Island Book One
An Isle Novel

Dr. Jeff Martin has spent five years as a rural general practitioner on the Isle of Wight, hiding the fact he’s gay. He travels in secret to see his partner, Tris, but when he discovers Tris has been cheating on him, he ends their relationship. Then Jeff meets island native Cameron Gillard. Cameron is down-to-earth, lively, and treats Jeff like he’s the most important person in his life. Jeff blooms under Cameron’s attention, and he decides to come out to his colleagues and friends.

Just when things are going well, Tris reappears out of the blue. Jeff is no longer interested in Tris, but it seems he has two men to convince. Tris, who can’t believe Jeff is serious about wanting to end their relationship, and Cameron, who can’t hide his jealousy of Tris.

Jeff is certain about one thing—the only man he wants in his life is Cameron. Now he just needs to prove it to him.

Thoroughly enjoyed this first book in the Island Medics series. I have been following the cast of characters since "Isle of ...Where?" and having them show up as part of the story is wonderful. I'd say this book can stand alone as a lovely read, but having some background via Ms. Brown's previous Island books gives added depth.
The main characters were wonderfully rendered although times there were when I wanted to grab them by the lapels and give them a good shake, to get some common sense into them. This applied to both characters. (so yeah, I can get immersed in this world.)
All said, though, loved it. Definitely worth the wait...but, am anticipating the next book with bated breath. I too wonder if it will be Logan's story next. He really set some bells ringing even in the brief appearance he made.
Thank you Sue Brown for another wonderful story.

I'm a Sue Brown newbie; I've not read any of her other series, but I found no trouble keeping up with the characters and situations in the story, which does reference friendships and situations between characters from Sue's The Isle series and even a cameo appearance by two more characters from her Lyon Road Vets series.

Jeff Martin has been in a ten year relationship with Tristan Smithers. For the last five years Jeff's commuted every chance he's had to Manchester from his home and practice on the Isle of Wight to see Tris. When he discovers Tris has cheated on him Jeff dumps Tris and goes home. On the ride home Jeff bumps into Cameron Gillard, the gorgeous great-grandson of one of Jeff's patients.

Cameron quickly stakes his claim, and the two begin a new relationship.
He could hear Cameron muttering something, and he raised his head. “What did you say?”
Cameron looked him in the eyes. “He’s not having you back. You’re mine now.”
Still lost in the haze of his orgasm, Jeff stared at him. It was too soon for such a declaration. God, he’d just split from Tris. This was a hookup, rebound sex. Wasn’t it? “I don’t want him back.”
Cameron nodded. “I know what you’re thinking, but I promise you I’ll look after you. I won’t hurt you.” He tucked Jeff’s hair behind his ear. “You don’t need to be scared.”
“I’m not scared of you,” Jeff protested. That much was true. He wasn’t scared of Cameron, but he was scared of falling again so quickly. He’d never been a player. Tris had been his third relationship ever. “You seem so sure.”
“I’ve known you were it from the moment I met you.”

I think fans of Sue Brown's will be very happy with the new series and eager to see where it goes.

Personally, there were some situations that had me shaking my head. (Examples: Because Tris has never once in five years bothered to come to visit Jeff on the Isle, and Jeff always commuted to see Tris he tells everyone that he's going to see his girlfriend "Trisha". But Jeff can never remember the name of his fictitious girlfriend...even though he's apparently been lying about it for FIVE years. Also, Brown writes that Jeff's suspected, then that he's been aware, of Tris' infidelity for years, but writes later about how Jeff didn't know and was gutted.)

Regardless, it's a sweet, romantic story that covers the relationship growth between Jeff and Cameron, some hot smexy times, and has only minimal angst and some light miscommunication and hard-headedness.

I wish it weren't so, but I didn't really get that invested in the story and didn't really connect to the characters. Bottom line: For me, it wasn't a hardship to read, but it didn't thrill me either.

Review originally posted at Sinfully.

This was a light, easy romance with minimal angst, a bit of stubbornness and some sweet sexy times as Jeff and Cameron fall into an unexpected romance.

Although the start of a new series set on the Isle of Wight, this series also incorporates the characters from Sue Brown’s Isle of Wight series. Fans of Sam and Liam (The Isle of... Where?) and Paul and Olaf (Isle of Wishes) will definitely want to pick this one up as those couples and their continuing stories are featured as secondary characters. If you haven’t read those books, you’ll have no problem with this one as enough information is given about these characters and Jeff and Cameron have not appeared before.

When Jeff, a general doctor on the Isle of Wight, breaks off his 10 year relationship after having confirmed his suspicions that Tristan was cheating, he just wants to return home and lick his wounds. When he runs into Cameron on the ride back, he reluctantly takes the man up on an offer to go out for a drink the next day. Jeff had only briefly met Cameron before, but knows him as the great-grandson and carer for a patient of his. When their drink turns into a day out with the Owens’, Jeff begins reevaluating the choices he’s made in the past five years. The chemistry between him and Cameron is strong, and socializing for the first time with other gay men on the island, it becomes clear that his days in the closet are going to have to end.

Although their relationship moves rather quickly it’s not completely insta-love, but Cameron does stake his claim early on. Cameron is a force of nature basically moving into every aspect of Jeff’s life and turning it upside down. He is sweet, fun, a little possessive and very stubborn. He also has moments where the disparity between his job as a mechanic and Jeff being a doctor makes him question why Jeff would want him and suspect Jeff’s true intentions towards him. While Jeff is a bit wary of things moving so quickly and of whether he is repeating the same behaviors that led to the demise of his relationship with Tristan, he clearly wants Cameron in his life for the long term.

The book is very relationship focused without too much outside interference. Jeff does have to deal with Tristan (the ex you’ll love to hate from the moment you meet him) and Cameron has his family matters, but none of that outweighs the romance. When Cameron ultimately makes a stupid, impulsive move, I liked that Jeff didn’t let him get away with it too easy, opting to “forgive but not forget”.

As far as the secondary characters go we’re introduced to the manager and the doctors at Jeff’s practice, therapist Logan (who I hope will be getting a book in the series) and Cameron’s family, but those featured most prominently are the men of the Isle series. As I’ve read all of those stories I was happy to see them again since there were threads that were not finished that carryover here. I’m not sure if new readers will find their stories confusing or distracting, but I think enough background is given when Cameron introduces Jeff to the men early on.

If you like a relationship focused story with walks on the beach, a coming out, and sexy times between two men who deserve some happiness, you’ll enjoy this story. It had a realistic feel and a lovely setting and I’ll be looking forward to the next book to see how everyone is getting along.

This review was written for Joyfully Jay Reviews and can be found here: http://joyfullyjay.com/2016/01/review...

Dr. Jeff Martin is a closeted gay physician on the Isle of Wight. He’s been in a committed relationship with his college romance, Tris, for the past ten years, though they live hundreds of kilometers apart. It is always Jeff—on his rare weekends off—who drives for a visit. Never Tris, not once in the past five years. And though he resents this one-sidedness in their relationship, Jeff’s resisted all efforts and cajoling on Tris’ part to move to Manchester. Jeff has a strong suspicion that giving up his country practice to co-habitate with Tris will only frustrate him more. Because he doesn’t believe that Tris really respects him, and he secretly suspects—very, very strongly—that Tris is not (and will never be) faithful. Still, Tris flaunting his indiscretions is the final straw, and Dr. Jeff returns to his lonely Isle not quite alone.

No, Jeff encounters the beautiful and lovely Cameron Gillard on the ferry back to Wight. Cameron is the great-grandson to one of Jeff’s more beloved patients and having her in common they strike up a conversation. And arrange a date. Cameron is a younger man, twenty-eight, and a car mechanic on Wight. He loves his family dearly, and especially his Gran, who he minds tirelessly. I loved the way Cam and his friends swallowed Jeff whole into their well of love. Jeff had isolated himself, even in his own space on Wight, and needed friends.

Being seen in the company of “known gays” pretty much outs Jeff to the local populace, it seems, but he takes the second step to confront his partners in practice, and the support staff, who are almost totally supportive. And his attraction to Cameron is certainly ramping up. It was a bit heartbreaking, honestly, to realize the depths of isolation in which Jeff lived. He’d had a home for five years and never one guest. Cameron was soon installed all over his cottage. But Cameron was so cagey about his own history, and situation. Jeff was suspicious—and I think having Tris so fresh in his mind was problematic because Jeff was a man who wanted clear answers, and Cameron’s reluctance to reveal more caused Jeff to wonder and suspect issues that were never there.

Cameron got serious fast. I liked his self-assurance, and the assurances he made Jeff, but Jeff and I shared reservations, especially as Cameron had a bit of a chip on his shoulder regarding being less educated, or wealthy, than Jeff. I really liked how Jeff handled those issues.

I’m used to reading stories where a couple splits at the beginning and we never hear from the other as the story follows the new love story. Not the case here. Tris becomes more than “the former boyfriend” and bothers to drive out to visit Jeff—more than once. The first time as an attempt to win Jeff back. Upon learning that Jeff and Cameron are together, Tris tries to insert himself into their equation, and that does cause problems. Cameron’s an impulsive, heart-on-his-sleeve guy—which Jeff admires to some degree—but his reactions to Tris’ baiting were far more extreme than I think either of them could take. Expect an interlude of solitude, and some deep soul-searching.

That said, this is a good read, with a calm plotline, nice sexy times, and interesting characters. Jeff is a faithful man and narrator, and his feelings, while confused at times, are always true. He adores Cameron’s affability and easy affection. Jeff had been so forlorn, even in his relationship with Tris, that he sucks up every ounce of care that Cameron lavishes on him. The book is filled with charming people, and quiet moments, only a bit of drama at the end, and even that is on the understated side. The love story develops kinda quickly but lasts long—months before we have any real hiccups—and it’s an HEA. It’s the first book in a series, and there’s a cast of characters here that will surely be fodder for stories down the road.

I’m a big fan of Sue Brown and I was really loving this book right up until Cameron so over reacted to a text from Tris. I was so disappointed because it was completely irrational. When he explained his reasons for the way he acted I would have walked away. He showed a complete lack of trust and Jeff let him get away with it. I dropped two stars from my rating it upset me so much.

On the ferry back to the Isle of Wight he meets Cameron.

Somewhat formuletic, Brown introduces the titular doctor in flux, and his fellow MC islander, struck by Love at first sight. The relationship grows and at 80% of the pages, has its crisis. A resolution unfolds into a HEA. Brown's excellent writing of heated scenes enriches the narrative.

Man kriegt was man sich erwartet.

4.5 stars. I received my copy from the author.

Island Doctor is a wonderful romance. It is mainly the story of two men coming together and building each other up. Jeff needs support and care after the man who’d been his partner for ten years not only cheats on him but also admits to a history of betraying him. Jeff is strictly a one-man guy and can neither understand nor accept the way in which Tristan has betrayed him. What Jeff needs is a man who only sees and loves him; a man for whom he is not only enough but the whole world.

Enter Cameron. Cameron is a force to be reckoned with. Cameron doesn’t take no for an answer once he’s decided what he wants, and Cameron wants Jeff. Cameron needs to be the sole focus of his partner. To say he sweeps Jeff off his feet would be an understatement, and he is exactly what Jeff needs.

They get to know each other as Cameron eases Jeff out of his shell and shows him that while acceptance may not be universal, it is certainly widespread. But Cameron has a few chips on his shoulder and one or two insecurities to overcome himself. When Tristan decides to push for Jeff, Cameron overreacts and….well, you’ll have to discover what happens next for yourself.

There was so much to love about this book. The story flows with admirable ease, the characters were intriguing and the story mostly light-hearted while not afraid to look at life as it really is. Watching Jeff come out of his shell was adorable and heart-warming. The two men together were beautiful and very...very sexy. And I loved the mention K.C. Wells and her books got in Island Doctor, but that may be because, like Sam, I’m a huge fan of her stories. J

I did have one reservation though and I’m going to mention it although I realise that what pulled me up is probably very attractive to a majority of romance readers. Cameron was, for me, too overbearing on one or two occasions. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the author’s intention, but he scared me once or twice. Other than that, Island Doctor was a pure joy to read and I’m looking forward to upcoming stories in this series.

Jeff is a doctor that lives and works on the Isle of Wight. He is still in the closet at work and pretends to have a girlfriend, though in reality, he has a long distance relationship with Tris, who lives and works in Manchester. The relationship is very one sided, it’s Jeff that does the travelling between the Isle of Wight and Manchester, until that is, he discovers Tris’s betrayal!

Then he meets Cameron, the great grandson of one of his patients.

Cameron is full of life and combined with his big heart, Jeff cannot resist and falls in love with him. But Jeff hasn’t learnt from his past and starts to rely on Cameron – maybe too much? and he realises that he has to change, this relationship is too important to him not too.

On the outside, it would seem that Cameron is very confident, but he has successfully managed to hide some of his own insecurities, till a certain point. Jeff on the other hand, still feels a little unbalanced, after a 10 year relationship failing – and I could understand that, but they needed to learn to trust each other and find a happy balance.

I really like Sue Brown’s books and I was very sad when she decided to stop writing, so when I saw this book’s release, I was a very happy reader.

The book is connected with her Isle Series, so for anyone that has read them, you will be happy to be reunited with Sam and Liam and also, Paul and Olaf. You will see what they have been up to and also some of the MCs from the Lyon Road Vets Series. It appeals to me when authors link their series and mix previous characters with new ones. But please don’t worry if you haven’t read any of these books, this can be read very easily as a stand alone, but be warned and prepared, you will want to read those previous books!

And last but not least by any means, you get to meet a much loved author, but to find out who she is? you will have to read the book!

I really want to read more (hint, hint author).

***3 Stars for the Start of a New Series***

This is a very low-angst story, and since I’m an angst adorer, it made this fall a little flat for me. Jeff has a schmuck of an ex who has never put forth any real effort in the relationship, yet Jeff stayed with him for a ridiculous amount of time. When he finally realizes the man is regularly cheating on him, he walks - right into the arms of his favorite patient’s great grandson, Cameron. Cam is a quiet, unassuming type who adores the matriarch of the clan and is willing to bend over backward to make her happy. His new mission? Making Jeff happy, too.

The plot is very straightforward and mostly drama-less, almost to the point of boring. The pacing is a bit slow, but both are made up for with the peripheral cast of characters, which are full bodied and really enrich what would otherwise be a fairly bland story. The main characters fall for each other in a New York minute, which bothered me somewhat, but in the end, I have to admit that I was happy that they got their happy.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

A very sweet novel, but there’s not a lot beneath the surface.

Jeff is in the closet, a doctor in a small town, and has been in a long distance relationship for the last ten years. Somehow, everyone but him knew that his boyfriend, Tris, was a cheating jerk. Jeff finds out, is heartbroken and shocked, and breaks things off.

Enter Cameron, the sexy grandson of one of Jeff’s elderly patients. Within hours of the awful breakup, Jeff and Cameron are already connecting emotionally. Jeff questions how fast they’re moving for about two-point-five seconds, then they fall in love.

And that’s it. That’s the novel. I mean, there’s some minor drama about Tris trying to get Jeff back, and at one point Cameron throws an unrealistic temper tantrum and everyone gets moody and angsty, but it’s a very even-keel novel.

This is a fabulous new series set in the world of Isle. A world I happen to be very fond of.

First off, Jeff is an idiot. I loved the guy, but he had way too much going for him to put up with Tris’ mess. Thankfully, he finally gets a clue.

Enter sexy Cameron. These two could not be more different, if they tried. But, somehow they work. Well, they work after a few hurt feelings, a major misunderstanding and some sweet sheet time.

All in all, a very nice beginning to a new series.

Definitely recommending.

“In the end you don't so much find yourself as you find someone who knows who you are.” ~Robert Brault, rbrault.blogspot.com

Jeff Martin, of 'Island Doctor' by Sue Brown, is happy with his life as a doctor on the Isle of Wight. It means he has to drive back and forth to the mainland on the weekend to be with is partner of ten years, Tris, who wouldn't dream of living on the island and thinks Jeff is mad to want to do so. Jeff has been doing it so long that he doesn't give the weekend trips much thought; it's just the way thing are. One day, on the way to the ferry, Jeff's car decides to break down...again. Jeff is rescued by Cameron Guillard, who happens to be a mechanic. Cameron helps get Daisy running again and Jeff is on his way.

This time Jeff's trip to Tris's ends up being a lot more than he bargained for. Tris isn't there; Jeff waits for him to come home. When Tris strolls in the next morning, he's not apologetic at all; he and Jeff argue about where Tris has been. During the confrontation, Tris admits that he has been cheating on him for years and pointedly informs Jeff that he has no intention of stopping. Knowing he deserves more, Jeff tells Tris it's over and returns home. Jeff meets Cameron on the ferry back and tells him about his breakup. Cameron is sympathetic and offers to take him to a pub to try to cheer him up. Until now Jeff has been leading a double life, i.e., no one on the island knows he's gay and everyone thinks that he has a girlfriend on the mainland. Jeff no longer has to lie about his life, but he's still nervous about coming out, afraid of being treated differently. Now that he doesn't have to drive back and forth on weekends, it gives him more free time to enjoy life, but Jeff has no idea where to start. However, having a drink with Cameron certainly seems like a step in the right direction. Even though it's too soon, Jeff can't help but be attracted to Cameron and feel more comfortable with him than anyone else.

After the first night, Cameron and Jeff are inseparable. Cameron introduces him to the other gay men on the island, who sympathize with Jeff about his breakup. They also fill him in on their gay community and Cameron is determined to show Jeff what he's been missing. Cameron is assertive, almost to the point of being possessive, but in truth, after years of Tris's indifference, Jeff may just need it. But exhibiting such strong emotionalism is often followed by jealousy and insecurity. When Tris shows up to win Jeff back, the enormity of the situation blinds Cameron to reason and he screws up spectacularly, almost irrevocably breaking Jeff's trust and causing unnecessary hurt for everyone.

The island is a world unto itself and can't be compared with any other place. There's a charm about it that has to be experienced. I'm invested in the island and in the marvelous characters Sue has written to populate it. I enjoy the wit and humor of this community as well as the eccentricity Sue so deftly blends with the circumstances surrounding her characters. I enjoyed visiting with the residents I'd met in previous stories and smiled at inside jokes even before they were explained to the newcomer. Going back to the island was like visiting old friends while looking forward to meeting new ones. I realize this is meant to be a stand-alone book, but without reading the 'Isle' series beforehand, I can't imagine how anyone could get the whole picture about this wonderful community and its sometimes odd but always wonderful, caring inhabitants. Thanks, Sue, for allowing me to revisit the island. I can hardly wait to see whom I will meet next.

This books starts off with one of the towns docs finally getting fed up with his 10 year relationship with Tris and ending things. He's only single for a few hours before Cameron steps in so no big deal there! Well, he's technically single for about a week but still.... If you haven't read the "Isle of Wight" series by this author then the other characters in this book will make absolutely no sense to you. I'd say to definitely read those books first. It was so wonderful to get the continuing stories of all three couples from those books. Now back to Jeff and Cameron. They didn't have nearly the craptastic time the other couples had so I'd rate them pretty low on the angst scale. A bit of a misunderstanding but nothing overly dramatic. Love getting to know all the characters surrounding these men. Will be moving on to the next on soonish.

Where did he come from?

I was a good story but Cameron came out of no where and he was planted in with the main characters as if he was always there. A new character would at least be introduced in the series before hand, just like Logan was. I do like both Cameron and Jeff though. Jeff is the Island Doctor and is down to earth and a responsible man who got hurt by his boyfriend but he gets the better deal with Cam. I really liked Charly and I think her and Mattie should be joining forces. Both mothers together would be a real hoot.
He is a question from the last book with Wig and Nib. If the 2 of them were the ones that had a key to the restaurant, with the exception with Karen that one time they needed her to open, then how did the Owenes continually get in to help them out? They surprised them by opening after the break in. How?

This was wonderful! I loved Jeff and Cameron and so glad that Jeff had dumped his cheating boyfriend and that he didn't move to Manchester. What I loved about this story is Cameron's love for Helen which made me think of Rose and the how much love these families have to share. I never liked Tris and he was such a jerk to think that Jeff would come back to him and his sly text that caused Cameron to walk out on Jeff was infuriating. It was awful when Cameron was hurt but I was glad they did have the serious talk and Cameron moved his things back into Jeff's house. I was so glad that Jeff made Liam see Logan and that he is doing better. I love these stories so much and am looking forward to Logan's story.

This book tells us the story of Cameron and Jeff.
Jeff has just broken up with his cheating boyfriend Tris when he first meets Cameron. Although Jeff has lived several years on the island already, it's Cameron now who introduces him to the "gay crew" of the island. At first Jeff is reluctant, sure he shouldn't come out of the closet but he quickly realizes that basically everyone has known for a long time that he prefers men.
I enjoyed reading this book up to the point when Cameron reacts quite immature to a text on Jeff's phone. Yes, there's an explanation for his behavior a bit later, but it still annoyed me.
Nevertheless, it's a nice feel-good story with a well-deserved happy ending for the two of them.

Island Dr is a sweet romance. I wasn't aware it was from another series but can see that now. The story is good, There are many characters that had such a large part it took away from the main characters. I did enjoy the story.
Adam Rivington did an excellent job narrating. I think he brought the story up a notch. I love the accent, and I like the special effects like when they are talking on a phone or intercom.
