There are many many MANY MANY MANY picture books about individuals of various species bucking the expectations inherent to their taxon - there are penguins that can't swim, sheep that want to rule the world, there's at least one sleepy rooster and I can think of two hippos who want to be ballerinas. But I like this one.

I like that Tina doesn't sulk or rail when her sisters try to harsh her adventurous vibe. I like that she just keeps on doing her Tina thing. She leaves them a note though, that's considerate. I like that too. And I flat-out love that when the sisters are like, 'OK TINA ENOUGH'S ENOUGH' and go to drag her silly butt back home, they leave the meadow for the first time and realize that the forest is beautiful. When they spot a pig wearing a parachute, they follow him up a tree and see that "the world beyond the fields was extraordinary." And when they spy Tina skydiving and she asks them to join her...

The textured watercolor art and deadpan expressions are perfect for this sweet, straightforward story. #bookaday

The Cow Who Climbed a Tree has just enough silliness to please even the pickiest picture book reader, while still imparting a beautiful message about daring to be different and following your dreams. We loved Tina the Cow and we think you will, too.

Kids were instantly excited when I pulled out this book because the title and cover are so fun. They voted to give this book 5 stars when we got to the end, and were very pleased with Tina, the little cow. The length is just right for younger children, but even older children in elementary school will enjoy this.

We are visiting my Gran Gran for the first time. Yesterday we had the whole Byrne family over so I got to meet all my family members. Today we had an easy day, Mum read me this book, which I got from my Gran Gran. I loved the simple but colourful pictures and how the story makes you feel like you can do anything. We’re going to the shops tomorrow so we might look for one of the other books by this author.

Adorable illustrations. Good lessons about believing, dreaming, hoping, and doing something about it, as well as acceptance and even sharing. Not too didactic to nauseate me. Will try in a storytime. You know me and cows....

1/25/17 Used as closer in C preschool theme. It went very well. They loved the dragon. One girl pointed it out each time it was on a page (even the last one!).

Very cute story of a cow who doesn't quite fit in with her sisters, goes on an adventure, and meets a magical friend in the forest. Beautiful water-spot illustrations and a great story time read.

Go Kee!

Tina is a curious and inquisitive cow. Her three bovine sisters, however, are not. For example, while her three bovine sisters contentedly munch away on grass and flowers, Tina carefully examines the vegetation with her magnifying glass and a field guide book.

Repeatedly, Tina’s three bovine sisters scoff at her imaginative ideas and dreams; they say disheartening things like “IMPOSSIBLE”, “RIDICULOUS”, and “NONSENSE”. Thankfully, plucky Tina does not take these comments to heart. Instead, she goes out exploring… and makes a new friend!!

Sadly, when Tina tells her three bovine sisters the exciting news, they do not believe her. However, the next day, when Tina is nowhere to be found, the three bovine sisters find a note. It says Tina went flying with her new friend in the woods. Exasperated, the three bovine sisters determinedly set out to find Tina and bring her back home.

When the three bovine sisters finally find Tina, they cannot believe their eyes. Tina IS “flying” with her new friend and several other animals from the forest!! Amazingly, instead of ridiculing her, the three bovine sisters join Tina and take to the skies, too!

I really liked The Cow Who Climbed a Tree by Gemma Merino! I thought it was a fun book with beautiful illustrations. The story highlights the importance of creativity and imagination. It also encouraged me to never give up on my dreams. Sometimes, others, like Tina’s three bovine sisters, might tell me my dreams and ideas are “IMPOSSIBLE”, “RIDICULOUS”, or “NONSENSE”. Sadly, at other times, even I might doubt my own dreams and ideas. However, this children’s picture book reminded me to never give up; and that, my friends, is a beautiful message to share!

Side Notes:

1. Firstly, I love that, before the story even begins, there is a picture of Tina eyeing up the moon with her telescope. Later, at the end of the book, another picture shows not only Tina but also her three bovine sisters blasting towards the moon in a spaceship/rocket. I think this is cute, and it may even be a reference to “the cow who jumped over the moon”!

2. Secondly, while reading and rereading the book, I noticed something interesting; there is a mouse. This mouse appears to mainly accompany Tina’s three bovine sisters, and I spotted him at least five times while reading the book. Also, I noticed a family of owls are in the book. I thought both facts were noteworthy (hence the note…).

3. Finally, I found Tina’s three bovine sisters’ penchant for fresh, juicy grass highly amusing. Throughout the book, there are little details extenuating their love of this vegetation. For example, I noticed several pictures of grass and flowers hanging on the walls of the three bovine sisters’ house. Also, when the three bovine sisters discover Tina’s note, other amusing details about their diet are revealed. The cupboard where Tina left her note also features jars of “pickled leaves”, a container of “grass cookies”, and even some “meadow mix”! I found these details generally amusing!!

Hello, everybody! Today, we read The Cow Who Climbed A Tree by Gemma Merino, a wonderfully sweet story about following your dreams.

Tina is a smart, curious cow who loves to learn, explore, and dream. Her sisters think her wonderings are foolish and pointless, and never miss an opportunity to tell her so. But Tina doesn’t let their negativity dampen her spirits, and instead of being content to sit out in the field all day, she decides to explore the surrounding forest. Little does she know that what she finds may turn her and her sisters’ lives upside down!

This book was fantastic! First, I loved that the intelligent and creative character with dreams of learning and building was a girl, and that her aspirations are presented as completely valid. And best of all, I loved that the sisters, who are initially cast in antagonistic roles, are not simply proven wrong but have their thinking changed by their own new experiences. It sends the message to children that people who are dismissive or rude may not necessarily be bad, they may just have a narrower point of view and could change their mind with a different perspective. The art is simple yet charming, and beautifully colorful, the story and length are perfect, and JJ really enjoyed this one. Definitely Baby Bookworm approved!

"Tina is a very curious cow who believes the sky is the limit and anything is possible. She's always dreaming up wonderful things to do but her sisters think her ideas are very silly.... When Tina skips breakfast for another crazy adventure, her sisters finally have enough of her silliness." [inside flap of hardcover]

The illustrations in this book definitely tell part of the story that the text leaves out. Readers will enjoy perusing the pictures before turning the page to see just what Tina is up to. The other forest animals (like the baby owl and the squirrel) add to the feeling of surprise at Tina's behavior.

In this story about trying out "the impossible," Tina's adventurous spirit wins her sisters over.

Tina the cow leaves the herd in search of higher possibilities. Eventually the other cows discover that anything is possible.
The moral of this story is “Yes, Why Not?” Told with a sparsity of words, the reader will come to discover that imaginations and a willingness to try will result in success. The illustrations are soft and somewhat blurry. The message conveyed is an old one but told with a new spin. This would be an optional purchase for any library. Recommended for first to third grade.

Follow an adorable cow named Tina who believes the sky is the limit, and because of that climbs a tree one day and meets a friendly dragon. When she returns home to tell her sisters of the dragon they do not believe her. Tina leaves the house again to climb the tree and see the dragon, and this time her sisters follow her to find a world full of new and wonderful things.

Tina was quite the adventurous little cow, but her sisters found her curiosity to be ridiculous. One day, as she took a stroll through the woods, she decided that she would climb a tree. She inched higher and higher, and when she reached the top, she was met by a dragon. This friendly dragon was quite different from the other dragons she had read about in books or seen in movies. She raced home, excited to share her story with her sisters, but they didn't believe her. After all, dragons weren't real. But, one day, the sisters awake and find a note that Tina left explaining how she was off flying with the dragon. The sisters travel into the woods searching for her, and when they looked up at the sky, they saw her gliding through the air. The other cows were shocked. How could this be? After that, the cows all sat together and wondered what other things were possible.

This story is so precious, and the message is wonderful! Tina was never discouraged, even when her sisters were unkind. She kept her head high and held onto the curiosity that had always driven her. The text was simple enough for young readers to understand but descriptive enough to keep it playful and engaging for an elementary audience. Each page is made brighter by the loose, silly illustrations that accompanied the text. With all of these elements combined, I think this would be a great book for the classroom or bedtime with your own children!
