From the "Dead Soil" world comes a series of novellas showing how one of the main characters survives the first days of the apocalypse. (You don't have to read "Dead Soil" first to enjoy these terrifying tales!) Who ever said the zombie apocalypse wouldn't be bloody? If you like gut-wrenching zombie gore, then the Dead Beginnings series is for you! Lonnie Lands felt like his world was ending. His mother was long dead, leaving him with an abusive father. He got kicked out of the Army days before boot camp graduation. And to top it off, his fiance cheated on him and dumped him in a letter. He thought things couldn't get any worse...until they did. When the zombie outbreak takes over Lonnie's small town in Northwest Indiana, the Army washout is forced to tap into his survival skills and his humanity. How will he survive his first nights in the zombie apocalypse? (If he does at all) "Beginnings is great! I've always been reticent to audiobooks but this one is very well done, you just need to close your eyes and the scenes jump in your mind!" --- Andrea, Instagram review of the audiobook (See the review on my instagram at www.instagram.com/author_alex_apostol) "As always, I enjoy reading Alex's books...I'm glad she choose this way rather than including flashbacks to her main book. I have been writing as long as I can remember. I always knew I wanted to write books that someday many people could enjoy. I have a BA in English, a Masters in Business Administration and Marketing, and a Master's in Education.
I enjoy reading as much as I do writing and learned a lot while I was in school about the different forms of literature and the different genres all throughout the world. I only hope that people enjoy my books as much as I've enjoyed reading theirs.
When I'm not reading or writing I enjoy spending time with my family, going for walks or hiking, being outdoors, horseback riding, and watching movies.
Lots of zombies, great. Lots of gore, also great. An unlikeable main character, not so great. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of the anti-hero but they also need to show something that makes me like them.
Lonnie Lands behaves like a dick, acts like a dick and frankly is a dick. So, when he charges head first into a horde of zombies I don’t find myself really caring if he makes it or not. Sometimes I found myself just hoping he’d be bitten.
There was a moment where Lonnie has a fist fight with a zombie, where he eventually caves in its face with his fists and then asks if another guy has been bitten or scratched… might want to check your knuckles, Lonnie.
Otherwise it’s a fairly good zombie book. If you like zombies, gore and action you could do worse than this short zombie-filled novella.
Despite being a novella, Dead Beginnings is packed with action. One aspect of the zombie world Lonnie finds himself in that I found refreshing was that he doesn't have an endless supply of ammo and other resources at his disposal. He had to improvise on the fly to a rapidly changing environment and learn tough lessons in the process. I would have given the book 5 stars but Lonnie's initially impersonal attitude rubbed me the wrong way. He overcomes that character flaw by the end though, and begins to assume a more likeable role. I wil say that his carelessness "should" catch up to him if not kept in check.

The Dead Beginnings novella series are prequels to the Dead Soil series, though you do not have to read one or the other first. They are independent of each other and can be enjoyed in any order. Volume one follows the character Lonnie Lands, the Army boot camp flunkie with a sailor's mouth and a violent attitude. When he receives a Dear John letter from his girlfriend he's thrown into a violent rage that gets him kicked out in the last week of training. Back home, he uses the opportunity to confront the woman who broke his heart. He hopes to catch her in the act, but instead he finds her horribly changed. Lonnie first night trying to survive the zombie outbreak is filled with death, gore, and thrills.

I started with Dead Soil then read this one. I wish I had reversed order. I always find the background of characters helpful and oftentimes makes the book more interesting to follow. I think authors should put in a recommendation for reading order.
Dead Beginnings is like 3 stories in one. The first part is normal and then it flows into the zombie mode. After that it is like another story with strange ending.
This is a great start to this exciting end of the world with zombies! Good ideas & characters, interesting plot! I do always enjoy this writers work & always look forward to the next adventure!
I could not finish the book as I despised the main character. The author is decent with telling the story, but I could not like the POS main character.
