In 2765, the Star League Defense Force was the greatest military ever assembled, unparalleled in numbers and technological prowess—but it was not alone. The House Lords and the rules of the Territorial States in the Periphery each amassed armies of their own. While none of these powers alone could challenge the sheer size and might of the SLDF, each stood ready to defend their own interests against the avarice of their neighbors.
2765 Field Report: CCAF describes the state of House Liao’s Capellan Confederation just before the events described in Historical: Liberation of Terra (Part 1), including the overall military and logistical condition of one of the Great Houses that would eventually survive the collapse of the Star League and face a new age of endless war.
Available in electronic format only, this was the first in a new series of faction-specific publications intended to accompany the main Star League-era sourcebooks and focuses on the state of the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces (CCAF) as of 2765. The book is written from an in-universe point of view, presented in the first instance as a report from the Star League Intelligence Command (SLIC) to the Commanding-General of the SLDF, with an additional introduction written three hundred years later by a Brigadier working within the Republic Armed Forces HQ, providing the original report as a contextual document for study by RAF units in an effort to better understand the history and character of the CCAF.
In common with the other books in this series, this book begins with a general overview of the state of the CCAF and the Capellan Confederation, giving strategic and logistical updates on the state of the military incorporating details on the various military academies scattered around the realm, the role of mercenaries and the Capellan Navy and the underlying infrastucture. The main portion of the book is a breakdown of the various brigades of the CCAF via a series of one-page entries. This is followed by a brief rules annex, including random assignment tables, and then two Technical Readout-style entries for new WarShips, the Black Lion I-class battlecruiser and the Soyal-class heavy cruiser, followed by a deployment map before finishing with record sheets for the two new WarShips. Other than the record sheets and some illustrations the book is in colour throughout, with illustrations of the unit insignia for each Brigade, plus the new WarShips.
Although this Field Report is the shortest in the series, it's also one of the most interesting and satisfying for me. For much of the history of the game the CCAF has been the weakest of the Great House militaries, and this Field Report makes great use of this by taking the opportunity to list a number of Brigades that were wiped out during the Succession Wars, with enough detail to give a sense of flavour to each. While some of the formations would begin to be rebuilt in the most recent Dark Age-era books, others such as the Andurien Hussars only effectively exist through this publication, even though their origins lie in the earlier Age of War. Every regiment within the book receives at the least a nickname and a brief mention, enough to give each Regiment a distinctive feel, making it ideal for those looking to adopt a regiment from the Star League or Age of War eras for their own games.
Both of the two new WarShip designs detailed in this Field Report are interesting. The Black Lion I effectively fixes a problem in place in the game universe for more than twenty years, redefining the pre-existing Black Lion as a later refinement of a much earlier class, while the Soyal, previously only mentioned as the name of an unsuccesful candidate for the programme that saw the SLDF buy the Luxor instead, is established as the first class of WarShip to include a Mass Driver as anything other than a retrofit - and fits nicely with the naval history of the Capellan Confederation, being an interesting and advanced concept that became an overweight and limited design, explaining in part the lack of success experienced by the Capellan Navy during the First Succession War.
Although primarily aimed at BattleTech players, the Field Report also includes a detailed breakdown of the makeup of the Capellan Navy, making it very useful for recreating canonically representative BattleSpace games from this era.
