Dr. Grant Sheldon's move to Dogwood Springs wasn't the panacea he'd hoped for when he brought his children here, but with Christmas approaching and the chance of a new and lasting love hovering just beyond reach, he perseveres.
In addition to taking on more shifts in the ER, Lauren McCaffrey agrees to stay with Grant Sheldon's twin teenagers when he is forced to fight a frivolous lawsuit from his former life. She soon discovers that keeping track of two headstrong sixteen-year-olds carries some unexpected dangers as well as some overwhelming blessings.
After the hospital administrator falls ill, the ER is left under the questionable leadership of an unhappy doctor with his own private agenda and a painful personal life. In the midst of the turmoil both Grant and Lauren are forced to come to terms with the pain of loss. Can they also find the joy of hope renewed?
Necessary Measures combines the breath-catching pace of authentic emergency medicine with the comfort of small-town faith and values.

Below are a few of our favorite excerpts from our latest release, Double Blind. We promise, no spoilers. -------------------------------------------------------------- Sheila walked out of the room and forced herself to aim for the back entrance, where a park-like setting lured her to gentle woods and a walking trail just outside that door. Unfortunately, knowing Preston was in the office made her steps falter. The man was like a banana split with whipped cream, nuts, and cherries on top, with three of her favorite flavors of ice cream—chocolate, coconut, and almond. ----------------------------------------------------------- He gazed down into that ultra-feminine face with the gamine features, hazel eyes, firm chin. Why did all the women in his life have such stout hearts? His own sister had battled threats from a stalker for years. His mother continued to battle a wicked mental illness with a brave spirit that had been bruised and wounded again and again, but never broken. ----------------------------------------------------------- "You can battle your fear, and even the spirit of evil, only with good. All good in my life comes from the Holy Spirit of God, not from my own strength or so-called magic words or ancient rituals and symbols. From God alone." ----------------------------------------------------------- "Nobody has the right to control me."
"The One who creates has every right to control His creation. When we allow Him to guide us, we're wisely acknowledging His role in the universe." ----------------------------------------------------------- "I was dedicated," Preston said. "My whole family was dedicated. He was the One Who turned His back on us. I finally got the message strong and clear, even though my family didn't."
"The Shepherd doesn't abandon His sheep," Blaze said. "That wouldn't have been a message from God." ----------------------------------------------------------- "What has her faith offered her?"
"So that bit about everlasting life and heaven and all that soared right over your head in Sunday school?" Blaze asked. ---------------------------------------------------------- On Monday morning, the silent beauty of passing scenery lulled Sheila to the edge of slumber. The ochre and mauve of the peaks, and the uneven, jutting edges at the horizon, the gentle turquoise of the unbroken sky, had drawn her heart back to this place over and over again. She allowed the colors to settle into her soul as her eyes closed. ----------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for your support and happy reading.
"Necessary Measures" is a Christian medical suspense novel. It's the second book in a series. You don't have to read the previous novel to understand this one, but I'd recommend doing so anyway as it's a good book and you'll enjoy this one even more if you do.
The characters were interesting and complex. The various characters dealt with real issues in realistic ways. There were quite a few viewpoint characters in this novel. All of them had major troubles at the same time, so it felt a little...overwhelming. If I hadn't gotten emotional connected with half of these characters in the previous book, I'm not sure I'd want to stick it out with all of them in this one. There was plenty of suspense--from relationships, a lawsuit, job stress, sleuthing danger, medical emergencies, etc.
The Christian characters' faith affected their decisions and everyday life, and the Christian elements felt like a natural part of the story. Christianity was portrayed in a realistic manner, from how Christians often act to how the non-Christians reacted.
There was no bad language or sex. Overall, I'd recommend this suspenseful novel.
The drama continues in Dogwood Springs, Missouri. I've become quite attached to the residents of this charming, small town. I found myself cheering them on to overcome their personal struggles. I admire their tenacity to bring an end to the drug problem in their community. This novel is fast-paced with several twists and turn that kept me engaged until the end.
Recommend to readers who enjoy medical suspense.
I borrowed a copy through Kindle Unlimited. All views expressed are my honest opinion.
Book 2 in The Healing Touch series. You'll want to read these 3 books in order, though the author does explain the characters briefly. Vivid characters, life and death situations, and Christian romance. I like the Christianity, and was even glad to see how much the author portrays the fact that, even though we're Christians, we make the same mistakes as everyone else. I highly recommend this book, as well as the other 2 in this series. This husband and wife team make an awesome writing team!!!
Wow!! Talk about a Season 2 comparison to an ER TV Episode! The ups and downs of the character's every day life. This one had deaths and happy situations with romance and inspirational learning moments throughout. The community coming together in a small town to rid drugs. This was well written. I recommend to read it in order of the series.
I love this Healing Touch Series; as well as the previous series by Hannah Alexanger: Sacred Trust, Solemn Oath, and Silent Pledge. The characters and life themes feel real, as do the emergency room experiences.
I like the fast pace and familiar people you love and some not so loveable from book one. Er is jumping and added to that a rude, hash doctor. And a pastor with a heart of love and compassion. A must read. More than ready for book 3.
Good book, and continuation of a good series. I believe I liked the first book "second opinion" a bit better just because it had more suspense. I found it a little slow going, but still enjoyable.
I enjoyed this book that dealt with the struggles of a small town dealing with drug issues and a doctor who wants to do the right thing but is dealing with a lawsuit. Filled with exciting adventures and twists and turns this is full of hope in the midst of the struggles.
Glad to see good guys win. Evan and Brooke make a good investigative journalism team. Grant has a good outcome. Archer and Jessica’s wedding happens. Tony carries on with his police work.
Just finished the book. I liked the 1st one more, and am looking forward to reading the 3rd one in the series. Necessary Measures was fast paced. Lauren is an amazing character.
If you enjoy ER dramas and small town settings, then you'll probably enjoy this series. I was drawn into this story from the start and enjoyed the twists and turns in the lives of the ER staff, and also the wider community. There are a few ends that still need tying up, so I'm looking forward to getting Urgent Care - #3 in the Healing Touch Series & seeing what happens next!
This story does continue on from #1 Second Opinion and contains a lot of background information for this story, so you are probably going to want to read that first.
Last time I read this I was a junior in high school. A lot has changed in 13 years, but I still love Dr. Grant. As an adult, I can appreciate his restraint and maturity. I unfortunately related too much to Nurse Lauren and I just wanted to shake her. This was my favorite in the trilogy and it was lovely to revisit these characters. The action and drama were just as palpable as I remember. I still can't stand Pastor Archer's wife, Jessica. She was incredibly annoying and I skimmed her scenes. I loved all the medical procedures and learned a lot while reading. Necessary Measures was a fun, easy read that helped while away the time while I waited for my electricity to return during Hurricane Helene. I will mentally picture this series as a duology because the final installment was an utter disappointment. Looks like this author pair didn't pull Necessary Measures to make sure Urgent Care wasn't at the same level as it's predecessor.
This was another great book by the husband/wife duo! I just loved reading about all the characters in this book. There were happy times and sad times. There were multiple POV from both Lauren and Grant, Grant's son, and even the bad guy. The authors built on the stories from the first book as more truths come to light. The twins were a hoot! I loved them!!! Seems their father's hair is probably turning pretty gray and there was mention of grounding them a couple times.
The saddest part for me was Lauren getting bad news from someone close to her. I couldn't even imagine! Though there is some romance in these books, they are more drama and suspense than anything else. I love Grant and Lauren...
It's exciting and it targets the younger generation's problems with the drug pushers and their bullying of the innocent to do the drugs. Lauren takes care of Grant's twin teenagers and learns a lot about the trials of parenthood also. She becomes a little more attached than she thought she would to them and wonders what it would really be like to be a wife and mother. This book kept me on the edge to the end and as usual loved the characters!!
A beautiful story with several very strong plotlines and excellently built characters, with believable lives and experiences, that converge into this wonderfully written Christian-based storyline.
