Eioth is crowned High King. The problem that has haunted the High Court elves has been answered. They all live happily ever after, right? Sadly no. During the Third Harvest celebration the weather spells shatter and Elemental Magic is rendered impotent. Widespread flooding endangers the citizens of the empire. Far to the south, Silva, a weaver displaced by the floods, and Federan, heir to the True South, must use a form of magic that cannot possibly exist, but it does, to protect the people of the empire from rain that will not stop.
Like the first volume, a very enjoyable read. A satisfying (and rather more clearly consensual than that of the first volume) romance, and a sweeping epic as well (if rather less bloodthirsty than most, and that’s all to the good). Some puzzling features; I was still not quite sure why/how the relationship between the protagonist and her mother deteriorated quite so quickly (if the fact that mortals might, but were forbidden to have magic were quite so thoroughly forgotten, how did the taboo remain so deeply ingrained?) But all in all, the story sweeps along inventively, the characters are pretty believable and fun to be with (the uber-fictional Norfarland is particularly entertaining), and there is a not-entirely unforeseen twist at the end. A bit of a cliff-hanger at the very end, though, so I hope the next volume appears soon!
This book follows on from Changing Magic: the Use. You really need to have read book one to make sense of this, as it established most of the characters, as well as the law and lore of the world.
The Complications of Changing Magic is an excellent high fantasy book. It's also quite hard to review without spoilering.
However, Silva and Federan, the MCs, are beautifully written. The tragedy which strikes at the beginning of the book is unexpected, as are people's reactions to it. Silva and Federan both rise to the challenge of dealing with it magnificently.
THIS BOOK ENDS ON A MAJOR CLIFFHANGER. it's so cliffhangery, you need ropes and climbing shoes to live with it.
I am EAGERLY awaiting book 3, and am praying to whoever's listening that it comes soon.
Do not to read this book at all unless you want to get used to disappointment - 'Cliffs of Dispair' level of disappointment.
Initially an intriguing sequel to the first book in the series, this book expands on the magic and racial conflicts set up in the first book, and we are introduced to a new form of magic. But though I enjoyed what there was of the story, the fact that it ends on a cliff-hanger with no resolution spoiled the experience entirely. And this is not a mild 'where do they go from here?' cliff-hanger, it involves mortal danger to both protagonists we have been lead to care about and potential total destruction of the empire. So my feelings of rage and betrayal are a testament to my enjoyment of the book, up until the last chapter.
Dear Elements! Don't leave us hanging! This second book is better written than the first which seemed to have too much sex for its own sake. Now I see why. But these characters and the catastrophe they face are realistic and totally sympathetic. When is book three coming out. I can't hold my breath much longer!
Dear Elements! Don't leave us hanging! This is a much better book than the first volume which had too much gratuitous sex in it. Now I see why. Necessary background for this story. In this volume the characters are totally sympathetic and the development of the love story in the midst of environmental disaster too relevant. Please D L Carter write fast!!!
It seems like I have waited forever for this book! And then, it came out when I wasn’t looking. I love, love love! D. L. Carter‘s elf universe. She fills her pages with action, adventure, suspense, mystery, and just the right amount of romance. Silva and Federan are meant for each other. Their strengths compliment the other’s. They are not perfect, but both have a strong sense of duty. Now the wait begins for book three, and a sigh leaves me as I contemplate how much longer it will be before the author blesses me with another doze of Magic. Please hurry...
This 2nd installment is worthy of the 1st! I just love the imagination that went into the world of the Empire! There are high, mid- and low court elves, half-mortals and mortals. Very interesting twist at the near end, but that leads to a bit of a cliffhanger ending that has me yearning for book 3. However, I found the excerpts of the Norfarland the Bastard saga at the start of each chapter a bit annoying and am still waiting for the purpose of it all.
This book was as good if not better than "Changing Magic The Use". It compliments book one and continues the saga. Great characters and loved the way the past and present are blended. Kept my interest till the last sentence and excited to the next book!
I went into this series as a skeptic. But the storyline, the writing style, the descriptions and the characters seized me fast and refused to let me be. An amazing series and I am now waiting impatiently for Book 3
Excellent follow up on the first book, warning though ends in a freaking cliff hanger >.>
Good world building fairly typical arrogant elves vs downtrodden humans but enjoyable :)
The blurb in the first book makes it sound explicit and tawdry (not always a bad thing!!) but there was a romance and partnership build that was really engaging LOL even going to recommend this to my Mum! (will just tell her she might have to flick past a few pages)
When I checked last the 1st book http://www.amazon.com/Use-Changing-Ma... was only US 0.77 so a bargain for 400 pages of decent enjoyable fantasy without a too stupid to live heroine!!
Oh my goodness! I do hope the author is working on book 3! So many new discoveries made, so many plot threads to continue...
The action all takes place within a few months of that in the first book - Halidan's pregnancy is just showing by the end of this one, but such a lot has happened. The time-scale is all perfectly believable though.
I really enjoyed this look at the world outside the circle of the High Elves, even though it is in a time of tragedy. The characters are all very believable and multi-faceted.
And now not only do I want to know what happens with the amazingly high cliff-hanger at the end, but I want to know how Mitash gets on.
This is truly an amazing series. The author has created a world of elven magic and the forbidden magic, she's created powerful, mesmerizing characters and an extremely fascinating storyline. I had a hard time putting this down. Now waiting on book 3.....
I fell in love with the characters as I had in the first book. In this book the first books characters took a secondary role. I missed them! T This book can be read without reading the first if need be.
Book Two of Changing Magic begins a few months later. The Use followed elf Eioth, now High King, and mortal Hallidan. The Complications introduces mortal Silva and half elf, half mortal Federan who if the Heir of his area of the Entire da
Rats. This ends in a real cliff hanger, unlike Book 1. (Majorly pisses me off when that happens.) However, there are some great moments in this book and more wonderful characters (Tormin for example) and I love the details of the flooding etc.
Really not sure how to rate this book. The cliff-hanger was a bummer -especially as Book 1 brought the main story to a very satisfactory conclusion as well as opening the way for further stories.
