I am sad to say that my run with these Scottish Highlanders have come to an end. This was the last book in this series, and it certainly didn't disappoint me! It was not as "wow" as the others were; but I still thoroughly enjoyed it, and I wish there was going to be more. I will hate to have to say goodbye to these strong loyal clans that I have severely fallen hard for.

My only reason for dropping a star in this fifth installment was the fact that there was a lot more war and fighting in this one. It wasn't its sole focus, it just was more prominent as Logan headed out to battle- for reasons I don't wish to reveal! Any friends who know me, knows that I enjoy a lot of sex in my reads. This series though, most definitely does not focus on the sexual side of thing, although there are passionate encounters....just not as many as I am use to. It doesn't diminish the story though, as I feel that Julianne MacLean is a master story-teller, and she is able to paint a very clear picture of all that is going on in her world.

A must read series, and for the time being, Book #4 was free, and Books 1-3 were in a bundle for $7.99! So I got this series for very cheap, and it was more than worth it. This is one of those series that I would even re-read again! I have had a very pleasant time with my Scottish Highlanders!

Good stories are like sculptures. They already exist in the stone, and are waiting for an artist who can see the sculpture inside and chip away the unnecessary parts to reveal the masterpiece underneath. So that marks the difference between a great story waiting to be written, and a mediocre story which was written to emulate a great story.

This book, was an attempt of a mediocre story to be great. I have the feeling that the writer was forcing the story to move forward. The story itself has no drive because it doesn't exist. It was created by the writer's sheer force of will. There, it's a highlander romance novel because the writer wrote it this way. What a shame because the characters are interesting. Their interactions however, very artificial. The entire story is artificial.

I don't think it's necessary to recount the story because the blurb does a good job of it. There is little else anyways. I am being nice with my 2 star rating.

There was nothing really memorable about this book. The characters were likeable enough, but the plot was a little boring. Mairi and Logan's relationship just seemed a little forced to me, and the pacing of the book seemed a little off.

A solid 4 star read

I liked this book much, much better than the previous book. Or to be more accurate - I liked Mairi better than Larena!

This book picked up where Logan and Darach parted ways in Return of the Highlander. Logan doesn't get far before he passes out from the pain of his broken arm. Mairi finds him and even though she is afraid - helps him and offers him shelter.

Logan and Mairi get to know each other and fall in love. Logan cares for Mairi, but is planning on leaving - he has plans and vengeance to deal out. Mairi has suffered at the hands of the English - but has become a pacifist - she tries very hard to get Logan to let go of the past and live in peace.

Together these two support and ultimately heal each other. But Logan needs to deal with his past before he can be at peace.

He and Mairi marry - but soon after that Logan leaves to retake his families castle. This is were the book kind of lost me - almost the entire second half of the book is about Logan and his "quest". There was even a point where he realized that he hadn't thought of Mairi all day - I really could have done without that observation - this is a romance novel after all.

I was happy with the ending and glad that they found middle ground - but it seemed rushed - thus 4 stars instead of 5

All in all this was a good series - the first three books were definitely better than the last two - but this book was good and I am glad I read it.

This is book 5 the the Highlander series.

When Mairi Campbell stumbles upon a wounded warrior of an enemy clan in the woods, she doesn't have it in her heart to leave him out in the elements. She gets him back to her home and nurses him back to health. Having sworn off men years ago, she is surprised to find herself wildly attracted to the man. But can she afford to get her heart broken again.

Logan MacDonald is on a secret mission. He didn't count on having it thwarted by his own brother. Having now recovered from his wounds he sets out to accomplish his goals. But what about the woman he has come to care for. If he follows his his previous path, what will happen to their love?

If you haven't read the previous book in the series, Return of the Highlander, you need to read it first. It is the story of Logan's brother and these two stories are quite tied together.

I didn't think much of Logan after reading the previous story but he did grow on me with this one. Mairi had been treated poorly in the past and he was able to get past her defenses by going slowly with her and taking the time to get to know her and her family. He proved he wasn't as much of an @$$ as I previously had thought he was.

This was a very enjoyable read!

Taken by the Highlander is a great story and a good ending to Julianne MacLean's Highlander series. In this book she combined the elements of a lost heir, a new love and a legendary sword to weave the story of Logan and Mari. What started out as a quest for vengeance turned into so much more. It also brought together feuding families, the Campbell's and the MacDonald's, to fight the harsh rule of an English Colonel and atrocities of an English Captain. Though this is supposed to be the last book in the Highlander series, I have fallen in love with many of the characters and would love to see more written about them.

I received an ARC of this book to review. While this is the fifth book in the series, you can read any of them as standalones. Though I would strongly suggest that you read book 4, Return of the Highlander, before reading book 5 because the main character Logan is also featured prominently in that book.

Pretending to be someone he was not, Logan Campbell and his brother fought, Logan broke his arm and fell off his horse while fleeing the camp. He struggled until he found his horse which found a barn and then collapsed. Mari Campbell heard the commotion and found Logan in the barn. A widow who was raped by a British soldier, Mari was very leering of helping the unconscious man but since he was unconscious, she couldn't let him die. As Logan recovered, he befriended Mari's young son and soon became a favorite of everyone, mother, grandmother and grandson. By the time came for Logan to leave, a neighbor of Mari's discovered who he really was. Then would Logan reunite with his brother and move on or would he stay with Mari and the home he knew he could have?

I'm sorry to see her Highlander series end. I have followed it since the beginning and each story was made you feel as if you were right there, living it with the characters.

So I really loved this series and devoured the other books but unfortunately this one fell a little flat for me.

The romance between Mairi and Logan was dry and passionless (which is strange because the other books had amazing passion). I felt like everything just happened in this book. One minute Mairi is scared of Logan and the next she loves him. One minute Logan is just a scout and the next he’s the butcher. It just felt a little unrealistic.

But I did enjoy the storyline and the first 3rd of the book was interesting. Like I said I loved the other books in this series so I knew the characters and could enjoy the interactions and where the story went. I just wish the romance was more believable.

Enjoyable romance

This was an enjoyable romance with a wonderful hero and heroine. It was an awesome ending to the Highlander series. I loved Logan and Mairi and felt their connection from their very first meeting. This book can be read as a stand alone but is best read in order as characters from the other books do make an appearance and Logan's brother Darach's story fills in the details of their disagreement that ended in the fight wihere Darach broke Logan's arm. This was a wonderful series with interesting characters and I highly recommend them all.

Can Mairi teach Logan to forgive or will he get revenge? Great story.

Definitely a great read. Enjoyed it a lot even though it was fast, a little bit predictable and ended somewhat abruptly. Overall a solid 3.75 stars for the story but bumped to 4 because of the passion and love evident between Logan and Mairi. Kinda hoping we'll see these characters again someday in the future.

Pretty much a short sequel to Return of the Highlander.

I loved the first 3 books of this series, but the fourth book Return of the Highlander was a disappointment. This short novel is pretty much like the second half of that novel, and a bit more enjoyable. Honestly, I think this series could have ended at book 3 without losing any of the story.

TAKEN BY THE HIGHLANDER: is a nice afternoon read. The story is steady, our hero is a good man and heroine is loving. Side stories could’ve been better developed as added interest.

I received this e-book as an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

When I finished reading the previous book in this Highlander series, "Return of the Highlander", I was left wondering what happened to Logan after he ran away from the camp without allowing his brother, Darach to tend to his arm. Therefore, I was glad that this book, "Taken by the Highlander", begins right after Logan flees from his brother.

Almost passing out from the pain of his broken arm, Logan is found by Mairi Campbell. Mairi binds his arm and thus begins Logan and Mairi's relationship.

The book is divided into two sections: "The Rescue", where we see Mairi and Logan's relationship gradually develop as they learn to trust and respect each other in a peaceable way; and "Atonement", where Logan feels the need to honor his father's memory by reclaiming Leathan Castle from English Colonel Gregory Chatham. It is in this second section where there is plenty of plotting and action as well as several surprise twists. Characters from the first three books in this series make appearances and become part of the planning process.

What will happen to Mairi and Logan's relationship as Logan leaves the peaceful life they have built as crofters and takes up his role as a warrior? The suspense builds and grows as the story approaches its ultimate resolution. The conclusion is most satisfactory and the Epilogue that follows is an entertaining way to end this novel, even though it is a bit sappy.

I highly recommend this book for all fans of Scottish romance novels. It is a very enjoyable read.

Free bookbub download. I'm not sure if I can pinpoint exactly what this book was missing, but I will try. On the face of it, it had the bones of an interesting and sexy Highlander romance - hot guy with emotional needs, strong sexy woman who can help him, a stormy political landscape to shape their lives. But it all fell flat in the telling. First, there was a LOT of telling. The characters were almost never at a loss for words with each other and the narrative as it flipped half heartedly between the two explained more than enough in their minds. It wasn't poorly written, just overwritten. Then the second half of the book is almost all from Logan's point of view, which makes his the dominant character, which is weird for a romance novel and bothered me maybe more than it should have. Then, the ending follows in the lackluster theme of the book by equivocating between the satisfaction of revenge that Logan believes in with the comfort of peace and love that Mairi espouses.
Also, the plot was very one-dimensional. It seems like there should have been layers, as there was certainly a lot going on, but (maybe because there were only two characters affected by the plot?), again, it was flat.

This was a great story! I really enjoyed reading it. Logan and Mairi were great characters that pulled me in from the very beginning! I didn't want to put the book down because I wanted to figure out what was going to happen with Logan and Mairi next. Logan has been injured in an argument with his brother and ends up on Mairi's land. She comes out to investigate and finds him. She is very wary because of what has happened to her in the past but she can't just let him stay out there and not offer help. Logan is a good person, though he wants revenge very badly. Mairi pulls out the best in Logan and lets him see a different part of himself that he didn't know existed. I really enjoyed the way that the story unfolded and the way that Logan and Mairi built their relationship. It does not happen super fast but instead as they get to know each other and the character of the other person. It has some action in it as well and I liked how some loose ends were tied up for the characters. I was very satisfied with the way things happened and ended.
This is a great story that I would recommend reading. This is not the first in the series but can be read as a stand alone, without any confusion for the reader.

As a longtime lover of Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander series and anything written by Hannah Howell and Maya Banks, this book has transported me back in time and has rejuvenated my love for the Highlands and historical romance. I admit I have been binge reading historical romance since I read this book. My only quandary is what took me so long to read Julianne MacLean’s books.

The tale begins with Logan MacDonald arrives injured to a cottage in enemy territory. He was discovered by Mairi Campbell and is strangely drawn to her. She feels the same but is weary for she had sworn off love for herself and only wants what’s best for her son Hamish. Mairi is tired of war, and Logan is heading headlong into war.

Julianne MacLean is a masterful story teller. I enjoyed this book so much I went back and purchased the first books in the series!! Don’t deny yourself the intrigue and skip out on this book!! It is a winner!!!

5 Stars and a curtsey!!! I tip my Nerd Girl hat to you, and I can’t want to read more!!!

I received and ebook ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I wanted to love this one, I really did. The other books in this series have been great but this one read like a novella rather than a full length book like it's predecessors and by that I mean the story just didn't reach as deep as I hoped it would given the potential of the plot & characters

Logan & Mairi are a very interesting couple with each of their back stories creating room for a great book and add that to Scotish & English politics of the time, Highlanders, stunning Scotland and a great cast of characters from earlier books and there is so much potential but this just seemed rush.

Overall, I would recommend this series of books. They are great entertainment and they have some great historical details to whet your appetite for all things Scottish.

I really enjoyed this book. I started it one day and by the second day I was done. I didn't want to put it down. Logan a fierce warrior is also headstrong and reckless. This behavior finds him incapacitated after a fight with his brother. Mairi finds Logan on his back barely able to move. Mairi guards her family like she guards her heart. She has reason to distrust strangers. But she finds that she is developing feelings for Logan although she fights it. Logan, fierce warrior finds that he can't fight his feelings for Mairi.
Both Logan and Mairi have secrets and they find themselves needing each other . I laughed, I cheered, I supported and yes..even got teary eyed. Very well written....left me wanting more of these Highlanders. Looking forward to future books. I recommend Taken by the Highlander, you'll like it.

This was an easy, quick read. I'm sad to see it's actually the last in the series, but it was offered free through Book Bub so I had to try it.
I really enjoyed the realist aspect of the book, especially regarding Mairi and her son, as that's something I've not actually seen in any kind of historical romance fiction book yet. I appreciate also the work and effort you can see her put in to regaining the ability to trust people again, and how Logan accepts that she's in need of a softer, slower approach, and that he works with her without pushing her in to anything. Mairi's mother was an awesome character as well, and I loved how strong she was. The storyline was simple and not complicated, but complex enough to hold my attention and keep me reading. Overall a very lovely read, and I'll soon be seeking out its companions.
