Our Pasts II successfully depicts the medieval history of India. Continuing from its first part, Our Pasts I for class 6th, it explains The Delhi Sultanate, The Mughal Empires and the advent of East India Company and then political scenario.
A well written book. One should read these books to know the history of India through an Indian perspective.
After the brilliant first part on India's past for Class 6 history, that takes the students from pre-historic period to early civilization and empires in India, this part, as part of class 7 history course, picks up where the first part ends, and shades lights on India's middle ages, taking the students from Early civilizations through Islamic conquest and Mughal empires till its decline and the rise of small kingdoms in India, just before British colonization. Sadly, the book is a let down from the usual NCERT books that I am a big fan of. This has the same problem I had with my history book 30 years ago. Too much new information thrown together in a small space for anyone to consume, internalize and relate, which leads to finally memorizing without contextualizing before the exam. Despite having similar format as the predecessor book, I feel what lacks in this book is a good storytelling.
The chapters in this book are - 1: Tracing Changes Through A Thousand Years 2: New Kings And Kingdoms 3: The Delhi Sultans 4: The Mughal Empire 5: Rulers And Buildings 6: Towns, Traders And Crafts persons 7: Tribes, Nomads And Settled Communities 8: Devotional Paths To The Divine 9: The Making Of Regional Cultures 10: Eighteenth-Century Political Formations
This book series was one of the few history books in the NCERT curriculum that was worthy of being taught. The degradation of quality and deception in texts for books from 8th grade onwards is a scandal.
