Sometimes it's good to be bad...

Charmed is the exciting sequel to the wildly popular Flunked — second in the brand new Fairy Tale Reform School series where the teachers are (former) villains. "Charming fairy-tale fun." —Sarah Mlynowski, author of the New York Times bestselling Whatever After series.

It takes a (mostly) reformed thief to catch a spy. Which is why Gilly Cobbler, Enchantasia's most notorious pickpocket, volunteers to stay locked up at Fairy Tale Reform School...indefinitely. Gilly and her friends may have defeated the Evil Queen and become reluctant heroes, but the battle for Enchantasia has just begun.

Alva, aka The Wicked One who cursed Sleeping Beauty, has declared war on the Princesses, and she wants the students of Fairy Tale Reform School to join her. As her criminal classmates give in to temptation, Gilly goes undercover as a Royal Lady in Waiting (don't laugh) to unmask a spy...before the mole can hand Alva the keys to the kingdom.

Her parents think Gilly the Hero is completely reformed, but sometimes you have to get your hands dirty. Sometimes it's good to be bad...

Hi Goodreads!
I'm Jen Calonita, a MG and YA author who loves what I do because it lets me connect with all of you (and no, I wasn't intending for that to rhyme!).

I've been writing ever since I can remember, but it was fourth grade when I put my "three wishes" for a genie down on paper. They were:
#1. Buy all the Cabbage Patch Kids in the world and give them away for free (because apparently that was how I rolled).
#2. I wanted a mansion, limo, lake house, pool and speed boat (still sounds quite nice).
#3. I wanted to be an author for young readers, which I am!

I love writing novels for teens (and for savvy grown ups who know that YA rocks at any age). My first series was "Secrets of My Hollywood Life" and it followed a teen star named Kaitlin Burke who struggled with the fame game. I have also written the stand-alone novels Sleepaway Girls, it's companion book, Summer State of Mind and the Belles series.

I've been writing middle grade too and am having so much fun with my series Fairy Tale Reform School! The fourth book in this series about a school run by former villains is called Tricked and will be out March 2018. Ever wonder what it would be like if your parents got a job with someone like Taylpr Swift? My other middle grade series, VIP, follows super fan Mackenzie Lowell as she tours with her favorite band, Perfect Storm.

I promise to give book updates here, and on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or my website. I hope I hear from you!

Just when you think that there’s no way a cover could ever be prettier then the one for Flunked, Charmed comes out and it blows your mind with it’s gorgeousness.
Just look how pretty it is!
Soooo pretty….

In this, second installment of Fairy Tale Reform School series, we are back in Enchantasia, the land of all the fairytale cratures.
Our main character, Gilly, is still in Fairy Tale Reform School.
The old cast of students and professors is still almost the same and they are still awesome crew to read about.
There are some changes in school though. The new professor came to fill up the empty place and he is, no other then Jack Blackbeard – the most fearsome pirate.

Charmed was such a charming sequel!
It made me laugh so many times and it gave me so much joy, that it was a pleasure to read.

I am in love with this world.

In my own words, this is a bookish version of Shrek the movie, only without Shrek and his friends.
But the setting is very similar, the sense of humor is also similar and in my opinion, if you’re a fan of Shrek, there’s a great chance you’ll like these books too.

Keep in mind that this is a middle grade series, and therefore, it is mainly aimed for middle graders.
However, I as an adult, loved this book as much as I would if I was younger, if not even more (for the sentimental reasons).
In fact, I came to conclusion that, at this moment, this is my favorite on-going series.
I wish I get to see these books translated into my language one day, so my nieces could read them. I know they would love them.

The story in this novel is interesting, but it was a bit weaker then the one in Flunked because it was a bit predictable.
I didn’t mind predictability at some points, but I wish I was more surprised when the big revelation came. I wasn’t, because I saw it chapters ago.

Charmed shows us Gilly changing and becoming more self-centred person.
At some situations she was really selfish and even hypocrtitical and, since this is a series, I wondered if she’s going to realize that or if her friends would make her see that in this book. You see, because this is a middle grade book, I think it is of huge importance that those kind of realizations and „leasons“ need to be revealed in one book, so kids who read the book learn as much as they can from one book, even if it is a part of the bigger story.
I am happy how it dealt with that aspect.

The novel is written in first person, following Gilly’s point of view.
Between some chapters there are short parts called Happily Ever After Scrolls that are actually newspaper of Enchantasia.
There are also letters that from time to time separate chapters.
At the very end of the book we can read Who’s Who in Enchantasia which explains which fairy tale character has what role in this story.
My only complain is that it would be so much better if that list of characters was at the beggining of the book instead of at the end.

Overall, Charmed was a very good sequel that was just a little behind Flunked quality whise, but it was still a great book.
I think middle graders will enjoy it, but grown ups would also have fun if they give it a try.

The third book in the series, called Tricked, comes out in February 2017 and I can’t wait to grab myself a copy and devour it.

I'm glad Gilly's aloofness was addressed! Still, I can't help wondering whether her remorse was real repentance or if she was only feeling bad because she lost all her friends...

If she thinks that Jocelyn is a mean bully for bullying Maxine, Gilly is just as bad. I mean, Gilly literally blurted that Maxine wasn't actually her friend and that she was just pretending to be nice because she felt bad for Maxine. What real friend even does that?!

Furthermore, the traitor was more than predictable. That was the biggest disappointment. 😔

On the other hand, I really appreciated that all of the characters played a part in the climax of this one, and instead of Gilly taking all the credit, she behaved humbly. This was a super clean read, and I also loved Gilly and Jax together. (More of that, please!) Their gang of a thief, a prince, an ogre, a fairy, a pirate, and a witch was definitely fun!

I would continue the series, but our library system doesn't own audio copies of anything past this one. If they did, I'd still continue it!

*NOTE: This a review of the entire series.*

Even though I'm 27, every now and then I like to read a middle-grade novel. There's something magical about a good middle-grade book. I love getting swept up in a story of good versus evil, where the good guy always wins in the end. It just leaves you with a warm and cozy feeling. I was looking through the books on my Kindle and saw that I owned all of the Fairy Tale Reform School series, and decided to binge read it. I loved it. I flew through the entire series in less than a week.

I think the FTRS series is one of the best middle-grade series I've read recently. It reminded me a lot of Harry Potter, if Harry Potter had fairy tale creatures in it. There are many similarities, such as a constant change of professors, moving hallways, and a school setting. However, FTRS series isn't a Harry Potter copycat. It takes those tropes, and turns them into something completely unique and fun to read about. I loved trying to figure out how the kids were going to solve their problems. Just when I thought the books were getting predictable, it would take a completely different. route and surprise me all over again.

At first, I thought the series should have ended after the second book. I thought that there was no way the author could keep the series interesting without jumping the shark after the way book two ended, but I was completely wrong. She shocked me with how well she continued the story with the addition of Rumplestiltskin and the Stiltskin Squad. It kept things fresh, and got me re-interested in the storyline all over again. The very subtle political references had me cracking up laughing. My only complaint is that books three and four were a bit slow at times, but I think that's because the reader is introduced to so many new characters and plot mechanics. Everything changes, and with that comes a lot of world building.

I loved the FTRS series so much. It's one of my favorite middle-grade series I've ever read. Possibly one of my favorite series in general. I thought Switched was the last book in the series because it's the last book shown on Goodreads, but I hope it isn't. Switched left a lot of unanswered questions. I hope the author writes at least one more book in the series so we can get answers. I am looking forward to the spin-off series, Royal Academy, which comes out in late 2018. I can't wait to immerse myself back into this world, and hopefully see some more of my favorite characters. I recommend this series for anyone who wants to read a great middle-grade series with some fun fairy tale and fantasy elements.

Yet another exciting adventure for Gillian Cobbler and her fairy tale friends! Gilly finds that living up to a hero's reputation is not as easy as it might seem. She has trouble balancing fame and admiration with the precarious and dangerous position she has put herself and her family into. She quickly learns, however, that she can not go it alone if she expects to battle the most evil villains the fairy tale world has ever seen. But who should she trust? And who might betray her?

My nine-year-old daughter and I had a wonderful time reading this book. I guessed the "unexpected twist" quite early, but that did not at all damper the adventurous fun, but rather kept us intrigued and involved until the very end.

We are excited to start the third book in this series, Tricked, today!

In the second story in the Fairy Tale Reform School series, we are back in Enchantasia, the land of all the fairytale characters. Even though Gilly and her friends saved the day in Flunked, they are still students at FTRS. The students are pretty much the same, but with Harlowe (The Evil Queen) in the dungeon, Blackbeard the Pirate has been added to the staff. Unfortuntely, Harlowe escapes with the help of Alva, the wicked fairy and they begin recruiting to take over Enchantasia.

Gilly's character becomes involved with the "Royal Ladies in Waiting" club at the request of Princess Rose. She quickly becomes entranced by Rose, the girls in the group and the hero worship and decides that she will find out on her own, her the mole is at FTRS. All her friends, are upset with her as well as her family. She quickly learns, however, that she can not go it alone if she expects to battle the evil villains in Enchantasia. But who should she trust? Who is the mole? Gilly continues to show her strength and guts, but does have some moments of doubt and issues of self-confidence. With the help and encouragement of her friends, once again, she is able to save the day. This story was a bit more predictable than the first one, but it was still entertaining and interesting. I liked that this book showcased teamwork, co-operation, friendship and humility. Once again this is a great middle grades series showing strong female characters.

Still a really cute book! (Middle Grade). I just felt the plot was a bit more predictable in this one versus the last.

So similar to he first book we are still following Gilly (The cobbler’s daughter) while she attends fairy tale reform school. She teams up with fairies, witches, ogres and pirates to help stop the school from being taken over from bad guys.

I really wish there was a tad bit of romance in these books. I know the characters are 12/13 but can Jax and Gilly kiss already? Sigh.

I thought the story was a touch more predictable than the first book. Like you could see the bad guy and how they were doing it coming from a mile away. I also thought the kids acted a bit younger in this one than the previous one, but I’m sure it is just hormones right?

Anyway still a super cute Middle Grade read!

I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway (thanks btw!) in exchange for an honest review. And here it is:

Very cute and creative! The secret-spy villain was pretty predictable and turned from fairly menacing to kind of pathetic toward the end, but aside from that I really enjoyed this book! The world-building was fun, I loved all the main characters (except maybe the main protagonist, but at least I sympathized with her and she wasn't truly annoying--just in need of a good scolding ).

All in all it was a delightful read, and I'm looking forward to going back and reading Book 1 and getting my hands on Book 3!

This series is consistently a fun, younger middle grade experience. I like the interaction the main character has with the other characters and her journey through this second installment.

I don’t love the shade toward traditionally girly things (pink, different hairstyles, sashes, skirts, etc.). It was giving a feeling that the main character was “not like other girls” but I think that feeling starts to ease toward the end (not entirely).

I don’t foresee a bunch of young boys eager to pick this up, but I think they could very much benefit from the lessons of staying true to oneself and not being afraid to admit a desire for help. I think this would be a fun story to share with the little girls in your life, as it’s a fun romp. I enjoyed the integration of some well-known fairytales and seeing what the characters are up to after the first book!

First off, the cover is amazing! The cover is beautiful!!
I love the concept of this book! I like the group of our characters!
I took off .5 stars because at some times the MC can be annoying at some times
This was a fast-paced book and I already have the 3rd book on hold!
Just beware I might not be as active because of the trips I am taking in July.
Hope you all have a happy and healthy day!!

P.S.
I will not be tracking graphic novels on Goodreads anymore because I read them too quickly!

It was so wonderful returning to Fairy Tale Reform School! If you haven't read it yet, you really should check out the first book in the series Flunked. You can find my review for it on my blog - Reading is Better With Cupcakes.

That being said, since this is the second book in the series, there may be some minor spoilers for the first book within. So read on at your own risk.

Charmed takes off pretty much where Flunked ended. We are still at the Fairy Tale Reform School and we still have most of the same characters. Blackbeard does join the cast as one of the teachers, and one of the princesses does make quite a few more appearances than before, but our core cast of students is still pretty much the same.

However, in Charmed, Gilly is a bit more stuck on herself than she was in the last book. She has let being a "hero" go to her head and sometimes forgets that her friends helped her with what went down in Flunked. Unfortunately this causes a few issues for her. However, it does let us see her grow as a character which is something I appreciate as a reader and a fan of this series.

All in all, Charmed continued on with the fun wonderful world that Jen Calonita created in the first installment. It is fun and full of adventure. And hopefully Jen will be continuing on with this series in a similar matter. I have grown attached to the fun and quirky cast of characters and I want to see them grow more and to see where their adventures take them.

The second book in Jen Calonita's hilarious and delightful Fairy Tale Reform School series, Charmed is just as much fun as its predecessor, Flunked. In this one, mostly reformed thief Gilly Cobbler and her friends must identify and catch a mole at the school who is helping Alva, the evil fairy who cursed Sleeping Beauty, take over the kingdom of Enchantasia.

Gilly does turn a bit unlikable at times in this installment. She becomes quite egotistical over her popularity after her recent heroism and is downright mean to one of her friends. But this is probably realistic at her age and in her situation, and she does come to realize that she needs the help of her friends to thwart Alva's nefarious plot. Also, it seemed to me that the identity of the mole was obvious and that Gilly and her friends should have figured it out sooner.

One delightful addition to the cast of characters is the pirate Blackbeard, who winds up as a teacher at the reform school. At first, substituting for another teacher, he is assigned to teach psychology and how to deal with your feelings (!), but at the end he winds up, more appropriately, in charge of athletics and safety.

I'm happy to see that a third book, Tricked, is on the way. I'm guessing we might meet up with Rumpelstiltskin in this one!

Gosh, I love these books. 10-year-old me had good taste 😂 I’m going to keep audiobooking this series because it’s so fun to listen to when going to bed.

I love all of the characters so much especially Jax and Jocelyn! Also I ship Gilly and Jax but I don’t remember how old they are 😭 I kinda feel like I remember them getting together in one of the later books but I’m not sure 🤷‍♀️

SPOILERS AHEAD>>>>

It drove me insane that they never suspected Rose 😭 Even when I first read these books as a kid I remember wanting to scream at them because like how did they not realize?? Other than that the plot was good, and so was the writing!

<<<
Age Rating - 9+

Language - 1 bloody, God’s name taken in vain maybe once or twice

Romance - None

Violence - Some but nothing descriptive or gory or anything like that

Magic - Quite prevalent in the story, since it’s based off fairy tales, Jocelyn and the Evil Queen are called witches

Other notes - The characters are all in reform school for some sort of crime like stealing, they sneak out of the school once, evade the police, and cause some general mischief

A reformed thief must catch a spy and take down the most wicked sorceress the land has ever seen.

The ragtag team of reluctant heroes are full of fun and charm. The characters are evolving as they are growing, there's rebellion, emotions, relationships all being tested and developed. I loved the constant weaving of fairy tale references that make up the enchanting world of Enchantasia. While Gilly is the MC I really loved how she was not made out to be 'the chosen one' or the special one, with a reality check that working as a team can defeat powerful evil, and that all the characters were as equally as important.

The pacing was rushed at the start with so much going on that it was hard to get into a first but once the action and plot formed it became exciting and engaging. It was very easy to work out who the spy was from the start, but I feel that for younger readers they will enjoy trying to uncover who the mole at Reform School is. Even though it was no surprise to me, I enjoyed that it was a different take on a familiar character, which was a interesting twist.

There are some wholesome morals that make up the story but are delivered in a light-hearted and witty manner.

A charming (see what I did there ;)) sequel this fairy tale romp!

This book really impress me because it talks about magical things. It's also about Gilly who volunteered to go Fairy Tale Reform School. Each of the students including Gilly had their own magic wound, but it has a limit. Gilly is popular in their school for saving the school because Alva the evil princess tries to ruin their school. So Gilly and her friends plan to stop Alva from taking other students. I really like this book like so much because I like how they included princesses and I like princesses ever since I was a kid. I recommend this to all girls because it's kind of intense and their so much things happening.

Even with the last book’s antagonist in prison, there is a mole at FTRS and the Villains are recruiting for the dark side!
Of course Gilly and her friends take it upon themselves to find out who the mole is and try to stop the coup that is forming in secret.

An enjoyable book. The story has a lot of magic and fun adventures. I loved Jen Calonita's style of narrating, and I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series. Now, I want to read all of them. Gilly Cobbler lives in Enchantasia. She is the most talented pickpocket in the whole kingdom. One day she volunteers to stay at the Fairy Reform School. Immediately she makes friends, and she knows that there is a lot more she wants to do for her country. A delightful read.

Charmed is the second book in the Fairy Tail Reform School series by Jen Calonita. I highly recommend reading the first book, Flunked, before reading this one (mainly because it was a fun read). While getting the full picture always makes for a better read, I think new readers could catch up to speed if they want to, but I do not suggest it.

It takes a (mostly) reformed thief to catch a spy. Gilly Cobbler, Enchantasia's most notorious pickpocket, and her friends may have defeated the Evil Queen and become reluctant heroes, but the battle for Enchantasia has just begun. Alva, aka The Wicked One who cursed Sleeping Beauty, has declared war on the Princesses, and she wants the students of Fairy Tale Reform School to join her. As her criminal classmates give in to temptation, Gilly goes undercover as a Royal Lady in Waiting (don't laugh) to unmask a spy before the mole can hand Alva the keys to the kingdom. Dealing with the pros and cons of fame, and the trouble they bring make everything more complicated.

Charmed is a good follow up to Flunked, but not a great one. I liked the amount of conflict about friendship, social expectations, and the issues that being well-known can bring. I like that not every character fit in the mold that they had been cast and proved themselves to be better than assumed. I did not like that I figured out who the mole was so quickly, and how frustrated I was that characters in the book did not catch on. I was annoyed with the main character, but that was because she was acting just like a teenage girl would in her position. Gilly had to balance the good feelings of being admired with the friendships she had forged and her own moral code. She did not always make the right choices, but who does. I did like the realisticness of that, even as it made me cringe more than once. Unfortunately not all the main players got much development, at least not as much as I would have liked. That being said, it was still a good, solid read. However, my expectations and hopes for this series were very high and I think I set myself up for the frustration and disappointment that I felt.

Charmed is a fun sequel, but I do not think it was as good as the first. There was enough action and twists to keep me turning pages, but it did not meet my now high expectations for the author.

Ugh, this book was awful. DNF at page 56. The first book was ok. But this one seems like it was put together hastily. The writing is just terrible. Not one single character has any depth and I just don't like Gilly at all. She is so completely full of herself. When she picks Jax's pocket at the beginning of the book in an attempt to thwart the school's nemesis, she says, "Yeah, I still got it." And for someone who feels uncomfortable being called a hero, she certainly isn't bothered by it enough to change anything about it. And for someone who claims to hate royals so much, she spends a lot of time saying, "look at me, look at me" (a la Julia Stiles in 1o Things I Hate About You). Also, Gilly really loves her family and misses them, blah blah, but she's just too important to go home to them. Who's going to save Enchantasia if Gilly is no longer at school? Only a self-important, shallow tween has the power to save the world from the most evil villain who ever existed, right? And Blackbeard shows up talking in pirate speak that really ended up sounding more Scottish or even, dare I say, Peter from I Love You, Man. And everything that can have an acronym has one. FTRS. HEAS. RLW. Seriously, SMH. Don't get this book for your kids. There is better out there for them.

I received a free copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I lapped up the first in the series, like it was the only water in a huge desert. This book didn't quite live up to it's glory, don't get me wrong it was good and I enjoyed it, just not quite as much as the first.

The problems I had with this were: Gilly had gone from a great fun character to a whiny character that was extremely full of herself. She was mean to people who were meant to be her friends and nice to people who had never before given her the time of day.

The storyline was a little jumbled. It felt a little all over the place. Maybe that was just me, but it didn't feel quite as put together as the first book.

The writing was good and the story moved swiftly and did not linger on boring parts.

There is room for another in the series, not convinced I will read it, but I will see when and if it comes out.

Charmed by Jen Calonita

Charmed is the 2nd book in the series of Fairy Tale Reform School. Gilly Cobbler was hailed as a hero in the first series after she had capture Alva the evil spellcaster. Now Alva has escaped and has taken her sister Halow to gain an army to rule over Enchantria. Gilly and her friends set to find out who the mole is for Alva. Just seems each time they are ahead of the game they fall two steps behind. Gilly is very surprised to find out who the mole is and wishing that she had listened to her friends. Will help arrive before the mole hands her over to Alva.

An editor at Sourcebooks Jabberwocky asked me to read and review this second installment in the Fairy Tale Reform School series. My students enjoyed the first book, Flunked, so I was glad to take Netgalley's ARC copy and give it a go. I was not disappointed. Charmed retains all the fun of the original and brings us back into the world of villains trying to make good in the world. Gilly has stayed on at FTRS and has let her notariety go to her head a bit. We are shocked to see her join the Royal Ladies in Waiting club when she would have never set foot in that group before. Is she really going to turn on her friends for fame? Could it be that she's really working undercover to stop Alva once again? I think Charmed will once again be well-received at school.

At first, I didn't know that this was the 2nd book because I didn't read the 1st book yet. There's this girl named Gilly and she goes to a Fairytale Reform School, her teachers are villains so that means that the students are also bad. Gilly steals from people, that's why her parents sent her there. Alva, who cursed sleeping beauty, wanted the students from Fairytale Reform school to help her in the war she's going to have with the princesses. Gilly had to be like a spy to find out the betrayer. I like this book because it involves fairytales.

This book took me a while to get through. It was partially because the tone was just too young for me, which is strange given that I've enjoyed many novels for children and young adults. The series seems to have come to a natural conclusion, but if I find out that there is a third I probably won't pick it up.

On the positive side, this is an easy to read book with easily understood characters that learn good lessons about honesty and friendship, etc.

This book was a wonderful sequel to the first book called Flunked. I can't wait to read the third Tricked!!!
