Το "Φωτιές" δεν είναι αυτό ακριβώς που εννοούμε όταν μιλάμε για ένα νεανικό έργο: γράφτηκε το 1935· ήμουν τριάντα δύο χρονών. Το βιβλίο, που δημοσιεύτηκε το 1936, ξαναβγήκε το 1957 χωρίς σημαντικές αλλαγές. Τίποτα επίσης δεν άλλαξε στο κείμενο της παρούσας έκδοσης. Προϊόν μιας κρίσης πάθους, το "Φωτιές" έχει τη μορφή μιας συλλογής ερωτικών ποιημάτων ή, αν το προτιμάτε, λυρικών πεζών, με κοινό άξονα μια ορισμένη αντίληψη για τον έρωτα. Σαν τέτοιο, το έργο δεν απαιτεί σχόλια· ο απόλυτος έρωτας που επιβάλλεται στο θύμα του μαζί, σαν αρρώστια και σαν προορισμός, υπήρξε πάντοτε ένα θέμα πείρας και ένα από τα πιο τετριμμένα λογοτεχνικά θέματα. Το πολύ-πολύ να υπενθυμίζαμε πως κάθε έρωτας βιωμένος, όπως αυτός από τον οποίο βγήκε αυτό το βιβλίο, πλέκεται, ξεπλέκεται κατόπιν, μέσα σε μια δεδομένη κατάσταση, και πως αυτή η πλοκή γίνεται με τη συνεργασία ενός πολυσύνθετου κράματος από συναισθήματα και περιστάσεις που σ' ένα μυθιστόρημα θα σχημάτιζαν την υπόθεση της αφήγησης και σ' ένα ποίημα συνιστούν το σημείο από το οποίο ξεκινά το τραγούδι...

Marguerite Yourcenar, original name Marguerite de Crayencour, was a french novelist, essayist, poet and short-story writer who became the first woman to be elected to the Académie Française (French Academy), an exclusive literary institution with a membership limited to 40.
She became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1947. The name “Yourcenar” is an imperfect anagram of her original name, “Crayencour.”

Yourcenar’s literary works are notable for their rigorously classical style, their erudition, and their psychological subtlety. In her most important books she re-creates past eras and personages, meditating thereby on human destiny, morality, and power. Her masterpiece is Mémoires d'Hadrien, a historical novel constituting the fictionalized memoirs of that 2nd-century Roman emperor. Her works were translated by the American Grace Frick, Yourcenar’s secretary and life companion.
Yourcenar was also a literary critic and translator.

Ljubav prema knjizi često se ogleda u kakvom se fizičkom stanju nalazi knjiga. Ishabane korice, po koje uglasto uvo i različiti rukopisi na marginama svedoče da sam „Vatre” tokom ovih petnaest godina snažno voleo.

„Vatre” su knjiga lirskih zapisa o mahnitoj ljubavi, ljubavi kao demonu, opsesiji.

Knjiga se sastoji iz devet lirskih monologa koje izgovaraju antički junaci (Fedra, Ahilej, Patroklo, Antigona, Lena, Marija Magdalena, Fedon, Klitemnestra, Sapfo). Monolozi su ekspresivni, barokni, na granici nadrealnog i višestruko slojeviti. Jezik mahnito zaljubljenih je uvek nalik govoru duševno poremećenih (agresivno šaputanje na jastuku).

Mitovi u „Vatrama” nisu plošna stvar, već nalikuju na štrudlu bogatu nadevima. Iz ovih mitoloških palimpsesta se mogu iščitati:
A) Sloj antičkog mita kakvim ga znamo iz antičkih izvora.
B) Slojevi mita kakvi su oblikovani kroz vreme. Ne možemo da maštamo o Fedri bez sloja koji dolazi iz Rasinove tragedije, niti o Mariji Magdeleni bez naknadne izmišljotine da je bila prostitutka i njene figure na baroknim platnima.
C) Slojevi savremenosti. Tenkovi i mitraljezi pucaju u tebanskom ratu, a podzemni Stiks biva zamenjen pariskim metroom. Faon je diler morfijuma u Konstantinopolju.
D) Slojevi pozorišta, kabarea, cirkusa, filmskih traka. Sapfo je akrobata na trapezu („namagnetisano stvorenje, odveć krilato za tlo, odveć telesno za nebo”), a borba između Ahileja i Pentesileje (amazonke su ovde slovenskog porekla) nalikuje na balet koji bi producirao Sergej Djagiljev.
E) Biografski sloj vezan za Margeritinu ljubav prema njenom lektoru i izdavaču Andreu Frenjou. Frenjo ju je odbio jer je više voleo da juri parisku momčadiju, a Margerit se predavala alkoholu, telima drugih muškaraca i žena i pisanju. Rezultat: „Vatre”, „Snovi i sudbine” i „Završni udarac”.
F) Sloj „našeg” života koji možemo da učitamo u „tuđe” narative.

Između poglavlja, kao mizanscen, nalaze se grupisani izvodi iz dnevnika, aforistično intonirani sa lirskim uzletima. Od ulaska: „Nadam se da ova knjiga nikada neće biti čitana”, do izlaska: „Neka niko ne bude optužen za moj život”.

Prikladno za ljude koji vole neumerenost u svemu, a posebno vole neumerenost u jeziku.

Marguerite Yourcenar reuniu neste livro um apanhado dos seus desabafos deixados à toa em folhas soltas, num período em que passava por um desgosto amoroso. Todos juntos não são mais que algumas páginas.

O resto são relatos de amores históricos, sobretudo da mitologia grega. Aconselho uma pesquisa prévia sobre estas personagens; o tema é vasto e complexo. Eu, pelo menos, rapidamente esqueço os parentesco confusos, os nomes estranhos e às vezes tão semelhantes que me baralham.
De qualquer maneira, as histórias mitológicas são sempre fascinantes e a autora recriou-as com muita sensibilidade e um toque muito feminino.
Mas a minha favorita foi sobre a mítica Maria Madalena; a história bíblica tantas vezes ouvida e recontada, ganha uma visão intimista e completamente nova da eterna pecadora.

Uma delícia de escrita, de sensibilidade, de espírito criativo.

At first I did not know how to take this book, which consists of nine prose poems from the point of view of mythological or historical figures, interspersed with aphorisms. As I read on, I realized that what held them together was the author's passion, imagining herself as Phaedra, Achilles and Patroclus, St Mary Magdalene, Clytemnestra, and Sappho. As a bisexual, Marguerite Yourcenar was able to see sex from the point of view of both sides.

Perhaps my favorite was her Mary Magdalene, who had, in her fantasy, been engaged to St John the Evangelist, losing him to Christ:
We sin because God is not: it's because nothing perfect is set before our eyes that we settle for human beings. As soon as John would understand that God is only a man, all reason not to prefer my breasts to Him would vanish.I got decked out as though for a ball; I got perfumed as though for bed. At my entrance in the banquet hall, all jaws dropped: the Apostles rose in an uproar so that they would not be contaminated by the grazing of my skirt: in the eyes of these upstanding citizens I was impure, as though I was continuously menstruating. Only God did not rise from his leather bench; instinctively I recognized these feet worn down to the bone by having walked on all roads of our Hell, this hair infected by a vermin of stars, those huge eyes pure as the last pieces of the sky he had left. He was ugly as suffering: he was dirty as sin. Choking back my spit, I fell on my knees, incapable of adding sarcasm to the terrible weight of God's anguish.
In between the nine sections, there are a few aphorisms printed in Italic to help set the mood for what has preceded and what will follow.

I have read Yourcenar's most famous work, The Memoirs of Hadrian, twice. This is a more indirect work but strangely satisfying from the intensity of its emotions.

Yekpare bir ulu şiirin karşısındasınız. Şüphe duymayacağınız bir samimiyetle ‘’umarım bu kitap hiç okunmaz’’ diyerek başlayan şair, mitosu öğretme derdinde hiç değil, efsanelerin aslını bilmenizi de talep etmiyor. Onları kullanıyor, dönüştürüyor, çarpıtıyor, kendi söyleyişinin kalıbına döküp, aşk acısının zehirli merhemini karıyor. Metnin zorluğundan dem vurmak, boş yere kendimi yoruyorum demek olabilir. Şiirin anlaşılmak için değil; yalnızca gelgitli bir resim, bir leke olarak görünmek, safça okunmak, birbirine çarpan sözcüklerden size özel kıvılcımlar saçmak için var olduğunu hissediyor musunuz?

Ein grandioses Frühwerk! Getragen von ihrer Sprachmeisterschaft verwandelt Yourcenar einige Sagen der Antike in postmoderne Epen - jedenfalls aus der Sicht dre 30er Jahre unter dem Einfluss von Jazz, Kino und dem ersten Weltkrieg. Geschrieben mit Leidenschaft und Witz endet Iphigenie vor dem Erschießungskommando und Kassandra im Schützengraben, während die attischen Verschwörer im Sportwagen zu den olympischen Spielen fahren.

El segundo libro de relatos que leí de la autora, aquí se acerca, estilísticamente a "Memorias de Adriano". En estos relatos/poemas en prosa, recicla leyendas y personajes de la mitología griega con su particular sensibilidad, en estas historias que tienen como eje común el amor.

"Deshice mis cabellos como para tapar mejor la desnudez de mi culpa; vacié ante él el frasco de mis recuerdos."

Obra de juventud, de entre las grandes guerras (que resuenan como cañonazos o estallidos de granada de Troya a Tebas), este terrible, lírico y apasionado hasta el desenfreno libro mantiene incólume su hechizo y su asombro en mi segunda lectura, tantos años después.

Inclasificable, con un equilibrio entre la antigüedad y la convulsión de una Europa sobre la que ululan las sirenas (y el mundo calla sobre el lecho evocado por los Trágicos), con una escritura que aún no es la solemne y majestuosa de Opus nigrum o Memorias de Adriano (en la que seguirá latiendo tan fuerte la vida sobre los mármoles) y deudora de Valery, Giraudoux, de Cocteau, con un expresionismo de bacante, "tensa y florida", nos ofrece aquí Yourcenar su revisión de los grandes dramas que cimentaron nuestra cultura.

No es una obra perfecta, y no es didáctica o divulgativa: es una exploración a tumba abierta de las honduras del deseo, de la desesperación, del abandono.
Clitemnestra, Fedra, Aquiles, Lena (la de los tiranicidas) y, sobre todo, María Magdalena o la salvación, nos hablan de muy cerca, nos gritan desde el horizonte, se hacen uno y nosotros con esta poderosísima y pujante escritura. "Espero que este libro no sea leído jamás". Agradecimiento ferviente a quien la convenció, y por rescatarlo veinte, treinta años después a ella misma, La Primera Inmortal.

Así como El túnel de Sábato no se puede leer estando preso de los celos, creo que Fuegos de Yourcenar no se puede leer enamorado; cada frase y cada relato amplifican las formas en que pensamos y extrañamos a esa persona... Puede que al lector que busque historias de amor con principio, nudo y desenlace se decepcione de los nueve relatos, pero cada relato es como un estereograma: hay que ver más allá de lo que está escrito, y visualizar la secreta imagen que esconde.

Non cadrò. Ho raggiunto il centro. Ascolto il pulsare di chissà quale orologio divino attraverso l'esile parete carnale della vita piena di sangue, di trasalimenti e respiri.Sono accanto al nocciolo misterioso delle cose come di notte, talvolta, si è accanto a un cuore.


Dopo aver visto una rappresentazione teatrale tratta da Fuochi , che mi ha coinvolto molto ,per un'interpretazione carica di tensione emotiva ,ho recuperato il testo
Davvero intenso e vibrante !

prilično zahtjevno štivo. marguerite yourcenar izgrađuje ljubavne priče i priče o ljubavi kroz klasične (antičke) likove pa je knjiga podijeljena u devet priča u čijem je središtu protagonist koji proživljava svoju ljubav - tu ćeš naći npr. ahileja, sapfu, patrokla i antigonu. bez barem okvirnog poznavanja njihovih mitskih života i života likova s kojima ulaze u interakcije, ovo je jedva razumljivo. s obzirom da je moje poznavanje mitologije pod finim slojem prašine, nisam mogla u potpunosti savladati te tekstove pa sam ju ubrala samo površinski... marguerite yourcenar piše divno, njena proza na granici je s poezijom, bogata je i kompleksna, posjeduje onu zastarjelu finoću starih tekstova. da bih se vratila ovoj knjizi i mogla ju u potpunosti primiti, bilo bi potrebno prije toga ponoviti praktički cijelu antičku mitologiju...

Yazılarda Magdalalı Meryem hariç efsanelerin veya kişilerin hepsi, antik Yunan mitolojisine aittir, dolayısıyla sıkı bir mitoloji bilgisi olmadan okumanın hiçbir şey ifade etmeyeceğini belirtmeliyim. Kitabın sonuna konulan açıklayıcı efsanedeki veya gerçek yaşamda yeralmış kişilere ilişkin bilgiler mutlaka kitaptan önce okunmalı. Yazarın gençlik yıllarında, başı dumanlı yıllarda yazılmış aşk anlatımları. Arada özgün düşüncelerini italik olarak vermiş olsa da bu kitabın yazarını bilmeden okusam M. Yourcenar ‘a ait olacağını düşünmem. Sevemedim.

Fermosísimo como Yourcenar describe a Safo:
"Es acróbata, como en otros tiempos fue poeta, pues la índole especial de sus pulmones le obliga a escoger un oficio que pueda ejercerse entre la tierra y el cielo."


"Criatura imantada, con demasiadas alas para estar en la tierra y demasiado carnal para estar en el cielo."


"(...) parece un atleta que se negara a ser ángel para no restarle mérito a sus saltos prodigiosos."


Tamén Fedón falando de Sócrates así:

"La fijeza de su mirada parecía fortalecer los músculos de mis piernas, los huesos de mis tobillos, como si me hubieran crecido en los talones las alas de su pensamiento."


P.D. Unha parte de min sente que puntuar este libro con 3 estrelas é bastante inexacto e mesmo inxusto. Queda así, pero co apuntamento de que hai varias semanas que me custa moito concentrarme para ler e iso non facilita a conexión en absoluto.

dei poeti: mi sveglio ogni notte
nell’incendio del mio stesso sangue.”

Marguerite Yourcenar scrive Fuochi a poco più di trent’anni come esternazione e omaggio a una vocazione passionale che ha perlustrato l’abisso: perché ogni amore non corrisposto si nutre di vertigine e rischia l’annientamento. Ma Yourcenar è una donna troppo forte per soccombere al suo stesso dolore. Ecco allora che lo trasforma in raffinata sintesi letteraria.
Rivisitazioni di miti, evocazioni di personaggi che hanno nutrito l’immaginario narrativo di sempre (Antigone, Saffo, Clitennestra, Fedone, Maria Maddalena…) vengono rielaborati dalla penna geniale della scrittrice a testimonianza che l’amore assoluto è esperienza universale e pressoché incomunicabile se non, appunto, attraverso il lirismo del mito e l’enigma del frammento poetico.

Lettura non facile ma molto affascinante.

One of the best books I have ever read. Pure genius. Marguerite Yourcenar's writing is splendrous. It fills my heart with joy, astonishment and admiration.

Fires consists of nine "lyrical prose pieces," inspired by Greek myths including Phaedra, Achilles, Sappho and others. The narrator inserts brief comments, aphoristic fragments on love, linking these pieces. In her preface the author comments that the book is "product of a love crisis, Fires is in the form of a collection of love poems, or, rather, is like a sequence of lyrical prose pieces connected by a notion of love. As such, the book does not require any commentary."(p ix). The fragments enhance the stories they surround providing thematic hints--fleeting glimpses at the memories of dreams of love. The feelings expressed throughout are consonant with the classical pieces used as demonstration of the human frailties exposed throughout. "Patroclus", for example, opens with the howling of Cassandra whose fate is to bring forth the destiny of others in her presentation of the future. We all know Patroclus' end, but his destiny is in the hands of the gods who control his fate just as they compel Cassandra's prophecies. Yet, the prose is more a meditation on Achilles' love for Patroclus which transcends his death and continues to cause Achilles to ponder the meaning of life after death. This leads me to conclude that Yourcenar here presents a work for the reader's meditative moments. Even in translation the poetry escapes through the prose, as with all of Yourcenar's works, and leaves us with messages over which we may linger with contemplation and consideration of the nature of our reading life.

Stvarno sam se radovala ovoj knjizi jer mi je Marguerite Yourcenar jedna od omiljenih spisateljica koja je napisala neke od najboljih knjiga koje sam uopće pročitala (Hadrijanovi memoari, Anna, soror). Ali ovo je bilo tako pretenciozno pisanje gdje sam se borila da uopće dođem do kraja. I da, znam da, prema riječima sama spisateljice, ovdje ima slojeva klasične grčke literature i mitologije (ja sam osoba koju je Schwab pretvorio u pasioniranu čitateljicu knjiga, a donekle znam i klasične Grke), osobne biseksualne prirode, stvarnog svijeta ranog dvadeset prvog stoljeća i tako dalje, i tako dalje ali to mi i dalje ne pomaže da u meni zapali vatru interesa i ljubavi za ovu knjigu. Znam da s obzirom na format ova knjiga se može učiniti kao dobar starter za Marguerite Yourcenar ali ako hoćete nešto kratko a puno, puno bolje uzmite Anna, soror.

Mitoloji kavramlarına aşina değilseniz hele ki hâkim değilseniz sizi sıkacak bir okuma olur Ateşler velev ki ben ikinci defa okuduğum için yine aynı tadı aldım tabi ki Yourcenar okumak bambaşka bir his tarifi olmayan.

Compré el libro como por una corazonada en una librería de viejo sin saber lo que contenía y ha resultado una verdadera sorpresa. 'Fuegos' es como la tragedia griega: cada capítulo te arrastra a una purificación personal profunda. Las pequeñas prosas poéticas que se intercalan con los relatos mitológicos me resumen. Es una maravilla.

Amazing book. Yourcenar's writing is splendid, I sometimes have the feeling that I've written some of it. Of course, just like a pale shade, not like the finished sentence. My favorites were Phaedo and Achilles.

Une lecture en dent de scie, malheureusement.
J’ai été complètement insensible à toutes les nouvelles mythologiques mais follement passionné par les interludes de l’auteure et de ses réflexions sur le sentiment amoureux.

"Per quelli che si amano, il tempo non esiste più, perché gli amanti si sono strappati il cuore per darlo all’altro; per questo sono insensibili alle migliaia di uomini e di donne che non rientrano nel loro amore; per questo piangono e si disperano con assoluta sicurezza. Ed è al rallentatore di quei cruenti orologi che quelli che sono amati vedono avvicinarsi la vecchiaia e la morte. Per chi soffre, il tempo non esiste; si annulla a forza di precipitarsi, perché ogni ora di supplizio è una tempesta di secoli."

In "Fuochi" Yourcenar rielabora le vicende di vari personaggi dell'antichità (quasi esclusivamente donne), vicende che servono da spunto per mettere in campo una vera e propria esplorazione dell'amore, in tutta la sua potenza e in molti casi, crudeltà.
Queste rielaborazioni sono poi intervallate da brevi aforismi che racchiudono la personale esperienza dell'autrice.
La prosa è veramente sublime, piena di pathos e di emozione.
Bellissimo.
