In praise of blasphemy: Why Charlie Hebdo is not "islamophobic"

Rate this book
“Threatened by fanatics, censored by cowards, freethinkers on all continents continue to fight on all fronts to ensure the survival of an enlightened world. And the right to commit blasphemy plays a central role in their struggle.”
Caroline Fourest

In the overwhelming emotional aftermath of the terrorist attack against Charlie Hebdo in Paris, Caroline Fourest reaches those who refused to “be Charlie” in the name of “responsibility”, or concerns about “offending” or being seen as “islamophobic”.
In this ruthless and pedagogical analysis, Caroline Fourest looks into debates on freedom of speech. She also warns us about the risks associated with the globalization of bullying. She puts into perspective the breaking point between French secularism and Anglo-Saxon relativism, between the right to commit blasphemy and the calls for hatred, between Charlie and Dieudonné, and between laughing about terrorism and laughing with terrorists.

Essential Reading for All Who Value Free Expression

This short book makes an impassioned and compelling plea for all who benefit from and value Enlightenment values to come together to stand against those on the political left who have been bamboozled into going along with the Islamophobia slander which paints as bigotry against all Muslims any criticism of the dogma of Islam or any hint that maybe when terrorists say they are committing their atrocities because of Islamic dogma they are being truthful. There is a war going on between modernity and 7th century theocracy. Too many on the left are capitulating to the theocrats and condemning all Muslims to second class citizenship by leaving them prey to totalitarian theocratic dictates from the most backward elements within their religion.

A simpleton and his racist agenda. Blasphemy should be embraced only if it is about the White man's targets. Now, heresy against his White gods: democracy of the political elite, equality by decree, veneration of the Big Brother, these should make one rot in an overcrowded jail. In short anything that has to do with personal freedom makes this ugly troll rabid. A woman deciding to wear a mask by herself? That is certain proof of the patriarchy. The patriarchy imposing masks everywhere, worse than in Iran, and denying the access to food by having mandatory masks in supermarkets, and the ugly troll will start publishing tutorials on making masks.

A good pamphlet, even though the author holds a view of free speech that is more restrictive than the US' 1st amendment. This is regrettable, since her support for "some" limitations is on the same spectrum as any other call for censorship.
Regardless, a good analysis of Charlie Hebdo's role, and the context behind the Mohammed cartoons.

A lire absolument
