Can a man and woman be JUST friends?

Shane Carlisle and Leah Kessel think so. They’ve been the best of friends for years—and quite content being just that; it’s their friends who don’t believe it. None of them can understand how two gorgeous, non-committed adults have never thought about crossing that line. Until a night of celebration, too much tequila and new found curiosity makes it impossible for Shane and Leah not to think about it. So together, they cross it—promising themselves and each other that nothing will change and that yes, a man and woman can STILL remain just friends.

That is, until everything around them begins to spiral out of control.

Plans they had once formed, vanish. Promises they once made, are broken. And their once easy and effortless friendship turns into…the complete opposite. Coming face to face with the consequences of their actions, Shane and Leah are once again challenged by the same question.

Can a man and woman be just FRIENDS?

Not when everything unexpected is thrown their way.

Review at Of Pens and Pages

...Falling in love is a great thing, but falling in love with your best friend? That's everything.”

Six years. Shane Carlisle and Leah Kessel have been the best of friends for the last six years, but one drunken night opened their eyes to everything unexpected—feelings, fears, desires, surprises.

Told in alternating POVs, Everything Unexpected shows us how two people who have basically been in a relationship—sans the labels and sex—for the last six years find out what it's like to be more than just best friends.

I love best friends-to-lovers stories! It was sweet to see how much Shane and Leah knew each other and cared about each other. Obviously, from the very first meeting there's attraction and the feeling on instant connection, but the grew into so much more.

I've heard a lot about Caroline Nolan's first novel, This Is Love, but I haven't read it yet. So, I went into this book without knowing what to expect.

The possibility of a relationship and something even more special wasn't an easy journey for the two. They both had a lot of growing up to do. A lot of sacrifices to be made. They both thought they've already given up enough, but it took them a while to realize that no, they really haven’t.

It was hard for the both of them to do it career-wise, since they both have their sights set on their goals. Shane chose photography over his father's marketing firm, and Leah wanted to become a successful lawyer.

It became a solid four when reformed!Shane happened. I was gushing so much it was embarrassing! What can I say? I'm a sucker for super sweet guys. I feel butterflies in my stomach just thinking about it.

I love how vivid the feelings felt. When they were happy? I laughed with them. Hurt? Pierced straight to the heart. Angry? Give me a throw pillow and I'd give it a few punches. And the sweet moments? I may have looked like an idiot for smiling too much.

I also love the relationship between Shane and his parents, Abel and Charlotte. It reminded me of my relationship with my parents. Like my parents, Shane's have been together for a really long time but are still so sickeningly (read endearingly) in love with each other. They're an amazing support pair, not only for Shane, but also for Leah. I loved reading the conversations between father and son and the advices Abel gave Shane.

You want to be a man at night, you be a man in the morning.”

Why not 5 stars then?I wanted to see more establishment for the friendship between Shane and Leah. The book started with the first meeting, but then it skips the six years of friendship, giving only a few glimpses of what their friendship looked like. I would have wanted to see more of what it was like before the night that changed everything.

Everything Unexpected is a sweet best friends-to-lovers story, with its fair share of heat and angst. I enjoyed watching them find their way and figure out what is most important to them. I laughed, smiled, teared up a little, and straight out gushed!

Ms. Nolan, you have found a new fan in me. I look forward to reading more of your books.

Too much has happened. The biggest being I fell in love with my best friend. There's no going back after that.”

THREE LOVE ALWAYS STARS.

"I’ll take care of you. Of us. Always."

description

I was pleased as punch when this 'new to me' author approached to ask if I would read and review her up and coming novel. Friends to lovers theme, check. Fabulous cover, check. Great sounding blurb, double check. Everything pointed towards time well spent with this book and even though it didn't fully bowl me over I'll be sure to hook up with this authors words again in the near future.

What's it all about?
Long term college friends Leah and Shane have had a special connection since the moment they clapped eyes on each other and even though they have always had a mutual attraction they've never acted upon it ... Until now. Follow the story of this friends to lovers journey with a twist that makes it impossible for this duo to continue ignoring what's right in front of them.

What did I love?
This was my first time reading this authors work and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed her style. The writing was relatable and had a reality to it that made me comfortable with the characters. Caroline Nolan writes with a conviction of her own story telling which in turn made me relax into the chapters. There wasn't a moment to be less than entertained, Nolan kept her characters up to all sorts of romantic mischief and I fully appreciated the journey that these characters were taken on. Most of all I'm excited to read more from this author because although this story didn't match my tastes completely this author has got me hooked on her writing ability.

Why not five?
As much as I enjoyed reading this novel there were a few kinks in the way for me to give the full five stars. I needed a little more build up at the beginning of the story to understand this couples connection and friendship. The characters were telling me about their history but I didn't always understand their relationship. I also would have like the story to have slowed down a little, there were moments in the story that the flow seemed a little off kilter and the timeline seemed to skip in parts. Sadly my biggest issue was the heroine, she started off as a sassy, go getter but unfortunately for my tastes she turned out to be a little on the annoying side which shaved off some of my enjoyment. Overall I did enjoy what Caroline Nolan created with this book, and I'm more than happy that I got the opportunity to read and review.

Final thoughts ...
For those that love a friends to lovers romance theme I would whole heartedly recommend this newest release by Caroline Nolan. And as for moi i'm more than happy to raise a glass (or my kindle) and toast to discovering new authors to fall in love with. Enjoy ... Kisses.

Title: Everything Unexpected
Series: Standalone
Author: Caroline Nolan
Release date: September 20, 2016
Cliffhanger: No
HEA

Everything Unexpected is a book that I have been highly anticipating ever since I read Caroline Nolan's debut book This Is Love. I immediately fell for her unique and beautifully written story. She has the ability to make you feel her words so much, to experience what her characters feel right along with them. However, as much as I wanted to love this book, I found myself having some issues that really bothered me this time around.

I'm a big reader of friends to lovers romances. What I love most about them is the anticipation. The angst of seeing those two characters hold in their feelings until you could just burst with impatience to see them let go of the safety of their friendship. That one, desperate moment when they surrender to each other is so heart-poundingly good. Unfortunately, what I felt here was disconnected. For me to get that rush over seeing them making that choice, I have to feel something for them first.

I don't think that there was enough time devoted to helping us root for these two as a couple. It wasn't a situation of one or both having secret desires and not admitting it. There was a vague attraction, but nothing more. They had always been just two friends who had a lot in common and enjoyed each other's company. Which is completely fine and I was keeping an open mind after this point because I figured this story could be working a whole different angle. The development of their romantic love for each other could come after the sex. This can work for me too, but in the end I didn't feel it.

The lack of communication was a problem that led to some frustration on my part. These two didn't seem to want to come out and share their true feelings with one another, which in turn led to some unpleasant consequences down the road when certain things things on Shane's side came to light. He made a foolish choice early on. One that caused considerable damage simply because he wasn't willing to risk rejection when she put him back in the friend zone. I would have liked to have seen him put up more of a fight for her, made some attempt to show her he was going to work to win her over.

While this one wasn't quite what I was hoping for, I think many readers will still enjoy Leah and Shane's story. It appears as if I may be in the minority with my feelings. I'm still looking forward to more from this author, I will be reading Us on Repeat when it releases next year.

I had been crazy looking forward to this book. I adore friends-to-lovers romance, I love Ms. Nolan’s writing style, and – that cover though, right? This was a no-brainer for me.

And it did not disappoint.

Leah and Shane’s story is – life. I mean, it’s not all rainbows and heart eyeballs and hot, hot sexy times (though, I mean, all of those things are in here). I can’t tell you how many times I found myself nodding along with what I was reading, like – “yes, I have totally been there.” Or “yes, I totally would have reacted the same way.” Or “yes, yes, yes! Preach!” Ms. Nolan has captured the nuances of this relationship – and the journey it takes – perfectly, and it is by turn light-hearted, funny, sweet, sexy, and honest.

I maybe would have liked a little more build-up at the front end. The transition was a little quick and so it took a little longer for my heart to get attached. But once it got attached, it was all in. I completely adored every interaction (even the not-so-pleasant ones) between Leah and Shane. It felt very authentic, and was written so beautifully. I loved their entire story, how they evolved (personally, and as a couple) and what they meant to each other. I also fell a little in love with the secondary characters – Bryan now holding a special place in my heart because ugh, adorable!

In all? This was a completely lovely friends-to-lovers romance with a few subtle twists and a lot of warm fuzzy feels. I tore through the story, laughing, tearing-up, and nodding along as I went. I had so much fun reading it and cannot wait to see what Ms. Nolan has in store for us next. ~ Shelly, 4 Stars

Guys! I LOVE friends to lovers stories and I fell in love with Caroline Nolan with her debut novel and now have fallen in love EVEN MORE with her new book EVERYTHING UNEXPECTED.

So this book will touch on the question - Can a man and a woman ever really be JUST friends? I, for one, think that you can - I grew up on Long Island and really had many more guy friends than girl friends and I loved hanging out with guys and being drama free :) That being said, I really do think it depends on the circumstances and if there is attraction behind that friendship and just how far you are willing to go.

Everything Unexpected is the story of Shane Carlisle and Leah Kessel who met in college at a party. It's the classic case of boy meets girl except while he is instantly interested and attracted to her, Leah has a boyfriend. Five years later, he is a photographer who travels the world and she is a lawyer and they are the best of friends. They know each other like the back of their hands, they are crazy close and they have never kissed or even thought of anything more....well, until his birthday when one of their friends brings it up and then a night of partying and tequila leads to that something more. (HOT ALERT!!!) And here comes the promise of - well things won't change right?? We will still be the same after this??

But really in truth, things can never be the same for them again! Because when something so intimate happens, when feelings are brought into the mix, awkwardness ensues, and what was once only comfort and ease between them no longer exists.

I can't really get too in detail with the story because I don't want to ruin it for you. But SO MUCH happens...and its crazy good!!! :) I know that's so vague lol but I LOVED this story. It is such a cute read, no crazy drama but truly a light hearted, fun, and realistic to life read. I found myself smiling (a lot!), and laughing, and crossing my fingers that the way that I hoped this story would go would happen for these characters because I just wanted everyone to be happy. I just wanted fate to happen <3

If you are a reader who loves friends to lovers stories, who has "faith in all things unexpected" and you love sweet, genuine men who love their women with their heart and soul and would do anything for them, then give this book a try. This is Caroline Nolan's second book and I see many great things for her in her future. She has found a devoted fan in me and I look forward to what she has in store for us next! 4 LOBSTER STARS!!!

A few too many well-known and well-used tropes...namely the friends to lovers and oops I'm pregnant.  Despite that, the characters are cute and even relatable at times.  The writing is good and if you're in the mood for an easy-going and not overly wrought with emotion type of romantic read, this could be the perfect fit.

I remember reading Caroline’s first novel and was completely blown away that she was a debut author. I’ve read a few first time author novels and they pale in comparison to the talent that Caroline has for writing. That being said, I was very excited to read this book. Like the title of this book it was Everything Unexpected but unexpectedly everything ☺

I’ve met a few guys over the years that I just clicked really well with. I’m married and very much in love with my husband but that doesn’t mean I won’t occasionally meet another man who I just click with, like I do with woman. It is usually because we share the same sense of humour, sometimes the same taste in music. This is what happens with Leah & Shane.

They meet at a party one night, when they are in college. She has a boyfriend and although he is initially interested in her, he is soon very much friend zoned by Leah. She is in a committed relationship but despite that, a friendship between them grows, over the span of five years. During that time they have both dated other people and moved into really rewarding careers. From the outside looking in Leah and Shane are a couple, without the intimacy and sex.

This friendship/relationship between them has been the topic of conversation amongst their friends, unbeknown to them. When they are out drinking at a birthday celebration with friends one night, the line gets a little blurred and then it is crossed. They have phenomenal drunken sex together, the best they have ever had with anyone. Prior to jumping into bed though, they promise each other that this will change nothing between them, in the morning they will put it behind them and carry on with how things have always been.

‘Maybe it took something so unexpected to make us getting together so… predictable.’

Here’s the thing about no-strings sex, if you have known someone for that long and shared everything about your life with each other, there is no way feelings won’t be involved. I think they were both stunned about how intense and incredible it was. The morning after was a huge moment for them and it was also really sad too. One of them was so desperate to cling onto what they ‘had’ out of fear of losing it that it clouded their judgement and consequently put a bit of a wedge between them.

Everything has now changed, their friendship feels awkward and instead of feeling comfortable around each other, things just feel off. There is obviously a huge amount of attraction between them but that was a one off thing right? What happened that night has now become the catalyst of what will be a downward spiral away from what they once had. Shane is desperate to show Leah how much more they can be and she is battling with what’s going on in her own heart and mind. They either need to go back to just friendship or take the leap into what could be a wonderful life together.

‘But this? These confused feelings? These are…. Unexpected. Shane’s words run through my head, only adding to my torment. What more could happen? Apparently everything. Everything could still happen.’

Okay, a side note on this book. I’ve left out the ‘big stuff’ because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone else. I have to say this though, Shane is so fucking sweet! I loved him so much ☺ He has these incredible conversations with his father that my heart just melted over. Like this:

“Boy,” he says that one word with such command, I look up immediately. “You want to be a man at night, you be a man in the morning. Understand me?"

He absolutely adores Leah and is so in-tune with her, I really loved that. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I am in love with Shane ☺

Another fantastic, heart warming read from Caroline that I found very hard to put down. Now go write some more books for me!

Have you read one of those books that just make your heart happy? Everything Unexpected was just that.

Shane and Leah have been the best of friends for years and haven't consciously felt the need to change their platonic status. They are quite confident in their feelings for one another until one night of unexpected curiosity changes everything. Their world seems to be spiraling out of control so the question is, are they still capable of being JUST friends?

You would think that this book like every Friends to Lovers story is the same. But as the title says, it was everything unexpected.

I am in love with Shane. He is sweet, passionate, caring and hot. So Darn HOT! Leah is one of the strongest characters I've read and all of the things about her make you admire her.

As Phoebe said, Lobsters mate for life, reading Shane and Leah's story made it true that they are each other's soulmate. They were such real characters that you couldn't help but relate to them. The story was FANfreakingTASTIC. This is easily one of the BEST Friends to Lovers romance I have read. Don't believe me? See it for yourself! ~Sonal

I received this book to review from the author, and I absolutely enjoyed it. I flew through the pages of a friendship that in one night changes forever. The ups and downs of having loved someone without even realizing it. Having married my best friend after 5 years of friendship (coincidence?!?!) and knowing what trials and tribulations come with knowing someone one way and getting to know them in a totally different way, I felt connected to the story on every level.. First time I have read this author and am excited to read more from her. Heart, close friends and their very own "Joey" went above and beyond my expectations. Thank you Ms Nolan for the opportunity to read about these "lobsters" <----I got every Friends reference made...love that show! lol

I effin loved this book! I loved every single page. The ones filled with humor and laughter, the ones filled with love and sweetness, the ones with heartache and breath-holding moments. The prologue pulled me right in and couldn't stop reading until I finished (let's just ignore the unavoidable workday in between). The author's eloquent writing style I first discovered in This Is Love and which made me fall in love with this author, was just as present in Everything Unexpected. The characters you can so easily feel connected to, feeling all of their emotions... You just can't help but fall head-over-heels with them. I feel sorry for everyone who will read this novel after me... because, Shane. Is. Mine. ;) As another reviewer stated, "This story is nothing short but incredible!", I can do nothing but agree.
Read it and I promise you will love it. I want this author's next book, like, yesterday!

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

The first third of the book was slow going for me, but once the major plot point was revealed the got better for me.

The story is about two friends who, after a night of drinking, take their friendship to the next level and are filled with regrets that they cannot go back in time. During the course of the book, they realize that going back is not an option, but the relationship that develops is even better than the great friendship that they once had.

I would be interested in reading other stories from this author.

Everything Unexpected was about Shane and Leah, two college students who met at a frat party becoming instant friends over a competitive game of foosball.
Shane and Leah friend zoned each other, remaining off-limits sexually for five years. For five years they continued dating other people and carried on with life while ignoring the feelings that were developing between each other.

“Nothing will prove yourself more of a man than the way you conduct yourself right now." Quote from book. Probably the best quote I ever had the pleasure of reading.

Caroline I was hanging on the edge of my seat with anticipation. The unknown direction these characters choices made had me craving more. Definitely a page turner. I was wrapped up in this book. I could not wait to get back to reading. In fact, I wanted to push life aside and focus only on this book. It's been awhile since a book grabbed my attention this way. Reading is a daily occurrence for me and I've enjoyed many authors and a variety of genres, yet very few hook me. I'm reeling with anticipation. I can't say that word enough. It's not even the connection it's the way I have to wait for the unexpected.

Everything Unexpected was about Leah and Shane exploring a platonic friendship for years. The story further explored how two characters shared feelings towards each other but both were confused towards the meaning. Both were blasé in regards to the meaning and depth of their friendship. One night changed the course of their lives in very unexpected ways.

The story read as a reminder of what it's like to live life's moments as they happen. As an adult looking back you are fondly reminded of those moments thinking how young, immature, and naive you were. So much to learn.
These two characters explored the unknown together learning new feelings and emotions unexpected to them. Their journey at life was memorable and depicted well. These two characters undergo a variety of unexpected changes in life, but what's interesting was how oblivious they were to the choices available and the uncertainty of their feelings. They would wait to the last possible moment to make a decision. Nothing was planned. Actually that was incorrect. Careers were planned. Friendship was planned. Life, choices, and circumstances were not planned.

“Everything is going to change.” To highlight and drive the point home the entire premise of the story was based on this one quote. Change was an unexpected occurrence for these characters and the way they handled the changes was admirable.
This book was a reality check on life and the circumstances that bring people together. I felt a connection to these characters because I shared in these feelings. The situations that were addressed by Caroline were real occurrences.
This book was an educating lesson on life and one I wish I had available to me when circumstances created changes in my life.

Everything Unexpected is Caroline Nolan’s sophomore book, and boy did she impress me with such an enjoyable and sweet friends-to-lovers story!

Very well written, the author could not have picked a better title for this book as life keeps throwing the unexpected at best friends Shane and Leah. With such relatable and loveable characters, even the no filter Bryan who reminds me so much of my husband at times, this book will definitely give you all the feels.

Such a great read that I highly recommend! Looking forward to seeing what this author comes up with next.

Wow.. First of all I have to admit that the book cover is abso-freaking-lutely gorgeous conveying the story in the art form beautifully. This book is the journey of friends to lovers. But the way it is written makes it so much more. Leah and Shane have been best friends for so many years and in spite of both being single, they never have been together even casually so when after lots of shots, prying friend's questions makes them both curious to find out on what they have been missing.
That one night though changes their friendship in so many ways, good and bad.
I really loved Leah as a person. It's very difficult for a woman who's worked so hard for her career to put other things before her work but through it all she does manage it all so bravely. SHANE.. I have to admit in the beginning I wasn't his biggest fan and after a certain event I definitely hated him. But his persistence at showing Leah how much she really matters to him and how much he really loves her, made me fall for him hard... I freaking loved this one

Sometimes, all we really need is right in front of us; we just need someone to show us.

Leah & Shane are best friends who've never seriously considered taking their relationship outside the parameters of friendship. During a birthday celebration, certain ideas planted take root, and it sets in motion a chain of events that leave Shane & Leah surprised.

I like friend-to-lovers romance, but I really enjoyed this one because there was a "realness" to it. Their HEA wasn't cut and dried - it was downhill, then uphill with pitfalls along the way, as they tried to figure out what their "us" was.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, and definitely recommend it to everyone!!

This was such a sweet and enjoyable quick read, but at times also thought provoking.

Leah and Shane, our main characters, have a cute relationship and you cannot not to love them.
They have been friends for 5 years until one day everything unexpectedly change and they have to take some tough decisions and make some adjustments in order to make their friendship survive.

This was my first Caroline Nolan book even if I've already bought her debut novel, after I've appreciated her writing in this one I can't wait to start the other.

How one night can change everything!!!

This was a sweet and sassy friends to lovers read that I enjoyed mostly I did find at times that situations and descriptions were drawn out with maybe a bit too much detail for my liking but that didn't take from the overall story which I did get caught up in hence the 4*rating. I did really like how Shane and Leah handled the whole unexpected circumstances they found themselves in and at times had a smile on my face rooting for them too have a happily ever after !!!!

What a cute friends to lovers and more story. I adored them both and enjoyed their chemistry. I thought it was great. Their friendship was seamless and sweet, but also hot. They were funny, but meant to be together and it was obvious. It was a great, fast paced read for me.

Let's just say I REALLY wanted to like this book. I read the introduction of this book and was immediately hooked. I mean, this is MY life right now! Can best friends be more?
The banter and relationship between Shane and Leah is relatable. After one drunken night, their lives change forever. It is here where I thought that the writing was well written but I felt it needed more. Suspense, more of something. The bickering and stubborness between the two was lost on me. Yes, it's comparable to real life but I needed more in book. I did however, thoroughly enjoy reading from Shane's point of view. The love he has for Leah and knowing he would do anything to protect her melted my heart. And when he realized just how much he loved her-*SIGH* Loved every part of that!
It was a good read, I was just wanting more. Again, this book is playing out my life right now and maybe that's why I have so many mixed feelings about it!
