Motivational Interviewing (M.I.) has been used since the early 1980s and has proven results in strengthening college students’ own internal motivation to change their high-risk drinking behavior. In Motivational Interviewing for Campus Police, David brings the evidence-based M.I. style that is already being used on campuses across the US to the front lines of alcohol, drug and crime prevention. Campus police officers are on the front lines and can provide a jump start to positive CHANGE for college students. Learn how to… • Elicit CHANGE TALK • Strengthen students’ OWN MOTIVATION to positively change their behavior • CLOSE the TIME GAP between an incident and the student conduct process to increase student learning • Conduct COMMUNITY POLICING with a proven student-centered approach ALL WITH SKILLS YOU ALREADY HAVE!!!
Harmful and illegal alcohol and drug use remains a serious problem on US college campuses. Campus law enforcement plays a critical role in intervening in students' risky behaviors and encouraging students to change. In this brief guide, Mr. Closson introduces motivational interviewing, which is a tried-and-true substance-abuse intervention method, to police officers as an additional technique for interacting with students who drink and use drugs. I recommend all campus police chiefs and officers to read this book and to seek training from motivational interviewing professionals.
A great book on a technique/concept, while becoming common place in the counseling field, has great application to the arena of law enforcement, probation, and/or corrections. This is a must read for any officer familiar with verbal judo, community policing, drug courts, etc. David has captured many of the prominent concepts of motivational interviewing, and provides examples from his time as a campus police officer at Eastern Illinois University!
