In this concluding story of the four-book series of Trails, George Northwood lands in the Civil War in Virginia when he travels east from Oregon to further his medical studies. He teams up with a young nurse from Montana and also rescues a small orphan boy. While performing the duties of an army doctor, he is forced to don the uniforms of both sides, and so finds himself in the ticklish situation of having to prove his loyalty to the North as well as to the South. He also faces the horrors of a POW camp in the process. Through it all, God's hand shelters him and molds him into the man He created him to be, accomplishing His purpose in George's life.
