A 3rd Time to Die

Rate this book
Two souls struggle to fulfill their destinies together. Twice, in the 17th and 19th Centuries, just as they discover the magic of their love, their lives are snuffed out by brutal murder. Reborn for the third time in the 21st Century, they discover each other again… and their killer is once again stalking them!

ASHLEY EASTON rescues a badly abused horse and decides to return to show jumping, the passion of her youth. The animal gives her unquestioned love, something she no longer receives from her husband, KEITH. But when Ashley begins to compete, she is terrified as the course seemingly morphs into an old forest, the jumps transformed into real walls, fences and streams. Her thoughts spill through her head in elegant French, a language she barely knows, as she attacks the fences with a fearless abandon uncharacteristic for her, winning every event.

CRAIG THORNTON is fed up with the rampant promiscuity of his society wife, TONI. An expert horseman, he attends a jumping show, seeing Ashley compete with Injun. After several missed attempts, they meet and become fast friends, their love of horses a mutual bond.

Trying to sort out her troubled marriage and to address a strange terror swamping her whenever she’s intimate, Ashley seeks psychotherapy with DR. FELDMAN. Resorting to hypnotic regression, they are stunned to find her in past lives, first in the 17th Century as the French countess who fills her head while jumping Injun, and then in Philadelphia as the daughter of a shipping tycoon. Each life is fulfilled by the wonder of passionate romance, quickly terminated by their gristly murder!

The doctor assures her these are pure figments of her subconscious, but he is shaken, realizing the truth. He somehow sees their slaughter through his own eyes! And he suspects their killer is here again, in this time!

As Ashley’s and Craig’s marriages disintegrate beyond repair, they suddenly discover much more than just friendship. It’s as if they’ve loved each other forever.
How wonderful to be in love with your best friend!

The lovers struggle to free themselves from broken marriages and find happiness in this lifetime, unaware there is again someone, nearby, intent on fulfilling an ancient legacy of death.

Will this be a 3rd time to die?

This powerfully heartrending romantic saga is unexpectedly engaging

This complex tale that spans across three different ages, interweaves romantic fiction with a historical undercurrent; that is most interesting to read. It is the story of lost soul mates searching for one another; to find that when they do it is all too late. The concept of love and how it impacts upon our lives is explored through the main characters Ashley and Craig, whose paths cross during the 17th Century, 19th Century and the 21st Century (modern day). Full of mystery, suspense and intrigue this fascinating multilayered tale really captures in essence human emotion and how love holds such sway over us. Additionally to the historical details is a fantasy/ paranormal edge to this story, which segregates it from your typical historical romance into something much more original and innovative. One element of this book that captured my interest was the references to Show Jumping and Ashley’s horse, as I am a keen equestrian and horse lover. The murder mystery within the storyline was another surprising supplement to the dense plot, adding yet another layer to the story and taking it in a different direction altogether.

This novel is foremost a romantic tale of two individuals endeavouring to be together, with their love having no time constrictions regardless of what year it is. The historical aspects and those parts set in the 17th and 19th Century were written well, although the details were somewhat vague and certainly not as polished as a historical fictional novel by more of a recognized author. The parts relating to horses I very much enjoyed reading but I would advise readers to take note of the fact that this is not solely a story about horse riding, as the characters and other events take greater precedence. George Bernstein’s book caught my eye due to it being a historical novel with equestrian references, and yet it is more reminiscent of a Barbara Erskine, Diana Gabaldon or Bee Ridgeway novel. This is due to the interlinking time zones and interconnecting plot lines, with the hero & heroine (or Romeo & Juliet figures) holding substantial weight over the lesser subplots.

This is a story about a great struggle that will test two lovers to their limits. It is a tale of an ancient legacy of death. It is about a French Countess and a daughter of a shipping tycoon bearing witness to a murder. Ultimately, it is about two individuals and the strong bond between them that endures the barrier of time.

Talk about a romance with a twist, or two! Love through the ages, two souls meet again and again, each time, their lives are brutally ended. Could a psychiatrist hold the answer to their reincarnations and prevent history from repeating itself for a third time? A 3rd Time to Die by George Bernstein takes the idea of soul mates destined to be together and throws in some intrigue, greed, love, lust and the possibility that Ashley and Craig could die again.

If you are looking for a warm historical romance filled with mystery, and layers upon layers of twists, well-developed characters with heart, who find each other throughout time, each a little changed, each not perfect, but perfect for each other, who have made mistakes, but own up to them, here it is! George Bernstein has crossed genres, given wonderful historical details, as well as intense contemporary scenes, and shadowed them in a sometimes dark fantasy world that is enjoyable to read, captivating and easy to picture in the mental movie screen of your imagination. Mr. Bernstein has nailed this one with his crisp style of writing without slowing the pace, but keeping the mystery alive through the satellite characters who are key to the romance between Ashley and Craig. It left me wondering about soulmates and love through the ages, is it really possible, probable?

I received this copy from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I will not go into details of the story since the synopsis is already clear enough. I will only say that it's a love story with a paranormal twist. The idea of past lives is what drove me to read the book, and for one who loves horses, the setting couldn't be better.

However, it took me awhile to get into it. The descriptive writing put me off for a while. Although well written, I feel I didn't need to know that her eyes were grey or her eyebrows were russet every time a facial expression was described. It also lacked articles sometimes giving it an odd feel. The short chapters are also unusual. The book has over 100 of them with many no longer then 1-2 pages. Although it makes it easy to read one more chapter before closing the book, it also makes it hard to get into the storyline. If you sneeze, you might miss a chapter.

That said, overall, I enjoyed the book. The idea was clever, the plot well built. The ending surprised me. (And don't forget to read the epilogue; it adds a little of 'Je ne sais quoi' to the story.) The characters were well developed, especially Ashley. Craig was a little mysterious, appearing out of nowhere at first, which adds to his charm. I liked that their love was built overtime and not rushed. It made them both loveable. Overall, it was a good read.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I'd like to thank the author for giving me the opportunity to read and review his work.

What is it about you stranger?
This is a love story with a mystery at the heart of it, a paranormal mystery. Why can Ashley Easton speak French so well? Why can she ride a horse so well, after only riding for just a few weeks? Who is the mysterious young man she meets in the dressage competition, and why is he so alluring? A 3rd Time to Die by George A. Bernstein is a love story and a mystery, rolled into one. It uses the concept of reincarnation as an interesting plot device.

Our first glimpse of Ashley Easton is of a woman rescuing a horse:
"Hey quit that!" Her shout raspy, she banged the gate with the side of the pitchfork. (p. 25)
The horse has always represented passion and desire in literature, and A 3rd Time to Die is no exception. Ashley's new horse brings her excitement and energy into her life and allows a new relationship to flourish. Ashley is revitalized and energized by rescuing the horse; it also brings into sharp relief the way her life has changed. Ashley is an engaging character who knows her own mind and who is financially independent. She feels a great deal, but takes a long time to act on these feelings: this is Ashley Easton's challenge. The reader feels the occasional sense of frustration, and is delighted she finally gets herself going.

Ashley’s lover, Craig Thornton is lovely and is everything that Ashley needs and wants: he is the polar opposite to Ashley's husband Keith, and is charming, interesting, fascinated by Ashley, shares her interests, and is caring. Their relationship changes over time, and as they learn more about each other, their characters develop in surprising and engrossing ways. A personal fault or two, however, might have helped to make Craig more real.

Craig Thornton is also an interesting contrast to Ashley because his marriage is breaking down, but it's not his fault: his wife is the one who is cheating. Bernstein thus sets up interesting parallels and contrasts in the relationships. The two spouses, Keith and Toni, are not pleasant characters. Keith is a husband totally lost from the relationship: he ignores the children and takes a mistress. I would have preferred a little more shading to these spouses to add more real complexity of personality: Keith doesn't help with the children, doesn't like anything about his wife anymore, is nasty in his other relationships; but has no redeeming quality. He is a little too bad to be human. He seems to have no saving grace : I know Craig is lovely but Keith must have been OK at one point.

The novel examines relationships. The men and women in A 3rd Time to Die are not just seeking anyone but someone special. In the opening 1895's past-life visionary flashback Charles sees in Victoria, a woman who is "passionate, sensuous and willful" (p. 6). He loves her for these qualities, and Ashley and Craig are similarly looking for very special traits.

Soul mates are important in this novel - people click and realize they are meant to be together. The website of the Australian Psychological Society says that: "newer fields of psychology, especially transpersonal psychology and ecopsychology, are taking seriously the holistic notion of human beings as comprising mind, body, and soul. These fields propose that people are spiritual beings living a human life that extends beyond our mundane existence and skin-encapsulated ego-self to include direct experience of the environment and the cosmos. They recognize the importance of integrating spiritual with physical and mental reality, that spirituality is but one part of the whole.” (http://www.groups.psychology.org.au/t...) The complications of the soul mates and reincarnation that have to be overcome make a really interesting plot device in this novel. The question of whether Ashley and Craig will survive their love, and who is against them and intends them harm is a gripping question.

The last main character is the psychologist Dr Feldman. He is an interesting character: he's helpful, but indecisive and his eventual insights and understandings moved the plot along. Feldman is one of Joseph Campbell's helpers . In Monomyth, Cambell explains that: "For those who have not refused the call, the first encounter of the hero journey is with a protective figure (often a little old crone or old man) who provides the adventurer with amulets against the dragon forces he is about to pass. What such a figure represents is the benign, protecting power of destiny.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monomyth) Feldman helps Ashley and Craig understand what is happening. This relationship is a satisfying aspect of the novel.

Ashley and Craig share a love of horse riding. As has been noted, the horse has always represented strong emotions and passionate desires in literature and this is also true in A 3rd Time To Die. Since D. H. Lawrence, the horse has been a staple representation of sexuality, freedom and power. Ashley's horse in the novel represents all the freedom of her youth, the regained sexuality that her unfulfilled marriage has stripped from her, as well as links to the past. A secondary meaning for the horse spirit animal is the balance between the instinctive and tamed parts of your personality. Ashley is thus more real when she is with her horse, Injun, than when she is in her house. She feels freer, her speech with Craig is more natural, but she also learns more about herself and the issues that are troubling her: "Jeez, that's when this started! The sense of riding through woods and whispered thoughts in French. Nothing as intense as now. Why the fantasy only haunt her when jumping a horse?" (p. 87). This is the symbolism of the nature / culture dichotomy.

The story’s structure is that of several parts with the first long section establishing the various different relationships. Ashley spends a considerable amount of time analyzing her (hopeless) marriage, before concluding that there is nothing to be done. This section was long and drawn out. I wondered why it took so long to get to a resolution of this point. Once the relationship with Craig was established and Bernstein managed to bring the pair together, the book moved along at a great pace.
In the final section the plot lines are drawn to a satisfying conclusion and the lovers’ relationship and future, and the circumstance of the nemesis are well resolved. A final catastrophic climax is well done and keeps the reader guessing until the last moment.

The role of money in the novel is interesting: Ashley is well off, thanks to her Father's money. She uses the processes and systems and makes them work for her to improve her life, rather than just make more money. This is a positive role for women.

A 3rd Time to Die's main theme is of course reincarnation. Have these people lived other lives? Who were they? Who is after Ashley and Craig now? Carl Jung believed that in a person's life, synchronicity served a role similar to that of dreams, with the purpose of shifting a person's egocentric conscious thinking to greater wholeness. Dr. Feldman helps promote this view in the novel. He is also a psychiatrist using various methods to assist his patients. Transpersonal psychology is a school of psychology that studies the transpersonal, self-transcendent or spiritual aspects of the human experience. Transpersonal experiences may be defined as "experiences in which the sense of identity or self extends beyond (trans) the individual or personal to encompass wider aspects of humankind, life, psyche or cosmos." Issues considered in transpersonal psychology include spiritual self-development, self beyond the ego, peak experiences, mystical experiences, systemic trance and other sublime and/or unusually expanded experiences of living. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transper...) Dr. Feldman moves from a more reductionist view of the mind to a more spiritual, Transpersonal approach and indeed the question of this new ideology and philosophy become central to the book.

A 3rd Time to Die is a love story with a twist, a paranormal mystery with an engaging heroine and plot surprises and developments which were very satisfying. The characters develop in interesting ways through time and as the novel progresses. The relationships were interesting and well-drawn. The plot lines are drawn to a satisfying conclusion, and the lover relationship and mystery of foreboding doom are well resolved. The conclusion is gripping and the answer is unexpected and pleasingly surprising. I am happy to rate this book as 4 stars out of 5.

"A 3rd Time to Die" by George A. Bernstein which I won from Goodreads Giveaways is a fascinating novel that blends a murder mystery with the paranormal and adds a spicey age old romance into the mix. The story opens with two vicious murders, one in 1695 A.D. and the other in 1845 A.D.; the bodies abandoned, torn apart in a country meadow. Then the plot swings to present day when Ashley Easton saves a horse called Injun from abuse. Locked into a loveless marriage with a selfish philanderer she decides to return to the horse show circuit, but when she does she's stunned to find that she jumps the fences with a new wild abandon, her thoughts in fluent French. Frightened by this discovery and finding herself drawn to Craig Thornton, a handsome man who has a deep love of horses and who's also caught in a hopeless marriage, she seeks help from the terror of her nightmare and her marital insecurities from Dr. Feldman,a renowned psychologist. What she discovers leads her on an exciting journey of self-discovery and into the path of true love.

The plot is will written and the setting unique as the author takes the reader into the world of horse jumping and fox hunting. The characters are as realistic as they are complex, and the reader gets quickly swept up in their lives. Ashley Easton is family -oriented, loyal, warm and trusting, determined to overcome an unexplained fear during sex. With the help of Dr. Feldman and knowledge of her husband's betrayal, her gullibility vanishes and she begins to change becoming strong-willed and resolute in her decisions. Craig Thornton married to Toni,an oversexed and faithless woman seems bound by his lust at first until he gravitates toward the joy and security of loving a reliable and trustworthy woman like Ashley. As their love grows he becomes more self-assured, honest and open. Even the antagonists in this story are colourful; Toni, the oversexed, man-hungry wife, Keith the weak, arrogant, selfish husband and Nicole Phillips, the greedy mistress with a killer instinct.

Into the story is woven all the ingredients of a suspenseful thriller- jealousy, betrayal and madness - which make it a page turner from beginning to the end. But amid all the evil that stalks the lovers are wonderful elements of hope, love, and deliverance. My only surprise was the epilogue which did nothing to enhance or take away from this riveting novel. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and would recommend it to others

I love the idea of past lives and reincarnation. Not sure I believe it, but the thought that I was once someone else 300 years ago is very intriguing.

Ashley Easton is a wife, mother and competitive jumper. But she has also been Victoria, a French Countess in the late 1600’s. And Morgana, an heiress to a shipping business in 1850. Her life has tragically ended twice in 300 years, both times in the same exact way.

Unknown to her, her past and present lives all involve the same people. She marries the same man, has an affair with the same lover, and dies at the hands of the same psycho path— along with her lover Craig Thornton.

Craig was once a Duke and later a lawyer in his past lives. In the present he is a successful business man, in a loveless marriage to a tramp. And then, like all the previous years before, he runs into Ashley—the woman he is destined for in every life.

Ashely and Craig bond over their love of horses and become close friends. It’s not until later when Ashely starts therapy and discovers her past lives that she realizes she and Craig have history…a history that has ended very badly for both of them. Will the same bloody end meet them for a third time, or will Ashely and Craig finally get to live out their happily ever after?

I liked the book. It has an interesting plot, the writing was good and I found the characters engaging. I did think there was more repetitiveness in it than necessary, especially when it came to telling and retelling their regression sessions. I had major issues with the relationship between Toni and her brother. Ick. I was surprised by who the murder was revealed to be, though. It turned out to be a good twist.

This book is mysterious, entertaining and features a paranormal element that isn't used enough, in my opinion which makes it unique. Definitely something to check out for sure!

The writing for this book is really good, and the author tells a rich story, but it just wasn't for me. I like the idea of reincarnated soul mates, but I don't like that they were married before they met each other in each life time. Plus, the main characters marry really despicable people, so I question their intelligence. One of the spouses is so in your face with their infidelities that when the main character doesn't divorce them right away, for me, it puts that character in a negative light, and makes me think they are weak. Also, why in the heck would the characters go do something that they know has been a dangerous situation for them in their past lives multiple times! It's so stupid! They don't even think to bring protection, and when the opportunity arrives to show strength, I was really disappointed in Ashley. She was completely helpless, and basically curled up to die, so yeah, I wasn't too keen on their intelligence level. Plus, it takes way too long for the story to progress. The story is interesting, and entertaining, but just not for me. I listened to the audiobook, and I've listened to many books narrated by Denise Kahn, and this was a good job for her. There were a couple of weird spliced in audio parts, but not too bad, and this is the best audio quality I've heard from Denise Kahn. So, the writing is good, and the story is entertaining, so I'm sure many would enjoy this story, but it's just not quite my type of thing.

The prospect of a love that has spanned so many centuries had me anxiously waiting to get my hands on this sure to be memorable tale!

We see the brutal murders of the lovers in 17th Century England then again in 19th Century Philadelphia bringing us to the 21st Century where we meet Ashley in a loveless marriage with her long time husband, with 2 beautiful children and a love of horses. Craig knows his wife has been cheating on him for a long time but has yet to reach his breaking point. The two are in horrible stages of their lives when they meet through their love of horse and they cant shake the feeling of belonging.

This tale HOOKED me from start to finish! Witnessing those murders in the beginning and gaining a connection to the two lovers makes you race through the book. Horses are what bring the two together but it does not overpower the love story and concept that we receive. I loved the mystery of who the killer is (we don’t know till the very very end!), I was guessing the whole entire time. : ) There are twists and accepting the possibility of reincarnation and past lives. Man can Bernstein write a love story! He knows just how to get you to love the people he wants you to love and hate the ones that he intends for hatred. Marvelous!

I really enjoyed this book and I cant wait to see what else Bernstein puts out in this genre! If you are looking for mystery, love, some heartbreak, and destiny….this is for you!

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Do you believe in past lives? After reading this book you might be convinced! This is a book full of connections between the main characters and other connections that you find out about as you read through. The concept of connected souls is an old one but this story gives it a whole new twist and it was a pleasure to read. It is suspenseful, not giving away secrets until exactly the right time, and also with the right mix of romance, 'normal' life and paranormal activity.

The characters in the book, whether they are main ones or supporting characters, all have immense depth to them. Mr Bernstein has managed to give each character their own personal traits and flaws whilst also drawing parallels not only with each other but with past lives too. This is an incredible feat of writing that will draw you in and not let go until you have finished the story.

The climax to the story is everything that it should be. It fills in any holes that have been left as the story unfolded while giving you a dramatic and satisfying conclusion.

Highly Recommended for all readers of the Paranormal and Suspense genres.

Do you believe in past lives? Do you ever have those deja vu moments when you know you have been somewhere or know someone but really can not figure out from where but the connection is definitely there-good or bad? Whether you do or don't believe this book will send chills up and down your spine as it takes you step by step through the past and present lives of two lovers destined to be together---eventually. Brutally murdered in their first two lifetimes the one person who witnessed both these atrocities is the only one who can save them.

This is an extremely well written, thought out and planned book from beginning to end-I can guarantee you will not be able to put it down! Strangely enough the author had to ask me why I had not reviewed the book yet. I had never received it! So I was resent the PDF version. Do you believe in coincidences? All I know is I definitely want to read more of the author's work.

Mysterious, thrilling, unique and captivating are some of the first words that pop into my mind when thinking about the best way to describe this book. A different sort of time travel with the idea of past lives and reincarnation as this endless love that continues through the centuries manages to reach a modern era with a modern couple at the helm, fully engaging the readers attention. A villain with no name and face keeps the reader guessing literally till the very last pages. Although we bask in the romance between Ashley and Craig I would have liked to see it develop just a bit earlier in the story having it feel slightly more prevalent and having Ashley gain a lot more confidence. Over all a great choice for those who enjoy a little romantic suspense.

I received this book for a fair and honest review.

A bit of paranormal and a bit of suspense combine for one heck of a story. Past lives with visions of murder and a budding love story make for some sticky situations for Ashley and Craig, the two main characters.

This was a very unique story with no angels, demons vamps or wolves involved. The suspense comes from something completely different and that's quite refreshing for readers who are full up of those types of books.

The plot is engrossing and will keep you up reading late into the night to find out what happens next.
