"The memory of the righteous is a blessing." Proverbs 10:7
And so we know the familiar saying "out with the old and in with the new" is far from true as we live, move, and have our being in the Church. Our past cradles God's magnificent story of salvation as found in His Word, and intertwined with the Lord's story, are the stories of those who are His.
Celebrating the Saints introduces you to a collection of saints in both Testaments and from 19 centuries of the Church's life. Historical sketches and devotional writings in step with the liturgical calendar reveal each saint not as a great exception, but a great example of our Heavenly Father's faithfulness. As you encounter the lives of these men and women redeemed by the Lamb, you'll gaze into "a mirror of the grace and mercy of God" (Martin Luther).
Our fellow heirs of eternal life serve but a humble purpose to point us to the Saint, the Holy One, our Lord Jesus Christ.
I've been known to say that Will Weedon could talk about dust and I'd give it my full attention, so I was thrilled to grab his new book! It is a devotional that is set up according to the feasts, festivals and commemorations of the Lutheran Service Book. Our church history is important and while we don't worship the saints, or pray to them in any manner we can learn from them. We recognize they were imperfect, forgiven and, as Pr Weedon says, "...through them God has given us a mirror of His grace.". Beautiful writing and illustrations, love the use of hymns & prayers. "The memory of the righteous is a blessing." Proverbs 10:7
This is a perfect companion to the Treasury of daily prayer to be read alongside the shorter commemorations of the saints. This thoughtful work provides enough detail to the lives and faith of our calendar of saints to excite and strengthen the faith of me and my children without overwhelming even the littlest among us. Thank you Pastor Weedon for this delightful addition to our home school.
Great resource for Lutheran families, especially if you use the LSB. May have limited use outside that audience since it’s specifically tied to the sanctoral calendar in LSB, but it’s also just a nice resource of brief devotions on Christian feasts, festivals, and commemorations for anyone interested.
Finished on the festival day of St. Philip and St. James. It is appropriate and encouraging to remember and appreciate the faith of great heroes of faith throughout the ages as models and examples for us. They were faithful, often at the cost of their lives, through far more difficult circumstances than what we experience. Pastor Weedon has a lively, interesting and informative writing style that is especially enjoyable. Great resource to keep and refer to throughout the year.
This is an excellent supplemental resource for Treasury of Daily Prayer, although it stands on its own as well. Weedon works through each feast, festival, and commemoration on the Church calendar, with an explanation for each one, a collect prayer, and a hymn stanza appropriate to each. Highly recommended for personal or family use!
