Hank Hudson doesn't stand out in drab Great Depression America. The middle child has always gone unseen and ignored, even before the stock market crashed. When his parents have to move the family cross-country, it's no surprise that they accidentally leave him behind. Seven decades before the invention of cell phones, Hank has to make a stay put and starve or find his family. As he sets off with his best friend Dog on a long journey, he stumbles into a hidden world filled with mystical power, mysterious people, and buried treasure. It turns out, Hank has been turning himself invisible his whole life. He can't wait to tell his family, if he can only outrun a dark force that threatens to take control of his mind and his heart. Hank Hudson is the first book in a series of middle grade fantasy adventure stories. If your middle school student likes colorful characters, action-packed plots, and adventures across the country, then they'll love Clark Chamberlain's thought-provoking Depression-era tale.
Clark Chamberlain is a true son of the west. Born in northern Idaho during the nation's bicentennial, Clark has always been a man on the move. He’s lived in ten states and two countries on two continents. He’s been homeless, built houses, gone to war, and tore his lunch cooler from the mouth of a bear.
This constant traveling has made him a wanderer, always in search of himself. On the way he’s met some of the most interesting people in the world, all of which gives him the ability to write about the incredible world he sees.
Clark is a veteran of the Iraq war, the author of three books, illustrator of two children’s books, and is an educator on storytelling.
Ever since I had first heard about Hank Hudson on Clark’s daily podcast The Write Life, I was more than excited to read it. Now that I have finally read it, that excitement was more than justified. I loved getting to know Hank, his trusty companion Dog, and I really enjoyed every step of his journey as he searched for the family that had left him behind. This book was full of action, adventure, colorful characters, (I really liked Misha) and a surprise twist that caught me very off guard, which has made me very excited for when the next chapter in the Hank Hudson series is released! I very much enjoyed this book, and I can’t wait to share it with my family. This is definitely a must read that will be enjoyed by all ages.
Fantastic! I love how the author uses the characters and plot create a believable story filled with emotion. I lost myself in Hank's struggles and triumphs. As with any good book- it definitely leaves me wanting more!
I thought it was a delightful mid grade story. Hank is an engaging character as are many of the people he encounters. Looking forward to the next installment.
A fun book. I was hooked at the very beginning, as I immediately identified with Hank. Not to far in felt like the story started to stall, but when it picked back up it all made sense. There was also one of those tingling, aha moments that I just love. Great characters and storyline.
Life was not easy for the Hudson family during the Depression era, especially for Hank. In Hank Hudson (Volume 1) by Clark Chamberlain, Hank is the middle child amongst eight children. Hank seemed to always be invisible to everyone. Even though Hank’s birthday is between his brother Joseph and sister Helen's birthdays, his was always forgotten every year. One day it was decided that, for a better life, the family needed to relocate to California. Hank was excited about the new beginning and thought maybe in California he would no longer seem invisible to everyone. In the midst of preparing and helping his family get ready to travel across the country, ironically, Hank was forgotten and left behind. Follow Hank on his journey as he travels across the country to join his family in California.
Hank Hudson (Volume 1) by Clark Chamberlain is an interesting story because of its fantasy and sci-fi appeal. How would you feel if you were always treated as invisible or forgotten? Just like Hank, anyone would be initially sad and depressed if they were left behind by their family, but being invisible became an asset to Hank and his family in the end. Children of all ages will enjoy Hank Hudson (Volume 1) by Clark Chamberlain because of the twists and turns that happen throughout the story. You can read this to your children or it’s easy enough for children to read on their own; either way they will surely enjoy it. Happy reading!Hank Hudson
I really enjoyed this children's book. It was written about a young teenager boy Hank Hudson is a middle child in a large family. He has spent most of his life being ignored and unseen. When his family moves cross country he is accidentally left behind. The book was written during the great depression so there is no cell phones and no way for him to get ahold of him so he heads to California with his best friend dog. He finds that he has actually been invisible at times and there are more people like him. Hank finds a hidden world filled with buried treasure, mystical power, and mysterious people. I found the book fun to read and must read for the middle child in every family.
I received this book as part of a GoodReads contest. Hank and Dog are an endearing pair and I really enjoyed reading about their first adventures. Hank is uncompromisingly honest and both he and Dog are uncompromisingly loyal to one another. Hank is achingly naive in the beginning but begins to see through more wisened eyes as the story progresses. I was intrigued by the combination of the supernatural and the Depression-era setting of this story and look forward to reading the next installment in the series. Go Hank!
I won this book in a goodreads giveaway. It was good for a middle grade novel. If I was younger, I probably would have enjoyed it more. The story follows 12 year old Hank Hudson and his dog named Dog. The story follows Hank and Dog after Hank gets left behind when his family moves. As the middle child in a household of nine children he has spent his whole life being forgotten. The fantasy elements did not show up until later in the story but I liked the concept of the ley lines. Overall, it was a good story.
Hank Hudson won my heart over in a split second. I thoroughly enjoyed Hank's adventures, the history involved, and his resiliency as a young boy. Hank is an inspiration to young and old. My students enjoyed Hank's adventures, too, and have asked for more Hank Hudson books for our classroom. I can see this being a story being read at home for the whole family. Thanks to Goodreads First Reads for a copy of Hank Hudson. I look forward to more adventures by Hank. Thanks, Clark.
I tried to like it more than I actually did. I can't tell if it's simply too young for and normal for the style. I didn't like how this book ended - basically a climax with no denouement. Plenty of threads to move onto book two but book one doesn't FEEL complete to me.
I won this book from a goodreads giveaway. I thought it was a great middle grade book. Very unique storyline, fun characters (I love Dog!), and very well written. As a middle child I can related to Hanks woes, and I appreciate that this book is about Hank learning to accept and embrace who and what he is.
