A Memorable Fling that Heals and Supports
This is the first I read a book from authoress Candace Havens. I was hooked when I read a preview excerpt and the book summary. I enjoyed three quarters of the book immensely but the end part was a little unnecessary and far fetched.
Reporter Macy Reynolds needs a break from her exciting and stressful life in Boston after a personal life mishap. She has decided to make a drastic change and move to a small town in Texas called Tranquil Waters. However, Tranquil Waters, is anything but peaceful when the residents shun her and there is a sexy war hero who would like to get know her better.
Lieutenant Blake Michaels has returned home as a celebrated warrior but doesn't feel like one. The event has taken a physical and emotional toll and he has been shut off for a while. Something close to curiosity and desire are awaken when Blake notices a drenched, high heel wearing damsel forcefully shuttling a Great Dane into her car.
The story started out with a bang and peaked my interest, especially with the unusual meeting and interactions between Macy and Blake over a beautiful dog called Harley. The Great Dane's antics alone were entertaining along with her intelligence. The supporting characters, including Blake's family and friends, Macy's one lone friend, residents of Tranquil Waters and Macy's employees and colleagues added depth and humour to the story. It was very sweet and loved all the nuances.
Also, the premise of the tale made sense and the escalation in romance was understandable as it was fueled by vulnerability, fear, respect and mutual interest. Loved how comfortable and honest the main characters were with each other about their feelings, even though they experienced some bumps and a few hardships.
This book was heartfelt, sexy, emotional and funny. However, I wish there was some focus on the important issues of PTSD, fear and acceptance. All of these story lines could have been developed but the obvious issues were ignored to follow a story line of a military man and accountant being supportive of a world renowned reporter with her career choices.
For example, Blake was interviewing older veterans to get over his issues of pain and fear and wrote an article for Macy to review. He completed the task and she reviewed it and then the story line was complete without any further development or details. And there were many more instances like this. That is what I found frustrating and didn't agree with the long distance relationship option.
Other than that, I enjoyed the book and will read more of Candace Havens books in the future. I love the varied and unique background that the authoress holds and it shows in her books.
If you want some sexy times with a Marine along with a smartest and sweet dog and a confident heroine, you will enjoy this book.
