Can a twenty-first century independent woman find her true destiny, in thirteenth century Scotland?

At his father’s bidding, Cade MacKenzie begs a favor from Laird Macrae - Lady MacKenzie desperately needs the renowned Macrae midwife. Laird Macrae has no intention of sending his clan’s best, instead he passes off Elsie, a young woman with little experience, as the midwife they seek.

But fate - in the form of a mysterious older woman and an extraordinary pocket watch - steps in.

Elizabeth Quinn, a disillusioned obstetrician, is transported to the thirteenth century. She switched souls with Elsie as the old woman said she would but other things don’t go quite as expected. Perhaps most unexpected was falling in love with Cade MacKenzie.

The second book of The Pocket Watch Chronicles is better than the first book. This is because it is longer. With its length, a lot of things happened and I was able to immerse on the story more compared to the first one.

I can't stop reading time travel romance nowadays, lol.

Anyway, while reading this I realized that if by chance I will be transported back in time, I will fall on the category of heroines that I'm usually not fond of: damsel in distress, haha.

I don't have anything that I can contribute for the betterment of the clan. If I ended up as a lady's maid or lady in waiting, I will be the worst one. First I don't know anything about fashion and makeup and hairdos and I'm not okay with being treated as someone without any rights just because I'm poor.

I love how these books tackle the lack of rights of women during this particular period. And I love how Elsie or Elizabeth tried to adapt but not compromise her stand.

I love this story. The conflict was not that much of a conflict but I really love how the story ended. Cade and Elizabeth's story is amazing and awesome in a way that it transcends time. I'm onto the next book now! ^_^

Ceci Giltenan rocks my world again and takes me on another delicious roller coast rides ride that I simply wanted to stay on forever! The Midwife is simply another masterpiece which I simply could not put down! This book is another extraordinary mind-blowing riveting memorable adventure you won't soon forget! Filled with breathtaking interwoven plot twists, intricate scenes, dazzling dialogue, with star crossed lovers, and lined with mystery, suspense, emotion, retribution, conflict, betrayal, duplicity, subterfuge, heartbreak and love that left me spellbound and gave me chills that curled my toes! Brilliant settings, magnificent plots and dialogue with likeable characters that leap off the pages and right into your heart! The Midwife is absolutely magnificent and the second book in Ceci's Giltenan's exceptional and unforgettable The Pocket Watch Chronicles, time travel series that can be read as a stand alone or in book order. I alway recommend book order just because I think it is more fun, but not necessary.

In this book again our favorite magical elder, Gertrude, has to convince another cynical non-believer to take the magic pocket watch and believe if only believe just a wee bit bit and go on a journey of a lifetime! Those who read The Pocket Watch will remember Gertrude as Maggie Mitchell also had believed that Gertrude was eccentric or touched in the head with senility. Maggie also had not believed her , but just went along with the persistent sweet old lady.

Also how Gertrude explains, how the pocket watch works and how two souls can switch places hundreds of years apart. Although one is destined for death no matter if there is a soul switch or not. This way Gertrude's chosen - won't feel it is another "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" film comes to life, or any dark black magic with possible foul deeds are at play. Some things are just your destiny no matter what,

After all who wouldn't want to take a glance at the past, the part you only read about in history books! How can Gertrude possibly convince this cynical women that her life is about to change for how long or indefinitely was totally up-to her. In this case totally upto Dr. Elizabeth Quinn if she wanted to to take a chance on hope and faith and follow her heart. It might possibly change the course of her life as it was headed toward a downward spiral, but elder Gertrude already know she was going to be one hard nut to crack!

Our heroine Dr. Elizabeth Quinn is not enjoying life as she should one who has always succeeded at everything and at only twenty eight years of age she is a very successful OBGYN. Yet Elizabeth is extremely brilliant and intelligent beyond her years yet disillusioned to the core at her career path and life in general. Elizabeth can't even remember one of her patients or the newborn babes she had helped deliver into the world! It's just a cluster of patients, one case after another, but nothing to make her feel passionate and proud anymore.

As Gertrude points out and Elizabeth can't help but agree - she wishes she did have some type of human connection with her patients and their families. To have some type of friendship, rejoice in the new birth, mourn in a loss of a life, a comradery with her patients like they did in the past where it was more personal. Not how it is now this sterile, robotic and cold environment where everyone has to be careful or worry about malpractice suits in this sue happy society.

As for her personal relationships always ended on the same pathetic note, but mostly her fault being a workaholic and go getter always feeling the need to get ahead and succeed in every aspect of her career. Yet Elizabeth was miserable with her life and this is how Gertrude persuades her in her way of thinking after all what did she have to lose?

As Gertrude explained she would switch souls with another body.... Those who read The Pocket Watch will remember Gertrude the sweet old lady that her last victim Maggie also finds her a bit senile or eccentric as she is the one who passes on the enchanted pocket watch who can have two souls switch bodies and also hundreds of years In time. Of course Dr. Elizabeth Quinn does not believe Gertrude and just like Maggie Mitchell had .

Again the one she is to switch places is to die and in this case in a brutal way,m but she would die no matter what as it is her time. In this case it is Elsie Macrae who is to scheduled to die and who Is to switch places with Elizabeth. Yet some things go off kilter and there is an accident that causes memory loss with Elizabeth as if she can't remember the last word she spoke in the 21st which was her ruby red slippers in a sense as it was her only ticket home or else she would be stuck in the 13th century forever!

The hero of the story Cade whose father Laird Angus MacKenzie whose wife Wynda has had several severe and tragic pregnancies that's ended in the babes not surviving. The Laird knows his wife won't be able to bear another loss as he loves Cade's Step-mother more then life. He hears The Macrae midwife is the best, but this scheming miscreant, Laird Macrae, who wants an alliance with the MacKenzie's and tries to take advantage of the MacKenzie's tragic circumstances.

Laird Macrae, knows Lady Mackenzie, has lost several babes and wanting an alliance with the Mackenzie's feeling so confident not worried that his ruse if found out it could start a Clan Civil war! The lying Macrae does not want to let go of his talented midwife in case she is needed here, but wants an alliance with the powerful MacKenzies so thinks he can have his cake and eat it too!

Macrae, decides to send an imposter instead and force her to tell lies who is actually a 21st century Dcotor! He tells her she must go along with the plan or will beat her to death! Not a great way to say be welcomed to the 13th century! Also he does not realize that every question she will be asked will actually be the truth. Laird MacKenzies son is the one who is to bring her back to their castle to attend his step- mother of course due to Elsie's 21 years of age. Cade and his men feel this is a big ruse, but Elizabeth chooses her words very wisely and answers them all honestly in a round about way. Yet she is is odd to them being so outspoken for one of her lower class and being a female too.

As they pursue the long journey and the lass with her bold tongue intrigues Cade like none before, plus she has proved in their travel she does have a bit of knowledge in the healing arts as well, Cade continues his flirtations and realise's she is the first lass ever to resist his chams which at first was more of challenge then a conquest , but it soon become something more-for the first time in his life he truly hates the rules and restrictions of the nobility. He wants a woman he can never have!

Of course the MacKenzie's are suspicious due to Elsie only being a lass of only 21 years but after she proves herself with knowledge even the greatest healers did not know and she is accepted. Plus for the first time Elizabeth is starting to fall in love with everything in is century including the Laird's son , who she can never marry due to their different classes. Cade is of nobility and Elizabeth just a midwife but she will be no man's mistress!

Many things have not gone as planned back in the 21st century and the Pocket Watch is missing! Someone from Elsie's past recognises her who is passing through at the Mackenzie holding who knows she is not a skilled healer she claimed to be!

Will it be time to pay the piper no matter how innocent Elizabeth is?

Will anyone believe her?

As her life might possible be forfeit if the truth comes out by either clan!

If she tells the truth will she be accused of using evil sorcery, dark magic or witchcraft and have her burned at the stake?

For a clan alliance or to avoid a clan war will she be forced to marry another?

One who was not Cade which would just force her to live another sterile miserable loveless and sterile existence?

What about Cade will he be ever trust Elizabeth again?

Will Cade close his heart off forever?

Will Laird MacKenzie force Cade into a political marriage? An alliance to strengthen the clan and a wife of his fathers choosing for his son and heir?

What about Lady MacKenzie's unborn child will it survive without Elizabeth's guidance and assistance or another tragic loss for The Mackenzie Clan?

So many unanswered questions and more in this remarkable and extremely enjoyable read that readers will just fall in love with ....I know I did!

Another captivating ,well researched fast paced page turner reader's won't be able to resist! Come's out 3/1/2016.

This book was awesome from beginning to end. If that's all I could write I would. I'm a lover of time travel romances, but I can say, so far this is my favorite.

Elizabeth is an OB in her time. When she gets switched into Elsie, a young girl from Scotland from 1279, she finds herself in quite the predicament. Her laird is trying to deceive another laird and she is sent as "the most skilled midwife" to tend to the Lairds wife. In all actuality the real Elsie is none of these things, but her laird doesn't know of the change that has occurred. She finds her self falling in love with the lairds son at the new castle. She soon finds love and a sense of family in this new life. She finally finds all she has ever searched for.

I just loved this book. From beginning to end it was amazing. It had time travel, romance, action, and hope. It had a colorful group of characters that would be hard not love, even Sir Cade! It was the best book I have read in a long time. I can't wait to read more from such an amazing author. She has definitely gained a new fan....Stormi

Absolutely love this story. Elizabeth an obstetrician is transported to the 13th century, she switches souls with Elsie and from there the author takes us on an extraordinary adventure. I couldn’t put this book down, read it in one sitting. The characters, the plot, the romance, everything just held my attention. Overall great read.

This book is the book that I needed in my life. No questions asked.

Mind you that I immediately read this after finishing the first book [as the pocket watch only had 100+ pages so it was relatively easy to finish] so the memory was still quite fresh from the first book.

And let me tell you, I have no regrets spending 5 hours of my day reading the first two books in this series, and most especially this.

Now you might be wondering, 'should I read the first book first before reading this book?' Well, it depends. If you want a brief context or want a brief read, then go check the first book out because some info would definitely help. But anything other than that, you can freely read this book first before anything else. Mind you that the next book is connected to this book so it's better to read this first before the next one.

I fell in love with this book mainly because I also wanted to be a doctor, and just like Elizabeth, I wanted to be an Obstetrician. This gave an unconscious soft spot in my heart. I'm already on my way to achieving my dream and reading this while knowing the majestic author, Ceci Giltenan, is leading a life I so very much want to have in the future, made me love this book more than I should have.

Ceci Giltenan, I learned, was an oncologist nurse and now a medical writer and is working full-time in the pharmaceutical industry. This made the book as medically accurate as it can.

Now, of course, I have to give you a preview of this book. This is about a successful doctor named Elizabeth Quinn [mhm I also smirked seeing her name] who completely had control over her life until her boyfriend of how many years broke up with her. Then suddenly while she was sitting on the airport, frowning at the canceled flight and unfortunate ability of her laptop not working, an old woman with the name of Gertrude sat beside her and gave her a choice- 'If you had a chance to experience a time where you could build a bond with your patients, where you have time to build relationships, laugh and smile with them while having enough time for mourning--Would you take it?' And she did, albeit reluctantly at first.

One reason why I like this book is the reason why her boyfriend broke up with her. It wasn't about cheating nor anything that would make you angry with David, Elizabeth's ex-boyfriend. He broke up with her because he knew that he wasn't enough of her. Elizabeth did not have loving parents but they had money and prestige. She always sought the best and did not do things half-assed. But she did not get the praise she deserved, and that's why she's so hard on herself. David told her that her constant need to be in 'control', striving to be the very best doctor, not missing appointments, not even having enough time to have a date with poor David, was because she still felt that she had to prove something to her parents. He broke up with her because he knew at that point in time he did not have a place in her heart and life. He was not enough for her. And that freaking broke my heart so much. I could've smacked her in the face if it wasn't for the happy ending I got after.

With a bump to her head, she fell asleep [she also forgot the keyword she was supposed to say in order to go back to her time so she was a bit worried at first but there were too many things happening that she had to set it aside.] She exchanged souls with Elsie, who was supposed to die but did not due to certain errors. This means that they are both living at the same time but at different times. Immediately upon waking up she was forced to saddle her way to the MacKenzie's to save the laird's wife from miscarriage again. The Macrae, whose clan Eslie was a part of, did not plan to send their best midwife and so sent Elsie, the Midwife's niece instead. The Macrae laird did not know at that time, but the lass he was about to send was supposedly the best midwife in the whole land, and possibly time.

Elizabeth saddled off with the MacKenzie Laird's son, Cade, to whom she had an instant attraction. Of course, it was the same with Cade but I feel it was more intense with him than her. I giggled a lot reading this book because of the banter and witty comebacks they both had with one another. You'll see that they had chemistry from the getgo and that further made them compatible and set the story right.

Of course, the McKenzie's knew that Elsie wasn't the best midwife but Elizabeth proved them otherwise. After a few chapters, you could see her proving her skills left and right, most especially with the McKenzie's midwife, Morag, who I absolutely adore. Their grandmother-daughter relationship was so wholesome as well as their mentor-apprentice that switches most of the time. I also loved the people who were there. There was no scowling mistresses nor women antagonist which made the story less burdensome and more enjoyable for me. There was only Macrae for the antagonist to be honest.

Of course, Elizabeth's secret would have to be uncovered. But at least the first one to know was the one she was supposed to help with, which was the McKenzie's lady, Wynda. And it made me sigh in relief knowing that our dear friend, Gertrude, already gave a disclaimer to Wynda about Elizabeth. That made things flow more smoothly, most especially with her and Cade.

They were getting closer and closer to each other. Cade, who viewed her first as a way to pass time already fell in love with her constant witty banters and joyful laugh, wanted her more than what they had and Elizabeth, although tempted, would have none of that. It made me love her character more with the no-nonsense attitude she had with every situation turned her way. She knew that Cade was nobility and that she was just a midwife which meant they couldn't marry. She told that clearly to Cade, which I freaking applauded and shouted 'yes!' from my seat, that she would not marry nor have relations with a man who could not take her as his wife. And I loved Cade more when he respected her wishes to stay away if he had no inclination to take her as his, then pursued her in the end because he was ready to leave everything behind and marry her for who she was, noble or not.

But I'd like to think that he wasn't really ready to let everything go. He knew that Elizabeth was worth much more than an alliance, more especially his father, so he was confident that he wouldn't be disowned. Quite devilish I know but I adored him more because of it. He wasn't one of those cliché men who would leave his boat behind to look for his wife in the sea. He was the type of man who would get on his boat, dry with food and coins, ready to search for his wife in the vast open sea, not relenting until he finds her. Basically, he wasn't a stupid man.

This book only had sex scenes at the end, and it was not in detail so don't read this for that. Read this for the witty banters, sharp humor, and straightforwardness that I so clearly adore with Elizabeth and her interacting with the people, especially Cade.

I'm not gonna spoil you further but all in all, I care for this book and am still feeling empty up to this minute, a few hours after finishing the book.

I could have written more but I felt it's better if you would read this in order to know what I'm talking about. After I completely beguiled you in reading this beautiful book, please come back here and chat with me. Tell me anything and everything. I would be glad to talk with you about this!

With best (or maybe devilish) intentions,

Ema.

What a unique spin on time-travel in a highlander romance series. I loved it. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the switching at first- but it worked for this author’s story.

I loved how the incorrigible rogue highlander didn’t get his way, as hard as he tried. For once, he met a smart woman who felt the pull towards him, but regards her morals and virtue and the way the clan would look at her, over falling flat on her back in his bed first. Good on her! I loved their moments together- and how he would teach her things and then tease her to rile her up.

I really loved the clan MacKenzie. Such great people. They loved Elsie/Elizabeth and were respectful and loyal to her.

She was a great asset to the clan and I loved how the story focuses on her healing skills and how she grows to love the clan, and a real good storyline, over just having too many sexy time scenes. The best part? Making Cade work for her affection without overdoing it. It was just perfect.

Towards the end, I loved the funny lines, sweet and tender moments, and cried on the sad and sweet tender times.

This is the 2nd book in the Pocket Watch Chronicles series by Ceci Giltenan.
It was as good as the 1st book, again we see Gertrude the old lady who meets up with Dr Elizabeth Quinn, an obstetrician who doesn’t seem to take time out for herself. Gertrude offers her a chance to have another life where she can slow down and smell the roses so to speak. Again the rules are she has sixty days to decide whether she wants to stay or return back to her busy life.
But before she can give the word to the watch, she is in an bad car wreck falls unconscious which then takes her back to 1279 and into the body of Elsie who is being dragged out of the castle to meet the Laird Mccrea, and the ever so sexy Cade McKenzie.
Ceci Giltenan has done it once again and I found myself in the story with these characters, I loved every word and I was gripped.
Can’t wait to read the 3rd book in the Pocket Watch Chronicles “Once Found” the story of Elsie and Gabriel in the present day.

In this Pocket Watch story Elizabeth goes back in the past and trades places with Elsie, a young woman being trained by her aunt to be a midwife but with little experience. Elsie is being forced by her Laird to go with men from another Laird who is requesting he send his best midwife to assist his wife. Elizabeth is a trained midwife so is happy to go with as she knows she can help whereas Elsie would not have consented. In this switch things go awry when Elizabeth trades places with Elsie before the actual decision is made by Elsie that leads to her death, and Elizabeth leaves the pocket watch behind. Elizabeth finds joy in her career as a midwife in the past while Elsie is thrown into the future. Cabe the Lairds son is soon entranced by Elizabeth but cannot marry her only make her his mistress (something Elizabeth will never except). Will they find love or will Elizabeth be forced to return to her life in the future?

Ceci Giltenan is simply amazing the way she transports you back to Scotland. I so enjoy reading a book and feeling like I'm right there watching everything play out as if I'm part of the book. Cade and Elise/Elizabeth were an adorable couple and I couldn't get enough of them. Ms. Giltenan has amazing talents that come through in everything she writes.

The Midwife ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️by Ceci Giltenan

This book had it all for me. Time travel to 1279 West Highlands. Meeting a strong Highlander and having all the knowledge of a twenty-first century doctor.

Dr Elizabeth Quinn is not to happy as an obstetrician in today’s world. The pace the hustle and bustle one patient after another never know your patients all is a blur.

Meeting Gertrude and being given the opportunity to time travel certainly appealed to her. She was ready to take a chance on a new beginning.

I enjoyed this book very much but I found some of the terminology in the book was not correct some of the words used in the book were not words that would be used in the 13th century. The definition for the laymen or even a doctor at that time pelvis that was not a word used also the word rogue was not used. Rogue came into use probably in the 1500s. I also thought drinking almond milk at this time was not correct. I was wrong it was consumed. First it was something shared by the wealthy and second and obviously where did the Highlanders get almonds.

All in all I have to say I did love the story and the whole concept of time travel has always been my favorite.

Another of those novels in which a woman timetravels to Scotland ("Outlander" set a trend). This time even further: to the 12th century.

The beginning is interesting. How to practice medicine with modern knowledge but Dark Ages material. You can notice the writer has a medical background. When you cannot perform a Ceasarian what other options are left?

The second half however is a bit bland. I rather had seen a bit more background and soulsearching. As for instance in Outlander where the real history and politics of the period are described.

Not the deepest story but a nice one to read on a plane (train / bus) and I had hours to fill in transpor

When I began this I wasn't sure if it would be much romance with too much sex. However, it was okay. There were very few swear words and it wasn't filled with sex scenes all the way through it. There was some but that could either be read or skipped over. The story itself was pretty good. The main character, Dr. Elizabeth Quinn, ended up in 13th century Scotland. She found fulfillment as a doctor and a person in the community there. Now I have to see what happened to the person (Elsie) whose soul shifted into the body Elizabeth left behind in the 21 century. I look forward to seeing how Elsie made the transition from the 1200's to the 2000's.

Ambas cosas no tienen ningún sentido.

En cualquier caso, es amena, se hace corta y como la primera parte sirve para distraerte y meterte quizás en algo más denso y complejo.

Dr. Elizabeth Quinn accepts the pocket watch from Gertrude but has an accident on the way home that throws her into the past early. She finds herself in Elsie's body and is taken to help a woman who has trouble staying pregnant in the 1200's in Scotland. Elizabeth is likely the only one who could help the lady carry a baby to term. Along the way she falls in love and stays in the past.

The Midwife was an unexpected read for me and I'm so glad I chose it! I absolutely adored this book and can't wait to dive into the next stories! The banter between Sir Cade and Elsie is perfection!!! And I'm ready and willing to accept a Gertrude bargain whenever she is ready to make an appearance ; )
