Rosie Gilmour #7

Kill Me Twice

Rate this book

A beautiful model's death uncovers an ugly conspiracy stretching all the way to Westminster in Rosie Gilmour's darkest case to date.

When rags-to-riches Scots supermodel Bella Mason plunges to her death from the roof of a glitzy Madrid hotel, everyone assumes it was suicide. Except that one person saw exactly what happened to Bella that night, and she definitely didn't jump. But Millie Chambers has no one she can tell - alcoholic, depressed herself and now sectioned by her bullying politician husband, who would believe her? And that's not all Millie knows. Being close to the heart of Westminster power can lead to discovering some awful secrets...

Back in Glasgow, Rosie's research into Bella's life leads to her brother, separated from her in care years before. Dan is now a homeless heroin addict and rent boy, but what he reveals about Bella's early life is electrifying: organised sexual abuse in care homes across Glasgow. Bella had tracked him down so that they could tell the world their story. And now she's dead.

As Rosie's drive to expose the truth leads her closer to Millie and the shameful secrets she has kept for so many years, it becomes clear that what she's about to discover could prove fatal: a web of sexual abuse linking powerful figures across the nation, and the rot at the very heart of the British Establishment...

This is the seventh book in the increasingly popular series featuring Rosie Gilmour.

I must be honest and say that although I have the entire series on my ‘To Be Read’ list, ‘Kill Me Twice’ is the first book of Anna’s that I have actually read. I LOVED this book and read it in just over 24 hours. Needless to say the rest of the series have been bumped up the list. I now realise just what I have been missing.

The characters in ‘Kill Me Twice’ are many and diverse in nature. I adored the character of Rosie, in that she is an ambitious young lady, who is trying to make headway in the world of journalism. She is certainly feisty and has got herself into many different scrapes but she doesn’t show her fear. Rosie has a strong sense of right & wrong, she fights for justice and she fights to get to the truth, however painful it may be. Her editor sometimes despairs of her actions but he knows that Rosie gets results. I really did feel for the three characters mentioned above- the supermodel, the alcoholic wife of the politician and the heroin addict. All are victims in their own way and a product of their circumstances. Certain other characters were distinctly sinister, creepy and were guaranteed to make your skin crawl but that is the intention.

‘Kill Me Twice’ deals with historical sexual abuse, which is relevant in this day and age, given the numerous investigations that are currently ongoing. I used to work in child protection so I have some knowledge of the topic. I don’t want to go into too much detail about the plot of this book but some of the excuses and reasons given made my blood boil and I could have quite cheerfully jumped into the book to slap the relevant people.

This book is really well written. I found that my attention was gripped from the first word on the first page and kept my attention until the last word on the last page. It was as if I had become immersed in the investigation and was a silent member of the team. Reading this book was a bit like riding on a rollercoaster ride in that there were lots of twists, turns and stomach churning moments. I genuinely had to hold my breath at times as I feared what was coming next and I hoped that Rosie wouldn’t get herself into a scrape that she couldn’t escape from. For me, ‘Kill Me Twice’ was a real ‘CPID’ book and reading it became like an addiction, in that I just wanted to read one chapter more, just a little chapter more etc.

In short, I LOVED this book and I will definitely be reading the rest of the series as a matter of urgency. I would definitely recommend this book to others. This book scores a definite 5* for me. I can’t wait to read the next book in the Rosie Gilmour series, which is called ‘Death Trap’ and is released on the 12th January 20

Kill Me Twice by Anna Smith is the seventh book in the Rosie Gilmour series and is actually the first one I’ve read, but I feel it could easily be read as a standalone. I’m definitely planning on going back and reading the rest of the series as Anna Smith’s writing is intense and gripping and it had me hooked from the start and I want to read more.
In the book Rosie has been sent to Madrid to report on the apparent suicide of famous model Bella Mason but while she’s there she gets a tip-off that someone witnessed what happened to Bella and it wasn’t suicide. That someone was Millie Chambers, a woman who is full of despair, verging on alcoholism, with nothing to lose since her marriage to ex tory MP Colin Chambers fell apart. Millie goes on the run but bad luck means Colin catches up with her and has her locked away as the secret of Bella’s death is not the only thing that Millie knows.
On returning to Glasgow Rosie unearths Dan Mason, Bella’s long lost brother living on the streets among the Glasgow junkies and Dan has his own secrets about Bella’s life that someone is trying to keep hidden. Can Rosie expose the hidden stories before it’s too late and someone gets hurt?
Kill Me Twice was a very addictive read with a plot that quickly develops several strands all which Rosie must piece together to get her story. I found it a very fast paced read where there was always something being added to the story without any filler chapters being included, which made great reading.
I really enjoyed the main character Rosie, she initially comes across as tough and hard-nosed but I loved that as the story developed we could see a softer side to her, especially with Dan and that she was actually a quite an emotional character. I also enjoyed the glimpses of her personal life we are given and would love to have read the series from the start to see how she has developed as a character.
This is a novel which touches on some quite deep issues such as drug addictions, alcoholism, child abuse and political cover-ups. At times I found I did grimace at some of the scenes as the writing felt so realistic and very detailed but I think that’s is to be expected with this kind of novel.
Overall I thought this was a great read and one which I can highly recommend and I’m eager for January when the series continues.
Thank you so much to the publishers and Netgalley for sending me this copy to review and also for inviting me to be part of the blog tour.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Quercus Books for an advance copy of Kill Me Twice, the seventh novel to feature intrepid Glaswegian reporter Rosie Gilmour.

Rosie is sent to Madrid to cover the latest hot story, the apparent suicide of supermodel, Bella Mason. While there she gets a tip that ex Tory Home Secretary Colin Chambers' wife, Millie, was also staying at the hotel and drinking heavily. Desperate to avoid a scandal Colin has Millie sectioned but not before she writes a devastating letter, which Rosie gets hold of, saying she witnessed Bella's murder and that her husband was complicit in covering up a child sex abuse allegations. It is up to Rosie to prove these allegations.

Kill Me Twice is another excellent read which held my attention from start to finish. I read it in one sitting as I couldn't wait to see what was coming next. The plot is one long adventure with Rosie dashing here, there and everywhere to get the proof required for her multi-stranded story. Collectively I doubt that it stands up well in the plausibility stakes but every vignette has the ring of truth about it, from Millie's treatment at the hands of her husband, the portrayal of the junkies, the rampant cocaine use among models to the stories of abuse and its effect on the abused.

Throughout it all Rosie is the stand out. Supposedly a hard nosed tabloid journalist she gets emotionally involved in her stories and does her best to support and help the witnesses she meets while still getting her story. She is a joy to read about and effortlessly draws the reader into the narrative. The best bits in the novel are not, however, the plot but her interactions with her editor, Mick McGuire. There is something inherently Glaswegian about their relationship, the dark humour, the understanding and the commitment. It's great stuff.

It has been a few years since I last read about Rosie and her exploits and I had forgotten how exhilarating they are. Kill Me Twice is no exception and I have no hesitation in recommending it as an excellent, fun read.

Hey, guys!
I need to thank NetGalley and Quercus for giving me the opportunity to meet Rosie Gilmour. I would really like to be her friend, in real life. No kidding!
Rosie is a reporter from the Post, and she is covering the apparent suicide of a very famous model – Bella Mason, that happened in a hotel in Madrid. However, Rosie feels this does not feel like a suicide and that some parts of the puzzle just do not fit right.
To add more spice to it, Millie Chambers, the wife of a very important politician, was in that hotel that very night, and she is the only one who can shed some light to all the investigations – but this is far from being an easy task to be done.
Everything comes to its peak when Mitch and Dan come on the scene, and more secrets are revealed. Together with Rosie, Millie Chambers and the lovely Bridget, they become a kind of a league to find the truth about Bella´s death and expose many other criminals, its shameful crimes and network.
Kill Me Twice is not only a thriller… It of course has its plot built around Bella Mason´s death, and it is very well written. Nevertheless, it also touches very sensitive issues such as drugs, political scandals, corruption, child abuse, etc. A book made me think of many situations I have seen on the news, and I was able to relate all of the passages of the book to the real world. This was creepy, but awesome, if you know what I mean.
I would (and certainly will) read more of Anna Smith´s books, especially those with Rosie Gilmour – I get attached to the characters, I confess.
Hope you get a chance to read this amazing book, and see you on the next trip!

I feel like I say this with every book in this series, but this is the best one yet! Rosie Gilmour has definitely grown on me too and while I'm not saying I would want her as a friend you would fair better with her on your side that against you. There are several strands of the storyline and Anna Smith does a great job of tying them all together. This book seemed to race right from the start and there was never a dull moment. This is a series that just keeps delivering the goods and fans of the series will love this one but it would also be a cracker of a read as a standalone.

I received a free copy of Kill Me Twice in return for an honest review and my thanks to NetGalley and Quercus Books for that.

I read the first book in this series The Dead Won't Sleep when it was released and loved it, so not sure why I didn't continue as this latest book, the seventh in the series is just fantastic. It can still be read as a stand alone but I will soon be reading the others asap as I really must have missed out on some brilliant stories.

Anna Smith is a superb writer, Kill Me Twice is riveting, unputdownable reading. Fast-paced and thrilling with the right amount of tension and suspense, so I was kept turning the pages keen to find out how it would all end. Rosie Gilmour is such a fantastic character, strong and determined.
Highly recommended to all crime fiction fans.

A model, a junkie, a leech, a contract killer, a politician, a witness, and possibly the scoop of the year, I loved Rosie Gilmour's investigation into a drug related suicide. With great characters, 'Kill Me Twice' was a read that was gripping, sensitive, pacy and had me reading just one more chapter that turned into as many chapters I could devour before work or family interfered. Highly recommend 'Kill Me Twice' and shall definitely be reading more about Rosie, her contacts, and her colleagues from The Post.

Wonderful novel by this writer once again. I've read a lot of smiths work and I'm beginning to like gilmour. The storyline is absolutely brilliant and had me on the edge of my chair a few times. That's when I know I have a good book. The links with all the characters were brought together nicely. Have to go shopping for more of smiths books

Oh my, I'm managing to catch up slowly with this series, and you know what, i'm thrilled I've had the chance to read these last few books back to back, because each one just leaves me wanting more.
I absolutely love the character Rosie Gilmore. I think the fact that she's a journalist rather than a detective really helps make Rosie stand out. Each book just shows tat for Rosie there is no boundaries, If she needs to get the full story, she had no limits, she will go all out to get it. It doesn't always do her any good, and sometimes she ends up in a bit of a scrape or two.
This really is a first class gritty thriller, and really does  leave you wanting more. This could be read as a stand alone, but I really can't recommend enough how much better the books are, when read in order.
This book really does deserve more than the 5 stars given. Each time I finish one of these books, I just think there is no way Anna Smith can improve with another story, yet each one really does get better and better. This author is by far one of the best around for pulling you into each and every page, keeping your attention the whole way through and throwing in one or two things you just really wasn't expecting. I really can't stress how much this series of books needs reading.

It always scares me reading a book that is so far into a series like KILL ME TWICE, especially when that book is SEVEN stories in! I'm worried I will lose the back story and arc of the characters, but thankfully this was not the case and I was able to enjoy the read. This book can definitely be enjoyed as a standalone novel.

There are so many different moving parts to this story which starts with the apparent suicide of a young model. An event witnessed by the wife of a high profile politician that is already involved in sinister dealings. Rosie Gilmour is our protagonist. A crime reporter who has made her name in digging deep and exposing the worst offenders. She is a tough female in a male driven industry and even when knocked down - she's straight back to it and there really is no stopping her!

KILL ME TWICE is a fast paced book, with something happening on every page. As I reader, I enjoyed this pace and was certainly not bored at any stage. I am certainly keen to read more about Rosie and the team and what she uncovers next!

Another audio version with the wonderful narration by Sarah Barron. Another gripping read, with many twists and turns. Finally TJ ‘gets’ Rosie and stops being so controlling! Thankfully there is not too much of him in this book and it’s all the better for it! The child abuse scandal from earlier in Rosie’s career comes back with a chance to right the wrongs of before. There is a suspect suicide which in fact is murder! The drug side of Glasgow is heartbreakingly real and 2 characters you become fond of don’t make it!

Can’t wait for the next one!

Anna Smith's experience as a journalist covering major investigations shines throughout her writing on very difficult topics.
Kill Me Twice focusses on links between drug abuse and the modelling industry as well as the plight of those sexually abused. It also shines a light on all those who are struggling to overcome addiction.
It is well written, fast paced, and harrowing at times. Rosie puts herself into yet more very dangerous situations, and has thus far used up a lot of her "nine lives."
I was hooked from page one, as I continue to enjoy the Rosie Gilmour series.

Milly, recently a politicians' wife, has had enough and has decided to end her life by throwing herself off a building.
While she is at the edge, she sees a well- known supermodel being man-handled by two heavies.
hey get her to the edge and then throw her off!
Milly is shocked and forgets her own plans and wonders what to do with the information.
This is a fast-moving, exciting read!

What a cracking good read. I struggled to put this book down. I must have missed this book as I seem to have read it out of sync; this did not however cause any issues with understanding plots.

Keep up the great writing Anna!

I'm not sure if an investigative journalists life is quite as dangerous as that, but the book was a page turner from the very first page.
Most enjoyable.
