James Robert "Jim" Davis is an American cartoonist who created the popular comic strip Garfield. Other comics that he has worked on are Tumbleweeds, Gnorm Gnat, Slapstick, and a strip about Mr. Potato Head.

Jim Davis was born in Fairmount, Indiana, near Marion, where he grew up on a small farm with his father James William Davis, mother Anna Catherine (Carter) Davis, brother Dave, and 25 cats. Davis' childhood on a farm parallels the life of his cartoon character Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle, who was also raised on a farm with his parents and a brother, Doc Boy. Jon, too, is a cartoonist, and also celebrates his birthday on July 28. Davis attended Ball State University. While attending Ball State, he became a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He earned the dubious honor of earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university, an honor incidentally shared with Late Show host David Letterman.

Davis as of 2007 resides in Muncie, Indiana, where he and his staff produce Garfield under his company, Paws, Inc., begun in 1981. He was married to Carolyn, a singer and elementary teacher whom he met while both were attending college, and has a son named James with her. However, the couple divorced, and Davis since 2000 has been married to Jill, Paws' senior vice president of licensing, who has worked there approximately 25 years.

Ironically, Davis did not own cats when he started Garfield because of Carolyn's allergies, but they owned a Labrador retriever named Molly. With Jill, the family has expanded to include children Ashley and Chris; three grandchildren, Chloe, Carly and Cody; cats, Spunky and Nermal; and a dog, Pooky.

By now, you all know how I feel about the famous cartoon fat cat. If you're one of those Maddox types who can't stand Garfield, I don't even know why you're reading this review, though you are entitled to your own opinion. For fans like me, though, this is a treat.

This book has my favorite Garfield comic strip of all time, the one where Garfield dips Jon's bunny slipper in Odie's water dish, puts it in one of the laundry machines, and when Jon opens it, a humongous bunny slipper comes out. 😂😂😂 I remember this from my childhood and not being able to stop laughing.

A traditional Garfield book with traditional art. No color toons (even for Sunday drawn ones) were a negative. Jokes based on weight, Jon's inability to attract women, Garfield's battes with dogs & spiders, and other motifs not out of the ordinary. Overall, it is good.

Garfield: Life in the Fat Lane was not the funniest book of Garfield comic strips I have read. I don't think I even cracked a smile and only found a few that I considered entertaining. I find it interesting how Jim Davis is funny in waves. Some books are filled with extremely funny situations while other are dull in comparison. It must be hard coming up with 365 Garfield comic strips a year. I know I couldn't do it. Maybe there will be funnier comic strips in the next book. Let's hope so.

If you love cats, you will really enjoy reading the Garfield books. Me? I'm a dog person, but I still enjoy the trouble that Garfield causes in Jon's life. As for Jon, he is kind of pitiful. He can't talk to the ladies and spends most of his time with his cat. It sure would be great if he finally got himself a girlfriend. This comic strip really needs something new, and that would be it. I am still waiting for Odie to talk . . . and waiting . . . and waiting. Come on Odie! Speak up for yourself!

Overall, Garfield: Life in the Fat Lane is a collection of comic strips that left me wanting more. More humor, more fun, more of everything. The good news is that there are still a lot of Garfield books out there that I haven't read yet. I'm sure that the fun I am seeking will be in one of those. i can only hope so.

It's fast. It's funny. It's sarcasm and food. Yes, Garfield remains a favorite of mine for the dry wit, the terribly strange family dynamics, the hopelessness of Jon's dating life, and the fact that it always makes me laugh out loud.

It's been a rough couple of days. I needed some Garfield. This one did wonders, especially the storyline about Garfield, Odie, and John getting their faces stuck making goofy expressions.

I think the coworker who thought I was listening to her thought I thought she was funny.

Garfield

I really liked this book, but it would not let me read without doing this so I have to do this really boring survey.

I laughed so many times while reading this, I annoyed everyone around me. I liked when they got their faces stucks and the one where Garfield shreds the mail. So funny
