Medeltidshistorikern Fredrik Charpentier Ljungqvist bjuder på en lättläst exposé över den politiska, ekonomiska, sociala och kulturella utvecklingen i Norden under tusen år med utgångspunkt i de senaste rönen från arkeologisk och historisk forskning.

Den långa medeltiden är en introduktion till Nordens historia från folkvandringstiden på 500-talet fram till reformationen på 1500-talet. Till skillnad från tidigare översiktsverk behandlas här hela Norden, och inte bara ett enskilt nordiskt land, och den traditionella uppdelningen mellan medeltid och forntid överges.

Även om ett av kapitlen skildrar den politiska utvecklingen är det de sociala förhållandena som står i centrum i denna översikt. Hur bodde man och vad åt man? Vilka möjligheter fanns det att resa och hur utvecklades skeppsbyggnadskonsten? När skedde klimatförändringar och hur påverkade de människor? Vilka redskap användes i jordbruket, för hantverk och för att bygga hus och skepp? I vilken grad levde människor av självförsörjning och hur utvecklad var handeln? Hur såg lag och rätt ut?

I boken behandlas allt från framväxten av nordiska kungariken och städer till jordbrukets och konsthantverkets utveckling och människors hälsa under forna tider. Vi får bekanta oss med livet för såväl kungar som trälar och följa med genom sociala omvälvningar som kristnandet, digerdöden och ståndssamhällets framväxt. Geografiskt rör vi oss från den karga nordnorska kusten i norr till den bördiga danska myllan i söder.

I gulped this book in two sittings which is rare for a non fictions at the moment for me. It thoched on so many things and topics during the medieval times and I keep wanting to learn more and more. Never getting bored by it and had so much fun looking at different pictures and reading about many different things. Highly enjoyable and learned a lot along the way

"The Long Middle Ages" (my translation) is a very ambitious book. In it, FCL attempts to provide an introductory 1000 years medieval history of the Nordic countries, while bridging the gap between academic and pop-science readers. Surprisingly, in less than 300 pages(!) he succeeds.

In the process he challenges a plethora of well-known "truths." One of them being a challenge to what is generally considered the Nordic Middle Ages - and this is the reason for the title. Contrary to Nordic custom, FCL argues that, as is the case of the rest of Europe, the time between (roughly) 500-1500 CE should be considered the Middle Ages in the Nordics as well.

He also manages to touch on just about everything. Politics, religion, economics, demographics, environmental changes, farming reforms, social customs and hierarchies, family life, wars, pestilence, architecture, technologies big and small, etc, nothing is too micro or too macro. In all, the book feels huge, and as a primer I do not think anyone could go wrong with this one. For what it is, it is really very good!

The one and only complaint I have is the inevitable one for a book like this. In the process of telling a very big story, the author has to sacrifice depth. It's amazing how relatively little it feels like he had to leave out, but with the time-span and short format, it is still a lot. The kicker is, I don't know how FCL could have fixed it - going into more depth would change the book into a full-on academic one, sacrificing scope would void the idea of the book - in this one aspect, the book was doomed from the get-go.

Which, again, is part of what makes it so impressive. My mind may be a bit blown here... Bravo FCL!

Very nice, if sometimes overly brief, description of the Scandinavian countries from the Iron age migration period around 500BC to the Protestant reformation during the 16th century.

In a fairly unusual fashion, it attempts to cover not just one country and not just one, distinct time period, but instead sketches an outline of how interlinked the Scandinavian countries were, how they developed over time and how culturally close they were (and are). Even if the similarities are described as many, the most important differences are also highlighted. For instance, the geographic layout of Sweden prevented a strong centralised monarchy from occurring during the Middle ages, since there was simply too much forest and the regions were too separated for that to be practically possible. Instead it functioned as a lose federation. Denmark suffered from in-fighting and plotting among its nobility, which prevented a very centralised monarchy there (but at least it had an acknowledged one, instead of the lose federation that was Sweden), while Norway was extremely centralised early on, due to both its geography and its lack of the strong nobility and competing powers that Denmark experienced.

It also describes in some detail what is known about craftsmen and women, the way people dressed (not at all in drab brown and grey clothing, but with coloured cloth!), what people ate and how and when the Scandinavian countries transitioned from paganism to Christianity, and the peculiarities of that transition.

All in all, I kept wishing it was longer and more thorough. The writing is straight forward and easy to follow, without being bogged down in minutiae, while still clearly drawing information from scientific sources, as evidenced by the dense "recommended reading" list at the end, if nothing else.

Very good swedish book for everyone interested in the middle ages

En mycket trivsam historieläsning. Den gör ett mycket gott arbete med att inte bara förklara den förändring som skedde och den stora närvaro medeltiden spelar hos oss än idag, utan också beskriva allt det som föranledde de händelser som beskrivs. Mycket bra med en uppdatering av all myters sanningsenlighet ur forskningens synvinkel och också höra detaljer såsom hur olika källors trovärdighet bedöms av nutida historiker. Välstrukturerad och välskriven. Inget speciellt som fattades. Såsom författaren påpekar kan detaljer om enskilda händelser och karaktärer alltid studeras genom specialierade fördjupande alster.

Ibland har man tur och dyker på något riktigt bra och dessutom lärorikt. Jag har precis lyssnat klart på en ljudbok av Fredrik Charpentier Ljungqvists bok "Den långa medeltiden: de nordiska ländernas historia från folkvandringstid till reformation. Den är riktigt bra och ger förklaringar till likheter och skillnader mellan länderna. Modern forskning parat med historiska källor ger åtminstone för mig en ny bild. Till exempel trodde inte människorna innan reformationen att jorden var platt.

Väldigt fin översikt av Nordens historia. Författaren beskriver hur samhället utvecklades år 500-1500 och jämför likheter o skillnader mellan olika delar av Norden. En tematisk kapiteluppdelning gör att det är lätt att följa med. Boken är lättläst men samtidigt insiktsfull, vilket är en fantastisk kombo. Boken rekommenderas starkt till alla med ett intresse för nordisk vikinga- o medeltid!

I skolan läste jag franska revolutionen tre gånger, men lyckades helt undvika perioden före Gustav Vasa. Därför var det väldigt intressant att få veta ner om denna tid, även om boken var en aning träig.
