Mid.

This novel has a lot of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll (well, actually, country music, but close enough). At first, I was mildly traumatised, but then I realised that I have watched many on-screen depictions of the same subject matter; I'm just not used to reading it. (Welcome to adulthood, I guess. Although, I was pleasantly surprised by the way certain aspects were handled, considering it was written in the '80s.)

Even though The Doll Hospital ended up being different from what I had expected, I still enjoyed it. The blurb had me thinking this would be more character-driven, focusing on a small group of characters through their various struggles, with lots of scandalous drama (think: The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars). That's not the only thing the blurb got wrong, though. They referred to a character named "Lavender" as "Lavinia"... That aside, The Doll Hospital does a good job of illustrating how different types of drugs affect different people's lives - whether you're an addict, a dealer, or acquainted with one.

In a way, reading this was the equivalent of watching a medical drama. You follow the stories of various patients and staff at Tanglewood, the titular hospital, over the course of a week. It may not be cerebral or groundbeaking, but it's somehow still addictive and comforting.
