Nicely written with few editing glitches--if a bit pedestrian--this story falls under Christian fiction without beating the reader about the head and shoulders with a Bible. It includes treachery, enormous leaps to (wrong) conclusions, and natural disasters--just about everything except the proverbial kitchen sink--in order to ratchet up the drama. However, it doesn't quite work to alleviate the mildly banal storytelling and cloying sweetness. I was sufficiently invested in the story to read the first in the 3-book volume, but not enough to read the other two books.
DNF, stopped at page 17. Too much modern terms and modern ways of speaking and behavior. They wouldn’t speak or act like that back then. Calling someone a “jerk” didn’t start until the mid 1930s! The book is set in the late 1800s. No man would stand in his underwear in front of his elderly aunt back then. No matter if she raised him or not. He wouldn’t have used “crap” causally in front of her either! It wasn’t done! Prostitution is referred to by the Sheriff as being “illegal”, but the book is set in the 1800s when it was legal. It wasn’t illegal until 1910 (though the federal law was more about sex trafficking), and even then it was still in the kind of “flexible” stage until after WW1. They didn’t really shut things down until then. Also the aunt couldn’t cook? That’s pretty much all women did back then: cook, bake, clean, sew, have and raise babies. Since she couldn’t cook the uncle did and taught the Sheriff? No, neither of them would have had the time to cook for the family. They had to be out, being the breadwinners of the family. It wasn’t like you could just pour a quick bowl of cereal in the morning back then, or zap something in the microwave for lunch, or throw a frozen pizza in the oven. No, it took REAL cooking that took hours as they had wood stoves and had to make everything from scratch. She would have had to have known how to cook. And it’s doubtful he would have been crocheting. Men didn’t do those sort of things back then. It’s rare a man would do it now. And the fact he was doing it in a saloon in front of everyone? And everyone accepted it?! Nope!!! I’m only on page 17 and couldn’t take all these things!
I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobooks of this series.
I have to acknowledge the very comical and realistic characters portrayed by the narrator, through the voice characteristics of each person encountered. It adds so much to the an already charming collection of stories.
Book 1 Montana Rescue
It's suggested that the sheriff should set the example, and in doing so, save the town, by finding a mail order bride. There's drama, even before the prospective bride arrives, and it doesn't stop there. There's interference from sinister people, wanting to revel in other people's misery. However, there is a HEA in this first episode.
Book 2 Montana Bargain
Dr Wu was the next in line to try the Mail order advertising for his dream bride. With a little help, the ad for a female doctor, willing to meet certain requirements was placed. Luckily, Erin replied wanting a practice of her own, as she hadn't had any joy in gaining employment, even after gaining her doctor's qualifications. It's a grand story, with the ups and downs of any two people getting to know each other.
Book 3 Montana Adventure
Again we see an advertisement placed for a would be bride, this time for Billy, the artist and part owner in the sheep farm. However, Billy is called on an urgent errand, with Lucky, before his potential bride arrives. Drama and emotional rollercoaster ensues, as their errand turns out differently to what they expected. Meanwhile, Shadow falls to the studious tracking of the sheriff, who reacts differently to what you would expect. Overall an engaging yarn, that shares the emotional feelings of those that call Echo Valley home.
This book introduced me to some amazing characters with entertaining stories. First there is Josie and Evan, his feisty aunt Edna, and his bounty hunter friend Thad. Then we get the heartwarming story of Nina and Billy with some incredible insight to dealing with racial prejudice. Of course Erin and Win, doctor and vet respectively, and his pet burro offer some great moments. Then there is Lucky, the Irishman, his son Otto and his journey with his Cheyenne wife Avasa and Wild Wind, his Cheyenne friend. I was not surprised by Marvin Earnest and his twin brother Shadow who was locked in a cage until age sixteen. There is so many characters in this book that you are constantly eagerly awaiting for each of their next adventure or drama.
I read the first three books but I had trouble getting past all of the technical editing issues. Typos and missing words made it difficult to read some sentences. This series needed a good read through before being released. That annoys the hell out of me and normally I would stop reading the book but the storylines were good. I admit to some eye rolling on my part but there were a lot of parts that sucked me in. That being said, I will continue to read through the rest of the books. I need to see what happens to the bad guys turned good(?) and if it sticks.
This is a refreshing read. Echo Canyon is a town where the population is more guys than women. So they get the idea if the sheriff advertisements for a mail order bride other men will do the same. Evan reluctantly agrees and creates an ad which his Aunt (who is a riot) recreates his ad. Than a friend has her help create an ad for him and the town (which needs a doctor) and the last book the youngest member of this group has an ad placed but that takes an interesting detour. Throw into this mix a character who everyone hates(but you won't or at least I didn't) You have a great series
I don't remember if I have read any of Linda Bridey's books before because I read so many books by so many different authors, I can't remember them all!
These 3 books are a genuine pleasure to read. After I read a dark novel I like to read one that is clean and soft. Just like these stories! She wrote about love and the pitfalls involved with it. She wrote about the horror of prejudice in the 1800s which was not that much different from prejudice in 2019. But, she wrote about love conquering all!
This author's works are good reading for teens to centurians!
Wonderful. Just read the box set 1-3 of Echo Canyon Brides by Linda and they was so good wish I could also get the next box set 4-6 and get it free. Also would like to see what happen in the future of Marvin. Does Linda have this one out too cause I loved reading about all the characters in the first books 1-4
I loved reading about all the characters and what happen to them in box set 1-3. Want to read the next box set on the rest of the characters that was in this 1-3 box set which is 4-6. Only one I see not showing his future is on Marvin. Hope you let us know what happen to him too!
Echo Canyon brides books 1 through 3 are great stories about 3 mail order brides in the west. It tells some of the difficulties that women in the west had to endure to make a new life. Each character of the book has a history and I love how they all meld together to create such great stories. I would highly recommend this series to anyone who loves western romances as its a book that catches your attention and is hard to put down.
I really enjoyed this series of 3 books it makes the second series The writer that I have read. What I like best about the book was it continued on like a story with the same people so that you know what's going on in everybody's life It was very interesting to see it Twist and turns that the story took. And in the end you got to read what happened to everybody that you have followed in the 3 books I would recommend it to anybody. I would put Linda bridley Down as 1 of my favorite authors.
I am really enjoying this series. The characters are so believable and I feel almost like they are real people, not just characters in a story. The characters are well drawn with all their quirks and foibles and their strengths and weaknesses shown. I like how the bad guys get what is coming to them and how the Earnest brothers slowly grow and change. I recommend these books to anyone who likes historical and or mail order bride stories.
I harvested these stories before. They are excellent. They really make you think that you are back in that time period. Such characters. They mesh well together. Thank you for showing me these books again.
The stories all fit together, and I like that they run consecutively throughout the books. I like to be able to find out what happened to all the characters in the books.
Somehow, I have managed to collect several of Linda Bridey's box sets of western romance novels. After a particularly bad siege of flu, I wanted to read something different, something that I could pick up as I felt like it. This series of books turned out to be just right. I am feeling better, I met some interesting characters, and managed to write a review, also.
I don't know how realistic this is. I could imagine a place like this. Good stories, good characters and entertaining. The problem is that although each couple has their own book the story doesn't end there. It continues like a soap opera. All the characters are involved in this small town and to find out what happens to each of them you have to keep reading. I think there are 11?.....Enjoyed.
This book is so truly catholic! The word means encompassing all - universal. The love of all these men and women for one another, the forgiveness and understanding needed by all in the face of truly horrible happenings, is what human beings should be to each other. I love the diversity of people and races and creeds that choose to love and appreciate each other as blessings. Absolutely enjoyed this beautiful journey. Thank you.
Found the first 3 books entertaining. I did wish that the heritage & past of the Chinese character was included instead of briefly stated. There should have been language alterations. The Irish man was given a cultural accent & phrases. The same should have occurred for those learning English as a 2nd language: the Indian (full blooded Native American) & the white woman who was a captive, primarily raised by Indian Tribes. Their learning should have been slower.
A fabulous read filled with pain, heartache and love.
I loved the first 3 books of Echo Canyon. I felt as though I lived with all the characters. The stories were enthralling and I became part of the community. I felt the heartache that Marvin and Shadow went through. Having their father treat them so differently. I loved Evan as the sheriff. I am looking forward to the next books and hope they are just as spellbinding. Love your work Linda 💜
Each story is unique, the characters are very likeable. I have no trouble visually seeing the settings and feel I g the emotions of the people. I have laughed and cried right along with these characters. I am definitely a Linda Bridey new fan!
What a fun light hearted reading! Linda keeps the reader engaged by setting up the next scene and she has you falling in love with the story and characters. Makes you want to go to Echo Canyon, sit a spell at Spikes and toss one back. Thanks for a fun set of books to read Ms Bridey.
I did not enjoy these books anywhere as much as the first ones I read none of these stories were finished so I will not buy any more the other ones made me cry and laugh , but these were like reading one book and nothing got finished so I only gave it two star's Susan zyla
This book keeps you entertained and tells the stories of how a small Western town was built up through mail order brides. Good clean romance pervails and you can see how stamping out evil keeps a community growing! We just have to keep fighting for good, with God on our side we can rise above evil people.
HISTORICAL SAGA LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER READ BEFORE!!!
This box set is just........ AMAZING There is romance, adventure and mystery!!! I could not put these books down.
I could smell, see and touch each and every character. The brothers Earnest is both villains that you can't help feeling sorry for and love at the same time. Gosh I can only say these books must be read!!!!
I only partial enjoyed these books 1-3. They all could use some serious proofreading! This made for some rough reading where I had to go back and reread portions. While I know there was a lot of violence back then I didn’t enjoy any of Shadows part. Was glad that I had only paid $.99 for this set.
The stories themselves are great, didn't want to put them down. The prose in book one is lacking, but improved in the subsequent books. The author breaks every rule of good writing, time after time. But the characters and wonderful and the plot twists kept me wanting more.
I absolutely love the way all the characters become family. I love the mixture of cultures and mingling of the good and "evil." This series is amazing and I was so very excited to see the next 3 for free. Thank you so much Linda Bridey for your beautiful stories! I look forward to future reading!!!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed the set of three books. The base plot is straightforward. The primary characters of each book are interwoven between all of them, and yet each character shows growth in all of them. The editing is excellent.
I recommend this set,and I will be exploring the next set of Books 4 - 6.
If you are looking for your everyday western..this is not it. Get ready for some twist and turns of excitement . I have been on a binge reading mail order stories and this has been one of the best I have not been bored and cannot wait to read the next group . Oh if you want diversity and handling of tough topics wonderful
Each story continues on with familiar characters we can identify with and enjoy reading about anew. Surprising knowledge about Win’s character comes to light. Seeing Billy mature is great. Seeing how Lucky and Thad handle tough situations and how Evan continues to be a wise and effective sheriff is great.
