Treacle, Cath's magical black cat, is missing. Meanwhile, in the mysterious town of Wonder Falls, a beloved chocolatier dies. The police deem the cause a heart attack, but Cath, Bea, and Aunt Astrid know something more sinister is at play. And whoever is out there has Treacle.
"Cat-astrophic Spells" is the third novel in a new cozy mystery series featuring modern-day witches and their magic cats
Thie e-book was a courtesy of the author herself, thank you for providing me with this lovely read!
A third in the series, Cat-astrophic Spells can still be read as a stand-alone. I have yet to read the second book, but I had no problem following the plot or the characters. The premise was interesting and the writing had me on the edge of the seat. Overall, pretty eerie, I liked it a lot. There were some grammar mistakes and inconsistencies when using the names of characters, but that's probably because I have the ARC copy (Also, I'm very sorry it took me so long to finally get around reading it, but life kept me busy - at least this way I can seamlessly move onto the next book!).
This is the third book in the WONDER CATS MYSTERY SERIES, and it is the best book yet. When Treacle (Cath's black cat) roams as usual but doesn't come home, the search is on to find him. During the same time there has been a murder in Wonder Falls, and signs point to some sort of witchcraft is involved. The three witches, with the help of Bea's husband/detective, try to figure out who the witch is, and solve the murder. Alas even with their witchy abilities, it isn't an easy task! It is however, a good story with twists and surprises. If you like cats, witches, mystery, and friendship, then you will enjoy this book. I recommend reading the series in order, but if you are determined to jump right in, Ms Lin gives enough back history (as needed) that you will enjoy this book on it's own without any confusion.
Another fun instalment in the series, Harper Lin has been taking over my TBR recently. Her books are fun and light, short and I don’t need to focus too much to follow along. And this one is just like the others.
I found the new witch so insufferable and was . I am not really sure why our witches don’t find it easier to stop her as they are actual magical beings with Aunt Astrid being described as super powerful. Also, Cath is the queen of super stupid decisions, but at least it played out well this time.
Huh. Finished the book and enjoyed it before realizing it wasn't what I would call an actual mystery. The reader cannot possibly figure out the Bad Guy: you're just along for the ride.
This has been my favorite book so far in the series. I love that we got more of a look into Cath's relationship with her family and how she feels about them. And I really liked seeing more of her relationship with Treacle, it was very sweet and not to sound 'crazy cat lady' it made me miss my sweet girl a bit. It will sound silly, but I liked that Marshmallow had more of a role in solving the mystery. It was nice to see how Bea and Jake are doing and how their relationship is going, and I enjoyed the bits with Jake being honest about how he feels about everything. My favorite part though was that the mystery felt more evolved, and the universe grew more expansive then it had in the other books.
While you can read this book without reading the first two in the series, it definitely helps to understand the relationships in the book if you read them in order.
I absolutely love this series. I have read the entire series and recommend it to everyone. Especially those who love cats, witches, mysteries, and family. I will warn you though, you will not be able to put it down. There are tons of twists and turns. It grabs you from page one. What do you do when you have a missing cat, a murder, and witchcraft all together??? You have a great book by Harper Lin Looking forward to book four, I know it will be purrrfect.
This series just keeps getting better and better. I can't remember reading anything with this kind of witchcraft before and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This story kept me guessing throughout and it wasn't until the very end that I was able to figure it out. I am curious about Detective Blake Samberg though. He is quite a mystery and I can't wait to find out more about him in future books. You will enjoy this cozy mystery from beginning to end.
Cat-astrophic Spells is the first paranormal book by Harper Lin that I have read. I loved her noir detective stories so I thought I would give this book a chance. The storyline moved along at a good pace. The main characters were given the most back story but other characters did not seem to develop equally. I am not a fan of paranormal stories but I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan.
This is a great series and this is the best one yet! This book will quickly grab your attention and keep you reading. There are plenty of twists that will keep you guessing. I look forward to reading more in this series!
I received a copy of this manuscript from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Absolutely Spell-Binding!! By far the best book in this series! This time the girls are facing evil in the guise of black magic. Murder, possession, & catnapping are all twisted together in a fast-paced, well executed story . I couldn't put it down- I read it cover to cover in one sitting!! *****10 Stars******
Cat-astrophic Spells by Harper Lin is the third book in A Wonder Cats Mystery Book series. Something dark is coming to town. The cats are all afraid. Cath Greenstone, her cousin, Bea, and her Aunt Astrid are going to have to battle this dark entity while trying to find Cath's cat, Treacle. Will they succeed? I will post my complete review soon.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. I really enjoyed this third book in the Wonder Cats Mystery Series! These books are very entertaining and can be read as a stand alone novel. I highly recommend this book and am eagerly awaiting the next book! Harper Lin is a wonderful and creative author!
I just finished reading book 3 of the Wonder Cats series and very much enjoyed them. I was able to read them in order and don't know if that helped but I thought each book was well written on its own. Cath may not always b the most likable of main characters but she seems honest and real. Looking forward to book number 4.
This was really quite good. I have enjoyed this series, and all the fun elements like the Lady of the Mists and the cats talking to the MC. The mysteries are almost scary but not so believable that they are truly frightening (not like Stephen King, who I CANNOT read). REally enjoyed this one.
This is the third book in the Wonder Cat's Mystery Series. It is easy to follow this series even if you haventr read the first two books in the series. A cat goes missing and there is a murder with witchcraft suspected.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my review.
I enjoyed it very much - I like the story line that keeps growing with Cath, Bea and Aunt Astrid and of course Treacle. I foresee lots of adventure for the women and their family "gift". Thanks Harper!
Cath's familiar has not been home in three days, they've had a strange death in town and someone is trying to scare the Greenstone witches and the other two cats.
This is the third of a light, enjoyable cats and witches mystery series. It's quick and fun to read and makes you think you might like to stop by the cafe for lunch or a cup of tea.
What a fun read! Witches and cats equal a good read with plenty of cat conversation. I liked the idea of a fake witch. I enjoyed this book. I received the book from the author.
So far my least favourite of the Wonder Cats mysteries. The series got me super excited when I heard about it. Three witches each with her own cat and her own power, one of whole can speak with cats. I was looking forward to down-to-earth mysteries being resolved with some magical and animal help. That's not what those stories are about: so far all the mysteries are magical and the stories are less about figuring out who did it and why, and more about finding ways to explain in a non paranormal way what happened so that the culprits can be punished. That disappointment isn't anyone's fault but my own: I can't expect the author to write the books I want to read rather than the ones she wants to write.
BUT this episode is just poorly written. Some of the many inconsistencies: - when the narrator, Cath, heard about the murder early on, she also hears about how sad the daughter was and starts suspecting her out loud to her aunt and cousin. Next chapter the three of them start talking about theories and wondering if the victim had any children. That conclude that they have no idea. - Blake, who in the first story recognized Treacle immediately when first seeing him because of talking about him with Jake so much, and then taking care of him at the shelter in the second book and interacting with him in other ways, says "he's the big black cat, right?" like he's not already familiar with him. Doesn't even mention the star on his head, his most defining feature. - in one scene Astrid and Cath go see someone named Brit. Bea stays behind. During that scene, Brit is called Bea once (okay, I guess the name is similar) and Astrid is suddenly "Aunt Bea". Wasn't there an editor at some point?
There have been small mistakes in previous books, like pets changing sex within a story or between stories, and some inconsistencies between the end of the first book and the beginning of the second one but... This one is a lot worse.
It's a shame because the cats themselves are cute, and I loved the Cape Bay series by the same author.

Lin is a seasoned cozy mystery writer, as such she creates novels that serve both as a stand alone and part of the ongoing series. In book 3, our three witches, Cath, Bea and Aunt Astrid are back in business at the Brew Ha Ha cafe. A quiet booth, screened with curtains is set aside for Astrid's readings. Levi, the skeptic, prodded by his wife, sits for a reading. Minuets pass and he stumbles out pale, trembling, confused. He leaves with his wife, and Astrid tells the others. He doesn't realize that he can channel spirits. Someone or something told me a murder is happening. Right now.
From this moment on I didn't put the book down until I finished it. Complicating the mystery, Treacle, Cath's familiar, is missing. He is a lovely black wanderer, coveted by the villain. His fellow Wonder Cats, Marshmallow and Peanut Butter help. Peanut Butter is still too young for most magic, but Marshmallow shows feline courage. She who prefers the comforts of inside life accompanies Cath into a dangerous situation. The witches and the cats know the villain is not a true witch. Rather she is one who has hacked into the world of black magic.
Using this ill gotten information, she has already killed. Will Cath become her next target? Will Treacle survive? Have the Greenstones met their match? There is darkness in this cozy mystery that leads a reader to further ponder how power should be used.
A very good book for these stressful times. Recommended for all readers from young adults through seniors.
"Cat-astrophic Spells," by Ms. Harper Lin, is the third book in the "Wonder Cats Mystery" Series. My softcover copy has 260 pages, including end pages.
Treacle is the black feline familiar of Cath Greenstone. Cath's major Witch power is that she can communicate telepathically with animals, especially cats. However, Treacle, Cath's feline familiar, is missing, and she cannot communicate with him.
She soon finds out that an evil sorceress has Treacle, and intends to use him to magnify her evil sorcery power. Incidentally, this evil sorceress killed a chocolatier, and one must be super evil if they kill a person who makes and sells chocolate, and no, that is NOT sarcasm.
It shall take Cath, her sister, Bea, and Cath's Aunt Astrid, as well as their respective feline familiars to save everyone else from the evil sorceress, as well as everyone--human and animal--in Wonder Falls.
It had been a while since I had read a "Wonder Cats Mystery," but I truly love anything that Ms. Harper Lin writes. Her Cozy Mysteries are fun and very varied. Granted, I have yet to read any of her others, but reading a few synopses on her Website, I could tell what she writes, I definitely want to read. And yes, she is already a favorite author.
If you love Witchy Cozy Mysteries and if you love cats, the "Wonder Falls Mystery" Series is for you.
A new murder in the small town of Wonderfalls and this one reeks of dark magic so strongly even a non-witch can tell it isn't natural. In addition, Treacle hasn't been home in a while and Cath is getting worried. While it is definitely a witch who used magic to commit murder, Astrid knows that it is no one from Wonderfalls. Tension is high, especially while investigating Cath comes across someone who is using anti-witch protections. Is their secret out? Are the Greenstones in danger? And where is Treacle?
