Chapter 98-102

I was not expecting too much since the arc turned out differently than what I wanted. But once again, YT proved me wrong. Excellent battles, they were all so exciting. Sebastian and Ciel, as sadistic as ever. So many good moments, like when Sebastian dodged all the bullets (hello Neo!). Or Sebastian in all his demon-like forms. And although the extra chapter (from Book of Circus, which I just must watch, like, yesterday) was not so funny as the last one, I laughed when Sebastian teases Ciel.

Can I say -again, I guess- that I love the Phantomhive servants? I was with my mouth open when all four of them had their shining moments. I am so satisfied that they are now getting their own cover (next one is Mei-Rin). They are awesome.

my new obsession: Kuroshitsuji The Musical

There were tiny moments where you can just tell Sebastian cares for Ciel. Like in that extra chapter, where Ciel interrupts him. Or when Sebastian rubs Ciel's face.

Next arc looks SOOOO promising. Shinigamis...

Wow! This author always impresses me with her exceptional artwork, and the risks she takes with her characters. She does not disappoint in this volume. This volume is not as dark as the last volumes were; rather this volume is filled with lots of action.

Ciel's servants, in particular, Baldo, Snake, and Finny are brought forward in this volume for much of the action. Sebastian is drawn in his demonic glory in many scenes of this volume, as he follows Ciel's orders. (Leaving this open, as to not provide any spoilers.)

Splashes of humor are interspersed, helping to relieve some of the high-tension scenes, and Toboso does so with perfect timing.

Read this ages ago, been waiting forever for the chapters to be placed into a volume.

P.S thank god the witch arc is over, it was the most boring arc I've read from the series.

Again there was so much going on in this volume. I wonder if all the military advancements showcased by the Germans here is historically accurate. We also met some German grim Reapers who shed some light on how Grime reapers came to be, which means I have some theories so SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

1. Grell:

- I think Grell killed himself because of his gender dysphoria. Since he was born a male and believed to be a female, he might have had such a downward spiral in depression he killed himself. A very clever move by Tobso and if true, a concept ahead of its time!

2. Undertaker
- I think Undertaker is Cedric Phantomhive (Ciel's Grandfather) because we were shown early on Claudia's hair locket. That was done on purpose, and we were also shown in this volume her husband was Cedric, but the date of his death was blocked from view. In vol. 22 we see he was crying over Vincent's photo and how he can't bring him back.

So my theory is when Claudia died Undertaker/Cedric killed himself from grief over the loss of his wife. Maybe the reason why he wants to be paid with laughter is that Claudia knew how to make him laugh and happy, so when she died it was like his laughter died. Then he takes a special interested in Vincent, well of course he would, that is his son! And I think the reason why Undertaker/Cedric is so obsessed with brining back the dead is because he wants to bring ultimately his wife (Claudia) back to life. That's my theory! Let me know what you think!

I'm rather surprised by the high reviews on this one. I am a diehard Kuroshitsuji fan but I found this volume to be disappointing, and felt that it even jumped the shark. I sincerely hope that this isn't the mark of the series' downfall, but I cannot help but fear it.

SPOILERS

In this volume you get to see Sebastian take down a tank from the 1940s. Even in a series full of anachronisms, this one is just too much. I mean, yeah, he's Sebastian so he does it elegantly and with that special touch of class, so it is fun reading, but at the same time it is just too absurd.

Of course if you love Kuroshitsuji you must read this anyway, and there are some interesting points to the story, particularly if you're into the Shinigami (as I am). But Sebastian destroying a Panzer was just ridiculous and out of place and it kind of spoiled the whole thing.

Then again, that's just me. "Sebastian destroying a tank" might be exactly what you were hoping to hear!

Welp, not gonna lie, that was an absolute skim read. Reading action in manga, especially in black and white is just not my thing. My eyes immediately glaze over and it’s just hard for me to really get into the action even though I see it on the page. The black and white ends up just blurring together for me.... and in general the action in black butler feels a bit one sided given the fact that Sebastian can fight anything and everything.... so there isn’t much suspense most of the time so it’s easy to really flip through. Didn’t care too much about Wolf and how this one ended sooooo bit a bummer end to my brief binge read of this series for the time being..... ah well....

Screaming, crying, throwing up

Also not to speculate on author's sexualities, but can we talk about how Yana Toboso is strong arming her team into drawing pretty ladies in military uniforms as personal fan service? That doesn't sound very str8 to me. 👀

This is the 21st volume in the Black Butler series. I really loved it and thought this was one of the best volumes in this series yet. You get to see a very dark side to Sebastian (he destroys a Panzer by hand which was absolutely awesome). You also get to see a ton of awesomeness from the Phantomhive staff, especially Finnian.

I continued to really enjoy the Emerald Witch and hope she continues to be in the series. I also enjoyed all the female military staff in this story and how they kicked butt as well.

This was one of the most violent and action-packed Black Butler’s in quite some time and I absolutely loved it. I hope future volumes are just as action-packed and edgy.

The illustration remains top notch and I really enjoyed that as well.

Overall one of the best volumes in the Black Butler series; I loved all the action and mayhem in this one. I really look forward to seeing what future volumes bring. I would recommend this manga to those who enjoy paranormal mystery type stories.

~4.5/5

The big showdown! Ciel and his gang agree to help Lady Sullivan get away. The village isn’t so keen on letting her get away, though, and so there’s fighting. Thankfully, this means we get to see the servants in action. I just love seeing them get serious and dirty. We even get a little extra about Finn and his training at the mansion. I just love him, honestly.

We also get Ciel in a dress. And Sebastian getting violent and pulling out his devilish tricks of destruction. A friend of Ciel’s father shows up, too, to help him out. I’m unsure what this is leading to, but it did give us a memory of when Ciel was little and his father was around. I definitely want more of that.

The ending, though, is what really hurts. It makes me sad for Lady Sullivan, and it’s rather mean after everything she’s been through.

I can’t wait for the next one, to see what happens next.

Yana Toboso, tráeme a mi shinigami favorito.

Thank you Toboso-san for another blessing aka chapter 99.5 .....Vincent Phantomhive is my aesthetic

*Potential Spoilers*

German Shinigami are interesting, the first female shinigami we get to see ( I love you Grell ofc but I think you understand why I'm saying that don't kill me) . And again, Claudia Phantomhive...want to learn about her asap!
Wolf cared about the green witch, not surprised to be honest that she tried to save her in the end.

Sascha y Rudgar, Shinigamis alemanes…

And we’re back at it with Black Butler! I WILL read all I can get my hands on here at the libraries in this city!

What I really really enjoyed with this was the servents of Ciel got a bit more spotlight!

Especially Snake. I LOVE SNAKE!!!! He’s a bit more of a silent introvert, but he sure cares for Ciel and the ragtag family they’ve ended up! He gets to show that here. I love how he hears the same way snakes does. Through vibrations through his skin and feet…. SO COOL!

Baldo shows his badass side as well as Mey-rin. Loved Finnian as well! And we found out more about them! AWESOME!

They all work so well together to help the Emerald Witch, Sieglinde Sullivan. It was nice to see a continuation to the fucked up cliffhanger that I stopped at in the last book.

I feel so so so sorry for Sieglinde. Her whole life has been a total lie. Made worse by making her a cripple by binding her feet… Yeah, like the same way as old chinese footbinding.

Horrible, horrible. Poor girl. Not sure if her future is HUGELY better with Ciel and crew, but it sure can’t be worse.

Ciel also runs into an old friend of his fathers, who looks suspiciously like a certain mustache adorned German gentleman from the 1930’s… Only fatter! What’s going on with that guy, I wonder…

A lot of action in this book since it just deals with how they escape from Wolfsschlucht, who's been held as a captive pretty much her whole life.

Also, Sebastian was told to let loose a few times by Ciel, and he CLEARLY enjoyed using as much violence as a demon/devil would… His enemies had NO chance! Neither did that tank he downright destroyed at one point…

Anyway, gonna be interesting to see how this develops with Sieglinde! I do like her quite a bit!

The truth behind the legend of the Emerald Witch has been exposed. Now Ciel, Sullivan, and all of Ciel’s servants have to escape from Wolfsschluct with their lives. What’s more, the ‘villagers’ aren’t willing to let Sullivan herself get away, even if it means killing the girl they once devoted their lives to. Fortunately, Ciel has an old ally of his father’s on his side. Plus one of Sullivan’s former retainers does care more about her than the part she played as Emerald Witch. Besides Ciel’s servants are quite talented when it comes to fighting for their lives. It still takes all of their skill, along with all of Ciel’s cunning to deal with the surprises lying in wait.

Ciel grew a bit as a character is showing some of his own abilities, wits, and charisma (along with a willingness to cress dress) while in a crisis. Both Finny and Sullivan got an extra layer of depth as more of their backgrounds and motivations were revealed. All of the servants got a part to play in the chase and action sequences. Everyone showed what they were capable of, including Diedrich, Vincent Phantomhive’s old schoolmate, who showed impeccable timing in appearing at a crucial moment. Readers also got to meet a couple of German Grim Reapers, whom dropped intriguing hints about the Phantomhive family. Not that any of this was about to outshine Sebastian, who dashed about with his usual demonic flair, taking on the latest of German weaponry while carrying his little master in his arms. For all of this, I give this book four stars.
