There Goes the Galaxy #3

Tryfling Matters

Rate this book
They say you can’t go home again. But some people never listen.

Earth— known to the rest of the universe as Tryfe.

No matter what you call it, the little blue planet’s had its share of hard knocks. It’s been bought and sold to alien developers. It’s been held for ransom. Now the universe’s most famous Tryflings—Bertram Ludlow and Rozz Mercer—have returned to clean up the mess.

And what a mess it is. Family is acting strange. An alien corporation is running the place. And corporate outreach has an unusually _hungry_ vibe.

Of course, even alien overlords need quality staff, so Bertram and Rozz boldly dive into the belly of the beast. As corporate spies, they must navigate a dangerous trail of conspiracy theorists, assassins, energy beverages and boy bands—all while battling the darkest force of all: day jobs.

Can the Tryfling defenders save Life As We Know It, or have Bertram and Rozz bitten off more than they can chew?

Don’t miss this exciting conclusion to the There Goes the Galaxy trilogy!

Jenn Thorson always knew she wanted to be a writer; it was the C+ in Penmanship that initially held her back. By the age of 11, she'd written her first mystery novel, Key to the Blue Moon, which her secretary-- er, Mom--was good enough to type up for her. It was a raging hit among the two people she knew.

Spurred by her dramatic success, she went on to write other works, an experience that found her cluing into the Mystery genre, flirting with the Melodramatic Teen style, and becoming better versed in the Embarrassing Poetry of Which We Shall Never Speak Again school of writing.

Yet, oddly, no one stopped her from attending Carnegie Mellon University for Creative and Professional Writing. And it was here she discovered that humor was in her heart. This was a surprise, since the funny bone usually gets so much press.

Soon Jenn graduated from Carnegie Mellon and, with an inconvenient bent toward eating regularly, she took a job as a technical writer for a software development company. In the years that followed, she would move from the joys of explaining where the File menu was, to managing the marketing of the company's product line. Marketing, she realized, involved a gleeful combination of Making Stuff Up and Actually Getting Paid for It; so she became a full-time marketing writer and project manager in a local advertising firm.

She also continued to hone her fiction, and her first published story, "The Last Great Play of Rosie Cosnowski" made its way into the Timber Creek Review.

Since those days, Jenn Thorson's stories have been published in the Humor Press, the magazine for the Lewis Carroll Society of North America, and Romantic Homes magazine.

Her books include the humorous sci-fi trilogy There Goes the Galaxy (There Goes the Galaxy, The Purloined Number and Tryfling Matters) and the Wonderland murder mystery, The Curious Case of Mary Ann.

Jenn Thorson lives in Pittsburgh, PA, and is a member of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America.

Well, this was fun, and I'm kinda bummed that the author is taking another direction with the next book series; I would have to seen another installment of this group of protagonists.

In contrast to the first two books in the series, this one plays out (most of) its story line on Tryfe. Er, Earth. But just as with the first two, the author has fun with plot, dialog, and names. The made-up names for stuff keep flowing, and - as always - sound like *some* name that you already know, but can't quite identify, but know that the made-up one is making some kind of wry commentary.

I think this author is another great example of how (Amazon?) self-publishing is changing the book industry for the better; I can only imagine how many fun books like this I would *not* be seeing if a publisher was a gatekeeper.

If you like tongue-in-cheek humor, and don't mind far-reaching space stories, this is for you.

Jenn Thorson never disappoints. I discovered her through the first book in this series and absolutely adore her unique thought-provoking satire. Belly laughs are guaranteed. She's now among my trusted name-brand authors for me-time. If you love Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Dr. Who, grab this book!

There's nothing trifling about TRYFLING MATTERS. The final offering to the There Goes The Galaxy trilogy, this masterpiece skillfully brings books one and two to completion. With witty repartee and Seinfeld-esque cultural and social observations, Jenn Thorson captures the reader's attention, pulls him/her/it deep into the story, and holds them for the duration of a thrilling ride.

I highly recommend reading the trilogy in order. However, if you're free-styling rebellious type, TRYFLING MATTERS can be read, and understood, as a free-standing novel - bound to be the next great American science fiction novel.

'She held up her red file folder, the one that she’d filled with random papers from the recycling bin. In her first day on the job, she’d learned that carrying a high-visibility file folder and walking briskly was an important tactic in covert office operations. It virtually guaranteed an undisturbed path anywhere she wanted to go. Of course, much like the fake hall passes of her youth, it was important never to abuse the folder’s power.'

'Hanging up his coat, he felt disappointment cling almost as heavily as the teenage fug coming from Locker Thirty-Two. Bertram had prepped for battle. He’d braced for the worst. It was strangely difficult to shift his mindset from blood-bath to bouncy castle.'

'Rollie, that’s the beauty of it. Hardly anyone knows. This is the U.S. Not knowing anything about the rest of the world is practically a badge of honor here. You’ll be golden.'

This is such a wonderful end to an incredible trilogy that I hope will go viral now that all three books are available to read one after the other. That's precisely how I would devour these books if I hadn't read the first two when they initially came out. With each, I found it hard to put down. I know that if I started with the first (knowing the others were available for immediate purchase), I would want to read them right away. In fact, at some point (soon), I plan to take these three beloved books on a vacation where I can read them again in order.

I had not been a huge fan of humorous science fiction until being introduced to There Goes the Galaxy. I fell in love with the quirky characters, pithy and dry comedy, and sparkling story lines. Each has been a bigger delight than the previous and I definitely give this book a gold star recommendation.

Be prepared to laugh out loud (always a sign of a fantastic book!). And if you haven't read the earlier two, I'd read those first (although I think you could jump right into Tryfling Matters and enjoy it as a standalone.

I cannot wait to see what Ms. Thorson comes out with next. She's a fantastic writer so whatever it is, I'll be looking for it.

This is an amazing and perfect ending to the trilogy. It was hard the put the book down, and I wouldn't have, except sleep and my job got in the way. I don't want to give any spoilers, but I will say it is definitely worth the read if you've read the other two books. I can't wait to read her future work no matter what form that takes. This is a wonderful first series to break into the writing scene with.

What a finale. I hardly ever laugh out loud while reading but in this case I did for at least the last third of the volume. An amazing tour-de-force dipping into themes that might be touched by Douglas Adams (quite obviously) but also by Kafka, if only he had been in to satire.
I keep wondering if Ms. Thorson might not have a go with even darker plot, though I really love her humor and puns.

A very highly anticipated book for me, and it definitely was worth waiting for =) Mind-meltingly good, snort-inducing (do not read in public places) and a very good finish to the series I've enjoyed so much!

Jenn Thorson must know aliens

I truly enjoyed the whole series. The author has a great grasp of human nature, and is abler to create wonderful alien characters by turning humans on their heads. Which is a good thing.

More of the same, not great, but just entertaining enough to keep reading. My least favorite in the series. If there was another in the series, I would choose to not read it.
