I couldn't continue with it. For some general reasons and a few specific ones.
The general. Teens saving the world from a greed driven corporation (called aptly "The Corporation"), who answers to no government and wants nothing more than world domination. The answer is in the hidden genes of a feisty farm girl who is kidnapped by The Evil Corporation who want to get them there genes. And of course, there are two smoking hot One Direction style of brothers who are out to save her and the world if only she will stop fighting and let them help her out Because girls need mens obviously and when trapped on a deserted island in an evil lab where you're knocked out with drugs a lot, you can't be picky about the only person who actually says "I am here to help you."
I can't suspend my belief this much. That every adult in the world is clueless and incompetent. Only the scooby-do gang-o-kids can save the world. *insert eyeroll for derivative work from a lot of YA books I've stumbled on recently*.
But if I could suspend this absurd notion, the specifics of the animals mentioned in this story would not allow me to continue to read. I am going to spoil here so stop reading if you are reading or plan to read.
The first scene is our plucky heroine shooting a trusting cow because it was ill cared for after a broken leg. #gutpunch #wetcoweyes
She later mentions shooting a coyote who got caught in a barbed fence and was panicking. Well. Duh. I could get on a soapbox here about taking up animal habitats.to raise meat for mass consumption and how WRONG I feel it is to think of these animals as a nuisance when they have just as much right to roam the land as those cows do. Well, she goes all Ted Nugent on that coyote and she shoots it dead. She did not tranquilize it with darts and then move it away, noooo. It's dead. For doing what it should do as a wild animal, it deserved to get tangled in her fence and shot. Good thing I cant find my soapbox.
Later, she has to go on the run from The Corporation and abandons her farm. It was actually mentioned that the animals were left and she hoped someone would eventually find the cows, goats, chickens, and I think a pet dog or cat. She can't even call and leave a message with ANYONE about it. Or she doesn't anyway. I even got upset when the author decides to tell me that her brother's prized toad dies.
Now..I get that animals don't make it sometimes. But this was only 19% into the book. Maybe someone comes and saves the farm. I don't know but I am not willing to give it a shot. It was too many dead animals that it became a "thing". Not anything I want in my head.
Off for a refund for this book. Not my style. AT ALL.

A quick and easy read that strangely felt like I'd already read it, when I know I haven't. When Sage and her brother are kidnapped on their way to a science fair, Sage's entire world is turned upside down. Everything she thought she knew about her past turns out to be a giant web of lies and deceit as she discovers her father was instrumental in designing a genetic code to modify humans, giving them superhuman powers. But her father disappeared with the code and his old partner is willing to go to any length to get it back.
Some aspects of this were really interesting, particularly the serum used to mutate some of the subjects. Unfortunately, much of the actual science of the book is glossed over in favour of the love triangle and I have to say it, I really dislike love triangles. They are over used and detract from the actual narrative in most books where they appear. It certainly does here. I really couldn't care less which of the two brothers Sage ends up falling in love with and could have done with far less time spent on the dilemma.
I also felt that the use of the three perspectives didn't really bring anything to the book. There ended up being a lot of repetition as the same events are re-hashed from different view points. And by the time the final twist was revealed, I had seen it coming for at least a hundred pages. I am interested to see where it goes next though, and I hope that the next book moves away from the love triangle angle and focuses more on the corporation plans and genetic complexity of the mod code itself.

Good sci fi read, but its set in the not too distant future--so almost feels dystopian.
Its a love triangle story, but not a weird angsty one that sometimes happens in YA. Its really more about family and friends and loyalty. Love is after that, at least in this story. The story starts on a farm and then on the way to a science fair, Finn and Sage are kidnapped and their mother is killed. Beckett, one of the brothers in the love triangle finds them gone and finds his way to them. His father is the culprit. I won't tell any more of the story... its got lots of action. Nuff said.

Modification
Genetic modification is not a new or even unique concept. This novel proposes one possible outcome that happen if human genetic modification became a tool for corporate profit. It is not an unusual subject for science fiction novels and there are no surprising outcomes. I was easily able to skim through most of the pages and still know what would happen to the characters.

I can't tell you whether the book is clean or not. I did not make it past the second chapter. My first thought was, "Oh no, another love triangle." I tried to push past it until Jack's chapter and I just rolled my eyes and skipped to the end to learn if it was worth slogging through. That sealed its fate as a waste of my time. Who ever said skipping to the end of a book ruined it? They obviously wasted a great deal of time reading useless books.

Definitely a YA novel, however as someone a bit older, I did find I still enjoyed this book, regardless of being out of the book's intended readership! There were some good ideas in this book, and some original ones, which is always good. I am having a think about whether to continue the series - quite tempted, although a slight irritation as it does end on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I think one would have to commit to the whole series.

I rarely pay for a book - why should I, when there are so many good ones available for free? Once in a while, though, some genius author writes a series and makes me love the first book so much that I can't avoid paying for the second. **sigh** This is one of those books.

Wow...That was great! Talk about a page turner! I only hope Ms. Tankersley can keep up the same motivation in the next 2 books. This could end up being a same old same old situation I might get bored with, hope not.

it was a quick read. I didn't love it. but it was good. typical love triangle of two hot boys and a girl who has hidden unknown powers. I didn't like rehashing the same scene over with three different viewpoints it got alittle annoying.

Another book that is a series. 4 books for it so far.
I loved the book, and the concept, I just hate that the finish of book 1 almost makes you have to read book 2 to find out what happens.

Just not good. I kept thinking it would get better because the idea was good but the execution just didn't hold up.

Pulled me in right away. Really strong characters and loved show they interacted. Things slowed down a lot about halfway through the book. Picked up speed toward the end. Overall, not bad.

I loved this series! The first book had it all: corruption, suspense, action, a mad scientist, a blood-thirsty corporation, a heroine with a backbone and a brain, and two men who love her.

So pleasantly surprised by this book and waiting with anticipation for the next book in the series to arrive on my doorstep to find out what happens next! A gripping moment early in the book grabs your attention and you cannot help but plow forward to puzzle out what has just happened and why. A seemingly plain non-descript young girl transforms into a principled, complex and devoted heroine grappling with who to trust after her life is up-ended and also with the developing feelings she has for her loyal, handsome childhood friend/neighbor and the enigmatic boy that is driven into her life by circumstance. You'll find plenty of action, plot twists, a love triangle, villainous characters, a wee bit of science fiction and heros/heroines you can't help but cheer for. Fans of the Twilight and The Hunger Games series will enjoy this book! Although there are parts of the story or themes that will feel reminiscent of the prior series (protective sibling, sacrificial parent, Team Beckett or Team Jack?), the story and characters are unique enough to invest in. Ms. Tankersley succeeded in converting a skeptic into a fan. Well done Heidi!

now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.
The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.
i would highly recommend this author and this book.

Action-packed!
I had so much fun reading this YA first-in-a-series book! The scenario was intriguing, the plot had enough teenage angst to keep it interesting and the science behind it seemed well researched. It highlighted human nature at its best and worst, making the reality factor high. Can't wait for book 2! Good first novel.

Great adventure sci-fi coming-of-age thriller stretching from Kansas roots to genetic super-traits. Can't wait to see where the next install takes the characters! what genetic modifications only hinted at will be revealed; and what further connections develop between the girl and the brothers. (Will she choose one? Will the choice be made for her?)

Great book. Not sure who I want her to end up with. Loved all the characters. Hope Finn ends up okay. Not sure I believe people are so evil but liked the concept.

This is an excellent, gripping, nail biting story line. I loved it. I like how not everything goes the way you think it will. I am a big fan of happy endings and even though this book isn't the end and it doesn't end happily yet (not so spoiler alert) you can't help but continue to wish for that happily ever after. I can't wait to read the next one.

Pretty good, takes you right into the story so we know as much as Sage knows (which is nothing) and then all the crazy drama follows. Would have liked to see a bit more character development with Jack, Beckett is sorta given since there is untold history between Sage and him, but Jack just pops out of nowhere and all of a sudden there is a weird love triangle going on. There is a lot of talk of cute animal deaths in the first 10%. Interesting story on genetic engineering. Written for a younger audience.
