“ I suddenly realized that there was still one person in this world who was willing to risk her life for a disabled man like me. But that person was stupid to death, so I thought again, if I just died like this, what would happen to her?

''To be treated like a treasure by a useless man, was still useless. So I told myself, I must rise up, become a man standing above men. Even though I was only half a man now, I had to raise her up."
Second Master answered in a trembling voice, "That I didn't remember you."

Second Master pulled my hand and placed it on his chest. His hot tears rolled onto my wrist and I felt like my heart was being pressed so unbearable that I wanted to die. "Master is most regretful that I did not remember you.”
Damn, this is a gem.

This is the story of the second son of a really rich family who spent all of his time being playful, lustful, incompetent and arrogant. When the family meets disaster and the household falls apart, his family instantly loses their wealth and becomes destitute, while the second master loses both his leg.

Left with nothing, he reflects on his life and feels like there is no more meaning and intents to not live anymore. But one day, he suddenly realizes there is still one more person in this world who was willing to risk her life for a disabled man like him and therefore he decides he must rise up to pay for the loyalty and dedication of the said person.

Who is she?

Our female lead, the only servant of the family who didn't leave the mansion and stayed back to take care of her ''master''.

Who used to be second master's venting bag and was called 'little monkey' and was kicked by the second master because of his terrible temper.

Who after the attack, took after him, applied medicine and earned money to feed him.

Who dedicated herself to him.

So you see, this is the story of a man redeeming himself in the eye of the people he mistreated. Also a story of loyalty, second chances, and perseverance. Both of the main characters are sweet and it is nice to read about them growing together and giving each other strength.

Why 4 stars?
☑ A sweet and endearing story
☑ Happy ending
☑ Awesome character development for both of the characters
☑ Good use of the 'disability' in the story
☑ The moral messages such as you can always redeem yourself and you should never give up.

All the time I was reading this, I was like;

I super duper love this story. Short but sweet and at moments really intense indeed. But this didn't fail to show what pure love is. It is a very simple and clean type of love, so pure that it makes me feel that as this beautiful fictional story was created, maybe, just maybe in my wishful thinking, that such love can exist in real life.

I like the way the author gave the characters life, with their own personalities and quirks, making it easy to differentiate which character was currently speaking or doing the action. I also liked how instead of simply saying the words outright, the author chose to tell the actions by describing the minute expressions and mannerisms of the characters.

Why only 4 stars, then?

Two things;

One; there were moments I felt like the female lead was a bit too dense for my tastes.

Two; The male lead is such an asshole at the beginning and after he loses his legs everything is forgiven suddenly?!

The past him was truly horrible, there was nothing to like about him!!! And he saw her for so many years, used her as a punch-bag...how could you possibly forget? No matter how insignificant she was, after so many years of seeing her and interacting with her, it's biologically impossible to forget.

The way he ended up being so easily forgiven (yes, I still think the male lead got better than he deserved) was a teeny tiny bit irritating.

Overall;
Even though it's only 7 chapters, the writer did so well in creating characters that are endearing and go through strong character development. Such a simple but sweet story. Especially the emotional payoff in the end.

Recommended?

Words can't describe how much I adore this book.

One of the best! A fleeting story that managed to once again capture me and warm my heart despite such little time it took to read it.

It's not love at first sight, the FL isn't a beautiful noble mistress nor is the ML a caring, dependable and hard-working son. It takes years and many hardships for them to grow. This leads to a kind of love that even I completely envy. Absolute recommend!

"Do you know what I regret most in this life?"

I forcefully shook my head, I did not know, I did not know anything. Second Master answered in a trembling voice, "That I didn't remember you."

For such a short story it sure made me feel a whole range of emotions! I actually didn't really like the first two chapters, the ML was just too unbearable, but it actually made the later chapters that much sweeter, seeing the wonderful changes to his character. The MC was really funny too, I especially liked how determined she was. Overall a really nice and sweet romantic story.

A refreshing short story. The plot line isn't clique and doesn't lose to stories with bigger chapters at all.

Our MC-FL (the narrator) isn't dumb or stupid (she gives the impression though). She is just someone without any ambition unlike most strong FLs. And I won't judge that, because of course everyone is different. She may be selflessly loyal but she knows how to protect herself, a bit slow but not dumb. In historical times, in the position that FL was in, I think what she did perfectly made sense.

Our ML (Yang Yi Qi) got the most attention, but I ain't complaining. At first, you'll find him to be those intolerable second-generation scum. But throughout the story, the growth was real. For what he did, he got enough of a punishment in my opinion. So, you can't really judge him either. Some people were badmouthing the ML to the end of the world in novelupdates. I'll have to defend him for that. If you are telling me that he's the ultimate scum then I can list to you various Chinese, Korean, even wattpad novel where the ML treats FL like a trash, sleeps with other woman like he can't keep it in his pants, rapes FL like it's his right and blames it all on his dark and oh so *traumatic* childhood to gain sympathy cards (Anyway this is my rant, don't get offended by that).

While reading this, you'll first feel bitter and then sweet and at the end, you'll smile, satisfied. Oh no, I wasn't satisfied, I wanted more interaction between ML and FL. (Fluffy and cute interaction between ML and FL is just the guilty pleasure I seek)

P.S:

You can't expect here to see an independent but strong FL. If you are, then skip it already. I mostly like strong and badass FLs but still you can't help but love our monkey. What happened with ML, you can only sigh and say, karma is real.

If you want a refreshing quick read then go for it! You won't regret it, I tell you! ^_^

omfg 😹☠️ c5 whyyyyyyy did he not give her a better name when he asked her/she told him her name was Monkey earlier?!?!!? >>>.<<<

So I read it here https://puretl.com/our-second-master/c1

And sometimes https://lotusscribe.com/novel/our-sec... to see the difference but dude C7 was a MESS/so badly translated.

This is not an easy read - and there really isn't any sweetness between our leads ... but what a relationship. [Also dude what's up with the EXCESSIVELY clueless FLs like ... they make me look like a romantic genius.]
But how did he not remember her AT ALL like my guy there was only one person you abused.
I did wonder why she stayed with him when everyone left. That whole "I'm a maid" was INGRAINED in her I guess, naturally. And then of course you kinda get the sense she was "love at first sight" with him - and didn't mind it was one sided. True love brain to the Nth degree.
It was satisfying though our dear girl is so derpy she actually leaves. (And I appreciate ML let her go too. Heh the housekeeper is the one who brought her back...) and ML *keeps* her.

He never TOLD her anything till the end so how was she supposed to know?
I love though how he's like "I did all this for you." Which he did <3
It was also nice knowing he'd developed feelings for her two years and had been working quietly and steadily for her. And our delightful clueless girl. Heh.

Truly a heart of gold I could never be so good FL though.

Not mad I read it, but glad I read a bunch of reviews before reading it.

My first ever translated-from-Chinese novel! Read on December 2017.
This is a must read for all romance readers!
I can't even comprehend how much I love this read!!!

This is a web novel, it's been translated by fans on novelupdates.

I won't even try to summarize this book because it's so, so short! You could read this in an hour if you savor it, but if you're a fast reader, it's going to be a commuting read. As in, one commuting ride read😅

Beware though, if you're not familiar with Chinese culture, never read any Chinese novels before, and never watch anything Chinese.. This is going to be confusing for the first two chapters. I literally read the first two chapters twice because, yes, my knowledge about China was nonexistent. But guess what? After finishing this novel, I keep reading more and more Chinese novels, that's how good this novel is!

Cerita yang sangat menarik. Walaupun pendek (hanya 7 chapter) tapi memang terbaik. Tanpa sedar air mata menitis bukan sebab sedih tapi terharu. Kisah percintaan yang sangat indah dan mengharukan. Kepada mereka yang hati mudah menitis air mata sila sedia tisu.

Jalan cerita yang menarik. kalau ada 10 bintang aku bagi 10 bintang.

I've seen this author on a few lists of recommended books before, and I picked up this super short story (7 chapters) on a whim. This was enjoyable. The two main characters start out in quite a bad place (socially) and the love interest levels up by the end. The heroine is kind of funny with how oblivious she is, and the story was very sweet.

"Trên đời quý nhất không phải núi vàng núi bạc, mà là lãng tử quay đầu"
Đối với Nhị gia tàn phế, quay đầu không phải để chấn hưng gia tộc, lấy lại tài sản ruộng vườn mà là "Dù chỉ còn một nửa, ta cũng phải nâng nàng lên cao".

Literally one of the best romance Webnovels I've read!! The second master had such a HUGE redemption arc, that there's no way you don't end up loving him!! And the heroine?? SHE'S A TREASURE!!

Please, if you have the time, read this!! It's REALLY worth it!!

It is a life lesson told in 7 chapters by the lowly plain looking maid of the second master. Worth reading for the fairy tale ending.

Short, but unforgettable, and so beautifully written.

The characters are realistic for the historical period, I definitely would not approve of the male lead’s past actions in a modern day setting, but in the norms of that time period & no extraordinary time travelling modern thinking protagonist, the characters act in the manner befitting the societal attitudes of that time. So I don’t recommend for those who prefer to impose modern norms onto characters.
