I really appreciate how the characters are all starting to realize that you can't fix the past by reliving it or ignoring it.

Can I just say that I love the rpg-interpretations of the characters in the first doublepage chapter intro? She obviously got coloured pages for that ^^.

Her two girlfriends (who are not Akemi and only exist as a sounding board to drive some realisation and plot forward) point out to Sachi that making Eiji her boyfriend for the express purpose of forgetting Yuki is not respectful towards Eiji's feelings - Sachi used to know that.
She should ask herself whether she would like Eiji if she had never met Yuki in the first place.

Sachi thinks about it and realizes that she sees Eiji as the "perfect" boyfriend. She doesn't feel that he needs her. Also, she had simply fallen for Yuki first and she literally can't imagine loving anyone else but Yuki.

Still, she tries to give Yuki's shawl back by handing it to some guy at his school to pass it on to him. Unfortunately the guy hands the shawl to Eiji to pass on to Yuki. Careful questioning makes it clear that the girl in question was Sachi so Eiji goes after her and then lies that it was only a coincidental meeting. Sachi, feeling uncomfortable because of her reason for being near the school, turns fast and slips again - but because it's Eiji with her, she gets caught and set on her feet, albeit a bit exasperatedly on his part. She realises that this will always be the case with Eiji.

Eiji hands Yuki back the shawl and reminds him of his resolve towards Sachi and then warns him to keep away so that she will forget him. Yuki is honestly surprised that Sachi knew it was his shawl in the first place.

Sachi's kindly-meant idea of throwing a getting-better party for Youhei who has been released from hospital gets thrown a curveball, when Akemi decides she won't come, but Youhei invites Yuki to come with Akemi (don't forget the guys are at one high school and the girls at another). So while the party starts and Eiji is subtly (?) pestering Sachi with what she wants to do and get for Christmas - Yuki, who has not told Akemi where they are going, and Akemi also arrive at the party. Youhei is genuinely glad, of course.

But Sachi is now again confronted with her best friend and the boy she can't stop loving. She gets the impression that they like each other, but also that Akemi doesn't quite look Yuki in the eye. When she meets Yuki on the way to the lavatory by chance, he first ignores her and then tells her that the shawl she handed back wasn't his. She correctly infers that he's walling himself off from her.

Sachi comes to the conclusion that a) the way the two are acting has to be real and b) even it weren't real Yuki would be wholly convincing in his role of faithful lover (very helpful, I must say). She also concludes that this means that Yuki will never let himself love her (and I think this is what part of the point is).

Because when Akemi confronts him about not telling her after the party, Yuki points out that if they avoid Sachi and Youhei for ever their own relationship will never go forward because those two are good friends to the two of them - and he had started this relationship again with the goal of intensifying their love for each other.

After the party Sachi and Youhei also meet - at that scarily accurate fortune-teller from the first volume - and talk to each other about the party and about their respective disappointments in love. They both agree that they have done their best and are entitled to being upset, if they want to be (that was lovely, actually).

Sachi and Eiji have a lovely, quiet date before Christmas and Sachi can see how much Eiji likes her.

Yuki and Akemi run into some of the girls that Yuki was kind to in middle school and have to work at having a nice tea in his flat. After all of this upheavals - bearing in mind that Yuki has no one to talk to (because Sachi was the only one he opened up to about this) - he finally makes a desperate appeal to Akemi to forget everything that happened since middle school, so they can start fresh and negate all the mistakes they made.

At the same time Sachi gives Eiji her christmas present and vice versa. Eiji takes her in his arms and tries to kiss her, but Sachi slips to the floor and asks him honestly if he feels it is okay that she becomes his girlfriend while not wholeheartedly loving him. Because she herself doesn't think it is.

Akemi answers Yuki that she doesn't want to forget the time since middle school, because it would mean forgetting Youhei and all she felt for him. And because Youhei is Yuki's friend, she couldn't forget Yuki - so basically she wouldn't be together with Yuki now, except for Youhei (welll, not a very clear argument, but understandable). She confesses that she still does NOT trust him and she wants this to be over.

Sachi realizes that she does NOT want strong arms to catch her when she falls, she wants strength enough to get up on her own two feet, so a boy like Eiji is just not right for her. Eiji finally (!) snaps - reminding her that Yuki will NEVER chose her. Sachi agrees, after all her had told her so himself. Eiji is so upset that he has given her time to decide that he goes the caveman routine and try to force Sachi to tell her that she loves him. Sachi sticks by her truth.

Eiji can't bring himself to force her to a kiss after all and tells her to leave, then going away himself, leaving her sitting in the snow (and thanking him for everything - typical Sachi).

Yuki can only ask himself why - with everything that he does - he can't make himself and Akemi happy. Akemi points out that she has realised that he has lied to herself, and to Yuki and Youhei - but she has only become aware of that since she left Youhei. They didn't address the problem they had with each other in middle school, so while the love remained, the problem remained, as well and they did nothing to change their behaviour - not Yuki and not Akemi.

Because they did not work actively to change themselves to that the problem would not be there (Akemi to learn to trust more, Yuki to learn not to be kind to other girls), Akemi believes that they will never work out as a couple - stuck in the rut as they are. She realizes that neither she nor Yuki smile when they are together: she has changed and learned to smile with Youhei, and Yuki learned to smile since he met Sachi.

Yuki can't accept this so fast - having taken the bit between this teeth and trying his hardest to keep all the promises he made - so he asks Akemi if she ever loved him at all. She strongly confirms that and then leaves.

A heartbroken Eiji confesses to Youhei what happened between him and Sachi and is still annoyed he didn't forcefully make her care for him (hah!). Youhei (being the male version of Sachi, remember?) tells him that he must have been a huge help to Sachi and that he himself will attest that Eiji had given his best to make Sachi fall in love with him.

An Akemi with a cute short haircut meets Sachi for the New Year's Temple visit and tells her that she and Yuki have separated (after Sachi confesses her separation from Eiji). And that she acknowledges how much she has hurt Yuki, Sachi and Youhei with her refusal to honestly search her emotions and state them. She assures Sachi she does love her and the guys, just not the way she thought she did - and Sachi - having gone through her own version of love, brutal honest, self-betrayal and lying to others - can relate and forgive Akemi for this. There may be only one truly meaningful female friendship in this series, but it works for me ^^.

She really is sorry how incredibly harshly she separated herself from Youhei (I'm not surprised, considering he even saved her from a car and broke his arm) when she went back to Yuki, telling him she had never loved him - which of course she had, just in a different way from Yuki... I really like the fact that Shiina acknowledges that you can love more than one person and that feelings can change with time and that love alone is not enough to keep a relationship alive.

Well, just because Akemi and Sachi have made up, does not mean that Yuki has any clue how to deal with this turn of events after all his efforts. He starts going out with various girls again, hangs up on Sachi and only confesses to Youhei when he runs into him that he does not know what Akemi meant.

Sachi talks to her girlfriends and then to Akemi, regarding her decision to confront Yuki, ... but she can't find Yuki and he doesn't answer the phone when she calls. Finally Youhei, who is also worried, asks Eiji to check on Yuki - who is getting to be sort of a hikikomori in his flat, totally depressed.

When he hears that Eiji and Sachi have separated (not that they were ever officially together) his bitterness lets him think the worst of Sachi, too. He decides to meet another new girl he met the day before and clearly tells Eiji that he does NOT want to see Sachi.

A generally annoyed Eiji decides to meet Sachi again and invite her to eat. He explains to her that he always thought everything would turn out okay for him and that's why he never forced himself on her. Sachi tells him to his face that he would never have done that anyway (clever girl knows that Eiji is much too decent for that). He finally tells her why he fell in love with her: because he loved her smile when she was happy and honest in her love for Yuki. He also tells her that she owes Yuki for trying to make it easier to get over her love for him, because he was always aware of how she felt.

Sachi realises that the person who actually did give her self-confidence again was Eiji and tells him so. Eiji finally decides to give her a hint of Yuki's new work place (if he lives in his own flat, he obviously has to work to support himself - his parents don't show up in all of the manga).

Sachi goes after Yuki, determined that he should not give up on himself after all the effort he put into his love for Akemi and his kindness towards herself.

So much heartbreak but it’s a part of life. I like how honest everyone was in this volume. I hope Yuki is just as honest in the next volume….
