48 books45 followersSir Thomas Walker Arnold (1864, Devonport, Devon – 1930) was an eminent British orientalist and historian of Islamic art who taught at MAO College, Aligarh Muslim University, then Aligarh College, and Government College University, Lahore. He was a friend of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, and wrote his famous book "The preaching of Islam" at the insistence of Sir Syed. He was also the teacher of famous poet-philosopher Muhammad Iqbal, Syed Sulaiman Nadvi and a very close friend of Shibli Nomani who was also a teacher at Aligarh.

يستحق النجوم الخمسة بجدارة رغم ما يظهر من مؤلفه من حنق على انتشار الإسلام أحيانا، ومحاولته تفسير كل تقدم للإسلام بفساد وضعف الممالك التي فتحها لا لقوة الإسلام وجاذبيته في نفسه..
لكن الكتاب وثيقة تاريخية كبرى وفي غاية الأهمية من مستشرق غير مسلم متبحر في البحث من جهابذة المستشرقين وعظمائهم.. وثيقة تثبت بجلاء خرافة انتشار الإسلام بالسيف

يختص هذا الكتاب بعرض تفاصيل الدعوة الإسلام. في إطار زمني يمتد من حياة محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم وانتهاء بانتشار الإسلام في أرخبيل الملايو مرورا بانتشار الإسلام في آسيا والصين وإفريقية وغيرها من البلاد.
يبدأ الكاتب بشرح حال أهل البلد قبل الإسلام، وكيف تمت الدعوة بعد ذلك، ثم يبين حال أهل البلد بعد دخولهم الإسلام ويستعرض ما يحدث بعد ذلك من تغيرات في نمط الحياة الاجتماعي والسياسي.

This book discussed the historicity of Islam in propagating its faith over a vast portion of the world. This book was written by British Orientalist, Sir Walker Arnold and was published in 1896, hence, the historical fact and analysis were based until the early 19th century.
This is an extremely captivating book as it not only illustrated the spreading of Islam but also how it impacted the people including non-Muslim throughout the civilisation. The principal objective of this book was to demonstrate the missionary activity that was put forth by Muslim. I believe it was intended to give a balanced view and/or to counter-argue the claim ‘Islam is spread by the sword’. This topic was very well-written and it’s no doubt that this book should be made well-known to the masses. Specifically, as we are in the midst of growing Islamophobia. As we all know, the claim that ‘Islam is spread by the sword’ is one of the tenets of Islamophobia. This claim implies that Islam ONLY spreads by military and ‘conversion or death’. It’s easier to erase centuries of history and jump from ISIS (ISIL) to the 6th-century medieval without understanding the social setting and context. The author used the medieval lens and reasoning when discussing the veracity of the conquest and land expansion during the reign of the Islamic empire. As mentioned in the book, the conquest also means to liberate a land that was being oppressed. It’s also important to note that during the medieval period, a community was willing to be governed under or come into a treaty with a certain empire as long as they can live safely and secure. There were many pieces of evidence and historical records that support this statement.
“This same sense of security of religious life under Muslim rule led many Christians of Asia Minor also about the same time to welcome the advent of the Seljuq Turks as their deliverer from hated Byzantine government not only on account of its oppressive system of taxation…”
The simplicity of Islamic creed compared to other religion (i.e Christianity and Roman Catholic), as well as Muslims' proper conduct, played instrumental roles in spreading Islam. This case wasn’t only occurred when Muslims were in power (i.e under the Islamic empire), but also when Muslims came to foreign lands (i.e as merchants). Muslims were regarded as highly civilised people because of their piety, cleanliness, literate and well-informed in faith as compared to other people in faith.
The Islamic teaching that promotes co-existence and toleration were also the factors that led to rapid conversion to Islam. The book provided the data that under Muslim rule, non-muslims could practice their belief, churches were built and being hired in a government position. The context of jizyah (yearly tax paid by non-muslim who live under Muslim rule) also being discussed in this book which certainly refuted the claim that jizyah was oppressive.
Certainly, there were cases throughout the Islamic history where the ruler/sultan imposed religion toward their people, forced conversion or treated non-Muslim badly. But this was clearly against the teaching of the Islam which stated ‘no compulsion in religion’. In comparison, there were more records existed to support the toleration non-muslim experienced especially when Muslim in power.
“ A further proof that their sufferings have been due to misgovernment rather than their religions persecution is the fact that Muslim and Christan suffered alike.”
“But of any organised attempt to force the acceptance of Islam on the non-Muslim populations, or any systematic persecution, we hear nothing. Had the Caliphs chosen to adopt either course of action, they might have swept away Christianity as easily as Ferdinand and Isabella drove Islam out of Spain, or Louis XIV. made Protestantism penal in France, or the Jews were kept out of England for 350 years.”
Many gems can be found in this book that makes it hard for me to trivially mention one by one since every chapter needs a long discussion and contemplation. The fact that this topic had been academically addressed more than 100 years ago is very telling. This is an important book to be read this day and age to heighten the understanding of this topic for Muslim and non-Muslim alike. We must educate ourselves with correct understanding so that we won’t be misinformed which then resulted in misbehaving and prejudice.

this book was recommended by anonymous friend in a forum, and I didn't regret reading it, to be honest this book is the best book about Islamic History and the biography of our Prophet since "the prophet of our time" by Karen Armstrong,
and it's very hard to find such a book that has no bias against our Prophet, especially since it was written by a non-muslim scholar
and I really love the mesmerizing poem from Khadijah, the first wife of Muhammad :
"I love thee, my cousin,
for thy kinship with me,
for the respect with which thy people regard thee,
for thy honesty,
for the beauty of thy character and for the truthfulness of thy speech."
and as for me,
there's nothing new in this book, since I already knew about my own religion's history, but nevertheless it's always exciting to learn about our our history from the perspective of non-muslim
and it's very hard to find such a book that has no bias against our Prophet, especially since it was written by a non-muslim scholar

Obavezno štivo za sve one koji tvrde, da je islam vjera koja se šrila isključivo mačem i osvajanjem. Knjiga u kojoj je sve potkrijepljeno sa vjerodostojnim izvorima. Fascinatno da je ova knjiga objavljena prije sto i više godina a svejedno je stručno i profesionalno napisana.

كتاب رغم قدمه فلا تجد له مثيلا في ما كتب حتى الأن فيما قرأت حول أن انتشار الإسلام كان في مجمله سلميا .
أهمية الكتاب انه من مؤلف أجنبي أكاديمي لم يسلم ، أورد فيه عددا كبيرا من المراجع الأجنبية حول انتشار الإسلام .
من أهم ما أعجبني فيه انه لم يجعل المسلميين ملائكة وأشار إلى حالات حاول بها البعض نشر الإسلام بالقوة وأن ندرت.
أهمية الكتاب انه من مؤلف أجنبي أكاديمي لم يسلم ، أورد فيه عددا كبيرا من المراجع الأجنبية حول انتشار الإسلام .
من أهم ما أعجبني فيه انه لم يجعل المسلميين ملائكة وأشار إلى حالات حاول بها البعض نشر الإسلام بالقوة وأن ندرت.

A pretty thorough history of the missionary side of the spread of Islam.
This book is a much needed response to the many European historians who paint Islam in a negative light.
The author puts forth how peaceful conversions significantly outweigh those done through force, both in quantity and religion sincerity.
However, this isn't necessarily a complete history of the spread of Islam. There are various instances in the book where the author mentions some wars and conflicts caused by Muslim zealots, but since they don't fall under the focus of this book, he rightly skips expounding on them. But in doing so, we miss out on the complete picture in some important ways.
Not to say that this book is, in any way, inadequate. This was a thorough and an enlightening read. It puts down a major portion of the history, and is a must read for anyone looking to understand the spread of Islam.
Also, what fascinated me most was how the inherent conditions and existing religious beliefs of a place fused together with Islam, once those regions had been annexed by the zealots, giving rise to individualistic interpretations of Islam that still remained true to its original form.
Final rating: 3.7/5

الكتب التي كتبها غربيون عن الإسلام وعقائده وتاريخه كثيرة، لكن القليل منها ما يمكن اعتباره مميزا بعيدا عن التعصب الأعمي أو بعيدا عن الحيادية، وهذا الكتاب يعد واحدا منها، رغم ما يبدو أحيانا انه نوع من غير الحيادية في الحديث عن انتشار الدين الإسلامي، لكن ما يمكن أن نراه انعدام حياديه يعود بدرجة كبيرة إلي أن كاتبه ليس مسلما ، فليس من الضروري أن يري ما نراه، وأن يكتب كيفما نريد.
الكتاب يتحدث بصورة تفصيلية دقيقة جدا تاريخ انتشار الإسلام في بقاع الأرض المختلفة شرقها وغربها. انتشار الإسلام في أقاصي الأرض، نحن نعلم إجمالا أن التجار هم من نشر الدين في هذه الأصقاع البعيدة، لكننا لا نعلم كيفية هذا الانتشار، ولا نعمل من قاموا بذلك وفي أي عهد فعلوا.
هذه التفاصيل الدقيقة هي موضوع هذا الكتاب.

Great read. It has many anecdotes as well as trend analysis that debunk the spread-by-the-sword myth. Mind-boggling that this was published in the 1800s! I'm surprised so little has changed in Western perceptions of Islam, however.

تتبع (آرنولد) في كتابه تاريخ انتشار الإسلام في الأقطار المختلفة، مستندًا إلى كم كبير من المصادر، ولم يعتمد على المصادر الإسلامية فحسب، وإنما اعتمد كذلك على مصادر كثيرة متنوعة، مثل الوثائق البيزنطية والأ��مينية وتلك المتعلقة بالكنيسة الكاثوليكية والكنائس الشرقية، ممحصًا في الوقت ذاته عشرات المراجع التي كتبها كبار المستشرقين؛ ملتزمًا في كل سطر وكل كلمة في كتابه بمنهج علمي موضوعي صارم؛ وتراه في هذا الكتاب يناقش كثير من المسائل التي تعتبر اليوم حساسة، مثل مفهوم الجهاد والجزية وحقوق الأقليات الدينية تحت حكم المسلمين.

بالمصادفة وقع بين يدي كتاب بعنوان الدعوة الى الاسلام بحث في نشر عقيدة الاسلام للمستشرق البريطاني توماس ارنولد
الكتاب يتحدث عن طرق الدعوة في الاسلام من عهد الرسول محمد الى القرن التاسع عشر ويدقق على دخول الاسلام في افريقيا وجنوب شرق اسيا.
وأجمل ما في الكتاب انه يدحض الفقاعة التي تقول ان الاسلام انتشر بالسيف حيث يدحض المؤلف هذا القول ويبين ان الاسلام انتشر بالدعوة واللين والسماحة والعدل والتعامل الحسن وفِي سرده التاريخي يثبت هذا الامر ويعلق على من يقول انه انتشر بالسيف انهم فئه عمموا الاستثناء على العام.
والجميل ان الكاتب مسيحي وبريطاني ولكنه اتصف بصفات المؤرخ الحقيقي حينما كتب هذا الكتاب.

I had to write a paper about leprosy, and this was one of the primary sources that I used as a reference. Everyone has their beliefs and it was very interesting to read how the disease was and still is, frowned upon.

This book was written more than 100 years ago and testifies to the beauty and peaceful spirit of Islam. It is a valuable recommendation for those who believe Islam spread through force.

كتاب رائع للمستشرق توماس أرنولد الذي يتعدي ال 500 صفحة يثبت فيه الكاتب مقولة "إن الإسلام أنتشر بحد السيف" باطلة وأن الإسلام دين دعوة ورحمة وما أنتشر إلا بالدعوة باللين والرحمة والرأفة.
يعتبر الكتاب تأريخي، يؤرخ الكاتب فيه دخول الإسلام لبلاد الكفر حتي صارت بلاد إسلامية بفضل الدعوة إلي عبادة الله وحده، فعند تصفح الكتاب تكاد تتجرع مرارة الألم عند التحدث عن دول دخلها الإسلام وصار المسلمون فيها كثرة وذو قوة ومنعة وشوكة وبأس وصارت هذه الدول الآن كما كانت من قبل، دول كفر وصار المسلمون فيها كثرة ولكنها "غثاء كغثاء السيل" مضطهدون وضعاف، وكذلك الألم عند إدراكك بأن من جمع المعلومات المفيدة التي يحتويها الكتاب كاتب "مستشرق" وليس كاتب مسلم، فهذا الألم بسبب أن المستشرق "توماس ارنولد" هو من يدافع عن الإسلام بأنه انتشر بالرحمة وليس بالعنف والسيف.
الكتاب يحتوي علي معلومات وإقتباسات قيمة ستفيد من هو مهتم بدراسة التاريخ وخصوصا تاريخ فتح المسلمين لدول كفر حتي صارت دول إسلامية.
يخبر الكاتب عن دور التجار في نشر تعاليم الدين الإسلامي، وكذلك دور الفاتحين ايضا، ودور السلاطين في الرحمة بالرعايا في حرية اعتقاد الديانات الأخري.
مما يؤخذ علي المؤلف حشوه الزائد عن الحد، فذكر أشياء أراها لا فائدة من وراها وهي من باب التطويل والحشو، وكذلك يؤخذ عليه إخفائه كره المسيحيين للإسلام وكذلك كرهه هو أيضا ولكن ظهر هذا في بعض صفحات الكتاب ما يدلل علي ذلك، وكذلك عدم فهمه للحركة الوهابية ونعتها بالمتشددين في بعض الأحيان وذلك سبب عدم تعمقه في فهم الحركة او فهم الدين.
الكتاب شيق وممتع حتي يصل لأعلي مؤشر يجذب القارئ حتي ينتهي من مطالعته، ثم بعد ذلك يهبط المؤشر حتي يدخل ضمن المأخذ علي الكتاب وهو الحشو حتي تصاب بملل ثم يرتفع في نهاية الكتاب من جديد

الكتآب ببسآطة يؤكد و يوضح مقولة جورج سيل
