Loved it, filled with great tips Remind me not to review on Amazon anymore, didn't realize the reviews were automatically copied over to Goodreads.
This book is perfect for ANY High School tennis coach and will help other coaches as well. It is filled with examples and tips on time management, team management, psychology, dealing with teenagers and stories. Patton has been doing this for many years and has stories and examples from his own mistakes to back up his ideas.
There were a couple of parts that I don't agree with now but perhaps I need more experience to see the light.
There are a lot of great ideas, great drills, and coaching wisdom in here. In the Kindle edition, there were a lot of obvious typos and errors, but they never got in the way of understanding his points. This work seems to have been largely compiled from short articles, and so at times there's a feeling of disjunction from chapter to chapter or unnecessary repetition. Still, I found this to be quite good.
This is a wonderfully practical book for new coaches. It is chocked full of sound advice and on-court anecdotes garnered from an experienced (and humble) coach. I wish I would have had a copy of this book when I began coaching years ago. It would have made that first year a bit easier. I have the 2nd edition of the book and noted that it needs editing. The educator in me used a pencil to make correction for some errors; some of which made the selections a bit difficult to follow. The book would be a 5 star book if properly edited. Despite the need for editing, I would love to see all high school athletic directors purchase this book for incoming inexperienced tennis coaches and for established coaches who might need a refresher about coaching basics
This book is a gem and a must read for any tennis coach who is new to leading at the high school level. Bill shares so many invaluable nuggets of wisdom and also lessons learned on what NOT to do in order to optimize both short and long term success in all key facets of the role.
The book covers virtually every imaginable scenario you might encounter and is also an enjoyable and easy read. There is no doubt that you are gaining insight from a true high school tennis teaching professional who also is very generous in providing additional information outside of the book that you can obtain my simply emailing him. Excellent book in all capacities!!
If you are going to coach a high school tennis team there is good information/ advice here whether you are a first time coach or have been coaching. The examples are a little repetitive and a couple of places in the book seem marginaly or strangely related. I read it on kindle and there were numerous editorial errors in grammer/spelling which I overlooked as I could generally understand the gist of the concept. With a little editing to correct spelling/ grammer/ format and continuity I would give this 5 stars.
