Bobby Sands was a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army who died on hunger strike while imprisoned at HM Prison Maze. He was the leader of the 1981 hunger strike in which Irish republican prisoners protested against the removal of Special Category Status. During his strike he was elected to the British Parliament as an Anti H-Block candidate. His death was followed by a new surge of Provisional IRA recruitment and activity. International media coverage brought attention to the hunger strikers, and the republican movement in general, attracting both praise and criticism.
This graphic novel brings Bobby Sands’ story to life in a whole new way.
This is an easy read graphic novel for young adults whom would like to get an idea of what was happening in Northern Ireland around the Time of Bobby Sands and the struggles Catholics had been faced with.
It also takes look at how the British and Irish governments try to work out the problems.
My love and interest for al things Irish goes beyond the folklore and the beautiful landscape, but is also rooted in the troubled history of this wonderful island. I have read and seen quite a few things on Bobby Sands and when I bumped into this comic I was quite curious. Interesting read, but the comic means is not the most appropriate one for his story
