Novellas... often a dirty word when it comes to writing and publishing. The question is, why?
Ayala presents a really good argument as to why novellas are important and are on the upswing with today's social media obsessed reader. She presents a number of excellent reasons as to why novellas work with today's reader and how they benefit most self published authors.
I have to say I was impressed. Very impressed.
Unlike a lot of 'how to' books, Ayala breaks down the formulaic way a lot of romances are written (and out of most books, Romances generally run by formulas) and presents them to the reader. This helps a number of ways, especially to anyone breaking into the scene and wanting a bit of a hand coming up with how to properly pace a story.
She also marks down a lot of the pitfalls romance writers come across, though as this is towards the end of the book, it felt rushed and is more of a list rather than an actual discussion about the pitfalls themselves.
In the end, this was a fantastic book on novellas, and has given me a lot to think on. It's one of the few ebooks where I used the highlight feature of my Kobo and bookmarked pages to revisit when I am tackling my own novella projects. If you are interested in writing a novella, this book is for you!!
Have you ever purchased a book and then let it fall behind in your reading queue? Of course you have. Me too. That's exactly what I did with Rachelle Ayala's gem, Love Stories: Writing a Romance Novella in Thirty Days or Less. Even after I began reading it and saw how this gifted romance novelist was going to make my writing life ridiculously simple--and organized--I let myself get off track with other pursuits.
I picked it up again yesterday and started from the beginning, reading and making notes. Then I realized that making notes was useless. Because Ms. Ayala has already condensed her wisdom to the point where I simply want to keep this book up on my computer as I write my novella.
My suggestion? Buy it, read it, incorporate its advice into your personal creative pattern. You will be so very happy you did.
I have started so many romance stories, but not finished them. I also find the shorter length of story is better suited to my style of writing.
This book has some useful information for those who are interested in writing a romance novella, and some of the tips can be applied to longer stories too.
If you are wanting to write a romance novella, this is a good book to read.
A solid addition to my writing resource shelf; will refer to it time and again. I found it more helpful for basic novel writing information rather than focused specifically on novellas. The “recipe” for writing a novella within thirty days was quite simple: basically, produce enough words to hit your writing goal every day.
