Here is a really good book for the artist who wants to develop his or her pencil drawing abilities, whether it's to improve your preliminary sketch work, or to create beautiful pencil drawings complete in their own right. Pencil Drawing Technique s brings together six of today's best artists, all of whom are incredibly fine instructors as well.
The artists show you how to develop your skill and ability in handling pencil technique. Ferdinand Petrie shows you how to handle pencils and produce a controlled variety of lines, values, and textures. Then he shows you exactly how to use these techniques to draw landscapes in a range of styles and compositions.
Rudy De Reyna explains pencil basics, and explores perspective, size relationships, form, and structure. Douglas grave teaches you how to begin drawing portraits by building a drawing step-by-step. Norman Dams and Joe Singer demonstrate how you can use the pencil to produce spectacular drawings of animals. John Blockley and Richard Bolton show you how pencil drawings can capture the essence of a subject and help you work out a plan for painting it. Finally, Bet Borgeson teaches you all the secrets of colored pencil work and demonstrates a whole new dimension.
The book is divided into seven how to handle a pencil, fundamentals of drawing, drawing landscapes, drawing portraits, drawing animals, drawing for watercolors, and handling color pencils. The copious illustrations show in detail how the artists use their techniques. For the artist who uses the pencil, Pencil Drawing Techniques is an an excellent instructional book of ideas for using the pencil creatively.
A fairly good book for beginners and intermediaries. It can be instrumental in getting the fundamentals right from the very beginning because once you start and pick up a pattern of drawing , then it gets very difficult to adopt a different methodology. Particularly liked the section on human portraits by Douglas Graves and Norman Adams on animal portraiture. The step-by-step snap shots of the drawing proceedings help understand the nuances and subtle aspects of shading and smudging. However the concept of negative space drawing could have been explained better. It is by far the most complex of all aspects of pencil sketching and greater light should have been thrown on it. Still a very informative book for all interested in pencil sketching.
I once read this book 5 years ago and it gave me a lot of basic knowledge about pencil drawings. When I was in 12th grade, I saw a classmate drawing with a pencil on her notebook. How amazing it was for me to see a human face or a small animal gradually appearing on the paper under her pencil strokes. It was also when I realized my special interest in drawings and paintings. I was not confident enough to draw in front of others at that time. When I was alone at home, I rapidly grasped a pencil and chose a catchy image to draw. I didn't know how to create values in drawings. It was simple strokes and outlines but I was really excited. Every drawing and painting draws my attention. After that, I drew some in the shared room in my student time and I received my friends' compliments. I was motivated but it was not too long. I had other interests and didn't manage time wisely to continue drawing, but it always has a place in my heart.
Not too detailed but it was fair enough to start drawing again with "pencil drawing techniques". If practice cannot make perfect, it surely would make something.
Good tips for beginners, and realistic drawings which although are old-fashioned, are visually pleasing and in my case, somewhat nostalgic! This book is good for those who like the old-school hatching style and want to draw realistically by copying from nature and environment around them.
Ilustrasinya bagus. Mengajarkan teknik-teknik menggambar secara freehand dari dasar sampai detail pula. Saya sih suka liat sketsa-sketsanya.he. Sangat disarankan bagi mahasiswa arsitektur awal yang diwajibkan mengambil MK Menggambar Arsitektur ;)
