presidential candidate of the American Socialist Party). American History departments were either closing or contracting, so he opted for a career in publishing, most of which was spent selling textbooks, in one position or other, for John Wiley & Sons. He lives in a house in England, drives a car and owns a television set. And that's about it.

Das Buch war wirklich außergewöhnlich. Die Charaktere waren so liebevoll und realistisch gestaltet, man hat seine Mitmenschen geradezu wiedergefunden. Der Humor war außerdem genial. Dennoch steckte viel Ernstes und Wahres dahinter und es war spannend, diese Familiengeschichte zu lesen. Ein neues Lieblingsbuch für mich! :)

I have never read any of J.Paul Hendersons books before and have to say when I was sent this book I was a little unsure. It did however totally surprise me as it was a fantastic book based around the Bowman family who are so amusing with their quirky but endearing ways. Greg Bowman has to return to England when his father Lyle dies and he needs to attend his funeral and try and sort out his house, his brother Billy and him have never got on but he can't quite put his finger on why but they have to overcome it to be able to get the repairs done and the house sold. All seems to be revealed later in the book.
Greg stays in the house while he is in England and is surprised to get a visit from his father and told that he needs to 'sort out the family'. It seems his Uncle Frank has a habit of getting himself arrested and for the strangest of reasons. Brother Billy is acting 'strange' and Greg needs to find out why. His father said he hadn't had time to get them sorted before the bus ran over him. I loved the black humour and the quirky characters and found myself laughing out loud in some places. A thoroughly good read.

I picked this up in The Works for 99p after reading the first page and laughing my head off.
Greg Bowman comes back to Yorkshire to attend his Dad’s funeral to find his brother obsessed by a woman with no feet, his Uncle Frank handing himself in to the police for crimes he hasn’t committed and the family home with a massive crack in it. As if this isn’t enough, his niece thinks that she’s Britain’s answer Brittany Spears and his Dad’s being cremated in a bamboo casket.
I found this book to be funny and heartwarming whilst telling the story of a family who have lost the plot. It is an entertaining read but at times it seemed to lose its way by delving into subjects that weren’t overly necessary to the story. Overall I enjoyed this and I’m giving it 3.5 stars.

The story starts when 83 year old Lyle Bowman walks into the path of a bus and is run over. Not very funny in itself but J Paul Henderson had me chuckling from the beginning with his one-liners.
This story is about families, their ups and downs, disagreements, loyalties, dislikes and why they are like they are.
Before Greg left for America he fell out with his brother Billy and they hadn't spoken again until their father's funeral. Over the course of this book we discover lots of family secrets and grudges that had been long hidden, Greg finds out what sort of person he really was growing up, life always came easy to him - exams, girls, work, but not so easy for his brother.
My favourite character was elderly Uncle Frank, he was so serious but I found him quite endearing:

The scenes where Greg's deceased father appears to him and asks him to mend his family were the most memorable and touching for me. Lyle was a dour husband and father who always tried to do his best for his family and didn't want them to fight and argue. He wanted to pass on to another life knowing that they were okay again.
I liked the writing, the quirky storyline with quirky characters, it was definitely different to any other book I've read, but it's also a book that I'll remember for some time.

I laughed out loud at this and cried in parts too. A very good friend sent me this copy, thank you Carol N Peace.
Having read none of J.Paul Henderson's books before, and always eager to find a new author , I opened the book, read one page, then two, and had to read the rest slowly, just so I didn't finish the book!
Greg is home, from America, to attend the funeral of his dad, Lyle, and is none to pleased to find his father being layed to rest in a bamboo coffin.
As he begins to renovate his father's house, to later sell, his father Lyle, visits him (yes I.know he's dead) and tells Greg, he has a job for him, he has "to fix the family" not an easy job, when you have Uncle Frank, who at 79 is about to rob a bank, and then there are the secrets that Billy his brother has, and one his dad has kept hidden for years.
I loved this book so much, I had to buy another, Larry and the Dog People.
If you love books like A man called Ove and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, then this is for you. My copy? ha ha is going back on a shelf, ready to re-read, when I need a feel good book , l

This book could have been just a cliché ridden average read. The story is that a son returns from abroad due to his father's death. He comes home to his relatives (all of whom are quirky) and deals with the past as well as his own future. We have all read that story before.
This is a lot better than most due to the author. There is dark humour as well as an overpowering sense of love in his words. The family is not dysfunctional, but rather it doesn't realise the function it needs to have. It is "lump in your throat" hard to read at times but never in an unrealistic way.
The author writes characters as well as any author I have discovered in the past few years. This backs that up with a plot that you really care for and want to finish.
This is a virtually undiscovered book that should become famous. It is that good.

This is the second of J Paul Henderson's books I've read. The Last Bus to Coffeeville was recommended by a friend and it didn't disappoint. When I read my review of that book, I realised that this one had the same effect on me because of many similarities, even though the stories are very different.
The Last of the Bowmans is the story of a man returning to England from New York after the death of his father. It is a beautifully crafted story that observes human character and spins a believable, resonant and warming story. There is poignancy, laughter and drama as the son sorts through the life of his father and brings together the various aspects and people in his life. The story felt real and the people in it felt real.
Highly recommended.

A charming funny and witty book. It makes you laugh out loud and I’m sure we can all use more of that during these strange times facing a global pandemic.
It is set in Yorkshire and tells the tale of the Bowman family who are a rather peculiar but funny group.

Whilst renovating his fathers house his Dad appears as a ghost and encourages Greg to fix the family. His brother has foot issues, his uncle is planning to rob a bank and his father has a secret. Greg tackles the problems head on with surprises along the way.
A lovely story of family life and eccentricity all told with humour, a great read with something new on every page.

Sieben Jahre haben die Bowman-Brüder Billy und Greg nicht miteinander gesprochen, als ihr Vater plötzlich stirbt und Greg, das einstige schwarze Schaf der Familie, zurückkommt. Was er vorfindet, ist ein bröckelndes Elternhaus, Onkel Frank, der mit 80 einen Banküberfall plant, und eine beunruhigende Erinnerung mit pinkfarbenen Haaren. Da braucht es – neben viel Phantasie – schon übersinnliche Hilfe, um den väterlichen Auftrag zu erfüllen: aus alldem wieder eine Familie zu machen.
Schon der Klappentext verspricht einen außergewöhnlichen Familienroman mit einer guten Portion Humor. Der Schreibstil gefällt mir außerordentlich gut, er lässt sich gut und flüssig lesen, er hat einen besonderen Witz, wie schon im Klappentext angekündigt.
Die Charaktere konnten mich jedoch nicht so begeistern. Die beiden Brüder Billy und Greg könnten unterschiedlicher nicht sein, beide waren jedoch für meinen Geschmack zu vorhersehbar gestaltet. Jeder Charakter in diesem Buch hat eine Macke, wie es menschlicher nicht sein könnte. Aber viel mehr war dann nicht zu holen, ich habe ein bisschen mehr Facettenreichtum erwartet. Insgesamt sind die Charaktere allesamt sehr humorvoll beschrieben und sie sind durchaus liebenswert (nun gut, bis auf Billys Frau Jean…) aber für mich nicht sehr authentisch.
Die Handlung ist auch von dem alles begleitenden Witz geprägt, ich musste oft schmunzeln und habe mich gut unterhalten gefühlt. Insgesamt war der Ablauf jedoch recht vorhersehbar, an einigen Stellen wurde ich jedoch überrascht. Die Handlungen einiger Charaktere waren für mich jedoch wenig nachvollziehbar. Trotz der eher humorvollen und flapsigen Ausgangslage des Buches verstecken sich auf den Seiten viele Aussagen, die mich zum Nachdenken angeregt haben.
Insgesamt ist ‚Der Vater, der vom Himmel fiel‘ ein humorvoller Roman, der gut unterhält uns es dennoch schafft einen nachdenklich zu stimmen.

I'm sure I would have enjoyed this more had I read it about 20 years ago, with its quirky deadpan humour. Now I felt it lacked a certain depth. Don't get me wrong, this story deals with themes of life, death, mental health and cowboys but there's a certain simplicity in the way things are treated. I warmed to the character of Uncle Jack but most characters weren't very complex. And if the character was a woman it was probably a nag or a snoopy neighbour, or they were very nice but dead. The supposed main character Greg is an anti-hero that learns very little during the time the story is set: his father dies, he manages to make up with his brother and to express feelings he hadn't before, finds out he is a father but still that doesn't alter the way his life proceeds. Bit of a wasted opportunity in human/character development. It got me to chuckle a couple of times so I think it deserves the rating 'it was okay'.

Nach dem Tod von Lyle Bowman kehrt dessen Sohn Greg für die Beerdigung nach sieben Jahren erstmals aus den USA zurück nach England zurück. Während er im Haus seines Vaters lebt und dieses mit seinem Bruder Billy für einen Verkauf in Schuss bringt, wird er immer wieder vom Geist seines Vaters heimgesucht, der noch ein paar letzte Dinge zu regeln hatte. Diese Aufgabe fällt nun Greg zu, der dadurch ein paar alte Familiengeheimnisse lüftet und seinen Vater "nachträglich" besser kennen lernt.
Das Buch ist voller schräger Charakter, die man als Leser schnell ins Herz schließt. "Der Vater der vom Himmel fiel" ist so ein Buch, bei dem man viel lächelt und hin und wieder richtig losprustet. - So ging es jedenfalls mir.

Wie ihr anhand der Inhaltsangabe wahrscheinlich gemerkt habt, dreht es sich bei "Der Vater, der vom Himmel fiel" um ein eher... merkwürdiges Buch. Ein Achtzigjähriger, der eine Bank überfallen will, ein erwachsener Mann, der Angst vor Füssen hat und nicht zuletzt ein Tod durch Überfahren eines Buses sind alles nicht gerade alltägliche Dinge, doch genau das hat das Buch in meinen Augen zu etwas ganz besonderem gemacht.
J. Paul Henderson hat einen tollen Schreibstil - witzig und trocken zugleich. Er reisst keine grossen Witze, sondern bringt seine Leser durch kuriose Figuren und Situationen zum schmunzeln.
Das Buch handelt wie gesagt von der Familie Bowman und ihren Problemen. Ich fand die Geschichte toll, da sie eine gute Mischung an eher ernsten Stellen und Gedanken und witzigen Situationen beinhaltet.
Einziger Mangel aus meiner Sicht ist, dass die beiden Brüder Greg und Billy sich viel zu schnell und viel zu einfach versöhnt haben. Das hat die ganze Geschichte rund um ihren Streit meiner Meinung nach etwas unglaubwürdig wirken lassen. Denn wenn zwei Menschen sechs oder sieben Jahre lang nicht miteinander sprechen, obwohl sie Brüder sind, muss schon etwas Ernsteres vorgefallen sein und ich glaube nicht, dass es dann innerhalb weniger Tage, ohne richtige Aussprache plötzlich wieder toll zwischen ihnen laufen kann.
Ansonsten fand ich das Buch aber höchst unterhaltsam und toll und deshalb bekommt es von mir vier von fünf Sternen!

In dieses Buch geht es um die Familie Bowmans, speziell um die männlichen Familienmitglieder. Auf den ersten Seiten verliert der Vater der Familie Lyle Bowman das Leben (das ganze wurde komisch dargestellt, ich persönlich finde das aber nicht so lustig). Die anschließende Beerdigung wird sehr skurril dargestellt - auch ich musste da ab und an Grinsen.
Die Protagonisten sind vom Charakter her sehr ausgeprägt -was das Buch für mich sehr interessant macht. Das ganze Buch ist von einem (mehr oder weniger) komischen/witzigen/skurrilen Faden geprägt - das Buch bietet tolle Unterhaltung. Ich konnte aber an den Stellen, wo es vorgesehen/gewünscht wäre, nicht immer lachen, aber habe mich dennoch gut unterhalten gefühlt.

I picked this book up on sale for only a quid. I read the first few pages in store and was hooked. This book tells the tale of the Bowman family. The cast of interesting characters leaves the reader excited to find out what happens next. The feel good ending really does the book justice. My favorite part was definitely the dark humor the author uses.
I would highly reccomend giving this book a go.

I didn't expect much from this book having picked it up new and cheap but it was a very solid read. I highly reccommend this for fans of British humor, personally that's not my thing but I still chuckled at points and was engaged until the end. The blurb paints an extraordinary picture but it all makes sense with context!

Nachdem ich Daisy und Letzter Bus nach Coffeeville gelesen habe und mir beide sehr gefallen haben, war diese Lektüre Ehrensache. Und es ist wieder ein Buch voller schräger, liebevoller Figuren, die man in sein Herz schliesst. Ein tolles Leseerlebnis und hoffentlich folgen noch viele Bücher von ihm.

nach sehr viel weird girl fiction mal wieder bisschen zeitgenössische pathetic middle-aged men story. Vielleicht ist es die Übersetzung aber es war beim lesen die ganze Zeit so peinlich, dass ich richtig erleichtert war als es mal offensichtlich absichtlich peinlich war, wisst ihr? Durchaus kein unangenehmes Leseerlebnis (außer die weiblichen Figuren, das war einfach nur Horror)

I love this author. His characters are relatable and funny. This book is set in England and is full of British charm. It is a great easy read with lots of eccentric family members. I can't wait for his next book.

The story starts on a slightly depressing note but ends up as a heartwarming story of relationships after a series of revelations. Although there are dark commentaries in-between, the writing is witty and includes many laugh-out-loud moments.

3 stars is probably over generous for this book. I personally found it very difficult to follow the story and then it becomes apparent about what it happening, it is certainly not as good as the first books

Aww I really liked this story! The first chapter was brilliant and I laughed and smiled at so many different parts. Sometimes I need a break from crime and thrillers and this book was perfect!

Really really funny in a seemingly effortless way with some unexpected and pretty damn bizarre twists and turns! A nice easy read whilst still having depth, emotion and lovable characters.
