Move along folks, nothing to see here! Just a woman who got tired of her married boyfriend and so she drugged him and tied him to a bed in his birthday suit an torments him a little. Some way to deal with a failed relationship. Blood isn’t flowing but just about any other bodily fluids is. She regains her freedom by restricting his. So what. He’ll survive … possibly.

This is the first work in prose by Ulla Hahn who previously only published collections of poems. After I read the overall fantastic Hilla Palm tetralogy I became curious about this author. I found A Man in the House to be totally different from Hilla Palm. A part of the setting (a little town on the banks of the Rhine river) is the same, but that’s about it. The woman, Maria, who decides to take revenge on her boyfriend has nothing in common with Hilla Palm. Or has she? One biographical detail of Hilla Palm (in the second book of the series) might cause a woman to act this way and I wonder if that’s the reason for Ulla Hahn writing her novel in the first place. But I guess it's better to leave that out to psychologists.

The book was a mixed bag for me. There are some wonderful, hilarious scenes outside the bedroom (the “crime scene”). The people Maria meets on the street or in her shop (she’s a goldsmith) are aptly characterized with only a few sentences or utterances.
Inside the bedroom things get a little too yucky for my taste. Don’t worry, no trash or porn or trash-porn or anything like that. Some limits are explored, and, considering the state the man is in (tied to a bed for days on end), it’s inevitable that some not so pleasant but all too human incidents happen. I would have liked to hear more from “the victim”, but unfortunately a plaster over his mouth severely limits his ability to communicate. On the other hand some flashbacks reveal his bad character pretty well. So the reader is bound to root for Maria, although her manners are not exactly lady-like. It’s a strange little book. Interesting and perhaps polarizing. I wouldn’t recommend it as a starting point to Ulla Hahn’s work though.

"Schlaff und gelb lag Hansegon auf dem Teppich. Sie hatte mittlere Dosen dreier verschiedener Schlaftabletten in seinen Kerbelsüppchen gemischt, was ihn zu dem Ausruf "pikant! pikant!" und einem kennerischen Zungenschnalzen veranlasst hatte."

Ulla Hahns Prosadebüt macht es einem nicht leicht. Auf der einen Seite ist es genussvoll böse, grenzüberschreitend und dabei wunderbar geschrieben, mit einem entwaffnenden Blick auf Menschen und Leben im Dorf. Auf der anderen ist es widerlich böse, grenzüberschreitend und dabei abstoßend detailliert, mit einem verstörenden Blick auf Partnerschaft, Rache und Weiblichkeit. Maria ist sicher keine Protagonistin, mit der man sich identifizieren kann und deren Handlungen gerechtfertigt erscheinen - dazu ist ihre Gewalt zu offensichtlich, ihre Machtfantasie zu eklig und ihr Geliebter zu hilflos. Dennoch kommt man nicht umhin, durch ihre Augen zu sehen und Gründe für diese Eskalation zu suchen.

Das Buch kann - und will - nicht jedem zusagen. Großen Lesespaß macht die Novelle dennoch. Um Hansegon doch einmal zu Wort kommen zu lassen: pikant! Pikant.

Technisch ein sehr gutes Buch, das als Erstlingswerk bemerkenswert ist. Als ich bemerkte, was die Geschichte ist - eine Geliebte hat sie Nase voll von Versprechungen und entführt den illoyalen Lover, der einen Prototypen darstellt. Er wird sediert, angebunden und wird gezwungen hinzuhören. Dabei wird in der Dorfgemeinschaft ebenso prototypisch diskutiert. Die kognitive Dissonanz zwischen der Form und dem was erzählt wird hat mich jedes Mal beim Lesen beschäftigt und öffnete Traum für das Verständnis aller Positionen. Trotz der Tatsache, dass eine Straftat beschrieben wird.

Eine Frau trennt sich von ihrem verheirateten Liebhaber, der sie über Jahre hinweg immer wieder damit hingehalten hat, seine Frau bald zu verlassen. Soweit nichts Außergewöhnliches, doch sie nimmt auf eine besondere Art und Weise Rache: Sie fesselt ihn (für ca. zwei Wochen ?) an ihr Bett und genießt es, dass er ihr völlig ausgeliefert ist. Für all die Demütigungen und Verletzungen, die er ihr in dieser Affäre zugefügt hat, rächt sie sich nun auf unterschiedliche Art und Weise. Einerseits kümmert sie sich liebevoll um sein körperliches Wohlergehen, wäscht ihn, kocht für ihn usw. macht ihm somit klar, wie schön sie es gemeinsam hätten haben können. Andererseits zerfetzt sie vor seinen Augen gemeinsame Erinnerungen, befriedigt sich an ihm ohne ihm 'Erlösung' zu verschaffen, sagt ihm all die Dinge die schon ewig an ihr nagen und und und. Mit jeder Rachemaßnahme schafft sie es, sich ein Stück von ihrem Geliebten zu lösen.
Amüsantes Werk, manchen vielleicht zur Nachahmung empfohlen :-) ?

Una amante despechada narcotiza y secuestra al marido infiel y lo retiene contra su voluntad y lo humilla durante ocho días hasta dejarlo en libertad. Me imagino los comentarios de la prensa si los personajes hubiesen sido del sexo opuesto.
