क्या होता है जब बिहार में किसी भी थोड़े सम्पन्न परिवार में बच्चे का जन्म होता है? उसके जन्मते ही उसके बिहार छूटने का दिन क्यों तय हो जाता है? जब सभी जानते हैं कि मूंछ की रेख उभरने से पहले उसको अनजान लोगों के बीच चले जाना है— तब भी क्यों उसको गोलू-मोलू-दुलारा बना के पाला जाता है? वही ‘दुलारा बच्चा’ जब आख़िरकार ट्रेन में बिठाकर बिहार से बाहर भेज दिया जाता है तब क्या होता है उसके साथ? सांस्कृतिक धक्के अलग लगते हैं, भावनात्मक अभाव का झटका अलग— इनसे कैसे उबरता है वह? क्यों तब उसको किसी दोस्त में माशूका और माशूका में सारे जहाँ का सुकून मिलने लगता है? ‘एनआरबी’ के नायक राहुल की इतनी भर कहानी है— एक तरफ यूपीएससी और दूसरी तरफ शालू. यूपीएससी उसकी जिंदगी है, शालू जैसे जिंदगी की ‘जिंदगी’. एक का छूटना साफ़ दिखने लगता है और दूसरी किनारे पर टंगी पतंग की तरह है. लेकिन इसमें हो जाता है लोचा। क्या? सवाल बहुतेरे हैं. जवाब आपके पास भी हो सकते हैं. लेकिन ‘नॉन रेजिडेंट बिहारी’ पढ़ कर देखिए— हर पन्ना आपको गुदगुदाते, चिकोटी काटते, याद-गली में भटकाते ले जाएगा एक दिलचस्प अनुभव की ओर।

2.5/5 "Beta, Tumse na ho paayega"
The book starts with d author's narration of how this book came to be written and then was published after 2 yrs. Wonder why didnt his boss, his colleagues or d publisher tell him d above words ?
The story is of a Bihari IAS aspirant - Rahul who goes to Delhi to prepare for his UPSC exams with other students from Bihar. I am a fan of college stories and read d delicious "Banaras Talkies" set in BHU (Varanasi) recently.
But, while Banaras Talkies was full of d local Banarasi language and great conversations and set-pieces this one was a disappointment. It had neither d flavour of Bihari language, no Wow moments, not even a Wow dialogue! And it was very repetitive in its storyline too to top it up. Avoid picking up !

हिन्दी के जन्म के समय के उपन्यास और इस उपन्यास में जैसे मानवीय सभ्यता और बंदर जैसा अन्तर है. हिन्दी की ऐसी दुर्दशा देखकर दुख होता है. कहानियों के नाम पर उछृंखलता है बस. हिन्दी की हीनता को देखकर ऐसा लगता है जैसे कोई होनहार बच्चा बड़ा होकर निकृष्टता को प्राप्त हो गया. इस उपन्यास की ना केवल कहानी बल्कि शैली और भाषा भी दोयम दर्जे की है. गली की हुल्लड़बाजी को साहित्य नहीं कहा जा सकता. इतने प्रगतिवादी परिवेश में आज भी हिंदी के नवोदित लेखक दारू, छात्रावास, पहले प्यार के मोहपाश से छूट नहीं पा रहे हैं.

सब लाल बत्ती का चक्कर है बाबू भैया।

अंत भला तो सब भला, पर यह सच है कि तुम किसी के काम न आओ तो कोई भी नहीं पूछेगा तुम्हे। घरवालो पे भी बोझ ही बन जाओगे। लड़की तो फिर भी दूसरे परिवार से है।

'Non Resident Bihari' captures the essence of every such struggling IAS aspirant who is parceled from Bihar to Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar every year, sealed in aspirations, dreams and expectations - all of which are owned more by those who love him and less by the person himself. It is in this process of trying to get a 'lalbatti wali gaadi' that Rahul, the protagonist, undergoes a series of emotional ups and downs but the most serious nadir of all his downs is when the love of his life, Shalu, is set to leave him forever. Rahul faces a dilemma to choose between the his dream UPSC or to save his love from leaving. It is a plot that on a wider level, resonates with the myriad dilemmas and the consequent psychological pain we go through in our lives at some point of time.

The story line is equally predictable and unpredictable at places. The plot resembles a mix of the stories of the Bollywood flicks of the fifties. But the reality of many in present-day Bihar is tailored that way. The author has tried to put forth the reality as he has experienced. It is for the same reason that I can let go of the discomfort I had while trying to adapt to the language at places. Somewhere I had wished to read the authentic Bhojpuri and Magadhi which an NBR is adept to using when among his friends and closed ones.

That also brings me to say that NBR is a fluent book- in that its characters talk and when they do, it is almost as if the reader is in one among them too. Topics of Conversations are the most genuine part of this book.

Though the love story is cute and pretty, I would have loved to see more of Rahul's professional journey through this. NBR is one of the many stories that begin in Bihar but end up in other parts of the country. The end leaves you wanting to read more but that is how, I believe, 'real' stories go-open ended!

For me, it is a book that can surely be read once!

शीर्षक पे पूरी तरह से खरी उतरती है, और ये बात बिलकुल सच है की UP-BIHAR के ज्यादातर हिस्सों में लडको के पैदा होते ही, उनके बहार जाने और किसी न किसी competion की तयारी में लग जाते है, UPSC का craze किस कदर है यहाँ के लोगो में इस बात को भी किताब के शुरू में ही बड़ी खूबसूरती से बताया गया है | ऐसे , की डिलेवरी होनी है और बच्चा बाहर नहीं आ रहा अस्पताल के सरे डॉक्टर्स परेशां है इत्मे में एक कम्पाउण्डर आ के बोलता है की आज upsc के फॉर्म भरने की लास्ट डेट है , ये सुनते ही माँ का दर्द पूरी तरह से ख़तम हो जाता है और बच्चा बहार आ जाता है | किताब की शुरुआत काफी अच्छी कहानी भी तेज़ी से आगे बढती है | लेकिन जहा तक निजी जिंदगी का सवाल है, हर किसी के जिंदगी में लड़की नहीं होती और UPSC की तयारी करने वालो की जिंदगी में बिलकुल नहीं, ये बात मई इसलिए बोल रहा की शालू का chapter काफी ज्यादा खीच गया |उपस्क की तयारी करने वालो पे कई किताबें लिखी गयी है, और जहाँ realism की झलक मिलती है वही मज़ा आता, realism के मामले में नीलोत्पल मिर्नाल की डार्क हार्स बहुत पसंद आई वो मई इससे पहले पढ़ चुका तो उसी तरह की उम्मीद इससे भी कर रहा था | किताब आप पढ़ सकते है अच्छी है लेकिन UPSC की तैयारी करने वालो की जिंदगी इससे बिलकुल मत जोड़िएगा, लाइन्स भी अछि है |

घिसीपिटी कहानी

अभी पहला अध्याय आरंभ हुआ ही है और लेखक महोदय ज्ञान योग की शिक्षा देने लगे कि ईश्वर नहीं है। फिर संघ आयोग की परीक्षा में जब मित्र ने ईश्वर से प्रार्थना करने की बात की तो राम और शिव का ये कहकर परिहास किया जा रहा है कि क्या उन्होंने संघ आयोग की परीक्षा पास की है जो तुम्हे पास करवा देंगे।

एक तरफ ईश्वर का अस्तित्व मानना भी नहीं है और दूसरी और ईश्वर का उपहास भी उड़ाना है। स्वयं को प्रगतिवादी समझने वाले लेखक अधिकतर प्रेम, सेक्स और उसके इर्द गिर्द घूमने वाली कथा लिखते पाए जाते हैं। इनसे कोई अच्छा साहित्य लिखा नहीं जाता।

A kind of cheap comedy and irrelevant background of UPSC aspirants. The love story is nothing but an impractically crazy decision making, with the protagonist being highly immature and instinctive. I did not like it. Dark horse is a much better read.

नॉन रेजिडेंट बिहारी एक अच्छी पुस्तक है| यूपीएससी के ख्वाबों और माता पिता की उम्मीदों के बीच लेखक की शालू के साथ की प्रेम कहानी भी है| अगर आपने कभी प्रेम नही किया है तब भी पढ़ सकते है, उम्मीद है कि प्रेम करना सीख जाएंगे| कभी सिनेमा छोड़ कर किताब भी पढ़ लीजिये| कटिहार ज़िले का रहने वाला है लेखक| हमेशा किताब पढ़ने के लिए मत खरीदिये, कभी कभी लेखकों का हौंसला अफ़ज़ाई के लिए भी खरीद लीजिए|

एक बिहारी लड़के के उसकी प्रेमिका से और लालबत्ती की आकांक्षा से प्यार की कहानी जो मध्य में धर्म का मज़ाक उड़ाने और सेकुलरिज्म का पाठ पढ़ाने के चक्कर में कमजोर पड़ जाती है। कहानी का अंत भी जबरदस्ती किया हुआ प्रतीत होता है जो कि समझ से परे है। कुल मिलाकर संतोषजनक नहीं कहा जा सकता।
