The Old Dragon of the Mountain's Christmas

Rate this book
Born prematurely, Christoff wasn’t as big or as strong as his older brother or the other younglings in the village. Unable to fit in, he does the best he can, helping his father and mother on their farm. His life changes when the mountain near their farm awakens. Believing he is the only one who can quiet it, he retreats to the mountain to watch over the village that shunned him.

A hermit for centuries, he dreams of the day he can move on to his next life; a life that he hopes will give him a chance of finding his true mate. He knows his time has come when the mountain begins to tremble again. What he doesn’t expect is a group of younglings who suddenly appear in the hopes of saving a thing called Christmas. When the mountain erupts, he never expects to awaken on a strange planet light years away, or to meet an unusual woman who sees beneath his deformity to the warrior hidden within.

Can the love of a special woman and her family heal Christoff’s tortured soul? Find out what happens when the Goddess Aikaterina gives The Old Dragon his very own special Christmas.

A sweet holiday dragon read

I was so glad that Christoff got his chance at happiness and family. I have skipped around in this series, but I have to say, this was one of my favorites. The characters were so genuine and I couldn’t help but fall in love with them. The hero had lived centuries alone with no interaction from other beings but was still so kind hearted. I especially treasured that he had never known any sort of affection (I love me a virgin hero!) And the heroine......... Where do I even begin?? She's a 60 something years old grandmother but still so full of life. I don’t recall reading about a heroine this old, but I liked it a lot. She was widowed and deserved a 2nd chance at love.

SLIGHT SPOILER:
I also worried about her age thinking, well that’s sad, they won't have many years left together, but that wasn’t the case. She becomes a dragon as well so they have lots and lots of time to cherish one another.

Overall, I really enjoyed this read and will definitely check out more of the series.

A DELICIOUSLY SWEET AND DELIGHTFULLY ENTERTAINING CHRISTMAS STORY !!!
Title: The Old Dragon of the Mountain's Christmas
Series: Dragon Lords of Valdier
Designation: Book Nine of Series, Can Be Read as Standalone Novella, NO Cliffhanger
Author: S.E. Smith
My Rating: FIVE DIVINELY HEARTWARMING STARS*****
I'm totally speechless....I have no idea where to begin writing a review for this story. Nothing I write could ever do justice to this book. After finishing this story, I had to take several minutes to try to compose myself and gather my thoughts but I'm failing miserably so I'll just start by giving a breakdown of the mechanics of the story. The Old Dragon of the Mountain's Christmas is the ninth release in the best-selling Dragon Lords of Valdier Series by S.E. Smith and as the title implies, it is a Christmas story. Although this novella is part of a series, it is my opinion that it can be read as a standalone. The author does a remarkable job of giving the reader the backstory for Christoff, the male protagonist of the story, in the prologue from his point of view. In Chapter One, Smith begins the third person narrative from Christoff's point of view in the present and picks up near the end of A Dragonlings' Magical Christmas, part of Smith's Dragonlings of Valdier spin-off series, which was released by Smith in July 2015. So again, there is ample backstory given to provide the reader with all the details needed to enjoy this story as a standalone. The third person narrative for the entire book is written primarily from the point of view of Christoff, the hero, and Edna, the heroine, but there is also a third person point of view from Aikaterina, another crucial character in the book. Although Aikaterina's actual narrative is short, she is a character we've encountered in several of Smith's previous releases and plays a major role in this story. And, I have no doubt we will see her again and probably very soon. This book is a beautifully written story that will tug on your heartstrings while simultaneously warming the cockles of your heart. It is sweet, passionate, hopeful, imaginative, well crafted, well edited, exceptionally well written and delightfully entertaining. The characters are well developed, fascinating, captivating, engaging and endearing. And so romantic - they will completely capture your heart and leave you breathless. I've been a S.E. Smith fan for several years and have read all the books in her Dragon Lords of Valdier and Dragonlings of Valdier Series as well as quite a few of her other series as well. Once you start, you become addicted for life. She always delivers the goods when she publishes a story and gives the reader a piece of her heart and soul in every single book she writes. She never fails to deliver a magnificently heartwarming tale filled to the brim with marvelous magic, wondrous fantasy, astonishing adventure, heartbreaking drama, agonizing angst and sweet romance. And yes, she even manages to also squeeze in a generous amount humor so be prepared to laugh as well as cry. It would be difficult to give the actual plot of this story without giving spoilers but I will say this....Handsome, courageous older dragon shifter who has experienced great heartache but is willing to sacrifice himself and his happiness for the well-being of others! A beautiful, kindhearted older heroine who lost her first love yet longs to find happiness again-check! A group of young children who have only the best intentions and want to save Christmas-check! A meddlesome goddess who seems to be developing a kind heart-check! And a story that will not only restore your faith in love but melt your winter heart-check! If you believe in miracles and the possibility of finding love and happiness at any age, then this is the story for you. And be prepared - make sure you have a box of tissues handy; you will most surely shed a few tears. I laughed! I cried! I sobbed like a baby! What didn't I like about this story? Not a darn thing! What did I love about this story? Everything! Would I recommend this story? You bet I would! Deliciously cute, completely captivating, intensely emotional and divinely entertaining!

All I can say is WOW! I did not see this coming by a country mile……..Susan, you are a excitingly crafty writer, and I love you for it!

Grab a box of Kleenex, you will need it. Find a comfy chair or couch, grab your favorite beverage and get ready for an adventure! This is one of those books you can’t put down till the very last page…….

First if you have not read “A Dragonlings Magical Christmas: Dragonlings of Valdier Book 1.3”, its ok. But you will miss the all the history that makes this book so very special. So if you read this now please, please go back and read the Dragonlings book, it will make a lot more sense! Second, it would be extremely wise to start at the very beginning, Abducting Abby: Dragon Lords of Valdier Book 1 to REALLY get all the historical flavor, as well as understand the characters and events. Once you do, I am sure you will be as hooked as I am…..

Christoff Anatu, is an older male Dragon Warrior, born prematurely with deformed wings. The mountain near where Christoff was born became his refuge. The mountain listens to him and magically calms when he speaks to it. Edna Grey is a mature, grandmother, who lives on a mountain as well. She has family, friends and a life on her mountain. But one cold Winter afternoon something changes. She looks out over the meadow and sees something she has seen before….

Ok you ask is this a Romance or a Christmas Story? YES to both! It’s a wonderful glitteringly sensual Christmas story between 2 mature adults. Notice I said Mature, neither is ready for the dung heap yet! And they prove it very sensual love scenes that will make your mouth water. But it is so much more! This is also a story of discovery. Christoff and Crystal, Edna’s granddaughter, are both tortured souls seeking answers. Crystal needs to find how to live with her disability just as Christoff does his. Read to discover just how they help each other find the true sense of self-worth!

Susan, I do have one bone to pick with you though. You left us hanging at the end of a Dragonlings Magical Christmas, with Morian getting ready to have her baby. Now when are we readers going to find out what she and Paul have? I Please don’t make us wait too long!!

Overall Rating: 5 Rockin’ ★★★★★

You know that you have found a one in a million book, when you find yourself laughing out loud one minute and then crying the next. In S. E. Smith’s newest book in the Dragon Lords of Valdier series, The Old Dragon’s Christmas your feelings will run a gamut of emotional responses with each turn of the page. Ms. Smith has created a story that touches the heart and soul of the reader while keeping them entertained with her unique insights into life and love mixed in with alien spice.

Christoff has lived his life as an outcast. Loved by his parents, but hated by his brother and the people of his village. Never deemed big enough, or strong enough to be a warrior he is ostracized by those around him. Only his parents see his true worth. The goddess Aikaterina gives him a very special Christmas gift. She gives him a new beginning, a beginning that takes him back to the place where this series all began! Earth!

Edna had a good life, married to a man she loved who gave her a beautiful daughter. Now she is alone, her husband dead and her daughter married with a child of her own. Her best friend Abby had gone to live among the stars with her alien warrior and willed her mountain to Edna. But Edna is not one to sit back and feel sorry for herself, she believes in living life to the fullest. So when she sees something landing in the high meadow, she goes to investigate and meets her new destiny.

Whenever Ms. Smith releases something new, I am right there waiting for it! Her heroes are more than hunkalicious alpha males, they are men of honor and integrity. The females that create are strong and resilient with beautiful souls. Each character in this book plays an interregnal part in the flow and resolution of this remarkable story. This is a perfect addition to my library of must read books!

Heartwarming!!!

I give this review a 5 stars...
The author delivered an unforgettable story yet again. It made me cry, laugh, and just melt my heart. That being different doesn't make you weak or outcast because of the way you look it just makes you stand out more than the rest and just maybe being different means you are, meant to do extraordinary things that the normal norms people expect other to see and do. I read all of Author's books of the Valdier, sarafin, and curizan stories, but Its the Valdier dragon that stand the best. It deliver adventures, love, friendship, humors and this books lived up to my expectations.

I recommend this book to anyone. But should read the Dragonling's Christmas to get the story of Christoff. It's very fascinating.

The Old Dragon of the Mountain's Christmass

Right from the start your tears start running, the courage and love and trust of the younglings for this old dragon bring the tears with no effort. The Goddesses obviously not going to let him die just yet, but to give him his mate in Edna, Abbey's old friend was a stroke of pure genius from one of my favourite authors keep them coming please

HEA alert

There is more than one heart grabbing moment and all the characters are sympathetic (eventually). That the main characters were more like my demographic ( past middle age- with life experiences) was welcome, as well. It was a story about the manifestations of love not just "adult content" although there was that as well; it was a natural part of the story.
Although I have enjoyed every one of the stories in this series I think this is my favorite.

Excellent read!

This story was so wonderful. I felt so bad for sweet christoff. The village and his older brother were so mean because he was different. No matter what his heart was still full of love and was able help Edna's granddaughter. Loved this book. Another great one.

Two worlds collide in a timeless Christmas

Well, I fell in love with The Lords of Valdier series when I read Abducting Abby. I’m still in love with it. Ms. Smith is exceptional at character creation and portrayal. It doesn’t matter the species or the age of her characters they capture and hold your attention while pulling at your heartstrings. Her stories dish up adventure that is out of this world good. The Old Dragon of the Mountain’s Christmas dishes up just a little bit more. When the goddess Aikaterina decides to reward this old dragon with his true mate more than one heart is healed.

I fell in love with the very lovable and mistreated boy, Cristoff. The picture Ms. Smith paints of a boy razzed and bullied because of his deformities and yet very much loved by his parents quickly has you rooting for this underdog. Centuries later he’s still the loveable and selfless character he’s always been even though he has lived as a hermit for all these years. When he rescues the younglings on his mountain he comes to his goddess’s attention. As a reward, she drops him on another mountain on a planet far away… one we are all very familiar with. Take a good guess what happens when a centuries old virgin dragon meets his mate. This old dragon will have you grinning at his antics, crying at his insights and thoughtfulness and totally enthralled with falling in love at any age.

We first met Edna in Abducting Abby. She’s a sixty-something widow, mom, and grandmother. She lives in Abby’s old cabin on Abby’s mountain with her golden retriever Bo and her old mule, Gloria. When she discovers a golden ship in the meadow she’s very aware that she’s in the presence of an alien. With the total equanimity that is Edna, she takes it all in stride and takes him home for the holidays. What she didn’t expect was to be handed a second chance at love. Edna is everything Cristoff needs in his life. Cristoff is everything Edna’s family needs this holiday and perhaps her family is everything he needs to be the air beneath his wings.

The Old Dragon of the Mountain’s Christmas had me smiling, laughing and crying. It’s everything a Christmas story should be. It’s everything I hope love at sixty will be. If you’re looking for a timeless Christmas story then this one is sure to please. I can’t wait for Jaguin’s Love. Ms. Smith just can’t keep up with my demand for more, so I guess I’ll have to grow a little patience. One thing is for sure the wait is always worth it.

Make sure you have your Tissues before reading this. This story was so sweet and sad at times that I was happy that it ended so well. I loved how we finally had a story for Edna after she played such an important part in Abby. Christoff spends centuries up on his mountain trying to keep the volcano from exploding and wiping out the village he grew up in. Caste away as a useless warrior because he was born premature he never got to have a normal life like everyone else. The Dragonlings show up one day to bring the Old dragon of the mountain Christmas so that he doesn't take it away like the (grinch).... He saves several of the young dragonlings that got hurt on the way up the mountain and then things become really interesting. Will he be able to save the children and himself from the mountain that is ready to explode. Will it take the act of a goddess to make all their Christmas wishes come true or will it all end in one firey explosion!!!

Great job!

This story is totally not what I expected. The start had me sobbing, but soon filled with the spirit of Christmas. I have enjoyed all the stories in this series. I plan on re-reading the stories in order again in the future.

Christoff is an outcast in his own village. He eventually becomes the hermit who lives in the mountain overlooking the land and protecting it as well as he can. When a group of younglings come to bring him Christmas presents he is stunned, not knowing what Christmas is, and then as they are rescued he "dies" but he is not dead, he has been sent to another planet where he falls in love with a very special woman. Something that he thought would never happen to him.

While I liked the premise of this story and the characters I did not care for the very detailed sex that occurs between the "human's and the dragons. I prefer to leave the details to my imagination.

There was also a second story that told the Christmas story from the angle of the younglings that went to see Christoff. Again, I really enjoyed the characters. Since this story was more about the younglings the sex was implied when couples talked.

This dang book had me bawling my eyes out on the train ride home. There's a happy ending but it was bittersweet. I'm not sure what the future holds for their families but I hope we get updates.

This was a very nice story about seniors finding love later in life. While Paul & Morian were a middle aged love story, here we have Edna at 65 getting a second chance at love and Cristoff getting his first. It was great catching up on Edna and Cristoff really deserved some happiness. His brother & the townspeople were the worst! I don't blame him for not wanting to deal with him now. But this story was very sweet. Plus Cristoff was someone Edna didn't know she needed and he has a special connection with her granddaughter giving they both were missing limbs.

Really sweet story. Just be prepared to cry your eyes out.

The goddess saves him and sends Christoff to earth a couple days before Christmas to find his true mate Edna. Christoff has led a lonely life all by himself on the mountain. But now he meets Edna and her family. He has had a disability since birth and his dragon can't fly. So when Edna's granddaughter arrives with a prosthetic, they help each other learn about living fuller lives.
This a story about love and acceptance. I love that the older couples get happy ever after too!

This time the story is about a disabled tri species alien who is given a gift of being sent to earth to find his true mate. It covers the feelings of a disabled person the non acceptance etc and then goes on to talk about the difference when someone accepts you for who you are. The human in this book is a friend of the first female from book 1

The Old Dragon of the Mountain

What a fantastic job of storytelling and the greatest Christmas story that I have had the pleasure to read. An ageing dragon finding that disabilities don't mean there isn't someone out there perfect for you. WONDERFUL, and INSPIRING storytelling at its finest.

Loved this story, it’s beautiful, sexy, and filled me with joy reading it. From the over 50’s, I for one thank you Ms. Smith.

I really enjoyed this story. It had so much emphasis on a being to not give up simply because they don't look like everyone else. Yes there are chest fighting and wet eye parts. Thanks for the journey
