The band has some success locally and develops a following, especially the motorcycle club. Blake finally kills himself drunk driving and choking on his own vomit. Bryce decides to come back for Blake’s funeral and wrap up his stuff including a house passed down from an aunt and co-owned by Blake and Bryce. The house has been a gathering and party place for the band and the rest of the group for years. Bryce has silently been paying for it and making sure it stays livable. The house has many memories for all, mostly bad ones for Clara.
When Bryce and Clara meet again at Blake’s funeral, the spark that has always been there between them reignites. Clara is secretly relieved that Blake is gone and she’s anxious to try a relationship with Bryce. Problem is the rest of the group expect her to act like a grieving widow. The other problem is that the group really resents Bryce for leaving and becoming successful.
In an effort to deal with their feelings, the guys end up in a lot of fights. Even with the fighting, Bryce decides he wants to be in the band again and takes Blake’s place at bass. A drug dealer comes looking for Clara to repay Blake’s debt to him, and not with cash. According to the drug dealer, Blake always told him he could have Clara as payment. This situation reveals the full extent of Blake’s bastardly ways to the group.
Meanwhile, Bryce and Clara fall deeply in love and start a secret relationship. Of course, the secret doesn’t last for long. The second and third parts of the book are the rest of the group dealing with Bryce & Clara being a couple and realizing how bad Blake really was. In the end, the band gets signed by a record company and you see the start of what promises to be a successful career. And Bryce & Clara get their HEA.
This story was good, but it was lacking any sparkle. Everything is so serious, nothing to relieve the constant angst. Clara starts as a total martyr, but thankfully she redeems herself and goes after what she wants – Bryce. Bryce is a nice guy, but he has his deceptions also.
Before the book was published, the author lent me an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The book I was loaned contained several typos, missing words and weird sentences. Not as many as some of her other books, but still enough to be aggravating if that kind of thing bothers you.
