Jimmy Brink and Eric Halter grew up together in a small country town. While Eric has always been content with life as a rancher, Jimmy wanted more and moved to Chicago early on to pursue a medical career. Life has a way of coming back around. When Jimmy’s parents decide to retire in Florida, Jimmy returns to his hometown to finish his residency at a local hospital. Flamboyant boyfriend Oliver in tow, Jimmy bumps into his old friend. Eric quickly takes a disliking to Oliver, though, and for good reason. Oliver proves he’s not only self-centered but also a cheater. To complicate matters, Eric finds it more and more difficult to hide his attraction to his best friend. When the opportunity arises, he needs to decide whether to risk their friendship to pursue his feelings... but maybe Jimmy will see there’s more for him now than ever before in his hometown.

It's been an amazing journey since DSP first contracted Lorcan's Desire in January 2011. I've published 2 free reads with the M/M Romance group, my back list is growing, met some great people and have made some amazing friends.
I'm still in shock that I'm listed among the many talented authors at Dreamspinner Press! The little voice in the back of my head is screaming, "You are so out of your league."
Shhhhh I won't tell them if you don't :)

I enjoyed some of S.J.D. Peterson’s past books, including Plan B , Beyond Duty and Conner's Courage . Unfortunately and despite the stellar writing, My Hometown didn't quite work for me.

My biggest issue is the plot and the way certain scenes are handled. Maybe that's on me; after all, the blurb does mention a self-centered, cheating boyfriend. But still, Oliver, the boyfriend, takes up way too much page time, which diminishes the romance between the MCs.

I never understood what Jimmy saw in Oliver. Oliver’s attitude grates on Jimmy’s nerves, and he’s even irritated with Oliver during sex. Yet Jimmy still chooses to bring Oliver to his hometown to live with him.

At first, I was fine with this. Many people stay in a relationship that, in retrospect, should have ended sooner. But the bad boyfriend melodrama continues for half the story.

There is no romance between the MCs until 62%. Apart from unspoken feelings and thoughts from both parties, there is no romantic interaction at all. And when the men do finally get together, the boyfriend (who by now has become "vengeful and maybe even teetering toward insane," as stated in the blurb) keeps popping up.

The breakup scene between Jimmy and Oliver really bothered me. Jimmy is right, of course, but the way he reacts is childish, immature, and out of character. The whole scene read like a joke. By this time, Oliver seemed like a caricature to me, and I wasn’t sure what purpose his character served.

Jimmy and Eric do finally end up together, but the incident that led to this seemed manufactured to me.

This may well be a case of “it's not you; it’s me.” Other reviewers are sure to have a different opinion of the story. If you don’t mind a book that’s heavy on the angst and relatively low on the romance, you might enjoy this one.

DAYUM .... that cover. I wanted to like the book, but a great cover does not a great story make.

While Jimmy and Eric have been best friends since boyhood, Jimmy has not been in contact with Eric for two years, until he moves back to his hometown, with boyfriend Oliver in tow, to start his residency at the local hospital. Jimmy loves Eric, but knows Eric is straight. Eric has dated lots of women, but there's just something about Jimmy that makes him excited, you know .... down there.

You know that Oliver is not going to be starring in the role of "Boyfriend" too much longer, but the way it happens is very crass and doesn't shed too good a light on Jimmy and Eric and their friends.

Almost 70% of the book is done before Jimmy and Eric actually kiss (book is listed as 302 pages on my reader, but ends on page 259 plus lots and lots of promos for other books). Add in a bunch of details about goats, chickens, wrestling matches, good ole boy parties, and there is basically no character development for Jimmy or Eric, or anyone in the book. I really liked Beyond Duty, but felt My Hometown wasn't on par.

I liked this a lot, but I felt the blurb was misleading. I expected more out of the potentially insane Oliver than him calling all the time and popping up everywhere begging for another chance. I genuinely expected him to be behind

Hmm.. Ive read the other reviews about Oliver taking too much page time but it was not the case actually. He's only in I'd say 20% of the book and the rest were Jimmy and Eric moments. Anyway, this was a good, low angst, slowburn, COWBOY, friends to lovers story. I recommend it :) :) :)

I loved the setup and really loved the cover. Like, really. Unfortunately there were too many distractions away from the MC's and I had trouble reconciling the relationship for these guys as they moved from friends to lovers.

My Hometown is a enjoyable friends to lovers story about two best friends who finally admit to their attraction and move on to more. The story really focuses on Jimmy’s two relationships, one with Oliver and the other with Eric. The Eric storyline sees these guys starting off with a conflict as Jimmy comes home expecting everything to fall back into place and Eric still stinging from his feelings of rejection. Jimmy hadn’t realized how much he had been neglecting his friend and is quick to apologize and try to make it up to him. It leaves things kind of strained between them though, especially since Eric clearly doesn’t like Oliver. Over the course of the story the guys move from conflict, to slowly regaining their friendship, to Eric ultimately accepting his feelings for Jimmy. They both are hiding how they feel for a while, but I did really appreciate that these guys talk to each other about their issues and work things out. These guys are fun together and I could really feel their long standing friendship through their interaction.

If you're looking for angst or depth of story you should probably move along.

If you want a sweet 'childhood friends to lovers/ gay for you/ cowboy' romance, you are probably in the right place.

I liked these characters, but I had a problem with the timing in the book. Oliver (cheater mentioned in the blurb) gets way too much attention in the book. I wanted him gone so the focus could switch to the MCs. I don't think Jimmy and Eric got enough page time; the relationship between them was sweet but I wanted to see more time with them together. (This being the reason I did not rate the story higher.)

I’m a huge fan of this author so I jump at the chance to read her books. As always, the writing is top notch and I enjoyed the storyline. The friends-to-lovers stories are always a lot of fun to read—the pent up frustration, the realization that yes, I might be in love with my best friend, etc. I love all of it. Unfortunately, My Hometown just felt a little flat to me.

I waited a couple of weeks after reading this book to finally sit down and write the review. First, let me say that I loved this story. It was everything a friends-to-lovers story should be. The one friend, Jimmy, comes back to town after being away at college, reuniting with Eric, the friend who stayed behind. One is gay, the other straight. The straight guy realizes he has feelings for his gay best friend, so on and so on. This story has all the ingredients for being a great read: the writing is outstanding, the characters are amazing, the pace and tone are spot on. It was the same story I’ve read before. Different setting, different characters, but all in all, just the same.

So why did I feel this book fell flat? I prefer a plot with a little bit of an unusual twist to set it apart from other books with the same trope. I feel Ms. Peterson tries to do that with Oliver, Jimmy’s over-the-top boyfriend. As the scenes unfold, we know where the story is going, and Oliver feels like a filler. Seriously, he wasn’t needed. I think he was an attempt by the author to set My Hometown apart from other books, but his storyline just didn’t go anywhere. Sadly, a missed opportunity.

I’m one of those readers that must be grabbed in the very beginning of a book, and SJD Peterson does that—I was hooked from the first page. But while I enjoyed what I read, there was no spark. Are my expectations too high? I don’t think so. I feel if an author tackles a storyline that’s been done ad nauseam, it should have something that makes it different from anything else out there. This one just didn’t have that.

I’ve mentioned before this is a well written story. I loved Eric. He was an uncomplicated, true to himself, genuine character. I loved being inside his head as he’s dealing with these new-found feelings for his best friend. Seeing the emotional roller coaster he dealt with at times was amusing, thoughtful and just fun to read. Kudos to the author for giving us that. It took me a while to warm up to Jimmy, he felt a little self-absorbed to me, but in the end he definitely proves himself worthy. Having the POV’s of both men throughout made the story move along seamlessly.

Now, all that being said, will I recommend My Hometown? Absolutely! Just because it didn’t hit the mark with me, doesn’t mean other readers won’t enjoy it. Give it a whirl.

I honestly can not resist a Jo Peterson book. I'm fairly certain I've read 98 percent of the available titles, and she's an auto-buy for me. With that said, it's not hard to see why I was drooling over the release of 'My Hometown'. Honestly, what could be better? A friend to lovers story, a maniacal madman trying to ruin a small Tennessee town, hot sex because that's what Jo writes, and hardworking cowboys. Yum. Yum. Yum. Enough said.

Growing up all Jimmy ever wanted was to get off the farm, away from animal shit, go to a big city, and become a doctor. Eight years in Chicago and now he's come home to do his residency and take over the house and farm for his parents who are retiring. Unfortunately, he brings Oliver, hoping that a fresh start will get them through some of the hurdles they'd already suffered in their two-year relationship. However, Oliver is too shallow not to fall back on his ways, and Jimmy finally gets rid of him.

Jimmy and Eric have been best friends all of their life. Eric is part of the reason Jimmy left. He didn't ever want to make a huge mistake with his straight friend and ruin their friendship. What he doesn't know, however, is that Eric has had more than one inappropriate thought about Jimmy. But only Jimmy. Eric isn't gay and doesn't even think he's bisexual. He's pretty much gay for Jimmy. These are Eric's secrets, though, and not something he ever plans on sharing with Jimmy.

Jimmy was sure that eventually Oliver would get tired of trying to get Jimmy back, and he'd leave the area. But Oliver shows up everywhere, and no matter how many times Jimmy tells him it is over, he just keeps appearing. Well, at least until Oliver finds a new man with the important initials after his name - MD. That is okay, though, because it gives Eric and Jimmy time to ease into the fact they've been in love with each other for more than half their lives and isn't it about time they did something about it?

This was a wonderful, fun, and sexy read. I loved seeing the progression of Eric and Jimmy's relationship from best friends to best friends and lovers. The drama was fairly light but entertaining. Thank you, Jo, I had a wonderful time reading about your boys, and I can easily recommend them!

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

This book wasn’t quite what I expected after reading the blurb. I imagined Oliver running around causing all sorts of mayhem and destruction but that didn’t happen. There wasn’t a boiled bunny in sight!

The story is about Jimmy returning to his hometown, a small town centred on ranching, after being away in the big smoke realising his dream of becoming a doctor. He arrives back with his current boyfriend Oliver who is about as far removed from being a cowboy as can be to complete his residency at the local hospital and to look after the family ranch allowing his parents to retire.

It is soon obvious that Oliver is a cheating ass concerned only with himself and Jimmy kicks him to the curb. The real story is about Jimmy and Eric who grew up together and have been best friends since childhood.

There is a definite strained feeling between Jimmy and Eric and after a heart to heart they set about repairing their friendship that has been neglected over the years. Most of the blame for this lies with Jimmy who has been in love with his straight best friend for years and has done anything he can to forget about it and get on with his life.

There is very little romance for most of the book but more of a trip down memory lane as Jimmy settles back to a way of life he hadn’t realised he had missed so much. He also spends time catching up with old friends and remembering his childhood antics with Eric. There is something subtle and not easily defined between Jimmy and Eric but it’s something that neither of them are willing to face in fear of ruining their friendship. Only when Eric is faced with the most stressful time of his life does he let loose and confess his feelings openly and then it’s like the floodgates open and there is no stopping him.

This is a sweet and poignant story of a deep love between two friends that becomes something more and surprisingly has very little angst.

This is a touching and poignant look at growing up and coming home. Of friendships and true love.

Newly qualified doctor Jimmy returns to work in his hometown, bringing his delicate Chicago boyfriend with him. Things get a little complicated when he realises Oliver will never fit in - and when he realises he just can’t hide his attraction to his straight best friend any longer.

This is a feel-good celebration of everything country. From tailgate parties to waterhole swimming to beers on the porch - Jimmy comes back to his hometown from Chicago and enjoys everything the country has to offer. This is a story about solid families, nosy neighbours and strong friendships. At times this feels like one long bro-country trucks and beer music video.

Jimmy and Eric have wonderful chemistry. Even the gay-for-you plot seems to work well here. Inseparable as boys, their relationship is hurt when Jimmy leaves town for college. When Jimmy returns, putting the friendship back together isn’t easy for either man. The gulf between the one who stayed to work his family ranch and the one who left to get a fancy degree made the men feel incredibly real. I loved them both.

My only niggle with the book was the Oliver subplot. There was too much judging of the man for being slight and camp. At times, the message seemed to be that gay was fine - as long as a guy could pass for straight and be one of the guys. I know the author is trying for realistic small town views, but I found it a little disturbing. When Oliver does finally destroy Jimmy’s trust, the fallout from the broken relationship just doesn’t ring true.

If you love country music and if you’ve ever fancied yourself a cowboy, this book serves up an idyllic helping of country life and some wonderful country men.

Jimmy and Eric have been friends for along time but Jimmy went away to school to be a doctor and they lost touch for awhile. Well Jimmy comes back home to run things after his father retires so his parents can move. Well he brings his boyfriend with him which causes Eric to be jealous and realize that his feelings might run deeper then he realized.

I can not even say how much I loved the way this author wrote this story and these characters. It was just so sweet when these two men finally admit to their feelings for each other. I really did not like Jimmy's boyfriend he was such a jerk and I was really glad to see him gone. I also really loved that Eric did not hide anything after what happened with Jimmy that was really awesome to see too.

I really do not want to give away any spoilers because you really need to read this book for yourself because it was just so sweet! So I will leave this review with I 100% loved this book and would definitely recommend it!

My Hometown by SJD Peterson

M/M Romance
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads

This is a sweet story about two friends who grow up together, drift apart and find their way back. I loved how Eric was able to still see the Jimmy that used to come over to the farm and hang out, help out with chores, swim in the pond with. Despite the fact that Jimmy was less than a great friend, with true friendship and love, there are those out there that can come back in to your life and it feels like they never left.

I really didn't understand Oliver's role - it seemed that he took up quite a bit of the story and then just kind of dropped off the story. While I can see what Peterson was trying to do, it just didn't work well for me.

Jimmy and Eric had great chemistry, love and friendship brewing throughout this whole story. I loved how they had a history that led to their developing a future.

I would say this book was more about rekindling a long lost friendship which turned to romance, rather than a romance, but it was still a sweet story.

This book was on my recommendation list probably because I read Plan B by the author (really liked that book). I did not finish this book, maybe some day I will, but the two MC's got on my nerves to much. I had a bet with myself that when they finally had sex, Jimmy would bottom (although it read like he always topped with the evil short dicked Oliver) and Eric would make some statement that it doesn't make him less of a man to do so. Or something to that effect. I just got tired of reading about Eric and his real men where flannel and boots, chew tobaccky, drink their beer cold and like their women hot. This gay for you story did nothing for me.

I had a number of misgivings about this book. First, the blurb was deceiving insofar as I expected Oliver to be more "psycho." Second, Oliver was distracting and some of the plot developments left me going, "huh?" ()

On the plus side: hot damn but I love that cover!

Bottom line: Ele said it best in her review.

3 Heart Review by Amber

I absolutely LOVE SJD Peterson as an author. Even this story, which I did NOT love but the writing was spectacular. I think the only reason I finished this book was because this author really knows how to write story. My biggest issue were the characters. I was so disappointed in my lack of connection to them. Not to mention how unbelievably ridiculous Oliver was and how big of a part he played in the story. From the blurb I imagined him being kicked to the curb early on and then Jimmy and Eric beginning their romance, taking their friendship and past to new “romantic” levels. This did happen but FRICK it took FOREVER!!!!!! It was hard to combat my irritation over Oliver and my lack of connection to the characters.

Jimmy and Eric grew up together in a small country town in the middle of nowhere. Friends when they were younger, Jimmy left to go to school in the big city and see what life would be like outside his small town. A few years later he’s back and runs back into Eric but unfortunately he has his current boyfriend Oliver with him. Like I mentioned Oliver is unlikeable and Eric picks up on it almost immediately. Eric also is struggling with his attraction to Jimmy. He knows they were good friends at one point but now he’s experiencing another level of emotion and he’s not quite sure what to do with it.

There’s lots of things that go on here. Oliver is deadest on revenge and it feels he’s constantly present which is annoying.

Again, my issues were the characters. Even Jimmy and Eric weren’t all that likeable. Unfortunately, this one was just ok for me but I really wanted to love it.

HUGE shout out to this cover….HOLY F WORD…the cover deserves at least a 1.5 all by itself….DAMN!!!

I enjoyed this book tremendously. I think what I liked more than anything else was the easy banter between best friends Jimmy and Eric. I like the fact that Eric struggled with what to do. I found it more realistic. Oliver was an interesting character. I understood his purpose but I think he was left hanging a little. There was no real finish with him. It was an easy read with an enjoyable finish. I like the way Peterson writes and look forward to reading more of her books. The cover was what hooked me. One of the sexiest ones I've seen!

Well, this one was okay but definitely not my favorite by this author. I did love what she had to say about making today count and not wishing it away, and the gfy was well done but the story didn't grab me the way I had hoped.

I did the audio version and I can honestly say that was one of the worst narrators I've heard in a long time. Maybe his non-cowboy voice is better, but ugh - really bad. And the production wasn't well done either. I could hear every time they stopped and started and I truly hate that.

So, good - but definitely not great.

One a cowboy, one a doctor, both so freaking fabulous that I can hardly describe them. Sexy. Sweet and their romance. Oh my God, it’s so perfect. They’re best friends and then kissing and...just perfect. The sex scenes are, well, perfect. Okay, I know I’m using that word a lot but I love this book so freaking much! Jimmy comes back to his hometown with this boyfriend Oliver and gets in touch with his best friend Eric with whom he lost touch while being away in the “big city”. I didn’t like the interaction between Jimmy and Oliver, nor the way they finally break up. It felt like have to see 2 teenagers. The story is supposed to be about Jimmy and Eric, but the couple “Jimmy-Oliver” took too much room and not in the best way.
It didn’t do it for me.

3.5 stars. While I liked this book and the guys, I just wasn't feeling it like I usually do with her books. With what the blurb said about Oliver, I kept waiting for something major to happen with him doing something bad to the guys, but it never came. I'm glad they got their HEA though. I think I will stick to her BDSM books, I seem to enjoy those more...

A great love story that takes away the labels and just allows you to fall in love regardless of gender. Jimmy and Eric have been joined at the hip since childhood and grew into being lovers. Sure Eric had an internal struggle but how could he let go of his best friend no matter what his instincts say? A smooth read, low on the angst and high on the animal shit.

I really enjoyed reading Jimmy and Eric's story. I think the best part for me was their history of friends and their banter. It was funny and comfortable. The moms were awesome too. And Charlotte was cool. Now Oliver...yeah, what a jerk! I hope there will be more to Jimmy and Eric's story!
