Healing Ruby #2

Breaking Matthew

Rate this book
"Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tried you in the furnace of affliction..."

Over four years have passed, and still Matthew Doyle can’t shake the guilt of turning his back on Ruby, the girl who saved his life. As much as he’s tried to avoid returning home to Hanceville, Alabama, he must do so in order to complete his service with the Tennessee Valley Authority, helping to establish electricity throughout the county. But Ruby continues to haunt his dreams, and the only way to move on is to seek her out and make things right.

Tracking Ruby down leads Matthew back to the Calhoun farm, a place full of memories best left buried. But what he finds there will change his life forever. A man is dead. And Ruby Graves stands accused of his murder.

In his quest to prove Ruby’s innocence and atone for his past, Matthew must stand against the most powerful influences in the county, including his own father. But doing so may cost him everything, even his faith in God. Can Matthew rebuild Ruby’s broken trust in him and save her life in return? Or will the trials he faces leave him broken instead?

Breaking Matthew is the sequel to Healing Ruby, a novel set in Depression-era Alabama that explores faith healing, family loyalty, and racial segregation.

Jennifer Westall loves writing Christian fiction as a way of exploring her own faith journey. Saving Grace (2016) is the third installment in the Healing Ruby series, the first of which was inspired by events in the life of her grandmother and explores the mysteries of faith healing. She's also the author of Love's Providence (2012), a contemporary Christian romance novel that navigates the minefield of dating and temptation. She resides in northern Virginia with her husband and two boys, where she homeschools by day and writes by night, thus explaining those pesky bags under her eyes. Readers can connect with her at jenniferhwestall.com or find her on Facebook and Twitter.

A powerfully told story with an ethical conundrum - would you lie to save someone's life? Would you accept being charged with murder for a crime you did not do if you knew the person who is actually guilty probably wouldn't even get a trial because of the colour of their skin. This is a very moving story of self-sacrifice and love and faith that raises hard questions with a depth often not seen in Christian books. Oh and what an ending! I should mention this is Book 2 of the series and is primarily a legal drama, which is quite different to the first book.

Realistic continuation of a great story

Now a few years from the setting of Healing Ruby, Ruby and Matthew are together again. Events of the past collide with new events and changes in their relationship. Alternating between Ruby's voice and Matthew's keeps the story moving and the reader "saying" can't you see what's going on? Then the ending! I'm waiting for number 3.

Sorry to say I didn't like the 2nd book as well as the 1st. All the characters were basically the same as they were 4 years before. Little to no growth, still confused about their feelings. Some characters are actually more evil, including a pastor. Characters vascillated from high faith to bad decisions based on lack of faith...it was just not logical.
Some spoilers below...

What did Ruby ever do to make so many people hate her? She healed some folks, help out a starving black family, and was beat up so badly she nearly died and kept the secret of her attacker...yet everyone wanted to see her hang for a crime she didn't commit. So many people lying about what they saw and so little investigation...even when the death occurred and she was brought in for questioning and she said the guy threw her around, the officer didn't even look at her injuries to see if she was telling the truth. It was just not realistic.

Then her uncles from her mother's side of the family come into the picture and they are just ridiculous. Like cartoon characters or big hillbilly brothers from "Justified", hiding from the law and wanting to hide Ruby in mines...? Meh.

Then to top it off, after touting her faith in God to bring her through it all, she does something so stupid she clearly doesn't trust God at all.

Nope. I'm done...

Well, except I like the way Ms. Westall writes. She has a way with words. A little more work on the plots might be in order.

Oh...and it was a cliff hanger. That almost made me give it two stars. But that would have been mean, and it feels like this is mean enough. Sorry.

Heart-rending book of loyalty and betrayal

After falling in love with Jennifer Westfall’s characters in Healing Ruby, I was thrilled to get to see them again in this second book of the series. The author again deals with the themes of both faith healing and racism.

Ruby, once again chooses the well-being of others over her own safety, but this time it may cost not only her reputation, but her life. Matthew’s faith is tested to its limits, and he has to choose between his family and a promising future or the exasperation of dealing with a girl he doesn’t entirely understand and unpredictable circumstances. He’s still young in his faith and not as experienced in walking with the Lord in intimacy and surrender.

As you identify with the various characters, you may find yourself challenged by the “what ifs” that the author raises: How would I respond in this situation? Would I be willing to hide the truth about what happened and shoulder the blame, enduring unfair accusations and gossip to protect a friend? Would I stick by a friend, even when I disagreed with their choices, trusting them and God to do what’s best? Or would I try to make things happen to force an outcome I think is more fair?

If you enjoy courtroom drama, this novel mostly takes place in that setting. While the time period is pre-WW2, the racial tension is as palpable as in contemporary life, as is the struggle between generations and whether father or son know best. I highly recommend both this book and the series it’s part of to anyone who appreciates deep, soul-searching plot lines with the depth of To Kill a Mockingbird but with the spiritual insight of a gifted Christian author.

Enjoyed this as much as the first in the series (Healing Ruby). Very challenging Christian story with great characters, some to love and some to hate.

his is the exciting second book in the Healing Ruby series.
This story is full of unexpected twists and turns. I literally had no inkling of what was ahead, even to the very last page.

Ruby. A young girl living in the days of the Great Depression, having the firm belief that Negroes should be treated equally with whites. This was very rare in Alabama in those days.

Because of her belief that all people should be treated equally, she faces much difficulty.

Matthew. Her friend. He’s back, and now he is determined to stick up for her, through even the darkest days.

I don’t want to give the story away, so will refrain from sharing more details.
I love the way the author has written this story, it is so very well written. The characters become friends. The setting and details are absolutely fantastic. If you like history, you will get wrapped up and swept away by this story!

I was given a complimentary audio version of this book, all opinions expressed here are my own entirely.

I could not stop turning the pages of this; it was truly gripping. The only slight problem I have is that Ruby, whilst doing so for the best possible reasons, did stick to her lie. On the other hand, the author is not saying that was right - it's just part of the story. And it is a powerful comment on the attitude of racism in the US during that era.
I know some people consider it ends on a cliff hanger, but in a way, it does sort of have an ending. An ending for that period of time. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I will be reading the sequel. The author brings the characters to life. Yes, they make poor decisions, but isn't that something we're all prone to? A really good story.

I did not like this one as much as the first book in the series. I think reading the first book before this one definitely makes the characters more endearing. But the whole story to me seemed so far fetched.
I don't know, cliff hanger at the end. I hate that. I already know I have to buy two more books to get a 'real' ending. I'm not sure I want to do that when this book was not as good as the first one.

Loved, loved, loved as I did Healing Ruby. It is the 2nd book in the Healing Ruby series and as expected it lived up to what I had envisioned. True to form another easy read and I could not wait to turn the pages as I could not put it down. I can hardly wait to start the next one in the series and I believe you will feel the same way. The characters are lovable and believable. Hold on to your hats you will sail through it. Enjoy

This was the continuation of an AMAZING story--it was part 2!! It is very clear that the Lord spoke strongly through this book and it impacted my soul a lot as the last book! It is probably one of only a half a dozen fiction books in my whole life that has impacted me that way. The characters were crafted with a lot of depth and complexity, and the narration of the book was incredible!

Unexpected thriller

What a good book. I am so caught up in the characters that I can't wait to read the next book. There were surprises on every page. Would she be convicted? Would she end up with Matthew? You'll have to read to find out her fate.

Can't put it down

I loved reading this book. I was constantly enthralled with the characters and then situations. I needed to know what was going to happen to them next. Ruby also gives me great inspiration in her unwavering faith.

Another Great Book

What another great book, continuing the story of Ruby and Matthew. Included is the hard time of the Depression years, the KKK, and the sad treatment of black people by so much of the white population. Unable to put down!

Read all 4 of the healing ruby series. Profound and complicated issues that the author chooses to deal with. Very good and well done. At times the circumstances are unbelievable, but it did not take away from the intent and purpose of the story.

Good story

This book was a continuation of the first book in the series. This book deals with Ruby and Matthew and their relationship with eachother. It ends with Ruby being convicted of murder and being sentenced to death by electrocution and her escape from the law.

This was a riveting sequel--I couldn't put it down for an entire day and read late into the night to finish it! Because of Ruby's exceptionally generous heart and willingness to sacrifice herself (even in the most extreme ways) for everyone who needs help, she is targeted to be destroyed. This is the time of the depression where justice is eliminated by people who want to control everyone's lives for their own personal reasons. Matthew wants to help her out of his own gratitude and admiration, but that means he will be cut off from everyone in his life. Things get worse and worse and worse until I couldn't stand it anymore! The ending was a shocker. Riveting book!

I am rating Breaking Matthew five stars because it deserves it, and was a solid 5-star story. However, it feels unfair after rating the first book in the series, Healing Ruby, five stars as well. If Breaking Matthew is a five-star book, then Healing Ruby is a 10-star.

This book, although well-written, interesting, and fun, just couldn't really compare to its predecessor. I'd say it was more typical Christian romantic suspense, a genre I am very familiar with. I love the courtroom scenes, personally, and I really enjoyed having Matthew's perspective. I identify with Matthew more than I do Ruby, so hearing his perspective and passion and humanness was refreshing and fun.

It was good to see Ruby be humbled, matured, and tempered down yet keep her godly faith and integrity. I really appreciated her growth in this book and thought it was a good sequel in terms of character growth and story continuation.

The culmination of two characters' romance was anticlimactic though, which was disappointing. We had been 100% in the girl's POV in the first novel, listening to her heartache and angst, so to miss her reactions, thoughts, relief, and joy in response to her first confession of love and first kiss was disappointing and left me with more of a numb effect than anything.

The plot completely surprised me and did not go as planned one bit, and there was a nice twist.

It was definitely a page turner, like a reverse To Kill a Mockinbird, and kept me up to 4 AM! Although it was much more of an easy read than the first book, Healing Ruby, which left me emotionally raw, moved, and touched in ways that the sequel simply did not.
