USA Today bestselling author Mary E. Twomey lives in Michigan with her three adorable children. She enjoys reading, writing, vegetarian cooking, and telling her children fantastic stories about wombats.
While she loves writing fantasy, dystopian, and paranormal tales for her readers, Mary also writes romance under the name Tuesday Embers.
I really love this series. The characters are fantastic. Lucy makes me laugh. She's hilarious. It gets annoying at times when she cries so much but at the same time,,, I get it. The twist with her love life was great.
Lucy has lost her twin brother Linus and parents, and then finds out she’s connected to Undraland, a place of mythological beings. With her guardian gnome, Jens, she becomes part of a group on a quest to thwart the evil plans of the siren queen Pesta. Everything Lucy’s known is gone, except for her “Uncle Rick” who turns out to be an influential elf named Alric. Lucy, Jens, and Alric are joined by other representatives of Undraland’s races to form a team to destroy the portals between the countries of Undraland and Pesta’s Land of Be. The three books in this set are not stand alone novels. In fact, they are really just Parts 1, 2 & 3. They all, including the 3rd one, end in a cliffhanger. For that reason, I would have stopped reading after the first book had it not been part of a boxed set. I did enjoy the characters though. They are well- developed, some more than others. Lucy is an enjoyable main character. She has the vulnerability that you would expect of a human young adult surrounded by magical people - she’s often afraid and confused, but she shows her strength of character by trying to overcome it. Her banter with Jens was fun, at least in the beginning, but by the third book, they spent so much time apart. Her only connection to her old life is Alric, but he fails to properly prepare her for the different cultures in Undraland. No one helps her know what to expect, and then they get frustrated when she makes mistakes.
There just seems to always be hardship for Lucy, and it looks like the next 6 books are more of the same. You expect conflict and trials in a book, but this poor girl has so many horrible things happen to her, you wonder how much more she can take. Instead of looking forward to what happens next, I’ve started dreading what new hell will be inflicted on her. There are several times when characters do things that don’t make sense for them - they are plot devices that just make no sense for the characters. I hate love triangles, and it seems like one is being developed. Lucy and Jens verbally sparred in the beginning, but Foss hated Lucy and was cruel and violent with her. I’ve enjoyed much of the story and characters, but am becoming frustrated with the drawn-out pace and the out-of-character actions. As much as I’ve enjoyed the story, I think that this is where I stop reading. Lucy has already had to deal with so many horrors, death, violence, and I’m just not interested in six more books this convoluted plot.
Despite the title, it's not a retelling of Alice in Wonderland, which is a huge bonus. In general, the books are a very easily followed plotline with charismatic characters that come off the pages. Not my favorite, but I definitely bought the next two sets!
*My only real quarrel with the storyline is the dynamic between Jens and Lucy in the first volume. It borders on a VERY TOXIC relationship, and I just can not stand that. Lucy's interactions with the other characters are very on point for her personality but the dissonance between that and her childish and reactionary personality with Jens absolutely almost stopped me from continuing on, but I'm so happy I did. Nøkken and Fossegrim were AMAZING and I absolutely loved the progression Lucy and Foss make, as well as the very nuanced changes at very specific times.
I love it! But knowing at the end of this boxset is a cliffy is killing me! This lighter version of Lord of the Ring, Fellowship of the Ring , i love every second of the journey. Jen and Lucy chemistry is off the chart sweet. Their banters are funny and cute with familiarity of old couple. Fos is one giant ahole turn mindblowingly to heart stopping jock. Britta and Jeremy is just adorable. Tor and Nik grows on me. Mace is having a crush on his new found sister. Uncle Rik is a colour version of Gandalf the grey. And all of them with growing chemistry and fellowship in their journey to destroy Pesta is one story i could live again and again
A huge chunk of the first book I was reading along and heavily confused.. no fault of the book, it just took a while for me to wrap my head around it because what is Lucy? Then all the introduced ‘fellowship’ crewmates was a lot to take on and they all blurred together. As I progressed through the 3 books, I found I really was enjoying the story, the adventure and the character growth - especially in a certain someone. Despite all the tragedy and wickedness that seems to follow, it gives me ‘feel good’ vibes and I’m here for it. I will for sure be buying the rest of the series and doing a binge read of them when I’m able.
invisible people, suns large enough to fill half the sky, two worlds to navigate, species upon species to make and manage, shades of evil and shades of good, heroes all, creatures so vile nightmares would reject them, and one human being, but is she really? or the dreamstuff romance that can't be denied -by anyone -and very little time for the disparate band of Undra land brothers and sisters to stop the cursemaker of all. enough? nope. there's more after these!
I'm in love with this series. It has everything I won't in a story and some. The way it's written make it feel like your right there fighting with the characters. The characters themselves feel so real and complex , you can't not relate to them. I really love and can't wait to read more.
Read the first three books in this 9 book series in one week. I couldn’t put it down. I fell for the characters and had so many emotions throughout the books. Incredibly well written. I can’t wait to get the remaining books and read the entire series. Heartwarming and heartbreaking. Fully obsessed.
I haven't been able to put down the kindle! such a captivating story! Books are meant to be an adventure and this series has been an adventure I wont forget! Already purchased the remaining books and I'm off to read #4 now!
I don't know where I would begin talking about these three books. I had a hard time putting down and when I did I needed to know what was going on. I need to know what's going to happen to Jens in Mare. What is Lucy going to do next.
I chose this book because of a push on BookTok. I was not disappointed. The series gives a hint of Lord of the Rings to it, (which I love!), but I fell in love with the author’s writing style and the characters. I’m only three books into the series, but it’s been a great time so far.
The main character isn't likeable and neither are most of the others. The bantering is lacking and juvenile. Didn't get half way through the first book.
Loved them. Great read. Captivating storyline. Great characters and fabulous dynamic between the two main.characters. Can't wait to read the.next ones.
This box set is the first three books of a nine book series. I'm glad I got it on sale because I tired of it quickly. Lucy finds that her family were escapees from an alternative world and that the family has a "guardian Gnome". Jens has the ability to turn invisible so that no one can see him. Apparently Lucy has a famous relic that her parents stole as they escaped. She must now return to Undraland to help take down the evil witch who had her entire family killed. This set just covers Lucy's introduction to the world, the discovery of an older brother she never knew existed (he's very heavily hinted at as a possible bad guy) and the next two books were their adventures in the next two lands closing the witches access. The" fellowship "that's been put together is very much an echo of The Fellowship the Ring. And at $8.99 each for the next two box sets I'm not Interested enough to finish the journey and Lucy and Jens falling in love. Yeah, yeah, enough of the make out sessions, let's move this along.

Five star writing. Epic plot. Totally enthralling.
How that fifth star was lost: -Assuming that everyone is straight, mere pages into Undraland. It was a massive mar on an otherwise hilarious & awesome book. -Creating a singular Queer character - gay, of course, nothing more complex/more marginalised - which is promptly & horribly killed. -Making too big a deal about Lucy being "Pure". PURE?! Seriously? What fathomable reason is there to be so concerned about whether Lucy has been to bed with someone? It's a bit off putting, honestly. It's the only seriously unbelievable aspect of her character. -Henry Mancini. That was a loooooooooow blow.
Tor the Mighty went a little too quickly, & it felt a little forced, like he was no longer fun to write, so let's off him. The overall tone is all Sass, with some danger, some common sense, a lot of luck, & a good dollop of Righteous Mission. It's pretty great. I will absolutely encourage friends to read these books. I wanted so, so badly to give that fifth star. But I couldn't do it in good conscience. Maybe the next instalment will make the mark!
Previously I received a free copy of Undraland and reviewed it and even though I had my reservations about this series I couldn't stop reading it. So when I went to buy book 2 I saw book 1-3 bundled and snapped it up. And yes I will continue until I have read all 9 books in this series. Problem is I am not that big of a fan. Kinda have insta love going on, in a way. After everything Lucy only has minor meltdowns. She is taking everything in stride. And the lingo...gank? Rip tide? Or was it rip cord? Can't remember. Let's not forget liking the kisses of men who abuse you. Sheesh. I also feel there are unnecessary tangents. And narrative skips. Or missing pieces. Hence the trainwreck I just can't stop looking at. For some reason I need to know what happens.
Undraland books 1 thru 3 was an amazing emotional roller coaster ride. I laughed, cried, and became angry at parts of the books. It's very addictive. I purchased the next bundle books 4 thru 6 immediately after finishing the first bundle.
I love Mary E. Twomey's writing style and wit. Undraland is a beautiful dangerous land filled with surprise and heartbreak. Unexpected twists and hard to swallow turns. I'm sure you'll quickly fall in love as well.
