The Diwan
A welcome new translation of a classic text of Sufi poetry by a great Moroccan scholar and spiritual master who died in 1971 at the age of 103. He left this famous Diwan, a collection of sacred poetry, as a guide to the sincere seeker of gnostic truths. This fresh translation by A.R. Fitzgerald and F. Aresmouk is intended to facilitate this for non-Arabic readers, by including transliterated text and translation as well as the original Arabic, with numbered poems and a table of contents for easy navigation. Included is also the original introduction and litany by the Shaykh as well as a biography of him by Moulay Abdelkebir al-Belghiti, a biography hitherto unseen in English.

Is there really anything I can say about Sayyidina Shaykh's diwan that hasnt been said before? It's a truly beautiful diwan collecting the wird and teachings of Moroccan shaykh Muhammad Ibn Al Habib, which has, for good reason, inspired countless amounts of people in the Islamic community, with the likes of Peter Sanders, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf. It's easy to see how this one text has inspired an entire subculture within the British Muslim community in the 60's/70's and how a whole aesthetic and way of practicing the Path started with this man's blessed lines.
Definitely recommended to someone who enjoys Sufi poetry and looking to seek the Path to Allah.

These are the teachings of Sidi Muhammad ibn al-Habib who died in 1971 and is buried in Meknes, Morocco. Like many other Sufi shaykhs, he put these teachings into songs --- poems that are chanted to this day all over Morocco.
Although the Diwan was translated before in 1970s, this is the first edition which combines Arabic, transliteration, and meaning. In addition, the translation has been revised with the help of two Moroccan Sufis with intimate knowledge of the meaning of the verses. It also includes an introduction, never before translated, on the life of the Shaykh as well as notes on the meanings of certain words in the poems themselves.
